Order was wrong . Yet, of course they insisted it was correct as if i don't know what I Just ordered. Food did not taste fresh. Everything had a weird after taste. Should have. tossed it out because now I hope that I don't get sick. Soup was greasy. Charged for take out containers ... and the containers were dirty with black marks all over it on the outside. Had the tuna salad sandwich; for a $9.50 sandwich you would think that they would at lease use white tuna which is often on sale for $1 per can at the local ShopRite. Their tuna salad sandwich tasted like cat food; the sweet potato fries were great; actually the best thing. It was nauseating trying to even attempt taking a bite so I didn't eat it. The server came by and asked if I wanted a box for it; I said no, but what I really wanted to say was I need a barf bag. I do want to say that the server was patient, but... I had asked for my soup to go and I forgot about my soup and so did the server; that was my fault for not remembering something I paid for but it would have been great if the server was mindful. I've been to many diners; New Jersey is know for their diners...I'll never go back to this one for a tuna sandwich. read more

Not a lot happening it was in the 8 o'clock hour. Seated rt away, waitress was very nice n cordial. Menu was usual diner menu, food arrived on time, dinner for breakfast, Ceasar salad w/ grilled chicken, spinach and feta egg white omelet and eggplant peppers n mozzarella on nice roll. The diner looks tiny on the outside, but it is much more spacious once you're actually inside. We ordered a grilled chicken panini. The panini bread is too thick for a panini; it was more like a roll. It didn't taste bad, but the bread being so thick made it a little hard to eat. Some of the spinach in the panini tasted fine, and some of it was very bitter. We opened up the panini and saw some of the spinach leaves were wilted and darker in color. We picked out the spinach. The rest of the panini was not bad. The chicken was good, and the mozzarella cheese was melted throughout. The fries were much better than they looked. A 4/5 easily. Pros: Staff is extremely friendly. Diner is clean. Staff is accommodating and don't give you a hard time if you want to change your order in some way. Cons: There is no major con that would make you not come back to the diner again. The food was just okay; we would not be opposed to returning to this diner and trying something else next time. If you must know, it's taken me a very long time to be able to spell the name Metuchen. It's taken me equally as long to be able to say it. Anyway, not that it's relevant to the diner, but I met my good friend at the Metuchen Diner a couple of weeks ago. It's only about an hour north of me, and it was an easy drive on the turnpike. Atmosphere: There is nothing unique or exciting about the Metuchen Duner. It's a stereotypical NJ diner.  The inside has plenty of booths, tables, and a full-length bar. It's cleanly and there is plenty of space but nothing too exciting. Coffee: The coffee was great.  The waitress kept it refilled all of the time, and I have no complaints. Food: The Metuchen Diner has everything a diner wants or needs.  There are plenty of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. I was feeling "somewhat" healthy and decided to order the grilled portobello salad. The salad came with grilled portobello; I added salmon. The salad was good, but I wish it were a little larger. It also came with soup, and I decided to choose Matzah Ball soup. I haven't had it in a while.  It was nice because it came with two actual Matzah balls which you rarely see. Dessert: We both decided to order dessert.  I chose the bread pudding, and I will say, it was one of the best bread puddings I've had in a while.  There were huge pieces of bread, as well as raisins which I really enjoyed. I would go back just for the bread pudding. Service: The waitress was one of the best waitresses I've had.  She was friendly, refilled everything, and our food came out quickly. The food and our waitress were good, but this place is run down and needs repairs. While we were there, the roof started leaking and a stream of water was falling to the floor right beside us. The staff were alerted and they put a bucket down, but that's not a safe or pleasurable experience for diners. I got the Tel Aviv omelet and it was tasty, but had way too much cheese in it. Metuchen Diner in the redeveloping heart of this Central Jersey city is the typical urban stainless Jersey diner with huge menu, countertop spinners for solo customers, and a cool refrigerated display case loaded with the overstuffed desserts that these institutions are famous for. They serve breakfast 24/7, and as I was there around 1 PM and looking for my morning meal, I knew they would supply what I was hungry for. And, they did. I was in the mood for eggs and corned beef hash in some form that would provide the nourishment and flavor I sought. They had the raw ingredients, but not in the combination I desired. My lovely server understood my plight and suggested that I order a plain 3 egg omelet and have a side of the hash placed within the egg shell, rather than on the side. Great idea! I just wish I had thought to throw the well done home fries in there, too. Next time. The creation was exactly what I was looking for. Still moist eggs with a shovel full of savory hash within. Tasty, and oh so filling. Didn't need to finish the potatoes, but enjoyed the truck load they dumped on the large platter. Just as good, the rye toast slices were larger than most, and very compatible with the rest of the meal. No need for sweetening with jam. I prefer the subtle saltiness from the butter absorbed in the bread. Bunn-O-Matic coffee was hot and strong, and available for refills as often as needed. Smallish parking lot, but big enough this Saturday afternoon. If you are a Jersey diner connoisseur, Metuchen Diner is worth a visit. read more

Never order for pick up, the lady judges you if you don't leave tip even if it's a pick up order. She said "the server packed the food for you that's why" so I have to leave a tip so somebody does his job? I understand if I'm sitting down and there's a server literally serving me and making the costumers feel comfortable, but I'm picking up, unbelievable. read more

I hate to say this but I got the turkey club today and it was beyond disgusting. Normally you get sliced turkey breast but here you get like sliced turkey straight from the bird. It was dry and discolored meat. No mayo either. I will say the burgers are fantastic but DO NOT get the turkey club under any circumstances! read more

First & LAST time here. Waitress took my order. I needed sugar but there was none at my table so instead of bothering her I just took some off of an empty table next to mine. Person at the register then walks over to the table where I borrowed the sugar & starts looking around the table pulling out the chairs and then walks away. She does that 2 more times then when she realizes I'm watching her she finally walks off. One of the items I ordered had an awkward taste so I sat it to the side to tell my waitress thinking she would check up on me but she she never bothered. I just went to the Metuchen with my husband and my 2 year old grandson. The food was ok, but they are thieves. I ordered sweet potato fries, which they charged me $2.00 for a very small portion. the thing that was beyond horrible was that I asked for a tiny cup of applesauce instead of butter and syrup for my 2 year my grandson's children's pancakes for dipping. They charged me $1.50. I think that was atrocious. When I complained, I was given a smile like she was saying "too bad". I then said that I would never go back because they were thieves and she didn't flinch at all. I mean, it's a diner. Nothing more. Nothing special. The rating is more so 2.5 stars--not 'cause it's particularly bad, but it is particularly mediocre/unmemorable. It's a quiet diner, filled with mainly elderly customers--I'm assuming regulars who aren't on the hunt for the next best thing. The service was good, but not especially stellar. The waitress was nice, and our food was served in a timely manner. The food was, well, diner food--again, not bad, but not extraordinary either. Got take out. Me: Buffalo chicken wrap w/ curly fries. Excellent. Spicy, great flavor, generous serving. Lady: Chicken gyro w/ disco fries. She loved it. Metuchen apparently needed a new diner. There hadn't been one here for a long time. This is the former spot of the Duchess Diner which hadn't been open in many many years. You come here on a weekend night and the lines are out the door. As I said, Metuchen needed a diner. This was my first time walking into this building since it was the Duchess. It had been a long time. I miss diner's. Where I currently live there really aren't any diners. Or at least not diner's like I know them from growing up in this part of the country. You know a Jersey diner when you are in one. They just have a certain feel. Like all diner's the menu here is huge. It might take you a good 30 minutes to go through the whole thing. Dad and I stuck to the salad portion of the menu. I would usually get a burger or something of the like, but I was feeling like a salad on this night. I had the Greek salad with chicken ($10.95). Like everything on the menu and practically everything you will find at a diner in these parts the portions are huge. This salad could easily have fed 2 people. Full of lettuce, onions, tomatoes, kalamata olives, feta cheese and other assorted goodies and topped with chicken (that brings the salad from $8.95 to $10.95) it was very flavorful and very fresh. I was expecting this place to be pretty "standard" like many Jersey diners due to the mixed reviews and the plain looking exterior. This was originally intended to be a 3-star review, but my group really enjoyed everything we ordered (including the sides). Yankee Pot Roast with Lentil Soup ($10.99): The lentil soup was warm, flavorful, and certainly filling on its own. As for the pot roast, it was tender, plentiful, and not dry. It comes with a generous serving of brown gravy on the side, which I found to be just right with regards to flavor. The menu says you get one other side dish to pair with potato pancakes, but I was told I get to pick any two that I like instead; I opted for the vegetable of the day (carrots) and mashed potatoes. The carrots were a bit too soft to my liking, but were tasty nonetheless. The mashed potatoes were perfect: It was smooth but still had chunks of potato--just how I like it. My group also ordered the Half Fried Chicken in a Basket ($12.99) and the open-faced Twin Sandwich with Corned Beef and Pastrami ($8.49). Both were said to be delicious, including the soup and crispy fries that came with both orders. The four pieces of chicken were crispy (you could hear the crunch) and juicy, while the corned beef and pastrami sandwich was said to be excellent and "the best I've had so far." I tried the latter, and it was pretty good. Although there were only two other groups dining, the service was great--particularly from the gentleman who took our order; he has short hair, a light beard, and wears an orange polo shirt. Friendly customer service is hard to come by nowadays, so my group thoroughly appreciated it. I know Main St. has plenty of great restaurants and cafes, but this is a solid neighborhood diner that I'd be happy to have lunch at again. read more

It is overpriced for the quality of food, but maybe the prices are jacked up for the cost of being in downtown Metuchen. Going to a diner like this for breakfast shouldn't cost +$40. She got the bill and it was 25% more than menu showed. She paid and ask why the price was so high " Because everything went up in cost.. We understand that but 25%?? Ordered chopped steak and meatloaf. Wife's order was missing coleslaw and the meatloaf was chewy and tasteless. The chopped steak had a better consistency but was also bland and tasteless even with the mushroom gravy, which was also not that great. Not too sure how to go about this review but here goes. First I placed an order over the phone for 2 breakfast meals and 1 kids meal. Upon arrival I realized the total was a bit much, for a diner that is. The lady reviewed the order & noticed 2 items I didnt order. Okay np, that was taken care of but still a bit high for what we had ordered. Any who, very disappointed in the kids chicken fingers meal. First the meal cost $8.50. Its a kids meal. It literally cost more than my egg platter & the breakfast sandwich. Okay another np. But only to find out these chicken fingers & the fries that it came with were disgusting. I'd probably get better chicken tenders at a carnival. I would never feed my child chicken that felt and looked the way that they did.
