This is a hard one to rate, but I only ever bother to write reviews for unsatisfactory experiences, so take from that what you will! The service was fantastic, and some of the dishes were good (loved the Brussel sprouts!) but the wagyu steak special that I ordered medium rare was literally black and blue.. completely cold in the center. When I mentioned it to the waitress, she even said that the steaks tended to come out under-done so keep that in mind when ordering. As my boyfriend said when I showed him the picture: "All they did to that cow was punch it in face and then serve it to you!" The fingerling potatoes were also not quite cooked through (but the "loaded" toppings were tasty!) The halibut special was slightly over-cooked, but that's typical for ordering fish in Montana and was otherwise flavorful. The lion's mane mushroom cakes that came with the Halibut were hands down the best thing we were served- 4/5. Also, you order steaks/chops and sides separately and our sides came out 5-10 min after we got the steak and fish so the kitchen should work on its timing. Maybe if they let the steak cook until the sides were ready, it would have actually been done! Decent (but nothing special) wine selection for the area and some super fun cocktails! To sum up, everything was EXTREMELY over-priced for the quality, but it the atmosphere and service was good so still very hard for me to rate. I don't know how else to describe it... a vibe. The wine selection is absolutely lovely, but I'm biased because I'm a sucker for a jammy California Red Blend. They've got all the favs: paid Robles, Alexander Valley... deliziosa. Hubs had a beer and said it was great -- a Pilsner from Bozeman. If you don't start with the tuna app, you're blowing it. Seems like hamachi & foie gras won't mix, but oh em gee. They go together like vanilla ice cream and apple pie. Get it. Hubs got the NY strip with all the sauces on the side. Chimichurri was his favorite. I decided to be adventurous and went in on the Lion's Mane steak... again... umami-central -- if you're feeling adventurous and want something on the lighter side, get it. My 4 stars is because there was no answer when I called 2x. A message indicated making reservations online. My husband & I travel with our small dog and we cannot leave him in the hot car or in a hotel room, so we get takeout when outdoor seating isn't available. I decided to drive to the restaurant and inquire directly. A lovely waitress asked if I had a reservation, I asked if I could order "to go" because I had a dog. She said "Of course!" Made my day! We've been to this restaurant a couple of times and it has never failed to impress. Yes, it's pricey in a damn-the-landlord, go-for-it kind of way, but it's worth it. The servers are always pleasant (they even have a sommelier) and we wanted for nothing. Every time one of the servers went by, they either cleared our empty dishes or refilled our wine/water glasses. The meal was excellent: it started with complimentary popovers, then perfectly cooked prime rib and "lollipop" lamb, excellent sides, and finally dessert. The only issue we had was they didn't have any bottles of merlot; somehow we managed to power through with a bottle of shiraz. Highly recommended if you want a very nice (albeit expensive) meal. We dined here on a recent visit to the area. The food was very delicious. We had the short ribs and Filet Mignon. Both of the meats were very good though the Filet might have been a little undercooked. We shared a beet salad which is enough for two. We also really liked the Brussel Sprouts. The service from Mason and Darrel was outstanding. They were very attentive and made good suggestions. It is a little pricey as others have mentioned but worth the money. Second time going and will be our last. Food is so/so. Staff is super friendly and all that, restaurant itself has a weird floor plan, but the second time we were there, we were there about an hour before their live entertainment was to start. That entire hour? She's doing sound checks into an open mic. Squeaking, cooing, ahh'ing the entire time and adjusting sound as she goes. Was incredibly annoying as my husband and I were having dinner. The place is already noisy with typical restaurant/bar sound but the added testing of a live mic over it all added to it. My husband had the aged wagyu and um... it was interesting. It came out on a small, oval shaped plate and was the saddest presentation hallmark of our cheap (now vacant) Applebees down the road on Idaho street. They cut the dry wagyu and just kinda... placed it on a desolate plate. It looked dry, sad and lost. He shared a bite and it seemed off. Taste was just... I dunno, off. Attempted the Merc the first time and arrived to an empty restaurant. We were told they were fully booked. Thought this was odd, but figured they must have many reservations and moved on. Tried again a few months later with a reservation. What appeared to be the owner looked at my 12 year old daughter and he whispered to the hostess. We were walked past several available tables to one in the back of the restaurant by the bathroom door. Nice. We received mediocre food and tolerable service and watched as the restaurant continued filling up with reservation-less patrons. My daughter, who has attended the same cotillion as the children of past presidents of the U.S., demonstrated impeccable manners, as usual. We paid our tab and left a generous tip. As we left, I noticed several adults who were seated in very desirable tables with what appeared to have half masticated cow rolling around in their open mouths, food oozing out of unsightly locations on and under their tables, and liquids sloshing about on and around their companions. Clearly, they wanted the classy patrons up front. Not to worry, I can get a cold steak pretty much anywhere in Kalispell. This place is all show while their food and service is about on par with Dennys. Save yourself the dreary, overpriced ambiance. read more

My mother and I were visiting Kalispell to see if this is somewhere I'd like to live part time. The hotel recommended this restaurant. I really don't want to assume bad motives and stereotype why we may have received bad service. The wedge salad was excellent. They brought my mother the wrong drink but quickly made up for it. Table next to us got their bread immediately, ours came late. They ordered the same Mac and Cheese and received a serving ladle, we did not. Our Mac and Cheese was room temperature so we sent it back. Theirs arrived hot. The table next to us received steak knives, we did not. At a certain point we just wanted to enjoy the meal instead of complaining about everything. The musicician was lovely, the decor of the restaurant was also very nice. And the steaks were perfectly cooked (we both had the 8oz coullotte). and tasty. Hot or cold the Mac and Cheese is a pass. But it's attention to detail that matters and when the table next to you gets the right attention and you do not, it makes you feel unwelcome. read more

I was really excited to try this place and there were some hits and some misses. Cocktails were great, Yellowtail appetizer was great, seafoood chowder was okay. Popovers were delicious, burger was pretty terrible. Extremely thin, soggy "bun" chewy bacon, found a hair in my burger which is always unappetizing. Over all it was way overpriced and mediocre, I see what they are trying to do but the execution is off. I tried a bite of a friend's porterhouse as well and even that was underwhelming. I've had the Prime Rib three times now, great flavor but tough every time... Prime? In addition as a "Traditional" steak house there's no ribeye on the menu, in Montana? In addition if you like a good Martini with your call of Vodka and if you dare ask for blue cheese olives get ready to pay... Receipt said $22 and an up charge for the olives... Really? I've been looking for a good local steakhouse and I think I've found it. They first served the large popovers, then we thought we'd try the refreshing greens which included grapefruit, orange and pistachios. The prime was smoked just right, but was a bit more tough than I prefer. The filet, however, was cooked perfectly. We shared a loaded baked potato that tasted awesome. I'm not sure I've enjoyed a baked potato as much as I did this one (that's kinda weird to say). The atmosphere was relaxing and the wine recommendation was spot on. We've spent the last year+ eating at all of the best restaurants across the Flathead Valley and hands down, Mercantile Steak is the absolute best and our favorite place to return to, again and again. Is it because the food by Chef Jacob is fantastic, innovative and thoughtful every single time? Yes. Is it because the atmosphere is beautiful/upscale but still somehow laid back and inviting? Yes. Are the drinks/wine offerings super unique and something you won't find anywhere else? Yes. Is it because the staff is the nicest/coolest/most knowledgeable about their art and craft? Also yes. Honestly, I can't decide what my favorite thing is about Mercantile Steak, but let's start with the food. The "bread service" honestly should cost money because the popovers are FANTASTIC and huge and come with the best butter. We've never had an appetizer there we didn't like.. the calamari is super crispy and always delicious, but the bone marrow is probably my favorite. My husband and I debate on ordering two because we hate sharing it (but two bone marrows for two people is kind of crazy). I don't even eat salad, but the caesar salad with the added anchovies is amazing. For dinner, just order the pork chop. Even if you don't like pork chops, you will like this one. It is the best pork chop anyone we've dined with has ever had. There's a multi-day process this pork chop goes through to reach the perfect flavor/crisp outer layer.. honestly just ask the chef about what he does to it because I won't give the description justice. One of the coolest things about Mercantile is how thoughtful the menu is.. Locally sourced from across the valley and you can tell there is so much time, energy and love put into every. single. dish. You can tell that the culinary team spends a ton of time thinking about how to make each dish not just insanely delicious, but also unique and innovative. Anyway, the pork chop. Get it. The apricot butter on top is just insane.. I literally just eat it by itself during some points of the meal because it is that good. The steak is also amazing and always cooked perfectly, and the burger was our go-to before the pork chop made it's debut on the menu. And I'm a total dessert person and can't believe how good the desserts are here too! The cheesecake is somehow one of the best cheesecakes I've ever had, even though it looks like your basic NY cheesecake (but again, it's Chef Jacob's creation so it's amazing). The bread pudding is like no bread pudding you've had before. Just.. try them all. Lastly, I have to call out the staff. How is everyone so nice, cool and funny? We always request to be in Melanie's section if we have a choice. She's the best! And Shyamali, their sommelier, is one of the best parts of the Mercantile. We always ask her to just pick the wine for us for the night, based on our meal, and it is one of the most fun parts of the meal. She has insane wine knowledge and the coolest collection. I think last time we had a rare wine from Hungary?! Not only does she pick the perfect wine to compliment your meal, but she knows the entire back story of the wine and gives you all this super interesting context that makes the wine truly a part of the meal. I truly didn't mean to write an entire book about this restaurant, but we just love it. Go here for a date night, special event, taking family out in the valley, or just because you want to eat amazing, unique food. read more

We tried out the Merc based on Yelp reviews. My husband and I love to travel and eat exquisite meals. Sadly, this place didn't live up to the reviews. The complimentary pop overs are delicious, the butter & herb compound leaves an unpleasant aftertaste. The fries in duck fat are delicious (as my husband said, it's hard to mess up fries) the pork chop was undercooked and had to be sent back (rare) even after being re-cooked it was still way to undercooked to safely eat. We tried the parts that were done. It was very tender and flavorful but left an unpleasant after taste! We had to ask for our beverages twice before getting them (tea & sprite). read more

I asked did you guys have Don Julio rep? Yes sir. I knew he was lying. Margarita was awful. So when it came time to get the check he charges me $28 for a margarita. I said why 28? Your top shelf is 15? He said bc you ordered a double which I said no I didn't and you know that. I asked him to show me the bottle of DJ reposado bc I watched bartender use another brand and he couldn't. He said I will take off 4 dollars which made it still 24 and 9 bucks higher than a top shelf. I looked at the bartender he looked down!! Super scammers and terrribke liars. We ordered the tuna and foie gras appetizer, bison ribeye cooked rare, 2 sides, 2 glasses of wine, and the cheesecake. Appetizer was very oily, pungent, and tangy. We could barely finish it. Ribeye was cooked rare but was undercooked, very stringy, chewy, and hard to eat. I understand it's a leaner steak compared to beef but I've had exceptional bison ribeyes before and this was the worst I've had. Wine was vinegary and definitely not stored properly. (I tried 2 different types and they were both bad) The cheesecake...there is no crust on the cheese cake. It is a block of barely sweetened cream cheese with the tiniest amount of blackberry compote. Overall, highly overrated restaurant. I will stick with Whitefish Lake Restaurant from now on. read more

I had high hopes for the new restaurant in town that boasted a creative menu and well cut steaks. My experience left a lot to be desired. Best part of my experience: Staff/Customer Service. Our server was EXCELLENT. 10/10 Food was so so. 3 of us at the table ordered cuts of meat and all were consistently overcooked. One so much so that it was sent back. Tough and prime rib should never be used in the same sentence. The menu had variety and showed thought, but the execution was just a little lacking. Complimentary popovers were delicious but it was disappointing that that was the most flavorful part of the meal. That and my salad. At $80 for a salad, steak (which does not come with a side) and one glass of wine, I won't be back. If the price matched the overall experience I'd be willing to give it another try. read more

First time here, and tried the Bison ribeye as per the bartenders recommendation and WOW it was absolutely delicious. It was my first time to try bison and could not have been more satisfied I wanted to pick up the bone and go to town, but social etiquette prevented me from doing so, lol! Pricey and good but in MONTANA, where there are more cows than people, they don't get their steaks locally?!?!? Needs to change. Everything is al a carte but steaks are cooked as ordered and delish with several options for toppings. They only offer one size of filet, no petits. Service was excellent even when busy and lightly staffed-hard workers. No cider on the menu and rotating a vegetable selection like green beans, corn coblets, lima beans etc would be a plus. The puffer bun things are to die for with butter and adding honey would be a nice touch. Such a great find while traveling! While on vacation in Glacier National Park, we needed to stock up on some basics at WalMart in Kalispell, so we went there after a day in GNP. We are pretty seasoned foodies and wanted a really good meal after several days of being on-the-road. We looked up restaurants in the area to make a reservation on a Friday night and were very fortunate to be able to get one at Mercantile Steak at 8:30pm. We got great street parking right in front of the restaurant, were welcomed by the host/manager and seated at a nice table. The interior is really beautiful with Tiffany chandeliers, dark wood, high ceilings that were gorgeous. They had Live Music which was very nice. It seems like a hip new steakhouse with a cool vibe and nice bar area, booths and tables, rather than an old stodgy feel. Our server, Paige, was very helpful with the menu and specials and attentive throughout our meal, though not obtrusive. We had the most delicious hot popovers (complimentary with a meal) with a seasoned butter that were like heavenly clouds that melted in our mouths. Our meals were so delicious too. I had the salmon special that was a 7-oz fillet with the crispy skin on and in an amazing cream sauce, apples, onions and fennel. It was so good! My hubby had the steak special, a chuck steak with a Bernaise sauce. We ordered two sides to share, the baby carrots and the yummy mashed potatoes. Wow, the portions were huge!!! Needless to say, we had plenty of leftovers that we will enjoy during our stay in West Glacier. Unfortunately we had no room for dessert. If we find ourselves back in Kalispell, we'd definitely come back to Mercantile Steak. Great food, excellent service, wonderful ambiance and great value for the money! One of the most disappointing meals I've ever had. Incorrectly cooked steak, mediocre service, bitter greens in the Caesar salad, dry dry mashed potatoes. We took two bites of the mashed potatoes. I even told the server that they were dry and inedible and she didn't apologize or offer to take them off the bill. We ordered our steak medium and one came out medium rare and the other was medium well. The quality of the meat is very good, which is why it gets 2 stars. I wish I could take this quality meat and bring it over to the Montana Club because that meal was a 10/10 despite lower quality meat. Also, the bathroom here is disgusting. It's shared with a bar and has a brown plastic trash can, plastic toilet seats so worn that the white is gone and the brown below can be seen, and just felt cheap and dirty, which is NOT the restroom experience you should have when you're dining at a restaurant with a $200+ bill for two.
