UPDATE: So we decided to take our parents here today.. wait wasn't bad around 10am Saturday- But once we were sat our waiter took forever to come over to us. Around ten minutes. We all ordered coffee but only brought it to three of us - I had to ask four times for my coffee! Then we get our food. Hash brown are usually fantastic but they come out with something like seasoned salt literally dumped all over them. Had to ask for plain ones (2 prior times no seasoning) I got the San Fran benedict. The poached eggs were way undercooked with the white still clear. I pointed it out and they brought two more - still completely undercooked. Not only is that GROSS but it's dangerous. They offered again but what's the point. I have gotten it twice before and was perfect both prior times. My dad got the biscuits and sausage gravy and it tasted like flour. They didn't cook the flour when they made it. Waiter didn't come back for twenty minutes to ask how food was. I would've ordered eggs that were correct sooner. Very disappointing. Don't know if we will go back. I didn't update before but last time the wait was 35 mins with ten empty tables. We watched one of them that sat empty for 40 mins. The hostess said the kitchen was backed up but it's way better to wait at a table with cofffee or a drink vs a bench covered with people. Waiter was so angry with four empty tables by the time we were sat. Metro was awesome and ranked a 5 star when it first debuted. However, their menu changes and product degradations lowered it to 4 star rank. The to die for bacon has been replaced with run of the mill thin cheap stuff with average flavor. The inconsistency of how they cook it is like a box of chocolate's, you never know if its crispy or undercooked rubbery fat. Once upon a time they made a thanksgiving stuffing Belgian waffle with turkey and gravy. Oddly, it was superb and really worked. A pleasant surprise. That innovation seems to have left Metro for staid diner cuisine. While it's still good food, it has become a staple normal diner. A welcome addition to the area for some diversity of food but they could easily get back that flare they had when they opened. Unsure why or what changed but I miss that energy and flare. 8/10 because there is always that one off chance you could leave there with an average impression more than once. The fried fish had more breading than fish. The fish was cooked to death and It felt like I was eating fish jerky. Gordon's fish sticks would be better. I don't suggest ordering fish at a diner. What was I thinking! I only had three packs of ketchup for my fries. That equals about a table spoon on ketchup. I also asked for extra cocktail sauce and behold there was not one ounce of cocktail sauce with my food. The mashed potatoes were awesome the slaw was good and the french fries were good. I visited the Metro Diner for the first time today. I can honestly say it was really good. I had the Bissell breakfast and the portion sizes were great. I made sure to let the waiter know that I appreciated the portion size for the price. The only reason I gave it four stars because it closes so early and the fact that it's all the way on 280. I actually wish it was closer to downtown and stayed open late. It would definitely be the spot to go to after a night of partying and when events happening in the city. Otherwise this is definitely a spot to patronize. I hope it puts pressure on other restaurants to quit overcharging for the portions that are way less than you get here. I will definitely be going back soon to try the burger and pretty much everything else on the menu. Good job! read more

I'm so glad I was introduced to this restaurant. They have the best Chicken and Waffles in Birmingham. I know many people will argue about this, but they literally give you half a chicken (leg,thigh, wing, & breast)to go with your waffle. The chicken is very flavorful and served hot and fresh. Unlike most places, you don't get a cold container of fake butter. You get a whipped strawberry butter that you could literally eat on its own. I've gotten the same thing each time I've visited. On my most recent visit, the daily special was the chicken Parmesan sandwich, which the waiter said is a rarity on the menu. My coworkers tried it, and although it looked delicious on other tables I couldn't get myself to go outside my box. It was a huge serving and just like the chicken and waffles, it's a dish that's hard to finish at one time. I think I'll try something different next time, but I've never gone wrong with the chicken and waffles. read more

Used to be one of our go-to places, but unfortunately, like so many successful establishments, in time they slip and stumble then they are gone. So seems the direction of Metro. Of course I give them some latitude for all the Covid and employment problems, but for the past 4 pick up or deliveries, the order has been missing something. Plus the quality of the food has become marginal at best. Too bad. It used to be a dependable place, but it has greatly deteriorated. We won't be back for a long time, if ever. Our area needs more good normal restaurants. Maybe the metro loss could be someone elses gain. Good luck guys. read more

My wife and I had the opportunity to stop by our shiny new Trussville location recently. We got there just before a large wave of various customers began to arrive. Service was quick, courteous and continued all through the meal. I had a daily special of cajun style shrimp and pasta while my wife opted for a menu item: shrimp and grits. My order wasn't spicy hot, but it was properly seasoned as was my wife's order. Both were very tasty (c'mon, did you think we weren't gonna share?) but I do regret that mine wasn't a regular menu item. We have also patronized the Hwy. 280 location when we were regularly in the area. Overall we gave it 4/5 stars. No deductions were made from the rating other than a lack of accessibility for handicapped patrons who can't handle high curbs. There is a ramped portion to the right of the door, but the parking spaces were all overfilled. There was other handicapped parking, but the access ramp available was blocked by improperly parked handicapped vehicles. This would prevent wheelchair bound individuals from entering the facilities there. I observed one such person, who left because there was no room to allow his wheelchair to pass between the improperly parked patrons. A second ramp should be installed by the property management. read more

I am heart wreched in writing this review on a restaurant I had begun to LOVE! As a frequent visitor my expectations was high. The food has always been good however like any relationship challenge is inevitable! My last visit was disappointing waited 40min for table sat with a previous waitress, I had on earlier visit that week! Did I say I'm at this restaurant at least 5 times or more a month and have brought over a dozen people! On this visit after waiting my order was incorrect ,side item cold, and one side missing. The waitress came by and apologized however the matter was never corrected! When the bill came I noticed I was charged for the incorrect order, so I called for a manager! A familiar Manager came out questioned my concern reprimanded me as a regular guest and told me "MAYBE THIS RESTAURANT IS NOT FOR YOU" I was floored ! Embarrassed in front of my guest who I highly recommended the place too! I asked her to leave the table out of disappointment! Call the GM he later response would only worsen the hurt! He concur that her decision was the company's sentiments as well. They no longer wanted my business I am SO HURT! My order was wrong, late, cold and I'm being told Never come back! Also, when I can eat a club sandwich later and take a slice of chocolate cake home too, is a winning combo for me too! We finally made it after coming by for two weeks and the line out the door on a Sunday Morning after church service (9:15). Although the wait is long, it's worth the wait! We ordered the Chicken and Waffles and the Bissell Breakfast. The chicken and waffles were the best I've had in a very long time. The chicken was so flavorful and crispy-just like homemade. The waffles were fluffy and Oh My the strawberry butter was to die for. The portion size was ENOURMOUS! The Bissell Breakfast was also very good and plentiful. We had so much food that we had to take home. Our server (Mark) was AWESOME!! My friend and I were in search of a new place to try for breakfast this Saturday morning... so of course the first place we checked for options was Yelp. We decided to try Metro Diner after looking at the reviews. It's gorgeous this morning, so upon arriving around 9:30, I asked if we could sit outside. That was a nope, as the hostess said the patio isn't "really available". Bummer, but we were still sat immediately. Our server Tommy came and greeted us right away and took our drink order. My friend got a coffee, I ordered a mimosa and a water. Bummer #2: they can't serve mimosas until 10. Now this confused me because I got a mimosa at the same time from Big Bad Breakfast down the street a few weeks ago, but oh well. On to the food--I ordered their famous chicken and waffles and my friend ordered the steak, eggs, and hash browns. The food came pretty quickly. The chicken and waffles comes with half a chicken so the portion size is generous. The chicken was very well seasoned but none of my food was hot. It could be because it's one of their popular dishes so they keep it sitting under the hot lamp. But if the butter on the waffle can't melt, I can't do it. The chicken was at the borderline of almost soggy like it had been sitting on a paper towel to drain the oil for awhile. It was still warm so I still ate it, but I had to request a hot waffle. My replacement waffle was hot so I'd give my meal a 3.5. My friend, however, didn't like his meal at all and that was primarily because he said the steak completely devoid of seasoning--no salt or pepper or anything. Just a cooked piece of meat. He said the eggs and hash browns were fine but the bland meat made the whole meal disappointing. So 5 stars for the service, -1 for my good but warm food, and -1 for my friend's hot but severely bland food. We'll probably try them again so hopefully they'll be better then. read more

The reports are true this place is really going down hill. The quality of food coming out of the kitchen has deteriorated significantly. I think my initial couple visits I was so pleased bc I stuck with corned beef hash and it was good. The most recent visit I branched out. Went burger special and wife went omelet. The omelet was ok they needed to serve the salsa on the side vs pouring in on a section of the omelet which is just another minor infraction in the litany of miscues we saw when we went in most recently. It was a meh omelet. I've had much better at Waffle House and IHOP. I had the burger special. The "'man burger". The fired egg was over cooked and not runny, it has less bacon and cheese than advertised and this was quite possibly the greasiest burger I've ever had in my entire life. The temp was near medium as I requested but the bottom bun was saturated and falling apart bc of the amount of grease in this burger. Our server borderline got defensive when I pointed out the menu board displayed a lower price than what I was charged. I was told it's been wrong all day, very matter of factly. As if something was wrong with me for believing what was written on the specials board. Didn't apologize or even attempt to correct. I let it go bc I didn't want to argue but most people would have at least apologized. They most certainly wouldn't have talked to me like I did something wrong. I think I'm done. I am super disappointed they've stopped caring about the quality/ presentation of their dishes. The vibe was way more hurried you're welcome for there privilege of coming here vs what was originally a cool throwback old school diner. read more
