Ordered breakfast to go while staying in the hotel - we were quite impressed with our food - it was delicious, hot, and fresh tasting. Now, I did have pretty low expectations for 'hotel' food, and this far exceeded that. We both got the egg white/turkey sausage breakfast sandwich, which was delicious, and comes with hash browns. We both thought we'd just skip the potatoes, but after taking a bite, I had to eat about 2/3 of them - lightly crispy on the outsides and soft and flavorful inside. Very mediocre food and expensive prices. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, though! I ordered the bbq pasta (as a recommended meal) and it was probably one of the most underwhelming meals I've had in a while- way too soupy of a sauce and too many strange flavors for my palate. My boyfriend ordered the Cobb salad, which was surprisingly very well portioned and was tasty and filling. The bread served as an appetizer was fairly dry, however the mango butter was fantastic. For a nice building the restaurant is a big disappointment. The food doesn't "wow" you. We asked for a ribeye medium well and it was well done. Flavor was fair. We had a few gnats or flies in the seating area that was annoying. This place was just a large waste of money. I will say the manager did take the steak off the bill and I appreciate the free desert. Desperate for a meal while in downtown Kansas City, I went to Lilly's Restaurant inside the Marriott Hotel. While I was in KC, I was amazed how many businesses were closed or vacant in downtown proper. It seemed as though it was a ghost town. It was very eerie. The selection was not very good. I say this because I ended up getting the chicken salad sandwich on marble rye. That is what I was forced to consume, as everything else available was not desirable to my picky pallet. So if I am settling on a chicken salad sandwich you know something is amiss. The ambience was almost of a cafeteria or maybe something out of a Las Vegas mega buffet seating area. I was very disappointed. The final slight was the local beer served was 4 months past the "best by" date stated clearly on the bottle. Desperate for a meal in downtown Kansas City? Excellent food and such a classy environment! Relaxing ambiance...We stayed at the Downtown Kansas City Marriott October 4-7 and had lunch here... the service was wonderful as well as our food. My husband and I both ordered the BLT - Pecan Smoked Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato and Tomato Bacon Jam on Wheat Berry Bread and loved it! Never had a BLT like this! I ordered mine on Gluten Free bread and I think this was the first restaurant I've ever ate at that had such delicious GF bread! My husband also had the Tomato Soup which was very tasty! I had a side salad with their homemade Lemon-Oregano dressing also very tasty! Highly Recommend eating here! I can only imagine what their dinner is like! I have been to this place only once and I will be returning despite the service. I had gone on an empty Sunday afternoon, so I am going to assume this is the reason for the poor service. I walked to the host stand to find a sign which read "please wait to be seated," with no one in sight. So I stood and waited, awkwardly looking behind the big wall that is blocking the entryway, in an attempt to be seen. A host arrives about 3 minutes later (I was on the phone so I didn't care too much about the wait). I finally sat, and there was no server for at least 5 minutes. He arrives and brings me water, asks if I have any questions, then disappears for another 10 or 15 minutes. Luckily the manager was standing nearby, and took my order. I love discovering this place. I did not realize this gem was hidden within walking distance from my apartment. Conveniently located 10 steps away from folly theater. Perfect dinner spot to visit before going to any outing downtown. I went in with a group of 10, the place was dead and we were seated right away. The restaurant did get busier towards later in the evening but never overwhelming so that our server failed us. Our server was fantastic, he handled our large table beautifully. Our drinks were always full and bread basket was offered. The bread comes with two types of butter, classic and spicy cranberry. Go for the cranberry it's an interesting taste you will love. They offer burned ends pasta which I could not pass up. The pasta was mouthwatering melt in your mouth amazing. The balance between pasta and meat was perfect. It reheated beautifully and served as my next day lunch. The portion size is huge, I split it with a friend and still had leftovers. We were celebrating a birthday and our server was gracious and gave the birthday girl dessert on the house. The dessert tray consisted of 3 cakes! Lemon that was to die for, chocolate that tasted like fudge... very rich, and carrot cake. I didn't try the carrot cake because I've never been a fan but the table raves about how moist and perfect it was. I would highly recommend getting the lemon cake. Formerly known as Lilly's, Metropolitan KC opened recently after a major remodel. I had never eaten at Lilly's but one night while in town for business I decided to give this new place a try. Upon entering, I noticed the place was almost completely empty at 7:30 pm, with literally only one other table in the huge restaurant occupied with a couple. Should I run out? Isn't this a very bad sign? No...give a new restaurant a chance, I thought to myself. A kind sever came over to take my order and I instantly felt bad for her b/c I was literally her only customer. There was another server handling that couple I mentioned. But the hotel lobby was full of travelers and a convention was happening in the hotel. So where were all of the diners?? Food good? Check. I ordered the Kansas City steak with grilled asparagus and cauliflower mash. The steak was cooked perfectly to order and I loved the mash. The asparagus was just a little under cooked but not bad. Desert good? Check. I had the cheesecake and it was both decorative and tasty. Might have been store bought as there was no fresh-from-scratch "wow" factor. But I'll give the benefit of the doubt. It was good. Service? Well, let's just say we're working on it. My server was kind enough, but there was something awkward about the whole thing. She'd make comments when bringing the food over that I'm not used to hearing in restaurants. Comments like, "that's a lot of food," and "wow, you ate that fast." Okay I can eat a lot. But not that fast. And I work it off in the gym, I swear I do! How else would I look so nice & fit like I do?? [cry cry, sniff sniff] Okay I digress... Not a major problem, just like I said, a little awkward. And being the only customer for this poor server, I was surprised at how long I had to wait for things like placing an order and getting the check. She'd disappear somewhere behind a wall and I wouldn't see her for a long time. Maybe she was out in the streets trying to pull potential diners in. Drum up some business. I don't know. Anyway... I always say service can make or break a place. So while I recommend the food here, I think I'd pass based on the still-developing service and generally empty restaurant. I'd hate to miss a chance at some of the local specialties to spend an evening in here. Just my opinion. Christ, first time in KC and I blow $80 at this joint for a very poor food performance. Ordered the steak and shrimp special. I always worry how to order... I like my steak medium and more towards medium-rare than above medium. I made sure that I explained this to my waiter, who was very nice. The steak came out medium-well. WHY does this happen when I take the time to explain that I don't want it a hair past medium..?? SO frustrating. The steak was also horribly thin. I ate one shrimp. Tasted the potato, both they and the vegetables were just coated in butter/oil. I sent the steak back and asked for medium-rare with mashed potatoes instead and new veggies with NO butter/oil. That chef made sure to give me one less shrimp, too. You'd think he'd let me have an extra for effing up my steak, but no -- too much. Coffee drink for dessert and the coffee was cold. The server was nice, but other than that a really shitty experience. I should have walked somewhere else for dinner... was just so tired wanted to eat and get to my room to relax. Visited Kansas City for a conference and had a desire to visit MetropolitanKC due to their distance from both the KC Convention Center and the fact they were located at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown, where i was staying. The first thing you will notice is that the restaurant has a lunch buffet well placed towards the central part of the restaurant. I ordered the Chicken Cobb Salad, which left a surprise look on my face when it arrived. The portion was more then plentiful and the salad was refreshing. I tend to order extra dressing but can reviews that MetropolitanKC is one of those restaurants that dresses their salad with ample dressing. The staff at MetropolitanKC were very helpful and friendly. From the moment I was seated to the moment I paid the bill, the waitress and staff were always checking in on me during my visit. The restaurant itself was well lit and while on the formal side, it didn't stop folks from dropping by in T-shirt's and jeans. If you're in the Downtown area and limited on time, visit the MetropolitanKC located at the Marriott. I don't think you can find a place to beat the humidity, have a nice meal and still be back in time to attend your event. read more

I knew this place was gonna be bad when I read the reviews after I sat down. But I kept hoping I was gonna be one of those people with a 4 star experience. Okay. 3 star experience. I was willing to have a 3 star meal. Mostly because I had been up for over 24 hours and it was raining outside. I was definitely not in the mood to walk around looking for better food. Reasonable , right? Nothing was good about the experience. The server was so slow that I had figured out drinks, apps and dinner by the time she made it back. And she put in the entire order to be delivered at the same time. So I waited some more. She was nice though. So there goes the one star. The food was quite pathetic. The polenta cakes were dry and I couldn't find the pork they were supposed to be made with. The mashed potatoes that came with my salmon was cold so who knows how long it had been sitting in the back before it finally made its way to me. The salmon was flavored by the barbecue sauce drizzled all over it but lacked any sort of flavor outside of that. It was also quite dry. The green beans were good. But not good enough for another star. My check came quickly though. Good that I didn't have to wait for that on top of everything else. Would I have done things differently in retrospect. Absolutely. I would have taken the 10 minute walk to get something somewhere else. I have used Yelp long enough now to know not to ignore low overall reviews. There you go. Wonderfully friendly staff and a pretty crappy breakfast. Thursday, September 21, 2017 I spent some time trying to decide exactly whether I wanted to write anything about this establishment. Over the past several days I enjoyed many meals catered by the Marriott Hotel staff and assumed that their restaurant would be as good. It was not. First and foremost, the staff were all wonderful. From the lobby staff who pointed me to the only breakfast option I probably had in the area at 10:30 am; to the lovely young woman who greeted me warmly and sat me quickly so I wouldn't miss out on the option to order breakfast; and lastly the waitresses who would watch over me during my stay. Each was friendly, kind, and attentive. If the food hadn't sucked so badly, then perhaps their efforts would have mattered. I apologize for the bluntness but this meal was terrible. I ordered coffee, orange juice, and Eggs Benedict with hash browns. The Eggs Benedict were only slightly warm and drenched in an overly thick also merely warm Hollandaise sauce. The english muffin was barely toasted, and the ham was not cold at best. The flavor was ok but nothing to brag about. What is truly offensive is that this was the best part of the meal. The hash browns - yes the hash browns which are arguably the simplest part of the plating were an insult to the potatoes that gave their lives for this meal. While so picturesquely browned that I dove into them with my fork hoping to salvage the most important meal of the day, they weren't edible. They were so dry and hard and brittle I could barely cleave them with my butter knife and fork. They were so bad I actually sent them back. I don't send food back. While it's possible I may have done it at some point in my past, I don't even remember it. My waitress seemed appropriately embarrassed and tried to resolve things as quickly as she could. However, my new plate of hash browns would not arrive for at least 20 minutes and while partially browned were mostly just wet and warm. I picked at the few crispy sections and then gave up and left. I regret stopping in to the Metropolitan KC for several reasons: I suffered through a breakfast so bad I had to send back something to the kitchen; the experience tainted my view of an otherwise wonderful stay at the hotel; and I missed the opportunity to eat ANYwhere else. Unless you're desperate, skip the Metropolitan KC. There are far too many better places within walking distance. read more

Stopped into the Marriott located in the heart of KC to meet with a friend that was in town for a conferance. I was amazed at how busy the hotel was with everyone zipping around the lobby. First thing I did was walk straight to the bar that was right in the middle of the lobby and spoke to the bartender and ordered a drink while I waited for my friend I think the bartenders name was Tony. He was amazing! talked about sports and everything that was going on in the city! Once my friennd came down from his room we decided to go and have dinner at the restaurant in the hotel, Metropolitan KC. We walked up to the front host desk and was shown to our table. We sat for a second then was greeted by our server, I think his name is Mike. Mike was very polite and showed us things on the menu that were his favoite to have. I was craving a steak so I went with the KC strip. My buddy went with the Pork Stroganoff and WOW. My steak was cooked right! There are many times where you order a steak mid rare and it comes out either rare or medium. This was perfect! had the Asparagus and mashed potatoes those were great. My overall experience at Metropolitan KC was a good one and I would recomend this restaurant to anyone that was coming into KC. the prices are great, the people are friendly, the place is clean, and the food was very tasty! read more

Honestly, the worst part is the ambience. A steak joint should feel like it was opened in 1973. The decor should be cheesy and the lighting should be minimal at best. There should be table cloths on the tables and absolutely a candle in a glass container. This is not that. Maybe a step or 2 above a cafeteria in a retirement home. Honestly. At first I wanted to leave. I ordered a salad w ranch. Ribeye, med rare and a loaded baked potato, sour creme on the side. I didn't notice any signature sides like you find at other places. The young waiter, Drew, was a nice fellow, not a career waiter by any means but polite none the less, brought out some uninspiring bread, clearly brought in, with a whipped butter and an odd blueberry chocolate chip butter. Not a fan. He promptly brought the salad which I'd say was generous and decorativish....the ranch dressing was the best I've ever had. A reasonable 10 min later I received my steak and potato. Looked great. The steak was not some impressive behemoth but it had a very nice appearance. The flavor was actually quite good. I think I had low expectations based on the ambience. Shame on me. So. As mentioned I ordered med rare. 3/4 was med, 1/4 was rare. Not a tragedy by any means. The seasoning was very good and the steak was not tough by any means. The potato was perfect. Not mushy. Not hard. Hot with real bacon. If there was a 3.5 option I'd do that. If they had a better ambiance I'd do a 3.75. Overall. Give it a shot. Fact is it was only $42. No booze. I had lunch here during a conference. The only reason my friend and I came was because he had an afternoon flight to catch, and it was convenient. They promised a 20 minute wait, but managed to seat us after about 10 minutes. I ordered the special, which was a fried cod fish fillet with assorted greens, a special sauce, and a aide salad. I requested lettuce only on the sandwich with the side salad. My friend ordered a chicken panini with tater tots. The waitress had no trouble with his order, but I apparently blew her mind. She came back a few minutes later and asked me if I wanted the side salad because I had said lettuce only on the sandwich. I explained to her again what I wanted and figured we were good to go. Not surprisingly, my sandwich came out with the special sauce on it. So much for lettuce only. So, I just ate the fish fillet with with little side salad. It was a $12 plate. The fish fillet was crispy and had a mild taste. It was small, and I certainly wanted something else afterward since I got cheated out of my carbs. I did eye my friend's tots with envy all the while. He had no complaints about the food. Overall, I wouldn't go back unless I was in a pinch. BF got me breakfast to-go here when we checked of the hotel. I wanted waffles very badly on Saturday morning but apparently In-gre-di-ent (or whatever) was closed. Belgian waffle was very good, but the bacon was absolutely amazing. I was really impressed that they packaged up everything separately (sorry, Mother Earth) including putting the syrup and butter in individual containers. It made transportation and eat-ation much easier. I had never thought to dine at Lilly's simply because it was in the nickle-and-diming Marriott, but if I'm ever back I would probably give it a try. read more

Decided to try out the Metropolitan KC located in the Marriott before attending a show at the Music Hall. And that without checking Yelp for reviews. We dined there on March 3, 2015. Since it had been sometime since either of us had been inside the Marriott, we were standing at the hotel map, when a man in a chef's hat stopped and asked if he could help. After chatting a few minutes, I asked him about the Metropolitan KC. Dummy me, what's a chef going to say but they serve good food. He raved about the BBQ saying their brisket was slow cooked for 10-12 hours. Slow cooking BBQ is good. So we checked in at the front desk, and found about 5 other tables occupied at 6pm. Seated quickly and the server took our drink orders quickly. When the drinks arrived we ordered. She, the barbeque salad with creamy barbeque dressing. I opted for the char-smoked beef short ribs, recommended by the chef, with sauteed green beans for the side. The meals were served in a reasonable amount of time. So that's the end of the good part. The salad, with what was advertised to contain Burnt Ends "Most Tender Piece of the Brisket" was in fact burnt for sure, but far from tender. Tough as my wife called it. As for the short ribs, they were served without the bone and were for sure charred. The meat was dried out and tasteless, save for the BBQ sauce. The green beans and sweet potatoes fared much better and were very tasty. The sad thing is that a visitor to KC, known for it's fabulous BBQ, who might eat here in hopes of getting some authentic KC BBQ, is going to go away very disappointed. It is interesting that no time after we received our meal did our server, or any other staff, ask about the quality of the food. Now I know why. From my perspective, it is best to stay away from Metropolitan KC if you want good KC BBQ, because you won't find it here, or at least, we didn't find it on a Tuesday night. read more

I tried to order the only vegetarian entree without mushrooms, but they said the pasta sauce was pre-made so they could not take them out. The staff didn't clear any of our plates at all during the meal. After our entrees were served, our waitress didn't check on us for over ten minutes. Most of the staff we interacted with made it very apparent they did not want to be here, with the only exception being the staff member who said goodnight to us as we were leaving. Went to the Ed Sheeran concert a few weeks ago and decided to make a night of it and stay at the Marriott. We went with eating dinner at the restaurant located in the hotel before the show since there was no wait and we were running late. As a local who has explored most of the well known dining areas in Kansas City I was surprised. The quality of the salmon was great, and the green beans were cooked perfectly. Their wine selection is also impressive, I went with the full pour of La Crema Pinot noir and it paired perfectly with dinner. After the show we considered going to pizza bar or the Quaff down the street to eat again, but went with just going to the lobby bar to have another glass of wine. I went here because I had breakfast with a coworker who was staying at the hotel so it was convenient for her. I had never been so I was OK with it. This place isn't bad. Breakfast was a typical hotel offering. I've experienced it at restaurants located in other Marriotts in other cities. Lilly's offers menu options but also does a breakfast buffet that has fruit, cottage cheese, a few cereals (mainly granola), yogurt, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage links, turkey sausage patties, pancakes, biscuits and gravy. There may be a few additional items. I went ahead and did the buffet because my coworker had vouchers. So, it made sense. The food was fine. Nothing to write home about but also nothing offensive.
