We've lived within walking distance from the restaurants on both Johnson and Riverdale Aves for 5 yrs. When we 1st moved here and tried Metate, we thought it was just, Meh. As a result, we either went to Cocina Chente or ordered from Picante Picante. The former changed owners; the former owners opened Tobala. A few months ago, my husband tried Metate and said the burrito had gotten way better. Yesterday, I decided to pick up some apps as we had main course at home. I bought the corn and Tostones; they were amazing! Very, very delicious! I'm willing to try them again, and go for a main course. Since I didn't have a main course or drinks, I don't think the review warrants 5 stars. In terms of service, it was great; I walked up to the bar and my order was taken right away. I was standing only bc I sit a lot for work; therefore, I deferred the offer to sit down. Some reviews mentioned new owners; in our experience, it seems to be in the right direction. read more

My wife and I have been going to Metate for many years. The new owners have ruined the restaurant. I sat for almost 15 minutes waiting to order and ask two different waiters to take my order and both declined. Yet they took the orders for the tables on both sides of me. When I left I decided to call and discuss this with the manager. When I informed him of the situation his response was "ok, we have enough customers anyway". Never go to this restaurant unless you do not want to get served and treated with disrespect. Went for Cinco de Mayo but was disappointed. I have been here before and they have happy hour M-F until 7.Since it was happy hour and before 7 we both had 2 drinks. When we got the bill it had regular price. We were told they took it away for today. What on the special day you usually add special you don't take away. Besides the sign is up in the window! I love this establishment it's a Great local authentic Mexican Restaurant. The decor is bright and lively small location but big in flavors. The make the freshest guacamole tables side. Chips are so fresh with just a hint of salt and the salsa has the smokiness to it. My on the rocks passion fruit Margarita had me lit off of one drink. I ordered the Birria tacos they were so freaking good and my partner had the steak tacos which were delicious she ate all three. Loved my elote that came with my dish it was so sweet. My family and friends have been going to Metate for years. Obviously the cooks are the same. I had the chicken fajitas which was excellent my husband had the pork chop al pastor he was happy with it. We walk in it's very busy I was told 5 min ok it took a lot longer still like I said we've been going for years so no problem I'll wait. Tables start to clear so we're offered a table for two next to the door I go to sit and the bench has food so I ask the waitress to clean the seat the floor was really dirty too so my husband didn't want to sit there and she makes no attempt to clean the bench. Ok we wait for another table it's a table for 4 so she mentioned that to the other waiter I say I don't mind separate the tables. We place our drink and food order and wait....and wait I see three other couples that came in after us get water chips and salsa. Nothing. Ok we ask the other waiter for water and chips and salsa. We get chips and salsa no water. Ok. Everyone is getting there food and service and we're not apparently little miss blondie waitress must have gotten annoyed about being asked to clean the bench if I wanted to sit on a dirty bench I would go to the park. Everyone got there checks no one cleared our table no one asked if we wanted another drink if we wanted dessert nothing they were actually cleaning all the tables while our table still had our empty dishes. So needless to say we won't be back and I didn't leave much of a tip. Oh and the A/C wasn't working. After reading a review that the owner said he had enough customers I won't bother that's how businesses shut down. I was going to say something when I'm in the neighborhood but now I won't even bother. I gave it one star because otherwise I couldn't write a review. Metate: Save your money and save your time! While the staff and atmosphere are lovely, the food is horrendous. I ordered the steak quesadilla, while my partner ordered the chicken chimichanga. My five-year-old nephew could make a better quesadilla than this place. There were no grill marks, and it honestly looked like they just brought out a plain tortilla with steak and folded it. The chicken chimichanga was even more of a disappointment, lacking flavor, with no cheesy sauce overlying the burrito, and no character. Honestly, save your money and get a much better meal at Chipotle. Not only will it taste better, but it will be 1/2 the price! This is not an establishment that you want to go out of your way for. If you live in the neighborhood and are just looking for drinks and chips, feel free to take a look, but otherwise, don't bother. read more

So to start it off there are signs all over the building that says happy hour we walk in and they say no happy hour today we got past it. We then order a pitcher of margarita where we asked specifically how many cups would be in a margarita because that decides if we would get it or not. By the time we poured two we realized only one more cup would be filled. There was 3 of us and only two ordered the Pitcher the other person ordered a pina colada. When the pitcher came the other person ask where her pina colada was and the waiter said "Do you really need it" word for word. We asked about the pitcher the whole staff got confused on it we ordered one or two we ordered one to them he replied "obviously there's gonna be ice" We got our bill and the other person who ordered the pina coloda said virgin on the bill an then on top of it we got kicked out because we were "there for too long" we were there for probably less than hour Don't go price overrated and food not god read more

My company has an office a few doors down. So, when I met one of my favorite colleagues for lunch, she suggested we go here. It was a spring afternoon (so says the calendar, however Mother Nature didn't get the memo), and neither one of us wanted anything too heavy. So we both went with salads. My colleague went with the Matate salad, I was intrigued by the orange slices that came with it and was about to order the same. When the waiter suggested that I go with the Taco salad that I also inquired about. I am so glad he did. The salad was so flavorful it didn't require any dressing. The roasted vegetables with zucchini & squash, warmed the salad slightly which was refreshing. The cumin gave the salad an extra pop and the grilled shrimp was the perfect addition. It comes in a XL taco shell and I cleaned that shell out. I have been thinking about that salad for 3 days now. Planning to swing by next week for another one. Just A Note: Try the Taco Salad. Ordered takeout and have never been this disappointed in receiving what were, ostensibly, three hard shell tacos. The picture speaks for itself but the hard tacos were soggy and the ground beef bland. My mistake for not opening the bag to see this train wreck before I arrived home. read more

The first time I came to this place was about 4 years ago with a Groupon from my mother in law! We decided to come again because from what I can remember we had a good experience the first time! Our waiter & hostess were so nice & attentive! They start you with chips and dip which are fresh and tasty I was starving so thank you for that! We decided to have the calamari as a starter, great choice! They were yum and the chipotle sauce they come with was really good! My only complaint is that the breading was falling off a bit. For drinks I had a passion fruit margarita on the rocks with a Tajin rim & wow it was amazing (did not taste artificial what so ever)! My bf had a virgin piña colada and it was very yummy as well! For entrees I had a chicken burrito no complaints and my bf had the shrimp a la diabla! The shrimp had the perfect amount of spice and smokiness. Both dishes were very delicious we both loved meals! To end our meals I decided to have another margarita and my bf opted for a mojito he wasn't crazy about it so I definitely recommend the margaritas here! I brought my kids for lunch and it was a great idea!! We really liked the ambiance and decor of the place. Their choice of music (modern takes of Mexican and other classics) was really nice. My kids ordered the quesadillas, which were delicious (I stole a few bites). My mole poblano was, as well, (my daughter kept dipping her quesadillas in the mole sauce). The portions were *very* generous, at very reasonable prices. Maybe because it was an off time on a weekday afternoon but we felt so relaxed and In no way rushed to leave. We'll definitely be back! This was my 3rd and last time ordering from Metate. I live a few blocks away from this restaurant. They have been at least 30 minutes late in delivery every time, the food has been cold and the order wrong. I'm glad that they have such great reviews for in-house service but I will never order from them again. Better to go in-person if you are to eat from this restaurant. I love this place! Hidden gem in Riverdale! First visit was for lunch - Appetizer we had fresh quacomole - truly fresh and tastes so good. I had chicken fajitas (delicious!) and my friend had shrimp tacos (amazing!) Stopped by for dinner today - my husband had the filet mignon (yummy!) and I had the steak with sautéed onions and fried plantains. Oh my gosh! So so good! Drinks - we had pomegranate martinis (they were okay... Go to Mexican restaurant in the riverdale area! The food is always fresh and delicious, the guac is made fresh when you order it and has never disappointed, the drinks are great as well. The staff is always friendly and very welcoming. The restaurant is relatively small but gives a cozy feel so I would take that into consideration when choosing when to dine, service is quick once seated. I told the waitress, who took them away with not even a sorry, and that was that - no fresh bowl, no manager coming over to apologize, nothing, nada. Then the Enchiladas came out, a soggy mush, accompanied by a minuscule portion of black beans and rice that looked like it was disbursed grain by grain. I was highly disappointed at this restaurant. My friend tried to order chicken tacos (on soft shell) and only wanted chicken, lettuce and tomato on them. She was told by the server that they would not be able to make that for her because those weren't real tacos. She was told that she could only get lettuce and tomato if she ordered the tacos on a hard shell which is not what she wanted. At some point he said that the cook did not like to make "unauthentic" tacos. Long story short the server went to ask the cook if her tacos could be made with just the chicken, lettuce and tomato and the cook agreed but said it would be the last time... So many problems with their argument. Finally, if they only sell "authentic" tacos, why would they even have the option of a hard shell taco. The chips and tostada of the taco salad were stale, we waited 45 min as they kept giving the drinks they made for us to another table. When they finally made ours - they were wrong. They told us they would be comped and they showed up on the bill, the manager said since they were made we had to pay. Just a mess! I would literally give this place three or four stars, as their food is actually good for the most part as are their Margaritas. After ordering three Margaritas each, as well as a few appetizers, we ordered a Fajita to share, mind you they only give you three very small flour tortillas. We asked for one more and they wanted to charge us for an extra order of tortillas. We just wanted one! They outright refused, after we spent well over $150, they did not care if they lost customers over a lousy tortilla! Hard taco were soggy from the container vapors, so gotta remember next time to not order hard tacos when ordering out! It was definitely on the pricey side for the decent taste. This is by far the most disgusting food I've ever had. The service was horrible. The margarita sucked! If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. I ordered a burrito and chicken nachos. The nachos were bland and the chicken was under cooked. The burrito was nasty!! I took a bite and had to spit it out. I told the waiter and she told me that nobody else had a problem with the taste beside me. After complaining to another waiter and asking for the manager, I was told there wasn't any manager in the establishment. I was the charged half price for the burrito and full price for everything else. Non of which any one ate. Everything was thrown away.
