I've spent enough money on tasting menus to know that price and quality have only a passing acquaintance with each other. Plenty of restaurants can charge $300 a head and still make you feel like you're inconveniencing everyone in the room simply by showing up. Niku X was not one of those places. The beef was spectacular. Of course it was. At this price point, that's the minimum requirement, not the achievement. The real surprise was the service. Nobody was selling. Nobody was performing. Nobody launched into a rehearsed monologue about the menu like they were auditioning for community theater. The staff knew the food, knew the room, and most importantly knew when to get out of the way. Recommendations felt honest. Courses arrived when they should. Empty plates disappeared. Water glasses refilled themselves. The whole thing ran with the kind of quiet competence that's become almost shockingly rare. Maybe that's what impressed me most. There are AYCE establishments and there's fine dining but to combine the two? That's where Niku X steps in. Not to be confused with other similarly named establishments with the word "Niku" in their name, look for the "X" on the map because that marks the spot where you'll find a hidden treasure. Part of the Chubby Group (formerly Chubby Cattle), Niku X is a luxury Japanese steakhouse located in downtown Los Angeles at the Wilshire Grand Center. There is valet parking as you enter the main parking entrance which can be validated by the restaurant. Afterwards, we made our way up to the second floor. We had arrived just before they had open their doors for dinner but the moment we walked through those black double doors, the host(s) and server(s) were lined up and each guest was greeted and shown to their tables. I felt like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory and I swore I heard "Pure Imagination" playing in the background. Specializing in Japanese style BBQ known as "yakiniku," which literally translates to "grilled meat," their menu offers the highest grade and premium quality of meats ranging from Japanese A5 to Australian wagyu along with the finest cuts such as ribeye, sirloin and thick-cut tongue. From the self-serve area, their choice of meats include A5 brisket, A4 sirloin, chef's choice of A5 and Australian cuts, and even wagyu bone-in short ribs (galbi). The seafood choices shined as well from the prawns to the lobster tails and the hand rolls but do not dare overlook the signature dishes. From the kick of the wagyu tallow shishito peppers, the sweetness of the marinated eel, the juiciness of the steamed lobster, the way the miso Chilean sea bass literally melts in your mouth, the unique combination of wagyu beef tartare and caviar in the wagyu caviar handroll, each dish was a champion in its own right. But the most visually pleasant dish of all, the potato pavé. This thinly-sliced, layered, fried, scalloped potato cube was the most popular and recommended item to begin with and it did not disappoint. It will literally change the way you eat potatoes. Execute." - Richie, The Bear This means paying close attention to a guest's wants and needs, without waiting for them to tell you and the Niku X waitstaff along with Kelly, whom we had the pleasure of having as our server, did just that and more. Kelly was not only welcoming and informative but incredibly helpful in regards to suggesting dishes or offering recommendations but she really went above and beyond when she gave us a tour of the self-serve area and explained each station. A staff member who brought our first round of meat began grilling them then cutting them into smaller pieces before placing on a wooden board and explaining to us what each cut is then recommended seasoning the meat with their salt and pepper blend. Throughout the evening, more guests have filled the restaurant and the ambience became busy but the waiters constantly refilled our waters and cleared our table of any empty plates. Kelly never failed to appear and check up on us and strike up a conversation which was very comforting. She really showed us that she genuinely cared about the guests and displayed what true hospitality is. Niku X has broken the stereotype and redefined what fine dining is. It is no longer dishes with the word "deconstructed," "emulsion," "foam," or "a hint of" in its description. Niku X describes themselves plain and simple, respectively; they're a luxury AYCE (not a buffet) establishment that serve high quality meats and seafood that you can enjoy to your heart's (and stomach's) content but it's not just the food that guests will remember about Niku X, it's the staff who served them that will bring guests back. I was recommended to come here by a friend of mine. Didn't disappoint me! Service was incredible, the servers were very tentative. Came by every few minutes to see if we needed anything. When you first view the restaurant you get an incredible fine dining vibe. Very social media friendly photos. When you enter the facility, you can see the buffet and it is not your ordinary buffet. This is a step up by what you may formally imagine a $20-30 AYCE buffet. Seating was very spacious, there were 4 members in my party including myself, we were at a booth and the booth looked like it could handle at least 6-8 people. Grill in the middle for our wagyu meats. As for the food, I got a little bit of everything from the buffet just to try and it was great. You were able to grab meats for your grill, the fried rice was cooked with wagyu, seafood was available, but the real winner would be what's on the menu. Everything was fantastic. Just an fyi if you wanted soup, I recommend the duck over miso. Tried both, miso is miso so I wasn't impressed, but the duck had a stronger flavor. Niku X was my family's go to for celebrations and occasional gatherings but after this experience we don't know if we will be returning. For one a lot of the food quality has gone down. King crab has gotten smaller but now you have to order it which was a problem because our server almost never came by our table so we had to call other random staff to ask for help.Large prawns were replaced with small tiny shrimp and the lobster tail used to be a lot bigger in our last visit but this time they were small and we struggled to get the meat out. Not sure if the duck was included but no one ever explained anything to us so we didn't get to try it but we saw it on the way out. The choices seemed a lot less overall than before. Not sure if it's because one of the sections were replaced with egg tarts and cheese tarts. Also I'm a chubby member and saw later after I got home from the receipt that price is different than what was listed on the menu. Our total came out to 114 pp after the membership discount. The guy who we thought were our server always skipped our table, he kept going back and forth and never came back after taking our order in the beginning. It was the weirdest thing. Celebrated my birthday here this past Saturday with my family, and we had an amazing time! We really enjoyed the food here and everything we got were fresh and delicious. The snow crab legs were definitely a family favorite, and don't skip the yuzu cheesecake for dessert--it was the perfect way to end the meal. They also have a good selection of different drinks - cherry blooms has been my favorite mixed drink from here. The service was excellent as well. Not going to lie - we had initial concerns when we realized Niku is NOT in the hotel, but instead was outside in the back behind the valet area. Our concerns were further heightened when we reached the front entrance, as it was giving "low-budget all-you-can-eat" and not what we saw on Yelp. We were also quite surprised to realize that half of the restaurant allows for self-grilling... that was not the vibe we were going for, it was quite smokey, and I was wearing white on white. However! We were moved to the other section with pretty decor, comfy booth seating, where they bring out ready-made skewers to the table - everything turned around from there. Lobster, wagyu, sashimi, caviar, and so much more - YUM! We made sure to get all the best stuff to maximize our experience. We had to order in small orders, which wasn't a problem at all. Niku X is part of the Chubby Group. Knowing this information, I didn't have high expectations for this place. The chain of restaurants that are involved in this group are mediocre at best. They are selling a fantasy of a high end experience while providing low quality service and food. The menu at Niku X is quite overwhelming. I didn't know where to start so the server basically ordered and recommended everything to try. There was so much going on from the appetizers that were being served, the meat being cooked on the grill, and the open buffet of food. Literally nothing stood out to me. I think the appetizers were better than the japanese bbq itself. For $150 per person, I expected at least quality dinnerware. The plates themselves are PLASTIC. Please give me a break. Another Chubby production hits the mark :) Before you decide to just come, make sure to have reservations. I came on a Thursday with reservations and still had to wait 15 mins before hand. Traffic wasn't too crazy around 6:50 pm from Orange County. Your looking at 45 mins to hour to get here. Once you get here, you will have to park in a parking garage lot. Don't waste too much time trying to find parking in downtown. Once you valet or park, take the elevator to the second floor and here you are. Check in with the receptionist, time seem so long while we was waiting lol. Finally got to our table, the setting is quiet, good for groups and date. If you been to chubby cattle, kinda like the same thing but instead you tell your waiter what you want to order. Theres a buffet on the side too. A lot of options from meats to seafood. All in all food was fantastic, waiter was on point. Designs was cool. I think the timing of reservations needs a little work, if your charging people to make it here on time, then there shouldn't be no waiting then 5 mins. read more

UPDATE: Came back here for my girlfriend's early birthday celebration dinner, and it was honestly a disappointment compared to our previous visits. We had a 6:45 PM reservation but weren't seated until 7:15 PM. It really felt like they only gave us a table because we finally went up to the host to ask why we were still waiting 30 minutes past our time. Not a great start. Once we got seated, things didn't get much better. I ordered a cocktail that took a while to come out. We had already ordered and received two rounds of sides and meats, and still no drink. I had to flag down our server to follow up, and it finally showed up shortly after. Then came the main issue. My girlfriend went straight for the crab legs and noticed only snow crab was out and it honestly wasn't as fresh as it should be for the price. Toward the end of dinner, I saw a different server carrying out Alaskan crab legs. When I asked our server, she told us they still have them, but you have to order them directly through her now. This wasn't written on the menu at all. If I hadn't happened to see someone else get them, we never would have known. I went ahead and ordered two orders (4 legs total), but it took over 20 minutes to get to us. Pretty good spot. We got the $500 tasting menu, which the course meals were all so good, and nicely plated. Though, I thought the main course which was the wagyu tomahawk lacked flavor surprisingly. $16.95 for valet parking, only had $149 menu available for July 3, but they allowed us to sit earlier (came in 5 but had RSVP 5:30). They gave us a small booth for a part of 2 (I prefer booths over table and chairs). I did a walk by to see what food they had and saw somebody check the temperature of all the food, so it looks like they take food safety seriously. ****Just a note the plates for the buffet are on the bottom. When we're trying to get food this couple was standing there waiting for plates until they saw us grab the plates from underneath the food area**** Previous people have said that the service is bad, but service is actually really good. The staff worked together to ensure that the plates are taken away promptly, drinks were filled before it hit 1/4 empty, and we had two different waitresses check on us to make sure everything was going well ( Emily & an Asian lady). Since I was cracking the crab legs for us, staff members came by different times to drop off a stack of napkins.. cuz each time they dropped off the napkin I stuck it on the seat between us to give us more plate space. We opted to have no grill, we have a Korean barbecue at home so no need to do extra work here. I really liked how they cook the meat perfectly, and the meat had a nice charcoal flavor. I normally like my beef cooked rare, but I would say for wagu it's better to have it as medium rare or well done. I thought they'd have more items in the buffet but the quality of the buffet food was good. The salmon had a truffle flavor to it, none of the fish taste fishy. We also had the Alaskan king crab legs, and they do provide scissors at the buffet. The wife had the lobster roll and said there was actually a lot of lobster inside of it. So if you like lobster you should probably consider the lobster roll because the cooked lobster was hard to get out of the tail (I also struggled to pick them up with the tongs). The dessert was really good. The Portuguese egg tarts had a nice buttery flaky pastry shell. The other dessert was some sort of cream cheese tart that was very soft and gooey had a nice balance of sweetness. The wagyu meat here is very good. And they don't add salt, they let you do it yourself which I really appreciated. If you do get flavor fatigue easily, you may get it here and the meats do get heavy, but this place would be a nice date night experience. When it comes to a standout dining experience, the Chubby Group has yet to let me down, and Niku X just may be their finest concept in Los Angeles. Located in the Wilshire Grand Center, which also happens to be the tallest skyscraper in LA, this modern yakiniku restaurant centers its menu around premium Wagyu beef and offers an indulgent spread of beautifully marbled cuts, fresh seafood, and expertly prepared dishes, all served buffet-style in an all-you-can-eat format. With the Premium A5 Wagyu menu at $149 per person, you can enjoy A5 ribeye and strip loin, along with other cuts from Masami Ranch domestic Wagyu, like thick-cut beef tongue, as well as grilled king crab legs and other seafood. On top of the BBQ portion of the meal, you also have access to their buffet, where you can grab sushi, skewers, and even other meats from the $109 menu. They also feature live stations where the chefs hand out specialty dishes, such as Peking duck wraps. We actually made our reservation for Christmas dinner, so the restaurant was quite busy that evening. Even so, our servers were attentive and provided a seamless experience from start to finish. We will definitely be keeping Niku X in mind for future special occasions and celebrations and look forward to returning. read more

We visited NIKU X during lunch and opted for the $35 add on which includes additional items like thick cut beef tongue, Australian wagyu strip loin and ribeye, Japanese A5 top sirloin rump and lobster. You can help yourself to the food bar or order from the chef. A few things that we liked from the chef were the Wagyu tallowed mashed potatoes, potato pave, and brussel sprouts. You definitely need items from the chef to cut thru the richness of the fatty Wagyu cuts. From the self serve bar, we liked the Japanese A5 Chefs Choice because of the fatty marbling. They also had crab legs, mussels, dim sum, skewers, yogurt, salad, green beans, and chicken wings. We also loved the egg tart and cheese tart over the dessert cakes in the enclosed casing. The cakes they had were tangerine cheesecake, chocolate cake, and earl gray and chocolate Swiss roll. I would say that the self serve bar was underwhelming. They did not have any other sashimi items during lunch except for yellowtail on a clam. The star items for me were the lobster, beef tongue, ribeye, egg and cheese tart. The ambiance was very nice. They had booths to seat large parties and the bar area was upscale. It's in downtown LA and we walked by an unsafe spot. Overall, glad we checked it out. read more

Niku X is such a cute little upstairs spot tucked inside a fancy restaurant--definitely gives that elevated, special-occasion vibe right when you walk in. I really appreciated how the staff took the time to clearly explain my Chubby Cattle membership. Turns out it only applied to one location, so I had to upgrade--but honestly, the upgrade worked out in my favor since it gave me a better discount than the other offer I had been texted. That level of transparency was a huge plus. Service across the board was amazing. Everyone was welcoming, attentive, and on top of everything all night. They absolutely do not lack in service by any means. That said... I was a bit let down by the seafood. Based on reviews and Instagram photos, I came in with high expectations. The king crab legs were noticeably smaller than expected and unfortunately a bit dry when eating them. The standout for me was definitely the colossal shrimp--those were excellent. The steamed lobster was good, but not quite great. One small suggestion: it would really improve the experience if they either trimmed the underside of the lobster shell so it's easier (and safer) to hold, or pre-loosened the meat from the shell after slicing it open. It was a bit of a struggle to get to the meat, even though the flavor itself was solid. Since I went on my birthday, I did get a larger discount, which was a big win and honestly one of the main reasons we chose to go tonight. Overall, I'd say it's worth trying--especially for a celebration--but probably not somewhere I'd go just for a casual night out. read more

Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. Presentation was top notch, although quality was a bit inconsistent. Ambiance was pristine and elegant. I loved the flower walls. Service was also great, our waiters were very attentive and efficient. Hospitality here was greatly felt. It could have been that we came on an off night, but the meat was chewy and the lobster was stuck to the shell. I enjoyed my margarita and the peking duck was delicious! The fruit plate was ok, most of the fruit was sour. Hoping for a different experience with the quality in food next time. read more

It always an amazing experience here. But this time is phenomenal experience. A huge part of that was our server, Kelley. From the moment we sat down, Kelley made us feel so welcomed and taken care of. She was incredibly attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, she knows exactly what cuts we are looking for and always checking in at the perfect moments without being overwhelming. The service truly elevated the entire dining experience. We went here at least three or four times already, but this is the first time someone came to our table and cook for us. If you're dining at Niku X, I really hope you get Kelley as your server, she's absolutely amazing. We'll definitely be coming back again and again. read more

Elevated buffet experience. Place is classy and they have a wide array of meats to choose from. The marbling on the wagyu is fantastic. The australian wagyu in particular stood out to me. They have a sliding door that you can open to pick your cut of meat, which I thought was a nice touch. The seafood was solid, but not mind blowing. I liked the selection of fresh veggies and seaweed salad to help offset the fattiness from the great meats. The yuzu cheesecake was insane, sleeper pick for sure. They also have a cool selection of side dishes to choose from like the wagyu sando and yakiniku. Service is inconsistent though. First time here had an issue with requesting grill changes and every time we received a grill change, the new one would also be dirty and black. We brought it to our server's attention, but they seemed to shrug it off and still bring out a dirty grill. It became frustrating, but still decided to give it a second shot. Second time here it wasn't an issue. Overall, pretty sweet ayce experience. Will definitely cost you a pretty penny, but I'd rec trying it at least once. That being said, this isn't a biweekly ayce kbbq with the boys type of spot. It's a treat for sure. Not sure how it stacks up to the other Chubby restaurants, I gotta try those. read more

I've been to a few other Chubby Cattle concepts and comparatively, Niku X is my least favorite due to the experience and price. It's basically a highly upscaled Vegas buffet with the option to grill your own yakiniku (Japanese-style barbecue meat). First of all, it's confusing to dine here. Having eaten here, I still don't understand their different menu types or what they fully offer between weekdays and weekends. Even physically, you need to drive to the InterContinental hotel, receive valet parking (website states you can either valet or self-park, but we were told it's valet only), and request validation ($16.50 total for the first 2.5 hours); good luck if you're trying to find parking elsewhere as it's DTLA's financial district. After giving your car away, you walk in to the lobby with a lack of signage and shuffle to the right, where there's escalators to Niku X on the 2nd floor. Reservations are highly recommended. We did the $125/$109 for members menu, which includes a couple wagyu options and other sides that must be ordered through your server. You also have full rein of the self-serve buffet line. When we were seated, our server suggested some menu highlights, had someone else come over and cook for us a bit, and then pretty much left for the rest of our time there. At least they told us they had a secret seasoning within the black jar in front of us, which was indeed delicious (tasted like some type of "everything" seasoning but for meats)! Good * Tables and space are comfortable, clean, and spacious, and if you get to sit next to a window, there's a neat view. * Wagyu beef and skewers were good, as well as their "secret seasoning". * Very convenient to grab your own raw meat and skewers to cook. * Samplers of the buffet line were neat and decent, such as the mini lobster roll (very creamy), carpaccio, ceviche, and nigiri. * Steamed lobster tails were obviously overcooked, but not to a great extent and at least unlimited and good with the clarified butter. * From the cooked to order menu, the best items were: miso Chilean seabass wrap, wagyu tallow shishito pepper, and potato pave - you can skip the rest. * Server was efficient with following up point redemption on membership. Bad * Lack of service for price you're paying. We came when only 10-20% of the restaurant was filled, so there shouldn't have been an excuse for this. * Very hard to get your money's worth due to quantity gating - the most expensive proteins are ordered via waiter, and the amount per serving is one slice or one piece of it. * The steamed seafood was overcooked and did not taste fresh, thus we just grabbed our first set of king crab and snow crab legs and never came back for them; the calamari and abalone were also rubbery. * Majority of hot dishes and food cooked to order were value traps. * From the cooked to order menu, the absolute worst items were: duck bone soup (most soups were salty with just a piece of their overcooked crab legs), Niku salad, miso eel, and broccoli tempura. * The Australian wagyu pure bred wagyu tenderloin that was limited to one order per person just tasted like basic meat. * We did not eat dessert because we were never informed that was an option. Apparently I was "the first person to order every signature dish on the menu" for science, so you're welcome (thank god they did not give me the fries). If I wanted to maximize the value, I would only eat the wagyu, lobster, crab, and carpaccio. That being said, the price reflects the fancy selection you get, and I have no doubt that I would have had a better and cheaper meal ordering my own a la carte wagyu or lobster dish elsewhere, or going to a place that only did AYCE bbq. The fact that Niku X does both buffet and yakiniku is a novelty, but also heightens the price while splitting your stomach space strategy. Overall, I'd say Niku X was worth a try, especially if you are a Chubby Cattle member and perhaps have a reward offer. Unfortunately, I've paid less at their other concepts and received better service and food. We had to be aggressive about water, and didn't understand what was included in our meal, which led to us not having any dessert. It looks like they pay more attention to you if you come in a big group/party. They say you get additional treats for birthdays and anniversaries, so I'd suggest reserving your time here for a special occasion. However, my party was in fact celebrating something, and even the employees mentioned it, but we didn't get any special treatment other than the well wishes. I typically enjoy Chubby Cattle restaurants, but this one will be hard justifying coming back, especially in LA where there's tons of other AYCE options. read more
