Decided to try a new dinner spot for my wife and I. Kids were out of town so we wanted something different. This was a great choice. I felt like I was back in little Italy in the Bronx. I had chicken palm with side of pasta - it was very old school and served nice and hot. My wife had a filet mignonette done exactly as she asked. The service was attentive and very responsive. My wife and I arrived at Mezza Luna this afternoon anticipating a nice lunch and enjoy the weather outside. We were greeted with "TWO?' Really?! I get that at the diner! The waiter said sit here... right next to the door. I wanted to sit in the shade , he said:" the beauty parlor is open, we can't use those tables." Strike 2. We sat ourselves. The waiter brought water and menus. We wanted to order cocktails. Not possible. He pointed across the street to the liquor store. SERIOUSLY. Strike 3. Two mini arancini were served. They were tasty. The bread was at least a day old, if not two. I know bread. This was old. The arrogant and dismissive attitude of the waiter was palpable. Very off-putting. My wife ordered Chicken Francese and asked for pasta with tomato sauce. Waited said: "it comes with spinach and rice". Wow. What's the big deal? Give the customer some spaghetti and sauce. I had the Veal Sorrentino. They served me two small strips of veal 1.5" x 2" over rice. We never complained. We never had a follow up visit to see if our meals were satisfactory or we needed anything. Completely annoyed with the fact that he had to wait tables for a living. Finally, placed the check on the table without a word. No "Thank You", no " Take You Time". Nothing. We wont be back. Theres plenty of restaurants in Bergen that we can sped our money in. Don't waste your time driving to Allendale for a bad attitude and mediocre food. read more

I used to give this place a 5 star now if i could give a 0 i would. Food has gone down hill .very salty, shrimp cocktail was warm and mushy the steak gorgonzola was so salty and disgusting. Im so disappointed with with restaurant because it used to be my favorite. Not sure if they changed chef's or what went wrong. I even went to a private party in December there and i had veal marsala which had no flavor at all. I would like to try it again but i don't want to waste my money!! read more

I'm shocked to see that Mezzaluna only has 3 stars! I work at an Italian restaurant with a comparable menu and Mezzaluna is way nicer in many ways (don't tell my boss). First off, the ambiance is great. Definitely a place you can dress up for, but not too fancy that it'd make you feel out of place if you wore a t-shirt. Plus, they have actual cloth napkins and tablecloths so that's a start. Next off, their food is always great. The complimentary bruchetta is literally best I've ever had, and it's free! For dinner I usually opt for their homemade pastas, sans prosciutto of course. I went with my family this thanksgiving and ordered the rigatoni zingara. The rigatoni was perfectly al dente, and you can tell some real Italian love went into the plum tomato sauce. The Gaeta olives were a great addition, and the cherry peppers gave it the perfect amount of heat. Nom! For $15 it comes with an appetizer house salad to start. Can't beat it! The service is always good, their workers are very professional. Plus, they're all actually Italian, so that gives the place an even more authentic feel. No bar, but its BYOB and there's a liquor store right across the street. If no street parking is available, there's a free lot in the back. Seriously? This place is underrated. Tasty AND authentic Italian food, upscale ambience and good serivce? That deserves 5 stars in my book. Don't be put off by Mezzaluna's overall rating, take a visit to pretty little Allendale and try it out. read more

Not good Italian food. I got the veal with artichokes. Normally this dish contains veal cutlets sautéed in a white wine sauce with artichoke hearts. At Mezza Luna the veal was swimming in some sort of broth with mash potatoes, spinach, onions, carrots and peppers, with one half stemmed baby artichoke heart. The veal itself seemed to have been cooked separately and laid on top of everything -- it had no taste. My wife had the linguini with white clam sauce. There was a good amount, and plenty of clams. However, the clams were extremely salty, and the linguini had no salt at all. read more

My brother has been going here for at least 15 years maybe more and they own not only this bistro but across the street a steak restaurant. Both are fantastic. I've been here several times and there isn't I repeat ISNT a bad thing to say. Staff fantastic. The owner and father still pitches in cleaning tables and sitting and yes..stopping by to see if u enjoyed. As does his son. The clams in garlic wine white over pasta fantastic. My sister n brother had beef osso bucco, the meat melted in your mouth, and risotto. We had 3 appetizers calamari,firecracker shrimp and roasted peppers, mozzarella. It's a BYOB they serve soft drinks. It was so much we had to doggie bag. I recommend it highly..and a fair price for what ur getting. In and out door dinning. read more

I come to Mezza Luna every few months as it's so close to me. We like it when we just want a nice dinner out but don't need a fancy place. The decor is very plain and the ambiance is upbeat but I wouldn't consider it swanky or hip. Its's a bring your own restaurant, but a well stocked liquor store is located right across the street. The food is consistently good. I've eaten pasta, fish, veal and chicken dishes. Every table gets a plate of crostini with bruschetta and if it's not New Year's Eve you get a fried meatball made with rice (very tasty). I came here on New Year's Eve 2011 and 2013. We couldn't get a reservation in 2012 (called too late). I thought that this year, the tables was too close together and the menu didn't have good choices. I understand that the kitchen is very busy on NYE but I would have liked a few more entree choices. I got a feeling of being rushed at the end of the meal and felt trapped by the chairs at the table behind me. Think of sardines. Anyway, I will have to choose a fancier place next New Year's Eve or maybe just have my own party. I'll still go back to Mezza Luna but not on a holiday. It's been around for years and has a loyal customer base. read more

Now that we are fully vaccinated, we are venturing out to eat indoors again. We selected Mezzaluna having dined there for a repast in February, and were quite impressed with the food. We were warmly greeted and given a table. In addition to the bread a small appetizer was presented to us. We then ordered fried calamari to share. I had the bronzini special while my husband chose the gnocchi ragu. They were both delicious, the portions large, and even took home leftovers. Service was gracious and attentive. Atmosphere was perfect for a quiet Monday night dinner and the staff was friendly, professional, and attentive. A cute table for two and BYOB, not a whole lot better. While we looked over the menu, we were served bruschetta which was fresh and delicious as well as rice balls that totally hit the spot. Crunchy, tasty, and not overly seasoned, it was a great way to start the meal. After we ordered our entrées, we were greeted quickly with a salad. I ordered the tortellini dish with peas, mushrooms, and prosciutto. Wonderful and left me ready for bed, but there was somehow room for dessert. Cheesecake! Duh. Would definitely come back. My children gave me a birthday party at Mezza Luna. It couldn't have run any smoother than it did. It was very good, the almonds were roasted and added a nice crunch to the fish, the fish sat on top of a bed of risotto, the whole dish was excellent. The vegetables were sautéed and delicious. We are so excited to welcome back Mezzaluna. Due to a fire in December it had been closed. In June it reopened its doors full of gusto. The ambiance is animated and the food is better than ever! The short rib parpadelle should be on the regular menu , it's worth the calories! Every dish is fresh and delicious. At our table everyone was raving about their food.
