Love Mother Rucker's Subs. It reminds me of the Old Blimpies in DC when a Hoagie was a Hoagie!!

I ordered one of their popular sandwiches, and as soon as I got to my car, I took a big bite. To my surprise, it wasn't quite what I expected. The bread was super soft, and both the tomatoes and meat tasted really fresh but there was just something missing that kept it from having that "wow" factor for me. The service, though, was excellent! The owner was very friendly, and the place wasn't as busy as I've heard it can get during the day, which made for a nice, easy experience. If you're looking for an affordable, fresh sandwich in the DMV area, I'd definitely say give this place a try , it might just hit the spot for you. read more

Black-owned Mother Rucker's is serving up THEE BEST SUBS IN DC (coming from a Jersey girl who is serious about her sandwiches)! Located in NE DC near H street, I'm so glad that I have this gem in my neighborhood. I ordered a foot long turkey & provolone sub and it came out to around $13. That in my opinion is soooooo great when you have other sub shops charging you like $20. The bread is the star of the show here and I love that they have toppings like hot peppers, oregano, oil & vinegar and sweet peppers. They quickly got my order ready despite it being busy on a Wednesday afternoon. And I love that they asked if I wanted to sandwich cut in 4's, in half or not at all. Once I got to my destination I ate this sub so quickly with a friend and was thinking about when I was going to get my next one. Hands down I highly suggest supporting this local business. Not sure how I should review this. It was a very awkward timing I think, where the main owner (I believe) was not attentive to me upon entering and ordering. She did have a second person assisting, but they needed assistance to which the owner wasn't very attentive to either. Overall just not the most pleasant customer service. Awwww man, I love Mother Rucker's Sub. This is a D.C. staple and the best sandwich spot I've ever had . Black owned and the sandwich symbolizes a connection to D.C. I always get the Marion Barry , a formal mayor of D.C. Your sandwich is made directly in your face and it is exactly what you ask for. Now this isn't a sit down and dine type spot . You kind of ordered, pickup, and go however there is room for a quick bite if that is what you need . It's 1 or 2 tables available for you . However, there was a small dog inside the establishment that urinated on the floor during my visit. I like dogs, but in a food establishment, that felt unsanitary and unpleasant. Mother Ruckers's strength is its consistency. Every time I go, I order the Turkey, Ham, and Provolone with everything except onions and get the same great sandwich every time. While it's a simple meal, it's a well-priced (under $15) and filling (12-inch) sandwich that never disappoints. The Italian seasoning and hot peppers give the subtle but important flavor that sets it apart and the workers make sure to put enough mustard, mayo, oil and vinegar that I've never complained about a dry sandwich. Prior to this recent visit, I had not been to Mother Rucker's in YEARS. I am glad to see they survived the pandemic and the changing demographics of the neighborhood. The bread that they use has perfect consistency and taste and all of their subs are good. Service is friendly and usually quick. Best subs in DC - I said it!! We up, way up!!!!!! I got 12 in roast beef, Godfather 3, and The Marion Barry and all three were equally good. The quality of meat is exceptional once again. You really get your money's worth with taste, portion, and balance of ingredients(meat, cheese, condiments, seasoning) includes a soft roll that's not too soft and keeps the sandwich from falling apart. It looks plain and simple but it's really a work of art. I got the subs yesterday and I'm still Jonesing and plotting on my grandbaby piece. Staff is friendly and efficient. Pro tip: get your bread toasted. If not the wetness of the oil/vinegar/wet ingredients will make your bread soggy. Mother Rucker's is a decent shop located near H street. It's easy to miss so take your time while looking for it. I've been here twice and ordered the ham and turkey sub "Mother's Way" which comes with oil, vinegar and seasoning. The sandwiches were good both times. It's a simple shop so don't go expecting an extensive or extravagant menu. They are simple and straight to the point. While the food is good, the shop has some kinks to work out. I've driven past this shop a couple times during their recorded hours and they weren't open. The parking in front of the shop is limited so you may have to drive around a couple times to catch someone leaving or park a few blocks away. My biggest issue with this shop is how long it takes to get your order. I understand they were short staffed when I went, there were only two people working, but 30+ minutes for a sub and chips is a long time. I think this spot would benefit from more staff on the weekends to prepare orders quicker. One of the employees was between taking orders, preparing them and taking payments which slowed down the process a lot. Overall, I have enjoyed my food from this show and this shop has potential to be even greater if they work out some kinks. read more

I am not lying when I tell you that Mother Rucker's is my new favorite sub shop. What upsets me is it's always been right around the corner from one of the offices that I work out of, and I had no clue. All of their breads and meats are baked & sliced in house. Everything is so fresh, and plentiful. Their slogan is: "Less bread, more meat", and man oh man do they live up to it. So far, I've had The Godfather, a delicious combination of: Genoa Salami, Ham & Capicolla paired with Provolone cheese that I'm sure Don Corleone would approve of. I've also had the Pastrami, Roast beef and Turkey sub(the name escapes my memory), that was just as delicious if not more. This. Place. Is. My. FAVORITE! This is the absolute best sandwich in DC. No bar. The bread is so buttery soft and the ratio of vegetables to bread is so perfect. They are fairly priced (rarity in DC) and keep the line moving. Don't expect to sit, there isn't much space, and the place isn't in the best part of town. But at least once a week I risk my life to go get a sandwich from this place. This is a carry out your order type of place so the interior is purposely spartan. The owner is a constant presence so the quality has held up over the years. I love supporting this small business because the owner, the eponymous, Ms. Rucker. I am rooting for her since she chose to invest in this community in the face of long odds before the city's fortunes started to turn. Just be patient when ordering because she seems to be experimenting with various ways to fill orders and make sandwiches efficiently. It always seems like a hodgepodge of methods to order (paper, face to face, online, phone). Just follow the Subway model of order filling, one sandwich at a time. On the whole this is a minor trifle. Regardless, Mother Rucker's makes a mean sub. You can create it as you like but I recommend the straight up "motherload." It's huge and amazing! Just some decent subs for a decent price! The menu prices have raised so now everything is about $8.50. They really densely pack your sandwich so it's very filling. Everything was tasty. I decided to visit Mother Rucker's because it was a great day for a sub. Many of my Yelp friends visited so that was motivation enough to venture out and try. It's about 22 minutes from my home. Traveling into DC, parking is always of a concern, but no worries here plenty of street parking and parking right in front of the store. I was greeted upon walking in and asked to watch myself as they just cleaned the floors. The store feels like home when you walk in. The menu board had many selections. I decided on an Italian type sub and got the Godfather 3. I was nicely asked what I wanted on my sub and it was made clearly with care as when I unpacked it at home everything was neatly in place. I am a carb watcher so if I get bread I'm thinking please be worth it!! And it was. It was super soft everything was fresh. The meat was plentiful, lettuce and onion crispy, tomatoes perfect, the pickles were so good. Somehow a sweet pepper was in the mix I will definitely get them next time. I haven't had a sub this good since I was back in Carolina. Worth the drive for me. Will definitely be back. I don't think I can eat a sub from any of my usual places after this.
