I am moving about a block away from this place and decided to get lunch there when checking out my new apartment. It has a very nice interior, but seems oddly located on the outside. It is attached to what seems like a partially abandoned warehouse-type building. The inside is kinda 50's diner looking, and is basically a triangular counter with a prep area in the middle. I was able to try the roast beef and the ham. Both were spectacular. They roast all their meats in-house and have them sitting whole on a carving board waiting to be sliced and stacked on a sandwich. They smartly seasoned the roast beef while stacking it on the bread. Otherwise I think it would have been undersalted. The sandwiches are basic. There are minimal topping options, but you don't want much to get in the way of lets say half-pound pile of perfectly cooked meat on that sandwich. Some horseradish sauce and caramelized onions on the roast beef and some brown mustard and cranberry compote on the ham, and my wife and I shared two amazing sandwiches. The price makes this place a treat and not a regular lunch, but its not exorbitant. read more

And during the rush hours, seems like you can't enjoy your food because there are so many customers waiting. However, now they renovated their space, make it bigger and more family friendly. This place is absolutely amazing! The second you walk in, you are hit by the smell of perfectly in-house roasted turkey, baked ham, and slow-cooked brisket. I went there for lunch with a few friends. I got the Thanksgiving Dinner. It is an open faced sandwich loaded with fresh roasted turkey (white and dark meat), delicious homemade cornbread stuffing, and traditional cranberry sauce all smothered in gravy. The Thanksgiving sandwich was simply to-die-for. For $11 I got enough food to feed 2-3 people so it was also a steal of deal. My friends got the chicken salad sandwich and roast beef sandwich, which they both said was the best they had ever had. The sandwiches are made to order, so it took 15 minutes to get our food after we placed our order. I realize this is not long in the scheme of things, but I thought it would have been a bit faster since there was only one person ahead of me in line and all the ingredients were made (they just needed assembling). The sandwich builders were very friendly, however. The shop has very limited parking. Several cars were parked such that they were blocking other cars. While I was there, a few car owners (including my friend) had to move their vehicles mid-meal in order to free trapped cars. The on-point food, however, made everything totally worth it! There's diversity in the menu for those who don't care to just wallow in stupendous roast beef--I've even, for some reason I can't recall, brought home a tuna salad sandwich from MGM and it was great. Since the great crisis started, I've found them calm and collected even at their busiest, and beyond that, accommodating, friendly, and kind. Yes, yep, yum! I enjoyed everything about this food and experience. Seems like the spot just pops out of nowhere when you're driving and could make you think it's a "hole in the wall" - it's the best hole you'll find. The turkey breast was nicely seasoned and moist. They piled so much meat on that sandwich, I won't need to eat for the rest of the day. I just wanted to say the tall guy who wears the glasses that takes the orders at the register, he's going to either open his own restaurant one day or be the general manager of a restaurant. He's the epitome of the word "Customer Service". For just under six dollars, MGM will shove a breakfast in your face large enough to require three plates: 1) The toast plate: with a choice of white, wheat, rye, or maybe something else depending on what their baker delivered that morning. "I'll have the wheat, please." 2) The meat & egg plate: two eggs done however you want, a choice of meat, and an option for home fries or grits (plain or creamed, cheese if you want). "Over-easy, some fresh carved ham, and plain grits, kind sir." 3) The carb plate: french toast (3) or pancakes (2 big 'uns). "Hmmmm.... flapjacks sound good." It wasn't greasy at all, the eggs were done just how I like them, and the hand-carved ham was phenomenal. All in all, a wonderfully executed big-honkin' ol' fashioned hearty American breakfast, the stuff that fuels farmers and factory workers across this country. No bourgeousie brunch to be found here--you can take your mimosas and shove them up your mimassholes. The topper for breakfast was over-hearing two men discuss how "the best currency is pussy, cuz ain't no man gon' turn down pussy, that shit is accepted e'erywheres." Brilliant. An oasis: Very good food by extremely friendly people in a nice setting. While the sandwich wasn't the best in the Deece (Loeb's is better), it is very tasty. The meats are carved to order and are fantastic. I had the roast beef and my wife had the turkey. Her turkey was moist, hot and well-seasoned. My beef was quite tasty, but could have been hotter. Unfortunately, the rolls and pickles they used are safeway quality and really detract from the overall sandwich. Basically, they make their own meats, but did not put much effort into the rest of the sandwich or anything else they serve (utz chips at a "gourmet" sandwich place?). That said, the meat really is outstanding and still shines despite the mediocrity of the other ingredients. The service could not have been better: A lovely lady sat us at the counter, explained the ordering system to us and proudly forecast that not only would we love it, but we'd be back. (An employee that not only believes in the product, but cares about the business? Awesome!) All told, if you are in the neighborhood, you'll be very, very pleased if you stop in. Sure, I once felt quite threatened by five youths brandishing a knife at the nearest metro stop in the middle of a very bright day, but hey, if you want to talk about diners and dives and what not, this is a good place to be. Plus, there are these contraptions called cars that can move you from point A to MGM Roast Beef. You can do this. But I digress. You are here for the roast beef sandwich. The meat itself is top round, cut right in front of you, and custom built to your own specifications. You can have it served regular of au jus. I'd recommend a simple dipped roast beef sandwich with onions and a bit of fresh horseradish. Or maybe you are not here for the roast beef sandwich. If roast beef isn't appealing to you, don't let the name of this restaurant fool you. They also have turkey, brisket, and ham. Or maybe you are a vegetarian? Well, in that case, I can't help you and neither can MGM for that matter unless, of course, you are simply satisfied that they offer sweet tea at MGM. But everyone should appreciate that. And I have it on authority that the ham sandwiches are pretty legit. I'm not sure that this is the best roast beef sandwich I have had in the city (perhaps I should try the ham one after all), but it is pretty good and yes, I do like that it is located in the middle of nowhere and has not received proper attention. MGM Roast Beef puts out a great product in a clean inviting setting. Their food is delicious and their service is solid. Their brisket sandwich can hold its own against any top sandwich joint in town and their healthy tuna and chicken salad options are top notch as well. Their fries are some of the best I've ever had, period. I also have stopped in for breakfast and had some excellent pancakes cooked by Ryan, one of the owners. Those who are faulting MGM for having prices higher than Subway or who thinks the sandwiches are too small just boggle my mind. And for the guy who "overheard" what they get their meats at per pound... come on man, there is way more that goes into the cost of a sandwich than the cost of the meat alone. Located across the street from the Brentwood Post Office (of anthrax fame), MGM Roast Beef is a spot of brightness in an otherwise drab, primarily industrial part of town. The routine is this: you enter, either grab a counter seat (if there are any available) or stand in line. Either way, you fill out a sandwich form with your bread (a variety of rolls including onion and sesame), meat, and condiments of choice and present it to the server. Beef comes in the form of either top round (your typical roast beef) or brisket, but they also have ham and turkey, all carved while you wait. And damn fine roast beef it is; the top round was cooked to a perfect pink in the middle; by far the best I've had in DC (and you can get that "au jus" if you like). It will set you back about $8.00, but totally worth it. Not to be overlooked: their soups. The Maryland Crab soup I had was quite tasty, if a little on the sweet side. The space is bright and airy with high ceilings and large windows that overlook the intersection of Brentwood Road and 9th Street NE. Eight counter seats looking over the sandwich prep area and another eight looking out the front window. They have an ABC request to sell beer and wine in the works, and the owner is planning on expending next door with seating for 42, in which case they will be staying open later. read more

MEAT... who doesn't love meat??!?! I discovered this place on accident. I should say I drove by and was intriqued by the crazy crowd, I could see it just driving by! The meat here is amazing! I had the ham sandwich, and I mean HAM! Like better-than-HoneyBaked-Ham- HAM!!! SO good, and so cheap. My friend had the fries as well, with the chicken sandwich that looked SO good. What I like - it's FAST, it's quality and it's very low-key Not so much - how crowded it gets around lunch and the lack of seating. There's a counter for people to sit, but it's kinda limited. I read all the great reviews for this place, but wondered where they were eating. I have tried MGM twice. The first time, I went around 3pm, I had the roast beef, it was dry and needed seasoning. The waitress said it may have been because it was after rush time and it had been sitting there. So, I tried it again, at the peak of lunch time, this time I had the brisket. I saw them bring out a new one and I figured it would be really juicy, boy was I wrong, bland and dry, dry, dry. I also thought it was pretty expensive for what you get. I was sitting at the counter and the owner was ordering his meat and supplies from the purveyor. He only pays a little over $3.00 a pound for his brisket and is charging close to $8.00 a sandwich. Quite a mark up! I don't think I will give it a third time. Good luck MGM, looks like your place is more hype than quality! read more

Ok, one more time!!, this place is #1 in Custer more service, # in catering services and #1 in food taste, and presentation. Ryan parked out front of our work sight that is in busy no parking downtown DC. He came in to the department and set everything up. We have ordered from this place several time and never have they let us down. When preparing the food, Ryan to into consideration our individual needs, like he packs the grits in individual small containers. Maybe to some of you that doesn't make a difference but to our office it did, because we eat on the run so that small gesture meant a lot. Also, I must say it is hard to get fruit that is out of season in this area that taste sweet and fresh our fruit tray was the bomb! :). Food was delivered on time and hot between 830 and 9am. As of 10 o'clock the coffee was still hot how good is that. Our breakfast included, Pork and turkey Bacon, pork and turkey sausage, Brioche French toast, fried potatoes and grits. To top it all off we had good old coffee and a magnificent fruit tray. What more can you ask for.
