I first found out about Metropolitan Cafe when meeting family over the summer since this location was a couple of blocks from their hotel at the time. The main draw here is coffee + a variety of sandwiches that are made behind the counter after you place an order. There are several customizable options for each sandwich, such as type of bread, cheese, meat, etc. They have a good selection of sandwiches too, ranging from breakfast sandwiches to Italian meat subs, and Boar's Head ingredients are used in many of them. An eclectic assortment (some from around the world) of drinks, snacks, and desserts can be found around the store to complement your sandwich. This spot was around the corner from our hotel. We came here for a coffee quite late and got it. It is a cute breakfast spot and if I needed to get a breakfast, at non-hotel restaurant prices, I could get something. I think they are convenient for the hotel/convention crowd. I say that because they have coffee urn coffee and my husband said it was OK. I haven't been drinking coffee since my surgery, but I did taste his and it was quite good. They have some gluten free options, I had to ask for them and I would have loved to have gotten a sandwich or something on a gluten-free bread. I didn't see this option in the store, but read about it from a fellow Yelper. If I want a Sandwhich and don't want to hoof it all over town, I know that this is the spot to go. We went quite late at night and I was surprised that they had coffee. But I'm glad that they found them. I do wonder why the hotel never mentioned them to us. They were fast to get our order done. I ordered Soup and 1/2 sandwich. Soup was Chicken Noodle and Boren St. Reuben sandwich. Both basic originals and very good with my coffee. Every day they have alternating specials for lunch; for example this past Thursday it was an amazing spicy basil shrimp with jasmine rice. For about $6 I easily had 2 lunches. This place has everything youd want in a breakfast and lunch cafe, plus some. Good people and good food. In the morning you can come in and good a plate of eggs, hash browns or potatoes, sausage, bacon, and biscuits. Or a breakfast sandwich if you're in the go. They're lunch is also pretty good. They'll usually have a special item for lunch. The other day it was Chicken Alfredo. Yesterday it was barbeque meatballs. They also make a good variety of sandwiches and have a full salad bar. The owners are always nice and a pleasure to interact with and their prices are fair. I really love this place. There aren't a lot of good places convenient to Harborview Medical Center, sooo not a fan of the facility bistros. However when my husband saw Metro Cafe, we were so pleasantly surprised. The sandwiches are wonderful and obviously made with love. I've tried the Reuben, Veggie and Capresee and all were amazing. Service can be slower because I think it's literally one couple and their daughter but it's worth it. They also have Korean fried chicken which was SO GOOD! Highly recommend the soy garlic glazed and make sure you call ahead as it takes 25 mins at least to prepare fresh. I understand the need to raise prices from time to time, but a $1 jump for them seemed a bit steep.
