Really disappointing experience. Tried half a dozen mini cupcakes and was bummed to find they were smashed in the clever egg carton packaging. I get it, it's cute but not practical. The egg carton container was also heavily stained so the whole presentation was poor. I was hoping the cupcakes would make up in taste but they were so dry they fell apart immediately. We drove all the way from Austin to eat here, and it was a terrible experience! The girl who took our order forgot one of our sandwiches, so I politely let her know, and she said "well, you need to come pay for it, because we don't just give sandwiches away for free!" in a very rude and condescending way, like she was accusing me of trying to get free food when I had already paid for our sandwiches and cupcakes, and the bill was well over $100! They also made my son's two sandwiches with white bread when we specifically asked for wheat, and I made them aware of it, and they never offered to remake them, so my son just ate them, but didn't like them. Also none of our sandwiches came with chips. I asked to speak to the person in charge, and they said she could not speak to me, because she was too busy taking phone orders. Really?! That's how you treat your customers? Too busy to have a conversation with your paying customers? The only thing they did to try and reconcile the situation was give us some mini cupcakes that were dry and tasted a day old, because they probably were! This is a cool place in historic Alamo Heights. I have been in here once before and have had a wonderful sandwich with homemade bread that was to die for. So I was actually kind of dreading coming here because I am eating keto right now and not eating bread. Came here around 2 PM thinking I get a chicken salad sandwich as I remember those being very delicious. I decided to try a breakfast sandwich since that was still an option. It had sausage and egg made to order tomato and avocado. It was absolutely delicious. Everything here is really good. I also had a hibiscus with lemonade tea and that was good as well. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable and the food came out promptly. There was plenty of seating so we found a nice spot and are enjoying our meal. Driving down the street to get some coffee this morning and saw this place. Stopped by to get some breakfast!! Omg I'm so glad we did because it was delicious!!!! My favorite thing about this bakery is that they have mint hibiscus iced tea. Very few places carry a non-caffeinated iced tea, and this hits the spot. I first noticed Bird Bakery from across the street last weekend, and had to try it at my first opportunity. The menu looked delightful and prices seemed reasonable assuming the quality would be high enough. Well, it is. I really enjoyed the "Bb" Tarragon Chicken Salad sandwich (which I am told can also be served salad style, and that the "Bb" indicates a house specialty), cappuccino, and coffee cookie. The orders are cheerfully taken at the bakery counter, and is brought to you when ready. It was all delivered quickly, considering the level of food quality, by friendly people with genuine smiles. The server also checked back with me later on to ask how everything was - an unexpected thing for this food service model. It is a bright and pleasant while busy and fairly noisy place - noise which I would normally find somewhat irritating - but somehow felt altogether cheerful instead. The food was served on ceramic plates and was delicious. The cappuccino was sadly served in a paper cup. I found out later that all I had to do was ask to have it in a ceramic cup. So happy days next time! The capp was a very good capp needing only one packet of sweetener (the best need none). I highly recommend Bird Bakery. This is one of my favorite restaurants to visit because I love their food, so I'm being generous by rating it four stars because customer service has really gone downhill. I had two separate interactions recently with two servers behind the counter, first to order food, second to order dessert. Both experiences were equally unpleasant because the servers acted like they didn't want to be there and like I was waisting their time by placing my orders. Neither of the servers could crack a smile to save their life. Second issue: Pre-pandemic, there were physical paper menus with food options and prices. During the pandemic they switched to a QR code to scan with your phone to see the electronic menu with prices. Currently, all they offer are food options on the wall with no prices, so you have to ask how much items cost, the server guesses an amount "it's like this much" and then you are charged a higher price at the register. This is not ok! Why can't you just advertise the price of your food?? In summary...The food is great, it is pricey like others have noted and I'll wait to return when customer service improves. read more
