There are not enough stars that can adequately express how much we love this fabulous place. It is a home away from home for us all. My family is from italy and we know good Italian home cooked food. Here it not only tastes like home, but feels like it too. Everyone is greeted like family and the service it phenomenal. Santiago is always quick to refill your water with a smile and Angelo makes sure to remember your favorite dish and how you want them prepared. (Did I mention we are really particular with our food- truly a server's nightmare) Eddie the owner has become my kids' beloved uncle and when they started dating , they were sure to bring their dates to mezza luna to introduce them to the gang. Now that they have all moved far away- the first stop on their way home is ti 'mezza'! Last month, my daughter and her husband flew home from Texas for their baby shower. Of course we knew where we needed to host this event. Eddie worked with us and created a beautiful luncheon for 60 people- I don't know how they managed to feed us all at once but they did. From the eggplant parmigiana to the rice balls and calamari the apps filled everyone's plates- the selection of meals perfect and the food itself , delicious; the tables and their orientation facilitated a laid back social atmosphere where we were afforded time and space to catch up with many people for the first time since covid. It was a beautiful afternoon- and couldn't have asked for more. We feel grateful to have this wonderful gem of a business and mezza luna's staff part of our community . Amazing restaurant!! I planned my sister's bridal shower here, it took place yesterday and was such a perfect day. My husband and I enjoyed a delicious lunch today at Mezza Luna. The staff were attentive and we felt very comfortable with the social distancing between tables. While we looked over the menu, we were served warm bread and some delicious rice balls in a vodka sauce. Our two appetizers, fried calamari and eggplant rollatini, were both very good. We were also served an incredible pasta fagioli soup, as well as a salad. My husband chose Pasta Carbonara for his entree and said it was amazing. I chose the Pappardelle Salscice - fresh pasta in a chunky red sauce with sausage. I had to bring most of it home, because I overdid it with the other courses! We went to Mezzaluna last night. Their updated decor was a pleasant surprise. The staff was friendly as well. All of the food we had was of great quality: fresh, tasty, and hot. But there wasn't enough of it which is why I only give it 3 stars. I don't recall the calamari appetizer being served in a dish the size of a soup bowl when we would go prior to the fire. My veal parm dinner was also very good but the portion was small. I should not leave a BYOB Italian restaurant in North Jersey still hungry. read more

I've visited Mezzaluna seven times since my last review. There has been a noticeable deterioration of quality and originality during this time. I get a sense that they are trying to cut corners by oversaucing and overcheesing many of the dishes. Portions are much smaller, and the more expensive ingredients are sparse. For example, a pasta that listed prosciutto as an ingredient arrived with barely any to be found. Plenty of cheese, plenty of sauce, but other ingredients were seriously scarce. The creative dishes that I once enjoyed here are now hard to find. What were once, tasty, original dishes that utilized a nice combination of ingredients, has now turned into very basic Italian cuisine. Again, if you want lots of cheese or lots of sauce, you'll be happy. I also notice how the pasta dishes are now mostly all large, thick pastas, such as pappardelle or rigatoni. There is hardly an angel-hair or linguine to be found. This type of pasta allows the serving of what looks to be big, piled high dishes. In reality, it's just another example of corner cutting. I'd prefer if they served their pasta dishes with more traditional pastas, and still piled it high, and sauced it accordingly. Service is fair, where the job gets done, but you do not feel like a welcome guest. I note many of the servers giving off an annoyed or distracted attitude while interacting with diners. Mezzaluna has many fans, of which I was one of their biggest. However complacency and noticeable cost-cutting seems to have taken over. In my book, Mezzaluna is no longer on my list of regular places to dine. By the way Rebecca S: the waiters are Albanian, not Italian :-) read more

I am a big fan of the penne with vodka sauce. It is one of my favorite vodka sauce dishes and I have tried a lot of vodka sauces. It's hard for me to order anything else when I come here since I know that dish will be delicious. The appetizers are also quite tasty. The clams in white wine garlic sauce is a favorite. My husband usually orders the chicken parm. He enjoys it, but it isn't his all time favorite. I think the ambience is nice and perfect for a quick lunch or a more relaxed dinner. read more

Lovely little restaurant. I came here with a group of extended family after my daughter's recital and we had a lovely, celebratory meal. We typically avoid Italian restaurants, being Italian, because so often the food is not authentic. Everything we had here was delicious from appetizers to dessert. The service was attentive and warm and the holiday decor made it festive was cozy. I recommend a reservation - there was no one there when we arrived at 5 pm on a Sunday but it quickly filled up. Randomly picked this place for dinner because I was in Allendale and my food finder app found it for me. I went to the original location first, then realized they were across the street. Ambiance: Felt like I was back in 1970. Ugly chairs. Just a big dining room. Not very romantic. More of a family type place. Service: Extremely slow. Had my menus closed for 10 minutes before our order was taken. Took a long time to get our food. We ordered 1 appetizer, 1 salad and 1 entree. Everything took a very long time. Food: Appetizer was stuffed mushrooms. They came out after 20 minutes and they were cold. Had to send back to be heated up. Taste was good though. Salad was OK. For dinner we had shrimp, but it really wasn't anything great. It was just OK. Overall, I would never plan a night out for this place. I would not go to this place for a date. The price was reasonable...BYOB will do that for you. Seems like an OK place to go with your family, but not if you expect to get out of there in less than 90 minutes. read more

I happened to stumble across Mezza Luna not too long ago, it's a very cozy restaurant with an inviting atmosphere. I'll start off by saying it is BYOB so if you weren't aware make sure you bring a bottle of your favorite wine to pair with your meal. Everything we ordered off the menu for appetizers were delicious. For dinner I ordered the almond crusted sea bass which happened to be a special on the menu that night, the fish was very fresh and was cooked to perfection. I highly recommend if you are looking for a new place to check out with a great atmosphere, amazing staff, and some of the best Italian food North Jersey has to offer. read more

I love the energy of this restaurant. Everyone that works there from the chef's to the servers to the bus boys are all related in some way whether brothers or cousins and you can tell by the way that they interact with each other that they enjoy bringing happiness to their clientele. My family has been visiting "Eddie's" (the owner) for longer than I can remember starting when he had a restaurant on Glen Rock's main strip before moving to Fair Lawn and ultimately moving to Allendale. My dad is a rotund Italian man that grew up in a first generation Italian-American home and only frequents a handful of Italian restaurants in the area. Though the owner and staff of the restaurant are of Armenian descent, they make a mean Italian cuisine. We have spent many a family holiday at Mezza Luna and even now that my parents aren't together anymore, still find myself visiting the restaurant for many dinners out because deciding who would win custody of the restaurant was one thing that my parents could not settle in the divorce decree (I kid). My mom's and my fallback meal is always the veal milanese, it's never overcooked and never too drenched in dressing with the right amount of arugula and not overpowered with onion...yum! More often than not though we'll order one of the specials for the evening. On our most recent visit my mom ordered the chicken Mezza Luna, a huge piece of chicken breast stuffed with spinach, mozzarella, and shrimp...great size for the price. I ordered the almond crusted tilapia over risotto....there was just the right crunch without overcooking the fish and the risotto was so creamy, divine! The restaurant is always packed, a testament to it's consistently delicious food and excellent price. Tthe fact that it's a byo with a liquor store conveniently located just feet away on Allendale Ave is a major plus. I can't imagine that returning customer's come back because of the decor because truly it is quite dated and downright tacky with it's twinkling icicle lights in the window. A few modifications could be made to the parking situation as the only place to park aside from Allendale Ave., which has limited parking, is the parking lot around back by the train tracks. The awkward location with it's awkward parking and unusual entrance situation, if given the proper attention really could boost the appeal of this restaurant as it has tons of potential to match accessibility and decor to their quality and varied menu. read more

This was my family's pick for Easter this year. Sigh. I should know better than to let them make a decision on restaurants without me. And without me I mean without "Yelp." Before I even talk about the food let me just tell you that this is possibly the ugliest and strangest location for a restaurant I've ever seen. We had to park in a lot behind the building (which looks abandoned, FYI) and then trek through gravel and broken glass to get to the "front" door. Which looks like a side door. Nay, a BACK door. The only thing saving the outside of this place is the appealing outdoor seating area. And I use the term saving extremely loosely. It's not really saving it at all. Because let's be real here...I'm not coming back to this place anytime soon. I was lucky enough to taste a little bit of everything while I was here since my family is Italian and insists on ordering WAY too much food and then forces it upon each other. I tasted antipasto, fried calamari, shrimp scampi, stuffed rigatoni with shrimp and scallops, cannoli, tiramisu, different salads, the bread and probably more. Nothing, except the sauce on the rigatoni, was anything to write home about. Let's talk about something else for a second, shall we? I'm all about going out to dinner. I love it. Live for it. I try all kinds of places and eat all kinds of foods and Yelp all kinds of things. I can appreciate really, really delicious food in a not so fabulous setting; I can even appreciate not so delicious food in a really, really fabulous setting. They have to balance each other. Mainly it's about the way the food tastes and how good the service is, but it's ALSO about the the ambiance. The atmosphere. The candlelight. You get the idea. This little place is just OK all around. The decor is dark, dated and quite frankly, a little ugly. It is loud. The service is quick, but unfriendly. And the food? Just ok. We were invited to attend a party here recently. There are 2 locations they have in Allendale. The main place on the street and then another location I would consider a hall format. They did have a DJ outside on the patio when we first walked in with about a dozen tables. The tables and chairs remind us of cheap rental furniture. It was very loud and open room with spaced out settings. The service was very good. They really were attentive to everyone and they really tried hard to please. We were here for a party and found out that it was a BYOB. A quick jump to the liquor store solved our problem. First courses were brought out family style. Seafood salads, calamari, eggplant, cheeses and meats. All good but nothing that would tell you it was just prepared, no real flavor or spices were present. Second course was a simple pasta and sauce dish. Again, fine but temperature of the pasta was not uniform. Some cold spots! Main course I had the steak that came smothered with a pepper corn sauce. Way too much sauce and a poor quality piece of steak. I watched 3 people send theirs back. 2 asked for the sauce to be removed and one had asked to have the steak cooked a little more. The staff was very helpful and apologetic to use. My wife had the salmon that was not fresh and overcooked. She picked around it and the staff again could tell something was wrong and asked her if they could bring her something else. I will try the main restaurant next time to see if it is better. Stay away from the "hall" side of this operation, not worth eating there. read more

I had the Veal Marsala and was impressed with both the portion and flavor, I would most definitely order again. Strong finish with the Double Espresso. The girls all had desserts and loved them. We went to Mezzaluna as a group of six last Saturday and were seated promptly at our reservation time. The staff is adept is serving wine, which patrons must bring on their own. For the most part they are attentive and cordial. The complimentary bruchetta is a nice, welcoming touch, and it doesn't disappoint. The menu is extensive and there are plenty of specials each night. It's hard to follow all the choices, as there is no specials board, so they are given verbally. They read through each choice quickly so it is hard to keep track of all of them. I like that fact that there is not a TV anywhere to be found, keeping away from a trend which I find annoying. The atmosphere is casual. Entrees are reasonably priced and portions are generous. I had the shrimp and sea scallops over the black ink pasta and broccoli-rabe. The fish was cooked just right and was sweet and succulent. The rest of my group were all happy with their dinners as well. Most had to take their large remaining leftover portions home with them. Right after dinner came a complimentary serving of fruit. Even though we are used to it this is still a pleasant gesture. Cap all that good food off with coffee, espresso or cappuccino, and you have had a nice leisurely evening meal out. We called a week in advance to make a 7:30 p.m. reservation and upon arrival were told we would be seated in a few minutes. Fifty minutes later we were finally seated. we were not alone as another group were waiting over an hour after being told their wait would be 15 minutes. Service was OK, but the food wes nothing special. Several other patrons were also complaining about the food being no better than the local pizza place. to top everything off, we asked for a meat sauce on the small side dish of pasta and were told the meat sauce additional cost would be $5.95 each. I am torn about writing this review. To me, service is a part of the review. Even if the food is good, customers maybe turned off on how they are treated. So let me begin. We had made reservations for a table of four(2adults, 2 senior citizens). They didn't ask for our name and then tried to seat us at a small table that had only three chairs. Right next to the table they planned on putting us was a normal dinner size table for four that I had to ask to be seated at. We were there for a full dinner, appetizers, salad, dinner, coffee and dessert. This place is BYOB. So We brought cold white wine for dinner. They did not offer to bring an ice bucket. They just left the bottle on the table. I had to request an ice bucket. When they brought out our dinners, I asked if they could clear the appetizers since they were empty and took up room on the table. It was difficult for them to place the dinner plates on the table. Instead the server snapped and said hold on. After dinner they were pushing us if we needed the check. We were still wanting to order coffee and dessert. My food was good but the staff made the meal not enjoyable. While we were eating, they kept coming over to clear the table. Putting silverware with food to my mouth clearly means I'm still eating. I feel sorry to all residents of Allendale, for being stuck with this place for 'fine' Italian meals. There is nothing wrong with the service, but the food is overpriced and unauthentic. It's unfortunate that Pastafino shut down several years ago, because that spot became a family tradition for us on special occasions. Pastafino served up authentic Italian cuisine in a bustling restaurant. The only reason people still frequent Mezza Luna is that the options for a sit down restaurant serving Italian food in Allendale are limited. I highly recommend eating elsewhere, like in Ridgewood or grabbing a handmade award winning pie from Angelo's. There is nothing proprietary about Mezza Luna, all dishes could be easily made at home and turn out much better. Don't make the mistake of eating here. read more

Went here this week for a work dinner with a prefixed menu. They started us off with a bunch of apps including fried calamari(light and not greasy), bruschetta, rice balls(not sure if these were homemade,Kinda got a frozen taste), antipasto(cheese and meats, very good). We then were given a house salad which was overloaded with red onions but had a very tasty dressing. For the main course I went with the chicken parm since we were only given a couple options. They gave one decent size piece of chicken with some veggies and a piece of potato. Chicken was cooked perfectly with just enough sauce and cheese. Skipped the veggies and potato since I was full from all the other food. Waiter was very attentive to our larger party. I dined here this past weekend with my husband and parents. We had a wondeful meal. The place was very crowded and even though we had a reservation we had to wait 20 minutes for a table. They made up for it by being very quick to bring out our starters. We had the Almond Crusted Sea Bass Dinner Special, the Parpadelle with Shrimp and a Lobster Tail in a vodka sauce with crab meat in it and the ouso bucco. Everything was very good with nice large portions except the Ouso Bucco. It tasted wonderful but was a small portion. It is BYO and that made it very reasonable. I walked in and asked about gluten free options and they were immediately helpful and knowledgeable. So my friends and I decided to give it a try. As mentioned...it is a BYOB type of place, but there is a liquor store across the street with a great wine selection. They sat us even though put entire group wasn't there...and didn't rush us. The food was phenomenal! I had to eat Gluten Free and it was one of the best gluten free meals I've ever had at a restaurant.
