Visit this place if you are super hungry and not claustrophobic! I go to Metro Diner for the food. I suppose I come for the ambiance too when I am looking for no frills, but it is really all about the food. My favorites are specials that aren't always on the menu: the Key Lime Stuffed Waffle and Chicken & Waffles. If you couldn't tell, I'm a waffle fan. Both of those dishes are so decadent and amazing!!! If you don't have a large party, check to see if there is any counter seating. The food is still worth the wait but sitting at the counter is like sitting at any other table in the place since it's a bit crammed. read more

Heavenly experience...the diner was clean and quaint. We were greeted by the nicest waitress (I believe she owned the place), her enthusiasm was infectious (thanks Barbera). Triple D brought me here and the food keeps bringng me back. this was my fourth visit here for breakfast and each time I have tried a different item on the menu. I have yet to be anything less than amazed. Surprisingly, there was no wait today (it's worth sticking around when there is) and we were seated right away. Hubby ordered the southwest omelet, black beans, chorizo, and other yummy goodies. I opted for the shrimp and grits. 2 fried cheesy grit cakes top with a wonderfully creamy sauce, shrimp ans crumbled bacon. Honestly I was disappointed. I ordered the shrimp and grits first and the presentation was great and looked like it would be delicious. I took a bite of the grit cakes and didn't find any real flavor to the dish. I liked at the shrimp and it had no seasoning on it. It's like one of those places that have little to no seasoning to cater to a general palate. The grit cakes were supposed to be stiffed with cheese and andouille sausage but I got through half of it and didn't find anything in there. The bacon pieces in the dish were the only thing that had any flavor as you can taste whatever they smoked it with. Well I didn't write them off so soon. I ate half the shrimp and grits and ordered the chicken and waffles. The strawberry butter was great. There were actual pieces of strawberry in it and added a great flavor to the waffles. Then I took a bite of the chicken and went back to disappointment. Again there was a lack of any real flavor. It was cooked well, I just wouldn't get it again. Not my type of place flavor wise. I saw the Metro Diner on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and thought, "I'll be passing through Jacksonville. It might be fun to check it out." When I got there on a Saturday afternoon, the joint was, as they say, jumping! I was greeted warmly and ordered the meatloaf. It was everything I'd hoped for. A huge portion with mashed potatoes and veggies. I think I put on a few pounds just looking at the other customer's meals. I'll have to get back again and try some other items. read more

Ordered hash browns and asked that they not be over cooked as they become crunchy sticks. Most of the has Browns were cooked to order but one end of them were crunchy straws. I went to this place on a Friday morning and it was packed. It has that great, "busy diner" feel about it. I had the challah bread stuffed french toast which was smothered in a strawberry-blueberry mix, and it was just as delicious as advertised. My friend had the breakfast pie, which was similar to what other restaurants call a breakfast skillet and he really enjoyed it. The menu was full of good choices and this is the kind of place that you want to keep going back to so that you can make sure you try all of them. Even though I like Metro Diner, I really don't understand the cult following behind it. Yeah, it's good, but it's not special in my opinion. It's fairly standard diner and breakfast fare. After looking over the menu and a lot of debating, I settled on the Bissell Breakfast because I wanted eggs and bacon. Hash browns and toast are just bonus points. And because I've been craving a Belgian Waffle for weeks, the waiter generously substituted a waffle in place of the pancakes for me (Yay for good service!). The waffle was deliciously crispy and sweet, yet light. The eggs and hash browns were the greasy spoon delicacies I'd been craving. The only thing I would've changed is the bacon - it wasn't quite crispy enough for my liking (but it was a great cut of bacon). You know what I was really digging? This is going to sound silly, but the plain toast with butter. I'm not sure why (maybe because I rarely ever have it), but it was rocking my world. Breakfast at Metro Diner is always a winner - especially when you can get there early enough to beat the crowd. We got there at 8:30, and there wasn't a wait yet. We live near their San Marco location, but have visited their Ponte Vedra and Southside locations as well. Frankly, We have been underwhelmed every time we visited. They are living off their Triple D Visit. Their Menu is kind of unique. The food is good, but quite pricey. Service was okay; but hectic. The long line is always annoying. I'm giving them 5 stars because I had today the Ruben sandwich and it is one of the best I have had. Also, the sandwich was meaty for the side I picked the fruits. They were fresh and a good amount of fruits. The first time I went, ordered the fried chicken and waffles 4 stars. The chicken breast was well cooked and juicy, what made it on point was the maple syrup and hot sauce to dip it in. They have a big menu a lot of things to try. We were seated pretty quickly. The waitress was friendly and helpful. My wife ordered a fried fish sandwich (can't remember name, but the menu said it was similar to snapper). It tasted good. Light, clean, but could've had a little more flavor. Hot sauce or tarter may have helped. I ordered the Pittsburgh Steak Salad. It was incredible. The Bleu cheese dressing was on point; Not too thick. The steak was terrific. I had it cooked to medium temperature. It was tender and choc full of flavor. In all honesty, the ringer was the French fries. They really were awesome! Overall I want to give this restaurant a 5, but I've only been there once so I'll rate as follows: Overall experience - 4.5 Food - 4.5 Staff - 5 Location & environment - 5 Worth going! We try to get here once and while, many years ago, you could always get in. Now its just too popular. the food and service never let us down though. Been here at least no kidding 100 times. but not as much last few years sadly. Still its one of the few that are worth a short wait. We had most everything they make, nothing is bad. I had breakfast at the Hunters Creek, Florida location today. The food was generally good. Two of the items I ordered were toast and a fruit cup. The toast came Un-buttered at room temperature but the pats of butter were refrigerated; difficult to spread. The fruit cup included strawberries, grapes, chunks of pineapple, honeydew Mellon, and cantaloupe. Both the honeydew and cantaloupe were cut so close to the rind they had hard spots and the taste was negatively affected. French fries were cooked maybe yesterday. They were very stale and I tried to crisp them in the toaster. Fries were so stale that they would not crisp. I threw them all away. This is an entire 1/2 chicken, a great deep Belgian waffle, and wonderful strawberry butter served with a hot sauce syrup that just compliments the chicken so well.
