I have been here for oil changes and several services , most of the time they are good. But the most recent i had my power steering pump replaced, but after driving home it didn't seem right so i bought it back and then it still wasn't fixed, then they had to replace it with not one but 2 other different pumps. All i have sayb is most shops would have found a way to tell you that the other place messed up fixing your car not us, but this place they tackled it till the problem was fixed and on top of that they offered to pick me up after my truck was done. I would recommend this place to everyone and anyone, you just don't find honesty, integrity like now a days anymore. Good job! Keep up the good work! read more

I have a 2013 Prius with nearly 80k miles that's never seen a brake job. So it didn't surprise me when, a few weeks ago, my rear driver's side wheel began squealing while the tires were moving. The pads were wearing down. Upon examination, I noticed the rotor on that same wheel had rusted pretty badly. The rest of the rotors looked fine however. I'm no expert though, and I certainly have no clue how to handle a brake job, so I decided to take it into my local Merlins. I'd been there before for work on a previous vehicle and felt I could trust them on my Prius too My trust had apparently been misplaced. When they called me with the quote, it totaled $975. This included pads, rotors, AND calipers on BOTH the rear wheels plus a line bleed. When I asked why so high, the gentleman stated it was because I have a hybrid vehicle and that the calipers in the back costed more because of the regenerative braking system. In short, the calipers on a Prius were so different and unique, I had to shell out $200 for each, or $400 total just for the part. He also said that if I didn't change both rear calipers, the new pads and rotors would burn out within a month and would need replacing all over again. The whole deal felt wrong to me so I told the man thanks but no thanks and picked up my car later that day to get another opinion. I'm so thankful we did. My husband has a friend in the city who's a mechanic. We originally didn't choose him for the job since he's over an hour away. After talking with him however, he also agreed that what Merlin was asking was way too much. We headed into Chicago. It took him about two hours to diagnose and take care of my car. Here is what we discovered about Merlin's original quote: 1. For starters, there is NOTHING on the Prius calipers (or anywhere in the braking system) that tie in with the regenerative braking. This is achieved by the engine. I confirmed this fact using multiple sources. Either the man was ignorant on hybrids or he was lying. I'm guessing it's the latter... 2. These 'special' rear calipers cost the same as any other vehicle's. I found retail prices ranging from $65 to $100 a piece. Merlin wanted to charge twice this. Ridiculous... 3. The rear passenger wheel was fine. The caliper and rotor were in working order. We had the pads changed (along with the rest of the wheels), but this was expected. So again, Merlin lied. 4. The caliper in question on the rear passenger side WAS frozen but it did not need replacing. The pistons had gotten dirty from the rusted rotor and became stuck. According to the mechanic we used (and again checking other sources as well), this is very common in calipers. Easier to change the caliper vs fixing it? My intuition tells me Merlin must have thought it easier to try to convince an unsuspecting female to spend $200 on a $100 part... parts that didn't need replacing in the first place! In the end, my Prius ended up costing me less than a third of what Merlin asked: all new pads, one new rotor, and one repaired caliper. I will NEVER return to this Merlins. In fact, my experience has me questioning the rest of the locations. I'm sure honest ones exist but I DO NOT RECOMMEND going to this garage for service. If you choose to though, do your research! And get a second opinion if something sounds fishy. They clearly take advantage of their customers' ignorance!!! read more

As a long time customer of 18 years, I've been going to Merlin on 59 since I purchased my first car. With that being said, I couldn't be more disgusted or disappointed by my most recent visit to Merlin. I brought my car in for an oil change and when I picked up my car, I had noticed windshield wiper fluid was leaking everywhere. (Mind you, this is NOT the first time this has happened to me at this shop. The first incident took place about a year and a half ago, again, during an oil change. I brought my car back in immediately and the leaking issue was fixed at no charge.) Today, when I brought my car back in, I was informed by the manager, John, that it would cost $260 just to take the bumper off of my car and to "see what the problem was." $260 and that's just to take the bumper off, not even to fix the issue, that THEY caused! I explained to John that this wasn't the first time that this has happened to me at his shop during an oil change and I was confused why the first time, it was fixed at no charge and now all of a sudden he was demanding $260 just to "look" at it. John tried explaining to me again that he couldn't fix the issue without taking off my front bumper for $260 and to look around. I explained to John that before bringing my car in for an oil change, I wasn't experiencing ANY issues with my fluid leaking, nor did my car alert me that my fluid levels were even low! This all took place AFTER my oil change. He refused to back down from the $260 bumper removal charge. And needless to say, I refused to pay that kind of money for an issue his mechanic caused. I told John that as a dedicated customer of 18 years, I was highly disappointed in how he was handling the situation and that I would not be returning to his shop. SIDE NOTE: I spoke with my sister after leaving Merlin today and she informed me that JUST last week her husband took his car into Merlin on 59 for an oil change and the SAME exact incident happened to him but instead of windshield wiper fluid leaking, his car was leaking oil!! John informed my brother in law that it would cost him $250 for a part (that had no signs of wear and tear before the oil change, so one can only assume the part was comprised by a mechanic during his oil change) and $370 for service. So $620 and he literally just went in for an oil change. This kind of business is inexcusable, unacceptable and extremely concerning. As a manager, John needs to hold himself as well as his staff accountable and he needs to employ reliable and highly skilled mechanics. I am baffled by the lack of integrity John displayed today and he should be ashamed of himself for taking advantage of his customers, when it's his own mechanics that are clearly at fault. Two words: NEVER again!! read more

Told me it was going to be 1300 to fully replace my dust cover/ backing plate for my breaks (it was demolished by an amateur car repairmen). I ended up getting it done down the street (different Merlin) for 200 bucks and they just cut them off. Sure my inner pads might wear slightly faster but they will cool off considerably as well while driving. Pretty much anyone can google it and see that you're overcharging. My car is 135k miles and it's from 2007. I could have used that 1300 you were charging me as a down payment on a new car, since my car isn't even worth that much in repairs . So no I'm not going to pay you 1300 for just the replacement of my backing plates and get overcharged for labor because you said you have to take the whole wheel assembly off. I don't need a brand NEW dust plate. The other Merlin just cut it off and I'm doing fine so far. Be careful. These guys will try to gyp you of all your money if you don't know basic car facts. One of them had the audacity to tell me that I needed a new sway bar when the car wasn't making any noise and only had 100 thousand miles on it. It was turning just fine. Also I was told by someone I know who drove by the Merlin a few times in the morning while my car was supposedly being worked on (I had an 8am appointment) and they said that my car was still parked outside (I even dropped my car off overnight). I called at 4pm (they close at 6) and they hadn't worked on it yet. They said they were "waiting" for a part that had been in my car the whole time (in the trunk). They're slackers and they're liars. read more

Worst experience i have ever experienced. brought my car in for a coolant leak, and they fixed 2 things that wasn't even causing my car to leak. i brought it back again after they "fixed it" for a hefty charge, and they found the real reason that was causing my car to leak fluid. I wanted a refund back on the original payment i made considering that wasn't the reason why my car was leaking. Also, a pair of pillars, 2 cloth towels, were found inside my hood, and my strut bar was left unbolted down. The owner was so rude, and ignored the problem for days, and the manager claimed he couldn't do anything for me. I have never felt so disrespected by a business in my entire life. it's truly a shame my family won't be giving them our business anymore. i would take your car somewhere else, this shop is notoriously con artist and will do anything to get money out of you. read more

Been going here for a few years and have serviced all of our vehicles. Great customer service and very courteous. Knowledgable and trustworthy. Most recently was purchasing a used car and Chris happened to see us in lot while taking care of personal business on his "OFF" hours. He was kind enough to come over and make sure there wasn't any issues as they had recently replaced the transmission in our truck. He then stayed to help us and did a once over on the potential car we were thinking of purchasing. We didn't ask but he took upon himself to check things out and to me that is the true meaning of Customer Service! My mom took her car there for an alternator and battery. I had a newer battery that was just run thru testing at advanced auto. It passes there. They told her the terminals didn't match up but yet yet said the battery was no good . They like to rip off senior citizens . This place sucks !! read more

We were told by another shop we would need brakes within 6 months on a Toyota Corolla. We were overcharged on a different service at that other shop, asked for a quote from Merlin which was much more reasonable. We have since had brakes inspected at Merlin and they said the brakes still had a lot of life in them. Please bring your business here, they are honest, hardworking and a very respectable business. Went there because the Merlin on route 30 told me I needed a new y pipe on my exhaust. I knew that was not true so brought that estimate to this shop. So I went in and did not say anything about other shop. They came in abd said that I needed a new cat for 350. I said I have the receipt for the cat you put on last year. I also asked about my y pipe they said it was fine. So I got my receipt and other estimate oit of my car. After some persistence they would not budge. I said you have fixed broken exhaust pipes before the cat in the past. They persisted that it could not be done. Then I was told I just don't wave to spend money on my jeep because it is old and has high miles and I just want a cheap fix to keep it running. I said I am holding a receipt for $1700. From last Feb. So I will spend money when needed. I left went to a shop on Cass and Scott in Joliet got it fixed for $30. They did not care that the other Merlin said I needed a pipe that was fine and did not care that they put on a new cat last Feb as I had put on 40k and per them that is all I should expect from exhaust. Well not be using these shops ever again and not only writing this review I'm posting it on Facebook abd telling all my family and friends that they are rip off artists. read more

Don't go to this shop. Unfortunately, they don't stand behind their work. We had an oil change done at this Merlin's and the oil plug fell off while driving on the highway. The engine is ruined and Merlin's won't replace the engine. Disgraceful and very disappointing. read more

ZERO service. Came in and was 1st customer this Saturday 7/23. Was out in front of door waiting to open since 7:20 AM. At 8 AM i was the 1st to walk into door. The location did NOT have any online appointments ahead of me. Just wanted a oil change and A/C check. Many people came in afterwards. Noticed after 3 service technicians took work orders I checked to see if my car was being serviced. NOT! I went to manager at desk and asked him WHY the service techs were taking care of other customers when I was the 1st customer in? I asked him did any of these customers have an appointment scheduled before me? He said NO. I said hey... I just got through working the whole night and now now I am waiting for other cars to be serviced before mine? I should be sleeping! He said its busy and I don't know how or why the techs didn't take your first. I LEFT THE FACILITY. BAD, service I got screwed. They will loose me as a customer for life. read more
