Went here last night; a horrible experience. I'm not particularly noise sensitive, but it was ridiculously loud, even with plenty of empty tables. We waited quite a while for water and longer still to order. We started by ordering a glass of wine each - the Talbott chardonnay for me, a La Crema rose pinot noir for Rob. We chose these thinking that they would compliment the duck confit crispy spring rolls.
Unfortunately, the spring rolls arrived before the wine. So we waited....and waited...and waited. Finally we flagged down a manager, who got us our wine (and by then the spring rolls were cold). However, they were fantastic; ultra crispy on the outside and lush duck on the inside - and I'm not a big duck fan! They were served Vietnamese style. Unfortunately, our waiter did not know what that meant. He told us to wrap the spring rolls in lettuce but apparently did not know that there was also cilantro and mint on the plate. Nor did he know what was in the dipping sauce; he was like a deer in the headlights when I asked. He told us it was a "lemon grass soy". Uh - no. I don't think so. It was clear - no soy. If there was lemon grass, it had been strained out. But it was delicious.
Happily, when we FINALLY got our wine, it was great with the spring rolls.
I had also ordered the "crispy" brussels sprouts with aioli. This was a total failure; the sprouts had not been blanched, which would've been okay if they had been left in the pan long enough to cook through. When I do these, I put them cut side down in a skillet with clarified butter and cook slooowly until the cut side is crispy and the inside is tender; the flavor is nutty and mellow. These were hard. Not just crunchy, but almost raw. Raw, bitter brussels sprouts; not good.
The waiter asked whether we were ready for our main courses, but he didn't clear the table. We had a tiny table with 2 bread plates,a plate that held the bread, plates for the appetizers, the brussels sprouts plate, and the one that had held the spring rolls. A busboy did pick up the duck plate, but left all the rest, so Rob stacked them - and STILL no one picked them up! Finally he flagged someone down - again.
When our main dishes came out, we were out of wine and wanted to order more, but a different server dropped off our main courses and she was off like a shot. We waited...and waited...and waited. No one ever asked us whether we wanted anything. Our server was nowhere to be found, but another server saw us looking around and said he'd get it. He didn't. So the food was sitting there getting cold as we waited. Finally a manager noticed and got us the wine - eventually.
My main course was what was described as the signature dish; black cod on a crispy rice scallion cake with enoki mushrooms. The cod was cooked nicely insofar as it was very moist, but they had put the mushrooms on top of it, so the "crispy skin" was, well - not. It was soggy. The rice cake was not just crunchy; most of it was hard as a rock. I gave a piece to Rob without warning him, and he said "you could break a molar on this!" Rather than the enoki mushrooms there were battered, fried portabellas. These things are opposites on the mushroom scale. Enoki are small, delicate little 'shrooms that would have gone better with the dish; portabellas are large and beefy.
For his main, Rob had the hangar steak, medium rare, with caramelized shallots and herb butter. He substituted the rosemary fries for those that were supposed to come with the dish. Rob thought the steak was under seasoned; I disagreed, but we both wholeheartedly agreed that the shallots overwhelmed everything. I would say there was at least 1/3 of a cup of chopped shallots on his steak, and they were not caramelized in the slightest; they overpowered the steak and herb butter. After scraping most of them off, he thought the steak was okay. The fries, though, were just loaded with raw garlic; there was a little minced parsley, but not a bit of rosemary in sight - or taste. We like garlic, but we also like potatoes - it would have been nice to be able to taste them.
The noise made it a nearly unbearable experience. There was one table with 2 boys, probably about 10 years old, and the boys were yelling - not fighting, but just yelling for fun; their parents encouraged them. There was another table with two little girls - the girls were fine, but a man at the table was making funny faces and screaming at the top of his lungs to get the girls to laugh - over and over and over again for most of our dinner. NO exaggeration. I'm thinking - "What is wrong with these people"? Before the large party that had been in the bar was seated, it was cacophonous. Afterward, it was just deafening. Ambiance - awful. Service - terrible. Food - inconsistent at best; too bad they didn't use a little more finesse to let the ingredients shine. read more
