Really impressed with the hand cut meat for sandwiches. Its basically a working class diner with amazing sandwiches.

Its too bad MGM Roast Beef doesn't serve any humble pie, 'cause I was needing a slice or two after coming here. Before trekking out to VA last weekend, my husband said he had a "great breakfast place" to take me to. I was excited - until we turned and I saw the giant bull on the building. "We're going HERE?! WHAT?" was my all-too-judgmental-response. "I read awesome reviews AND saw this featured on TV!" he quickly replied. As he parked the car in the not-really-a-parking-lot area, I couldn't shake my doubts - after all, this was the place we liked to poke fun at when going to Home Depot. That is, until I stepped inside. At 9 am, MGM was packed with people representing every demographic in DC. A young family having breakfast, a dude at the corner ordering roast beef sandwiches, a techie nerd chowing down on a ginormous waffle while reading the paper, and older couple seated towards the back sipping coffee...and the plates in front of them? Overflowing with breakfasty goodness that they all seemed to be clearly enjoying. It is clean, well lit, staffed with friendly folk, and - if you have lingering doubts as to its quality, just check the wall for the many framed accolades from a variety of local publications. Apparently this place was opened by the guys who run the auto auction next door. The rationale? There is simply no good place to eat in this area. So now, this has become a staple in the neighborhood catering not just to the auto auction workers and patrons, but to people from all quadrants of the city. The menu is not extensive, but it has the breakfast basics. Eggs how you want 'em, pancakes, creamed grits, waffles, etc. I had an omelet with onions, green peppers, tomatoes and provolone cheese, and the hubs had the "big sampler" which consisted of pancakes (more like MANcakes), grits, and eggs. The food was satisfying, and indeed, better than I had expected. While the home fries were some of the best I've ever had, I was not 100% thrilled with my omelet - the fillings were sparse, and the outer layer of the omelet was way too rubbery. And, while not a huge deal, I ordered my toast without butter, and alas, it came fully buttered (hey, I had to keep my cholesterol intake in check somewhere in the meal!). My husband was really pleased with his order - the pancakes were huge and fluffy and sweet, the creamed grits merited his rave reviews, and oh, he liked the coffee too. So yes, this is indeed a solid choice for a no-frills, filling, feel good breakfast. MGM, take my humble apologies for shooting you to the curb before trying you. You proved to me that no, you are not a 1-star place, even with that menacing looking bull on your exterior. I hope to come back again (seriously) and try the main attraction here - roast beef sandwiches - and have me prove your worth once again. read more

I don't think I can say enough about how great this food is. I love a sandwich and this is on the top on my list. If you don't eat a lot, share or know that you will have left overs. The portions were large but worth it! I'm drooling just thinking about the next time I'll be back . read more

I haven't visited in months and now they are expanding to accommodate the customers. This is one of my favorite places to visit for lunch while working in the city. So many different people visit to where there's a line out the door during lunch. I had the turkey sub and sweet tea which was really good. They have salads that look like the size you would get at the Cheesecake Factory. This will be my next item that I will try on my next visit. The staff always talks to you and remembers what yo like off one visit. If you plan on staying at the counter to eat you best come early. Until they finish the expansion you will be standing in line for a seat. I haven't been for breakfast in months and plan on visiting soon to have flash backs of early morning breakfast @ MGM. This place is worth a visit for a salad and/or sandwich while visiting DC or stopping at the post office. read more

My first experience with MGM was truly unforgettable. I'm new to the area and thus naive to the reputation this place carries. My brother and I wandered into this place a couple weeks ago, unaware that they had been closed for several months (due to a fire). Despite still technically being closed, we were welcomed in and given free sandwhiches! Not to mention the absolute ruckus I caused when I returned to a long-deprived office of MGM fanatics at DC Fray. Shoutout MGM for making my first experience oh so exciting. read more

Just got back from my first time eating here. I am totally blissed out. I ordered the Thanksgiving Dinner sandwich. The turkey was so very tender and flavorful and absolutely perfect. It was open face style, piled with stuffing & gravy. Cranberry sauce on the side. SO GOOD. I'd go back in a heartbeat. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. read more

The first time you go there, you will be convinced you are headed in the wrong direction and there can't possibly be a great sandwich place there, but TRUST ME, it is worth the 7 minute walk from Rhode Island Ave on the Red Line, or the drive with a bit tricky parking. Totally amazing. Best best best sandwich place in the city! They have an open faced sandwich on the menu called Thanksgiving dinner. And dear lord, if it had sweet potato pie on the side, I would be convinced it was the fourth Thursday of November every time I go there. Everything is fresh and everything is from a real animal. No processed lunch meat garbage here. The dark meat turkey, brisket, and roast beef are like a time warp back to lunch at grandma's house. Real horseradish, fresh bread. I could go on all day. Looking at the breakfast menu, seems a good value and traditional diner flavors. Though haven't had the chance to try it out yet. Look forward to it. I have yet to try anything other than breakfast but breakfast is delicious. I order it every time I'm off and don't feel like cooking. The eggs are magnificent along with the bacon. The waffles, French toast and pancakes are ok but of course since I'm getting them delivered they're always cold and I really care for microwaved food. Today was my first time eating here. 1. Parking was tough. It has it's own lot but it's small and crowded. Across the street there's parking but that's limited as well. 2. When you come in you take a sheet of paper and check off your order then you drop it off next to the carving station. (I only figured that out by asking someone that was in line in front of me). You wait for your name to be called then you pay. There's a sign that says "Order Here" but it's next to a register that looks like a person should be standing there. However, that's where the order papers are located. A lot of people after me were confused as well. Only the regulars knew what to do. 3. It's rather expensive if you ask me. I ordered a specialty sandwich, fries, and a drink. It came to $17 including tax. I didn't get any napkins lol (maybe it was a slight oversight). 4. They serve breakfast as well, but I came during the lunch service. 5. Staff is nice and the place looks clean. There's a diner style table top to sit if you want to stay and eat, but that was crowded. 6. I didn't mind the splurge on the cost because it was my first time here, but I doubt I would come back. Food was good, but I've had better or just as good elsewhere for cheaper. I am glad I gave them a chance. read more

Was in town for the weekend visiting family and in the mood for something new and excellent for lunch. Found it at MGM Roast Beef. Took friend's recommendation and went. We shared a number of excellent sandwiches. Highlights: Brisket was STELLAR! Moist with just a hint of smoke. The Roast Beef, of course, was tremendous. As the restaurant's namesake, it had to be. Juicy and tender. Had tastes of ham (fantastic!) and a turkey Sammie that recreates Thxgiving on two slices of fresh, soft rye bread. Yess! Staff was helpful and friendly. Will definitely make this a regular stop whenever I'm in town. read more

Hands down one of the best sandwiches I've ever had and certainly the best I've had in DC. When you walk in, you're immediately greeted by giant slabs of meat just waiting to be sliced and placed on your sandwich. Everything is super fresh and made to order. The fresh cut French fries are out of this world and the meat is super tender and delicious. This is a no-frills joint perfect for a casual lunch... Just be sure to come hungry! read more

Second time to this gem of the north east side of town. Decided to try breakfast for a change. Everything was superb. Scrambled eggs, home fries, blueberry pancakes, fresh carved ham, was to die for. I love the atmoshere too. Reminds me of the old style diners you find along the way traveling thru small towns through out the country, except that this pave is modern. Staff friendly and attentive to your request. I was so impressed i had to get a beef brisket sandwich to go. If you are ever in this part of DC this is s must stop. read more

Okay, I might be a little biased since this is the only "real" restaurant within walking (safe walking, that is) distance from my house, but they are really, really good. I've had a number of different items from here...carved sandwiches, salad sandwiches, specials, fries....all quite good. It can get really busy, so the waits can be a bit much to go, but the service is always passable, and better for dine-in than to go (hence 4 instead of 5 stars). The only complaint I have is that they're only open until 6 weekdays, 3 Saturdays, so us neighborhood folks can't always take advantage. On those nights when I just don't feel like cooking, this would be a good option if they were only open (again, 4 instead of 5). Hopefully, as things progress, they'll find the market to expand their hours. read more

I have been here twice. Once for lunch once for an early supper at 5:45 right before they closed. These guys are true entrepreneurs. You will be missing out if you dont try the homemade Jewish style brisket on an onion loaf. They have awesome toppings as well. You gotta get the fries, they are as good or better than Five Guys. If you are running to Home Depot or are in this section of town, you might as well stop because it is a gem. Our company had a staff meeting about a week a go. MGM Roast Beef did the catering for it. The sandwiches were delicious and the presentation and promptness of the delivery was exceptional. There is no comparison to the mediocre food you get from Subway or places like that. The meats are juicy and fresh, the rolls are as fresh as if they were baked that minute. You tell them what you want and how many people you are serving, and they know without hesitation the amount of food you need. If I could give them 10 stars I would. read more

Visiting as part of a youth missions trip. They were kind enough to cater our big group of 250 and went overboard with service and taste. Even obtaining cupcakes from Costco using their corporate account when Costco wouldn't hold 250 cupcakes for our group. They even picked it up and transported it AT THEIR COST! I say this to give you and idea of the mindset behind the owners. I was running other errands so on the open invitation I decided to stop by their restaurant and boy howdy am I glad I did! The place is in a tight corner in an intersection of roads. It is a little difficult to find. There is not much parking. The inside has a nice counter feel. You can see the meat behind the glass and oh is it beautiful! The service was amiable and quick. They have a simple system of ordering where they have two menu check sheets. One for salads and one for sandwiches. Check the boxes of what you want on your sandwich and their are a lot of tasty choices. They also have specials on the board and a couple daily special desserts. They also have a two or three interesting beer choices (but not a full bar) if craft beer is your thing. My brisket sandwich was SUCCULENT! So tender and juicy.and a wonderful flavor. My friend's top round was just as impressive. I didn't feel the portions were undersized. typical sandwich for a sandwich place. I highly recommend this place. For reviewers that complained about the price and then stated they would rather go to Roy Rogers or Subway...my response is that a 2009 Lincoln Navigator costs way more than a 1989 Chevy Blazer but there is a reason for that. And any comparison with this place to a Roy Rogers or Subway is absolutely :LUDICROUS!. If you are looking for quantity or cheap price then partake of the fair at Roy Rogers or Subway. But if quality is your goal then this is the place. You won't be disappointed.. read more

We went here for breakfast one early Saturday morning after seeing a spot on Create about it. We just ordered breakfast because we didn't see the "Belly Buster" on the menu and couldn't recall the name of the thing. Plus they were under staffed that day so things were taking some time to get going. It was cool though. These types of joints typically serve bean water for coffee, but theirs was tastey. The croissant sandwich I ordered was bomb and the standard breakfast the hubster ordered was on point. As we were eating or waiting (can't recall) a couple comes through and around that time the owner also pops out to cut someones ham order. Afterwhich he takes the couples order and the lady gets the "Belly Buster". She was very excited about it . The couple proceeded to get more comfortable and were chatting away. We then see the meats (they are known for) being pulled out. "Dangit why couldn't we remember the name of that sandwich" went through our minds as we watched the owner carve on that beef in dissappointment. Man that beef looked good. So juicy so tender. The knife needed only to hint it was going to make a cut and the beef submitted happily. But back to the sandwich. What really drew us in was the manner in which the owner prepared it. It was with such care. Once done he presented the sandwich to the lady bustling with pride but giving a disclaimer. He jokes that his son does it better. From that point on, the couple was quiet and the lady handled that sandwich like a certified pro. Needless to say we will be back to try some roast beef or rather the "Belly Buster". Yummy sammies! The roast beef brisket was very wet (fatty) but tasty. The bread and all the toppings were really good too, with lots of options. I got coleslaw and a cranberry relish. I Tried this place for the first time saturday - It is way worth it we tried the roast beef/turkey/ham all juicy & delish - also tried the red beans & rice - I guess I'm to into Popeyes' red beans & rice also my mon tried the bread pudding she said it didnt have enough sauce and we also tried the turkey & rice soup it was ok - but the sandwiches were the best and I'll definetly come back for more - will try the breakfast this week. read more

MGM offers perfectly cooked meat in the turkey, ham, roast beef and brisket varieties. You pick your bread and toppings and off you go. They also have great daily soups and a few special sandwiches each day. Their breakfast sandwich on croissant is tasty and fillng. It is priced just right, pretty much a deal for the quality of food you get. read more

Almost seems silly to review with so many current reviews but we thought it was so good I have to add my two cents. Odd little restaurant in an old, gentrifying, industrial neighborhood. More a place for workers to eat breakfast and lunch than a tourist stop. However we braved the odd DC snow storm and we're glad we did. Monster meat sandwiches, mine as rare as I requested. Sodas and a couple of local brews on tap. Fries as good as the Ocean City board walk. Incredibly friendly service, plenty of room to sit at the "lunch counter" and at tables. Very clean restrooms. Great family place for a great sandwich, away from the hustle and bustle of DC. Minimal parking is an issue but on street and at the nearby Union Market are available. read more

Is this the "pit beef" that everyone talks about being so good in Baltimore? Don't know, never been there. But these people can make a good roast beef sandwich, that's for sure. LOVE THIS PLACE! I am a fan of the brisket sandwich on the onion roll and my husband loves the ham. Fries are fantastic-always hot and crispy. Owners are personable and really care about the customers and their business. I am so glad they have had success in NE DC as there are few other decent places to eat in the neighborhood. Great place for a real sandwich! Fresh bread and roasted meat with your choice of toppings. I ended up with a white meat turkey and ham combo on a onion roll. It was delicious. It's a bit of the beaten path-sort of across the street from the Brentwood post office, but worth the adventure. Oh and the place is spotless. read more
