We're out-of-towners and it was another basketball Mom's birthday. We celebrated with mimosas on the house! Our waiter was attentive, kind and just all around awesome. I was really underwhelmed by my experience here. The service was awesome and our waitress was very attentive, but the food & coffee was sadly lacking. So 4-star service, but def 2-star on the food! The coffee was very bland and the egg, bacon, cheese croissant I got was big, but also bland (I added some hot sauce, which helped) w/the croissant being way too mushy. I got the cheese grits on the side because they came highly recommended by the waitress, but they were way too watery and the cheese was very clumpy. I LOVE grits, but these were just not good and lacked the texture that grits should have. All in all, I don't know that I would be back. Went in with my daughter and right through the door the smell was heavenly. Was seated right away and the waiter came shortly afterwards. Having never eaten there before it took me a couple minutes to pick my food. We were there for breakfast. I'm vegetarian so it was a little difficult to find a meatless plate. Had the two eggs and hash browns with English muffin. The food didn't take long to come and was well prepared. It tasted great but I was a little disappointed that my choices were so limited. Make sure you don't miss the the specials board or ask what the specials are Hands down, my favorite breakfast spot in all of Charlotte. Proof in the pudding the breakfast innovations like strawberry butter and stuffed waffles you really can't get anywhere else. The price point is more than fair when comparing to the sub par competition. I absolutely love it here and as busy as they are the service each visit has taken pride in their work, prompt fast, friendly and suggestive. Chicken and Waffles are a must!!! This Metro Diner is always consistent. There is normally a wait for a table and the food is always good. I've had several items off the menu but I definitely recommend you have the Chicken and Waffles at least once. My favorite part is the hot sauce syrup they make for you at the table. My mom loves their grits and I give them major props for that because grits ain't easy and especially making them for the masses. I really love the self serve drink station they have up front for the waiting area. This a great way to keep customers happy while waiting for a table. The menu at Metro is very extensive and I'm excited to try some of the other items they have available like the cinnamon roll pancake. read more

So I'm gonna caveat this that food-wise I'd give this place 4 stars, but the service and the friendliness of the staff really were amazing when I went here. They were attentive and absolutely showed what great service is, despite the fact that there was a pandemic. This place did a good job from what I remember social distancing and it helped that I went during a weekday morning so less likely to be crowded. I got the chicken and waffles because I haven't had it in so long since I was in San Diego at Hash House a go go. This place hit the spot with the waffles just being erfectly crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on inside. With the fried chicken giving the contrast to the sweet flavor of the waffles and syrup combination with a more savory flavor, it packed quite a flavor combination. Likewise, the fried chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It was quite a large portion for about $14 so I ended up only eating half. Great experience. Came here for a early lunch. Was told it would be a 35 minute wait but we maybe waited 10 minutes. We got a cozy booth and was helped right away. I got the fried cod with french fries and a side salad. The cod was so tender and the breading was light. The tartar sauce was so good!!!! The side salad is a good portion plus it comes with a boiled egg! The fries were nice and crispy. My husband got the western omelette with fruit and hash browns and he loved it. We had to wait just a few minutes to get a table at 11:30 on a Saturday. I had to get the chicken and waffles again -- they are the best I've ever had. The strawberry butter is a great addition and the chicken is so juicy and flavorful. We also got a pineapple french toast which was a special. It was stuffed with cream cheese, pineapple, and a brown sugar glaze. It was incredible. The service is amazing here too. They are very attentive and you get your food pretty fast. I always enjoy a meal at a Metro Diner. This location was nice because they offered outdoor seating, which is good bc I'm still not comfortable dining indoors at restaurants right now. We got a huge breakfast spread and I especially enjoyed the avocado toast because it was chock full of avocado on slices of really hearty bread. I was craving a waffle and chicken and my yelp search led me to here. I'm so glad it did! The wait was under 30 mins, which you can't beat on Sunday afternoon. All the staff had on masks and the servers had on gloves. Tables were spaced out enough for social distancing. Once we ordered our food it came out in no more than 15 minutes and it was soo good! So boom, they have this strawberry butter with real strawberries and it was amazing on top of my chicken and waffles. The breading on the chicken was amazing and sooo flavorful. The food was so hot coming out and their spicy syrup sauce was the perfect added touch. If you haven't been here, you need to try it ASAP because it is amazing! Metro Diner is the sort of place I've been looking for for a long while. When you don't want to go all the way into Uptown for Midnight, I can head here to Metro and be just as pleased with the food. I stopped in Sunday morning before the after-church rush started and had a comfy seat at the counter. Facing into the kitchen, I was able to watch the food being prepared, see how clean and organized it is, and watch the meals be finalized before being brought out to diners. Interesting! I stuck with simple stuff, the corned beef hash and poached eggs. They were *perfectly* poached and the hash was much more beef than potatoes. A nice large portion! I have never been so sad to run out of chicken before in my life! I won't repeat what many have already said in their reviews, but I will say that I loved the hot syrup and the fact that you actually get half of a chicken instead of a couple of wings, which seems to be the en vogue way to serve chicken and waffles nowadays, was a huge bonus!
