Can you believe I could have been the first to review this place? June of 2009 we moved to DC into a bed and breakfast in Brookland because we hadn't completed buying our new house near H St. With the drive from Brookland to H St we passed right by this place. I repeatedly told my wife we needed to try the Devil's Sandwich shop. Seriously... they have a cow or a steer silloute painted on the building however he distinctly has shoulders so it appears he is standing upright... more like that devil. I checked Yelp and no reviews... so I decided to risk it anyways. It was awesome. It became an automatic stop on the way to and from the Home Depot. I'm still amazed that place is there with so little other dining business around it. Seems like the type of place that should be downtown charging 1.5 to twice as much. Their rolls are delicious the freshly carved piled high meat is outstanding. I tend to go with the turkey. My wife loves the fresh horseraddish on the roast beef. My Dad liked the ham and got some of the Ah Jous (spelling?) sauce to go with it. The place is very clean, which is very important if you are carving delicious meat in front of everyone. The have a long counter that is perfect to sit at and enjoy your freshly made sandwich. That being said the other side is set up for a potential long line of folks ordering sandwichs and other food to go. Whichever you choose... choose to experience it. The only knock is that they don't have free refills but that is because they don't have fountain soda so they don't get my standard one star deduction. Also be warned... their pickle coins on the sandwichs are sweet (I prefer mine dill but that is just a matter of taste). I know for folks that don't have a car this would probably be a challenge and with the bridge reconstruction it might be an olympic challenge at the moment but so worth it! read more

This place it ridiculous.. At first glance instinct makes you focus on the prices but then as you watch them prepare your food and cut the meat.. Man! The juices and cuts make your mouth water. You get a thought in your head of, "This may be the most wonderful thing I will ever taste." When you get your food it does not disappoint that thought.. So I a definitely a fan. This place is like Diner, Dives, and Drives esque. No frills, a little messy, and located in an odd area. I had a make your own roast beef - I added slaw, swiss cheese, pickles and horseradish. The beef was so nice and tender, melt in your mouth. I love the pickle chips and the extra they give you on the side. Really nice size and satisfying sandwich. My only thing a few hours later and that whole weekend my tummy did not feel right. This would be four stars, but the extra star is for good service. We came here for breakfast, and it was a winner. Everything was good, but if I were to order again, I'd get an omelet, bacon, and creamy grits. Now, I don't normally enjoy grits, but these are exceptional. The home fries, which are a breakfast must-have for me, weren't very good. The winner though? My bf and I were lamenting not ordering a roast beef sandwich, when they started slicing a steamy, fresh piece right in front of us. We casually asked if they offered sides, and they sliced off two full pieces, one for each of us. It was soft, tender, and thick cut with a very tasty au jus. This place seems like a secret. It's in an isolated part of town surrounded by railroad tracks, not close to any residential area. Even when you make a special trip to get there, it would be easy to miss. But if you make the effort to go you'll be glad you did. Clean as a whistle inside, with a counter where you can eat in although most people order to go. They serve breakfast six days a week but the reason to go is the hand-carved sandwiches - roast beef, brisket, turkey, ham. The portions are generous, prices are fair, and the sandwiches are of a quality you can rarely find nowadays. I just wish they offered some kind of light, crusty bread like a New Orleans po-boy. One day after a longing for hand carved roast beef that only seemed to be something you could get north of Baltimore I set out on the web to see if DC could provide anything to satisfy that craving. None the less, I grabbed the wife and jumped in the car for a 18 mile drive to what I hoped would be the missing link in the DC food chain, A hand carved roast beef that bordered on North East ale house quality. Beef and Beer are the staple of home spun charity events in Philly and to date, nothing had come close. So about 40 minutes later we found ourselves at the door, waiting to fill out our order slips for what was looking like a fantastic spread of carvery station meats. We both got the hand carved beef, wet with provolone a side of gravy fries and a can of coke. pulled ourselves up to the window seating and started eating. It was almost a religious experience. Best Roast Beef I've had since I moved here. Tender, perfectly cooked and generously portioned on a good, yet nondescript kaiser. Also never underestimate the power of gravy fries. Having had a great experience, decided to continue to press our luck, we got to go sandwiches of their Brisket and Turkey. Have to say dinner that night was equally great. Delish!! The fact that you can get medium roast beef cut right in front of you is amazing!! And the look of the food is only 1/2 as good as the taste. My mouth is watering for the fresh horseradish sauce that they offer on top of juicy a roast beef sandwich, as well as the fresh hand cut fries. Need i mention the Fresh brewed iced tea?!? One day as I did my Rhode Island trek out of DC into MD......i had to take a detour and viewed this huge sign with ROAST BEEF in the name. Daily Specials that people seem to lineup for? Check! Hearty Breakfasts with delicious grits?Check! I WAS SOLD! MGM is a quaint little place with a small parking lot and a U shaped counter and a small counter sitting area off to the left with a TV in a corner. The makings of a local joint and one known to lucky locals There is not a ton of space when its crowded which it does get during the rush eating times. Staff is friendly and the place is kept clean as a whistle. I have been here for breakfast and lunch and have never been disappointed. Breakfast is great (i.e. the creamed grits)...but its lunch where this place shines. The hand carved roast beef, turkey, and ham are juicy delicious and will make your mouth water as you watch them carve and assemble your sandwich. The choice of toppings is not Subway over-the-top but is generous with items like real fresh cut jalapenos and horseradish. My main complaint is it is not open Sundays.....as this would be a true savior for early morning jaunts to Redskins games, or even for picking up sandwiches on the way to late games. My coworker/work partner in crime put me on to this spot for lunch one day. He said the meats were cut to order and everything was really good so I took his word for it. It's located on the corner of Brentwood Road so the parking lot has limited parking. They have also expanded to add an extra wing for additional seating area. We decided to sit at the bar which I learned after sitting down was the only place that gets seat service. If you sit anywhere else in the restaurant you have to stand in line to order your food and wait to be called. I ordered the hawaiian sandwich, ham, pineapple, bacon and BBQ sauce. Sounds delicious is theory but I felt it was missing something. I'm a smoked meat/BBQ queen and I guess since it was missing that smoked taste I want sold on this particular sandwich. They give you samples of all the meat and I smoked their top round. Really juicy, perfectly cooked and I know it would make a bomb ass french dip. Immediately after my sample I regretted not getting the french dip. I gave the place four stars because of the serving/seating thing mainly. I'm sure the other sandwiches are really good. I have been to this establishment several times for lunch, breakfast and for carry out. The last time I went, we ordered two big platters, one with French toast and turkey sausage and one with pancakes and bacon. The turkey sausage was a bit tough however everything else was great. The grits were creamy and the pancakes were buttery. The French toast was nice and thick; you definitely get a whole lot of food. Their lunch sandwiches are large and plentiful. Omg where do I begin!? First off this is the best damn sandwich place I've ever been to. I am the person that hates sandwiches but this place right here- is heaven!! When you walk in you grab a slip and write down what you want and they make it to perfection. I had a turkey sandwich with the cranberry sauce and avocado and some more stuff and they made it exactly how I wanted it. I'm not going to lie I even shed a tear. Even though a sandwich, fries and a drink will cost around 15-20 it's well worth the money. The staff is super friendly and they are very helpful with whatever you need. Give instructions for your own mix & match combo, and they'll deliver. As everyone has warned, parking is terrible near here. Just walking into MGM, I knew I was going to leave happy. After a long weekend of moving, my dad and I (both food junkies), decided to stop here for lunch before he flew back to NY. We did not do take out, but rather sat at the old-school looking bar and enjoyed a great meal in a great atmosphere. When we first got in, parking was a bit of an issue, since their lot is tiny, and it was the middle of the day. However, it was well worth it. Once we walked in, you could smell the delicious food and it made me even hungrier. I ordered the brisket, which was cooked to perfection. It's always great when you see the giant slab being carved right in front of you as they prepare your sandwich. They havea ton of condiments and cheeses to put on, and I believe you could put everything possible on this sandwich, and the flavor of the brisket would have still stuck out. Yes, its that good. I got my sandwich with fries, which were also cooked and seasoned amazingly. It was an excellent combination with the sandwich. Service was quick and extremely friendly, giving my dad and I recommendations on where to eat, drink, or check out while down here in DC. My husband and I woke up this morning looking for something good to eat...while there aren't many good places on this side of town I decided to check this place out on yelp and to my surprise there were very good reviews. I thought this to be some hole in the wall with dry-meat sandwiches and i dont even eat roast beef *_* Based on yelpers reviews we went in to find a cozy little diner-like atmosphere where you can actually see the fresh bread and meat being carved to your liking. This place is a hidden gem. Take it from a Texan who has devoured delicious brisket for decades -- the brisket at MGM is worth the trip. The brisket isn't prepared with traditional barbecue rub, but the meat is the juiciest, most tender and moist brisket I've had in the city. For a less fatty cut, go with the top round roast beef. The buns you choose from add just the right texture, and on my first trip the ladies at the counter let me sample the different cuts so I could make a good choice. They also offered several ways to dress the sandwich -- I go with a little horseradish, onions, lettuce and tomato. But if you want it to taste more like Texas barbecue, just go with the sweet barbecue sauce. Fries are freshly cut from potatoes and lightly fried. I find the service to be better than your typical ambivalent DC experience, and the place is full of regulars. Such a great value. Make a trip. read more

I am only taking a star away for the customer service other than that my sandwich was great and everything I expected from the reviews of this place. My first time there was yesterday and I went in and stood next to the cash register. I wanted to do carry-out so I assumed that I would have to speak to someone near the register. As I stood there for several minutes, not quite five minutes, behind the counter were two people, one look like she was a server and two others preparing orders. They see me and nothing at all, no how can I help you, is this your first time here. NOTHING. I finally interrupted a sandwich maker and informed him I never been here and needed help. After I initiate some service everything went smooth sailing from there. I think attention to customers are needed. I would imagine a business would want to gain new customers everyday so find a way to interact with customers instead of assuming your regulars know to grab a piece of paper or pen. I will say that once I talk to the gentlemen making sandwich he stopped to help me and explained the different sheets, hat is why i gave 4 stars and not 3 stars. My turkey club sandwich was awesome. I moved closer to the area and think I may become a regular for breakfast and dinner as I drive back and forth to work. I just have to remember not to speak to the people that work there and find a piece of sheet. I hope it works the same for breakfast. read more

But that's where the positives end. $13-15 for a sandwich? With no sides? That isn't even all that big? It took them 5 minutes after my order on an empty Friday afternoon to notice they didn't have the meat I'd ordered. And then offered me a different sandwich in exchange, but nothing extra at all. And then tried to bag our sandwiches three different times despite our insistence we didn't need a bag. The brisket's good, but nowhere near as good as DCity Smokehouse. There's just not much that makes $29 for two relatively small sandwiches with no sides and shoddy service worth it... MGM Roast Beef is a great treat. The staff and management are friendly, the food is hot and fresh. The store is very clean and sleek. While it is probably a special trip for most patrons, given its somewhat inconvenient location, I would say it is definitely worth the first visit and then you will go back again. Parking was a bit of an issue when I went on Saturday because of the car auction next door, but I did find a place. MGM is one of those places that does one thing and does it right. read more

I stopped by MGM Roast Beef after making a run to the post office across the street (hint, this post office has Saturday hours!) and it was delicious! I ordered the sandwich with roast beef, cole slaw, and BBQ sauce. The roast beef was tender and easily one of the top three roast beefs I've ever had. Like others mentioned, parking seems like it would be difficult and it's not in the most accessible area for public transportation. I'm dying to go back and try the ham (it was glistening!!!).
