The homemade chips are awesome, favored with a hint of lime. The salsa was good. The Mezcalito app. was ok, although french fries and chicken wings are certainly not traditional Mexican dishes . I ordered the shrimp chimichangas. It was barely fried and the shrimp was not seasoned. i recommend alcoholic beverages be serviced in glasses, not plastic. Also, telling patrons they can only stay for two houts, is obnoxious. One star for the chips. read more

I love this restaurant! They are usually crowded, but if you go early you won't have too much of a wait. Also the wait usually goes quickly as they have a bar that you can easily enjoy a drink while you wait. They have a small parking area, but plenty of surrounding places you can park without being towed. The food is delicious!! I love their tacos!! So many different combinations! Also their wings are divine!! The drink menu is beyond impressive!! My favorite are the shakers!! The highs: Service and location. Our server was great. She made some really insightful comments about the menu, kept our drinks topped off without being asked, and checked in on us just enough. The building had lots of fresh air flowing and the outdoor seating was covered as well as having fans strategically placed to keep us comfortable during a muggy NC summer day. The lows: Sadly, the food just didn't live up to the service and location. My companion's fajitas were served on top of a huge mound of warm, greasy peppers and onions that ended up detracting from the dish. The carnitas seemed like it had been cooked earlier then warmed up to order. The carne asada portion of the fajitas was very good. Similarly, the birria in my quesadillas seemed like it had been cooked earlier, then just reheated to order. My quesadillas didn't seem to have any cheese to the bind the birria to the tortilla, so they were difficult to eat. The accompanying consume would have been very nice, but it had too much meat in it which didn't leave enough liquid for dipping. The final tally: My overall experience with Mezcalito warrants a 3-star rating. While I thought the prices were appropriate for the location and service, the prices were somewhat high for the quality of the food. Mezcalito could probably offer a smaller menu and serve a smaller portion of higher-quality ingredients with a focus on preparation at the same price point to up its game. read more

Mezcalito is fine. It's not fantastic Mexican food, there are better Mexican restaurants in Clayton. It is hit or miss but the portions are very large. The only thing good here really is the margaritas. The service is also hit or miss, just okay. I've never had amazing service or experience here. The one thing I will say is it is LOUD. It seems to get louder every time we come. The inside is always clean and vibrant and beautiful decor. But the music will just ruin the vibe with how loud it is. Especially if you have sensory issues. You can hardly hear your wait staff or people at your table. read more

Upon arrival we were greeted and we're told there would be a 45 minute wait. It was Saturday afternoon and was pretty busy. There wasn't much waiting room inside but they had some heaters for outside waiting. Right before they sat us the restaurant got swamped. The restaurant was packed but beautiful. It was so loud in there I could barely communicate with my husband. Our sever was kind but new so she didn't know the menu well. We ordered the carnitas meal and carne asada/ alambre. This is a new business in Clayton and when we visited they were very busy! We arrived at 5pm on Friday, the inside was full, but they had available seating outside so we were able to get a table quickly. By the time we left, there were groups of people waiting to be seated, all around. We got our drinks quick and the server let us order the kids food right away. I was disappointed to see 2 tiny chicken tenders and fries for the first kids meal, the other had 2 small chicken tenders and an ear of corn(elote). My husband and I ordered the meat platter which had, fish, shrimp, sausage, pork, cactus, green onion, corn and 2 sides of beans, rice and fajitas. The salsa they serve with the chips is delicious and has great flavor. My friend ordered a tequila sunrise and said the taste was off and only drank 10% of it and left because she didn't like it. I tasted it and felt the same. My husband ordered 2 pacifico beers and said those were good. Overall, the decor is cool and our main entree was good, I just dont think the kids meals are worth the $6/7 and maybe well just stick with beer when we visit. read more

I guve up on this restaurant. I have tried to give them the benefit of making things right but they never answer their phone if you want to place an order for pick up. If by some fluke chance you dp get through the order is never correct. Even when I go over the issues I have had with every previous take out they still make the same mistakes. Save yiur money and go to LA Cocina. That is what I do now. Their food is fresher, they give you more meat and they always answer the phone. read more

The food was great, can't say anything bad about that. But the service needs work, we didn't have to wait long which was nice but our waitress wasn't as attentive as any other restaurant I've been to. We were there for about 1.5-2 hrs and the waitress only checked up on my table at most 3 times. The food service was pretty slow and I've had to ask other team members for utensils cause we were never given any when we were sat down. I even had to go to the bar and ask for napkins cause the waitress was nowhere to be found to ask for some. The restaurant is gorgeous and overall a great environment. But getting filled up with mostly chips and salsa wasn't my plan. I'll try giving this place a second chance in the near future but this wasn't a good first impression. read more

I agree with the previous reviews wholeheartedly. However, our server was nice and attentive. We were informed the other day about this New Mexican restaurant in Clayton and forewarned that the wait is super long. Turns out our wait wasn't but 10 minutes. The sweet gal working the station was adorably making sure people were sat as expediently as possible. Went to the bar where a lone tender was working his butt off and ordered a Margarita and a frozen Pina Colada. Alas, no frozen cocktails.... yet.... I say that because due to demands, I'm sure they'll be available shortly. Now, our friend arrived first and asked for an outdoor table. Our friend explained that we would want to eat outside bc the music inside would be too loud for a dinner conversation. He was right... music could be turned down a bit. The bar was swarmed with fly's. Most likely due to the open bay door... which did get closed at 6:30. Thus, everyone was swatting flys away from their dinner. This is a brand new restaurant and I'm sure they will be successful. Just got to get through growing pains. I just hope their initial popularity doesn't wain their growth and much needed improvements that are super easy to achieve. So it's difficult to get an indoor table. If you want to dit an visit, this is not your place. Limited to a 2 hour sitting per visit. Even though it was cold, the use of heat lamps saved the night!! The lighting & the overall atmosphere of the place is always exhilarating & uplifting. The food is great, but the staff are awful. Not sure why, but in about 8 visits, I've never had one staff interaction that was enjoyable. I was talking to a friend about it, and he said "yeah, those bartenders (where I've sat when dining alone) are _____." (insert profanity of your choice). I'd expect to find this sort of arrogance as an American in Paris, not at a Mexican restaurant in Clayton. Best Paloma cocktail I've ever had! Such a fun atmosphere and good food. It is more expensive than your typical Mexican restaurant in the area, but it's not your typical Tex-Mex restaurant either. The extra cost is absolutely worth it for the ambiance, food taste, portions, and the cocktails. Our 2.5 year old liked the food and music too. After dinner he danced on the patio. Great for families, couples, and a girls afternoon/evening. So glad we found this place based on a recommendation from our neighbor. read more

We have visited this place twice and the difference between the two visits is worth mentioning. The 1st time in January 2025 we were invited by our neighbors, and were pleased with the food, service, and atmosphere. At that time we ordered from the lunch menu. The 2nd time we went there it was a different experience. The food was very good and we again ordered from the lunch menu, and were very specific in what we wanted. When the bill was given to us, the prices reflected the dinner menu prices, and I pointed this out to the waiter. He insisted that we ordered the dinner menu portions which was incorrect. The overall difference in price for both of us was less than ten dollars, and rather than turning a pleasant dining experience into something less, I paid the bill. I'm not sure if the waiter didn't understand if he was new, or if it was a bait and switch tactic. Here is my advice for anyone visiting during lunch time and ordering from the lunch menu; be sure the waiter understands you are ordering from the lunch menu and not from the dinner menu, and point to the menu exactly what you are ordering. read more

My Fiance and I went there on New Years Eve. The food was fine, but when we were finished eating, the server brought two plates to our table and we said, they weren't ours, we were finished eating. Happens right? Thought he just went to the wrong table. When the bill came, I thought it was a bit high, but we had ordered a couple of drinks, so I paid and tipped. When I got home, I saw that they had actually put those two additional entrees on our bill. We tried calling but got no answer, we then emailed them and never heard a response, so they billed us for food we did not order and did not eat. BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE. We would have been satisfied with a gift card because had they been responsive, we would be going back. As it is, we will never go there again and would recommend others be very wary of this business. read more

My dish was so good it had me dancing! I got the Alambra ACP--what a delightful combination of flavors! The rice could stand on its own, the chicken beautifully flavored, and the portions were outstanding. You might think that the tortillas they give you to go with it are overkill--ignore that thought. Go ahead and slap some of that tasty mixture on one and your mouth will thank you. Let's not forget the tortillas chips...a hint of lime made then the tastiest that I've had! I called back the next morning to inform them and ask for a refund and received horrible customer service from the manager Rubin who told me I need to go to the doctor to get a refund! This place has the best guacamole I've had since I had what I thought decades ago was the best guacamole I'd ever had in Escondido, California. The guacamole appetizer is a hefty portion. Just about everything we've had seems to have sugar in it and since we're on a keto diet it's verboten, although it's been tasty. OTOH the fajitas weren't sweet and were tasty and tender.
