The only cafe that was open within 10 miles of my residence on July 4th! Aren't they awesome???!!! My favorite by far is Latte with Chocolate and I go for less ice. As they say this place is cool, calm and composed with lot of coffee smell! Coffee makers are fun and stylist and they always are ready to experiment with the drinks beyond menu. Had a cappuccino today made with a new Swiss machine just installed in Merit on Broadway. Coffee was flat with no nuances whatsoever. I don't know if they put in a new machine because if the seriously long wait times people who show up to the store have to endure because internet orders are a priority... I wanted to give this place a 5 star-review. The atmosphere is great, perfect for studying, free wifi, the staff is good. My peeve with this place, however, is that the coffee is terrible. It has been stale. every. single. time. In fact, I've been here about 10 times over the past year and have tried half a dozen different roasts, and every time has been consistently bad. Today, I got the guest roast thinking that it would be a different company's beans that they just got earlier this week or something. However, this coffee is also stale as hell. Love the coffee but would really like the cold drinks to have regular sized ice cubes instead of crushed ice. Crushed ice waters down the drinks faster and makes the drinks watery and not as tasty. The other merit location by Leon springs has ice cubes, but the location is too far from where I live. Great coffee and atmosphere. They serve Lorraine pastries which is a plus. I have had iced tea, brew, lattes, cappuccinos and more. They are very consistent in service and quality, which is key. It is usually very busy and seating is limited. Some students study here pretty regularly. Locals always run into one another here. It is just the type of place to meet and randomly meet. I visit weekly and give it an a plus. By the way, the staff is great and seems to have very little turnover. That means you get to see the same friendly faces every time. It's been a rough move to San Antonio considering I'm new to the area and desperately seeking hideaways where I can write, read, and mingle with others within my age demographic. Up until yesterday, that seemed like the most difficult feat I would face in this city. However. after stumbling across Local Coffee, I already feel a bit more at ease. I had plans to visit the Sonterra location sometime this week, but the Broadway location was much closer and just as wonderful as the Sonterra location is supposed to be. The interior offered ample space to work, read, and write either at one of the many tables or on the porch outside. The lattes are fantastic and well worth their price. The ajoining Bike World sends in many customers it seems and I felt comfortable enough to stay for a few hours just soaking in a bit of local flavor. The other reviewer is totally correct in their assessment that you feel just a bit cooler walking into this shop: the staff and patrons are all young and welcoming. Coming from previous living in Georgetown, Austin, and NYC, I've never really felt such a relief to find a place with people my age hanging around. This shop is easily one of the best spots I've found since moving here and will definitely make a regular out of me. read more

That feeling when you walk inside a place and you automatically feel cool. That's this place. The overall look on the inside is industrial with exposed brick and concrete floors, but still feels like a place you could set up shop, relax and enjoy yourself for as long as you'd like. Personally, I wish I had more time this morning to take it all in. On top of all that, you are greeted by good looking, stylish, smiling faces. The sort of thing that makes you feel cool just being around it. From the assortment of pastries, I tried the almond croissant. It was a perfectly petite serving for something so buttery, flaky and delicious. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I didn't actually have coffee (since I was in a Chai mood, but will definitely be back to try the coffee). For what it's worth to coffee drinkers, my brother is a HUGE coffee snob and he raved about it afterwards. A place like this is something the 09 area seriously needed and I will thoroughly enjoy making this a regular morning stop. read more

I love this place. I mean, I really REALLY love this place. I've always loved coffee. I laugh at people who do those crazy detox diets and give up caffeine and everything else. I'm fine sustaining life on juice ala Jack LeLane, but screw you if you think I'm giving up my coffee. And that's why Local Coffee is so awesome. It's a place that honors coffee. The slow pour coffees are my favorite. They're akin to a great glass of wine. They're aromatic, they have a great mouthfeel and they all have a unique and interesting flavor profile. When coffee is this good, there's no need for cheap and ridiculous creamer. Or sugar. Or any of those other abominations that people put in their coffee. On a side note, I also love Local Coffee (at least at the Broadway location...I don't go to Stone Oak) because it's not disgustingly hipstery or overtly trendy. It's just a nice, relaxed and stylish location. Hipstery and trendy get really irritating, and I've yet to be irritated...which is awesome. The employees here are also really fantastic. This place is pretty sweet! Lots of comfortable chairs to sit and lounge around on and drink your coffee and look cool. They give free refills on coffees. I was a little confused about the macchiatto, but maybe that's because I haven't been drinking it right all along. It was tiny. I guess I'm used to ventes and grandes. Gah! They offer free wifi. The place is really clean, and attractively decorated. Check out the detail that they've put into the ceilings! There's a big sign that says, "Cash required for all transactions" or something to that effect, but they don't mean it. They really do take credit cards. I like the fact that the creamers are real cream, and they have all kinds of additions for you to add to your teas and coffees. It's kind of fun that the place opens up into Bike World, so you can grab your cuppa, and check out some bicycles! The staff was really friendly, and fast. Love it! read more

I don't know if I'm writing this review more to right the (technically not) wrong of the previous reviewer giving 4 instead of 5 stars or because THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. I understand it's all about the coffee. For years the Sonterra/Stone Oak Local Coffee location has proven that with it's simple-cool interior, straight-forward service and unshakable focus on the bean juice. But at the new Broadway location, you can't enjoy the coffee until you've recovered from the retro-funky-sophisticated smack in the face the place itself gives you. Robbie Grubbs and his team have brought to the Alamo Heights area of San Antonio the same hip-class he was known for before he made the jump from construction to coffee. Exposed rafters and concrete beams, iron and recovered wood tables. And beware the man with wolf shoulders who greets your entry. And, yes, the coffee is again the star of the show, every drink another example of perfection. The Broadway location of Local coffee is another masterful stroke, a shop that in every way lives up to its namesake, matching it's vibe with the local community. A solid 5-stars. read more

Of all the study places I've gone to in San Antonio, Local Coffee has to be the one with the most natural sunlight during the day. It's a pretty popular location for folks looking for a study spot or for groups to chatter. And, it's just down the street from Central Market, and across the way from Bird's Bakery. Food/Beverages: Honestly, I only ever drink tea, so I can't speak about the coffee, but my friends enjoy the coffee products. On the tea side, it's standard fare. As for food, they have pastries like home-made pop tarts, which are pretty delicious. They also have specialty coffee beans for sale in case you're looking for some good gift for a coffee-loving friend. Ambiance: Local Coffee's space is very open, and they have lots of seating both inside and outside. There's a small patio area with about 5-6 small tables; there are also outlets in this outside area, so you can work out there if you want. Inside, it's primarily bar-style seating or table seating. There are lots of outlets everywhere, so that's a big plus for those of us with electronics. It's also pretty clean in Local Coffee, which I appreciate. And, unlike most coffee shops, it doesn't get super cold (although I still keep a jacket in the car just in case). Also, there is free wifi. Service: The staff members all look super clean cut and are very nice. They all have great smiles and are pretty artsy. Pricing: Like Halcyon, I feel that you pay for the atmosphere. I can easily spend quite a bit there if I get a drink along with a pastry (hence, a dropped star status). I understand it's a local business, so I go in there with that expectation. Hours: Open until 9 Mon - Sat, until 6 PM on Sun. Feeling thirsty for some H2O? At Local Coffee, you can get some refreshing ice water from a little dispenser near the entrance to the bike shop (to the right of the store). They use mason jars as cups - something I love. Tip: There is parking in the front, right off of Broadway; however, it is difficult to back out onto oncoming traffic. I would suggest parking in the back - take a right just after the store and there's a small lot in the back, plus a whole length of street you can practice those parallel parking skills. read more

I am probably not cool enough to drink coffee here, but I do it anyways! Local Coffee is for serious coffee drinkers. I am more in the chai latte category myself, but I do enjoy a good cup of joe and I had to see what all the hipster fuss was about. I must say, I do appreciate the growing contingency of San Antonio hipsters- they have the tastes of Austin hipsters but aren't nearly as snotty or serious about it. Because let's be honest...I'm not very serious about anything other than my job. I added a little Mexican vanilla to the house brew and enjoyed the industrial mid century modern design of the place. The guy behind the counter had a handle bar mustache- this seems to be a growing trend in the 09 given that the guy at WD Deli had almost an identical one. I'm still working on growing mine! I haven't tried the baked goods yet, but I hear they're awesome. What prevents the fifth star for me is that it's usually INCREDIBLY packed- it's really hard to get a seat. I also think they could benefit from a couple of different drink options (I know, I know- they don't want to, but it might be nice). I also would like to see how they give back to the community- Starbucks is lame but they tend to do philanthropic stuff for the communities they're in. I hope Local does the same. read more

I needed a change from Starbucks, so I ventured out today to try this place (it's a little out of the way for me)... and I'm glad I did. I can confidently state that the iced latte I had here was the best latte of my life, hands down. The espresso was rich and nuanced, and neither overpowered, nor was overpowered by, the milk. It was a perfect balance. The staff was very nice, even when I called and asked a question as silly as, "are you open?" I was a little confused by the fact that the beans they sell are not roasted locally--one brand is roasted in North Carolina, and one in Michigan. But hey, what they're doing seems to be working for them, so who am I to question it? This is hands down my FAVORITE Local Coffee. When I first moved to SA Stephen C. (My personal SA guru) told me about this place. I love Dirty Chai Lattes and he said this is where it is at. Awesome place to just chill at any time of the day! It's like a Starbucks, but totally NOT! It is what it's name implies, your local Broadway coffee shop. The feeling I got when entering was that this was just a cool, chill place to hang out. I panicked for a moment when I saw the cash only sign, but quickly learned this is just part of the decor. TIP to owner: May want to take that down. Many of us don't carry cash & may walk in then walk back out when we see the sign. There are plenty of outlets & free wi-fi, as well as free coffee refills (regular coffee). There is a really nice patio on the corner that sits on Broadway. It has a nice little lattice that provides a little privacy from the busy street. Absolutely a pleasant place on a nice day. Ok. I may embarrass myself here....I am a triple venti caramel macchiato, every time I go & even at home, kind of girl. So, when the barista said that their macchiato was made traditionally & did I really want caramel, I quickly replied, "but of course" (not really, but you get my point). Boy, was a surprised when I got a tiny espresso cup full dark coffee. Hmmmm....I thought I was well traveled, but I guess Italy is still on my "Bucket List". Love this place! Great, quiet, place to get some work or studying done. When I walked in, I immediately felt that this was a super chill coffee place due to how quiet it seemed. Everyone there was sitting either at their laptops, or reading a book, an all too familiar scene for me the college student. Pretty sure the guy working knew I was new to Local Coffee and was extremely helping and accommodating. I ordered a soy caramel machiatto which was great, and I got to sit inside and just people watch and enjoy the atmosphere. There's also bike world directly attached so you can take your coffee and look at some bikes! Will come back to get some studying done, all while enjoying some coffee :) read more

I was already a Local fan, but their Stone Oak location wasn't an option for me for my daily fix. The previous reviewer noted the incongruity between Local and the bike shop next door. But actually, when I was doing some work for Bike World last year, the Bike World owners hatched a plan to give up a huge part of their floor plan to Local, so where you're sipping espresso now used to be where bike mechanics were working. My impression is that everyone was enthusiastic about moving toward a community space where you can ride, get your bike tuned, have some quality brew, and meet people. Local's look is a type of unfinished sophisticated. Natural woods, old-fashioned lightbulbs on cords, and some beautiful equipment front and center behind the counter. They even uncovered some interesting building features when they remodeled, and I'm happy to see that they've incorporated them in the design of the shop. The menu offers different options for your milk-to-espresso ratio, so you aren't stuck with the inconsistent latteccino you'll get at other places. There is also a seasonal coffee and espresso menu, describing the beans and how they are sourced, so afficionados can be kept on their toes. I agree with the other reviewer that the espresso has a very earthy and roasty quality. The house-made chai is wonderful, too, if you're into that kind of thing. I want to give a shout out to Local for opening earlyish, at 6:30. This means that Local is not only a mile from my house, but it's also open in time for me to hit some java before work. While I'd rather sit and savor, I'm glad I can get my commuter fix here too. Beautiful design on the to-go cups, although the nice patterning in the foam is lost under the lid! read more

At the risk of hyperbole, let me say that this is the best espresso I have had in San Antonio since... well, since as long as I can remember. (Definitely the best pull of espresso I've had since New York passed their marriage equality bill.) It's vibrant and roasty and well-definited with a earthy roundedness and if I had a better memory I'd also put down the source of their beans for ya'll. But they carry Cuvee, Verve, and Handsome at the present so they know their stuff. They had their soft opening mid-May and I, always on the lookout for some good coffee, sought them out as soon as I could. Since I've never been to the original location (too far! See every single rant I've ever made about development outside the 410 loop for more on this) I don't have a point of reference with this second shop. But taken on its own merits it has everything I want from a cafe: it's well-lit, airy, even, with a decidedly retro feel (Edison light bulbs, exposed brick and wood paneling) yet hints at the sleek and modern with its metal tabletops and angular dimensions. (The bike shop next door seems oddly out of place only because the design doesn't carry over.) I appreciated the classy, friendly baristas who welcomed me with a smile and offer a pour of a new brew they're trying out. Best of all, their prices are in-line with what you'd pay anywhere else. So skip the mediocre brews and see how good coffee can get! read more

The first time I came here, I wasn't super impressed with my Americano. It was a little too acidic and just meh. But subsequent visits have been really great. My most recent Americano was just perfect. The pastries are a little too sweet and too big but they are almost always very interesting. I recently got a strawberry pop tart with crushed macarons on top. How crazy does that sound? Atmosphere wise - it's very much a hipster hangout. But so are a lot of interesting and neat places. There are a lot of chairs - many of which are very uncomfortable, steel contraptions. I never stick around to do any work here but I know a lot of people who do like it. Parking is kind of crazy because some of the spots back out onto Broadway but I've been lucky to go at not so busy times. What I love most about Local is the customer service. They care about brewing a good cup of coffee made from really good beans. They also helped us out by donating a ton of coffee for a fundraiser at our school. This is my favorite place to study and do homework. I've only been in San Antonio for a month and a half, but I've been studying for a million years (at least it seems like it), and this has all the requirements of a good studying coffeeshop: delicious coffee nice, friendly, happy baristas ample seating ample outlets reliable wifi a nice patio an assortment of small snacks WATER IN MASON JARS. Didn't you know the coolest thing you can drink out of is a mason jar. They also play AMAZING music. Most of the time I have my headphones in, but they play Beirut, Devendra Banhart, and Deerhunter, so sometimes I just listen to what they have. It's fun music without being loud and overwhelming. Oh, and they have a really nice restroom. Its sort of rustic, like something you would see on HGTV. The door is super heavy though, so be careful going in and out. I don't know if that is something people normally review, but I feel its worth noting. The onlyyyy reason I'm not giving that last, 5th star is because they aren't open very late.
