Really good local Mexican food. Not a chain. We go here quite often as it is close, but even if it were farther away we would make the drive. The steak ranchero is excellent, as is the carne asada. It's clean and friendly and offers a generic Mexican food menu with few items from their old menu (e.g., Cuban sandwich, which is pretty good!). So my girl and I went to this place, we have been saying for a while that we wanted to try it. The salsa was very good and mild just like we like it. SO if you like hot salsa this isn't it. She ordered tacos and me the chimi (chicken), my go to at a mexican food joint. Both of us were very pleased with the service and the food. I was skeptical with some bad reviews that I read about, but our experience was very good. The prices were more than reasonable, we will be back sooner rather than later. Mi Taza: Turning Hunger into Anger one minute at a time! We arrived 6:40 on a friday night and the place was moderately empty, however, there was no one to greet us at the door and we sat ourselves, it took us another 5 minutes before we were acknowledged by our 'waiter' who appeared to mentally 'be out to lunch' and spoke in low grave tones and overall put out somewhat of a creepy vibe. He suggested we order some complimentary chips and salsa as an appetizer. Most tex-mex restaurants I have frequented offer these automatically and gratuitously, if not already have them sitting out waiting for you at the table as you arrive. Not Mi Taza, we had to order them while we placed our food order and waited another 5 minutes for them to arrive, only to find chips that appeared to be taken out of a bag, lightly spritzed with oil and left under a heat lamp all day, and the salsa was bland at best and extremely watered down. As our basket of chips dwindled down along with our half-filled cups of salsa the 'waiter' gave us more salsa took our empty basket of chips and proceeded to stand in the front of the restaurant with his hands grasped behind his back as if he was in an empty restaurant. looking at my watch I realized I'd spent 20 minutes there and people that arrived after us were already recieving there food order while we were weighing the need to have to go interrupt our waiters' daydream to try and coax him to bring us a refill basket of complimentary chips. We decided we'd had enough and left before the food even arrived at our table. Probably for the best judging by the sub-mediocre chips and salsa, that usually says a lot about a mexican restaurant, bad salsa=bad food. As we were gathering our things to leave the waiter quickly rushed over wondering if we needed anything, I reminded him of the basket of chips he was supposed to get us 5 minutes earlier, he looked at our empty table and quizzically asked I didn't bring them to you? Yeah....probably NOT going back. Went in by myself and was seated promptly. Chips and salsa arrived quickly and the drink order was taken quickly. Not surprising since I was there at 11:30 on a Sunday with three other tables. I ordered queso with my chips...came out fine and was tasty along with the salsa which was fresh and flavorful. So....I thought, hey, this is a pretty nice place. Full bar, three tvs for optimal viewing, great atmosphere, staff was friendly. Then...it happened. I ordered the chimichanga...easy/simple, right? Chimichangas, for those that don't know are flour tortillas, filled with chicken or beef, and cheese and then deep fried...mine on the other hand did NOT come out fried and the flour tortilla tasted like raw pastry dough. So I plucked out the filling, mixed it with the tiny lettuce, guac, and sour cream and cheese and made a little salad which was decent. The refried beans were thin and pasty and the rice was dry with no flavor. Finally the waiter comes back over and asks me how it was. I told him that he needs to notify the cook that for future reference, chimichangas are fried. He said, "they didn't fry it?" I said, "no." He said, "well that's no good! You want me to get you another one?" I said, " I can't eat another one, who is your manager?" He said...yes...wait for it..."That would be me." WTF? You are standing in front of me knowing full well you are the manager and you are not offering a discount and I have to ask for the manager?? What?? So, I had to bring up the NOVEL IDEA of a discount and he said he would comp the queso....wow...a WHOLE fricken two dollars. So I looked at him and asked, "TWO DOLLARS??" He just nodded. Then I agreed, not wanting to argue over an already crappy experience. So, he came back a little later with the ticket and said he gave me half price for the chimichanga, probably because he got four more tables in after me and realized he could probably afford it. Gee...thanks. In looking in the prices for drinks $4.99 for a margarita is a little steep for me...I think there are better places around that will receive my patronage. Prices for the food are way too high. This restaurant wont last long, went on a Friday at 7pm and the place was dead. Not good for a restaurant that wants to keep its doors open. We orderd sweet tea and they were 3 dollars each, the tortillas were not homemade. The food tasted the same as a Taco Cabana, but at Taco Cabana they give you more food. Our kids ordered the fries with chicken nuggets and they fries were over cooked and gross. The waiter was weird and acting as though it was a five star restaurant. I spent 58 dollars there and thats the last time we go there. Oh and the sodas tasted as they were from a two liter and the beans had no flavor. After a few bites of chips and salsa that was no good, I got beef fajitas. I asked for an extra plate and got a plate was dirty with food still on it. There wasn't much meat on the fajita platter, and the meat was probably the worst I've ever had. It was like rubber and had zero flavor. After finally getting through what little meat there was, I was still starving and so I ordered some street tacos to go because they looked good in the picture on yelp. They weren't quite as bad as the fajitas, but still not much flavor nonetheless. I don't really like to try different foods that I'm not use to but my friends invited me to this restaurant with them. I was scared at first because I didn't recognize any of the foods besides the quesadillas and enchiladas. I decided to taste the arepas and I have to say i fell in love with them. I also like the restaurant it is a relaxed place with music. I have to say i love the TV's because I love watching football. With my arepas I had fresh mango juice and i was just in heaven everything was so good that i will be back no doubt. The employees were so friendly and nice. I have to say it was a little pricey but for that amazing tasty food I was willing to pay. I'm glad that y'all are open and see you guys soon. read more

I am glad this place is so close to my house, but I think the location is unfortunate for the business. I don't believe most of Denton knows it exists yet. The food is excellent, especially if you are looking for something different. I personally enjoy trying new foods, and their menu has many South American entrees that you don't regularly find in Denton. Despite the out of the way location for most Dentonites, the arepas are worth the trip. The service staff is incredibly friendly and prompt, but the atmosphere is relaxed so I wouldn't recommend trying this place for your first time if you are in a hurry. The bathrooms were flawless, though I doubt they have ever been used. The prices are reasonable. There is endless, well-lit parking as it shares the lot with Kroger. It really is 4.5 stars in my opinion. read more

This is the Best Kept Secret in Denton! I have eaten at Mi Taza at least a dozen times since April 2012, It's just an excellent place to go for fajitas & margarita's. The spicy shrimp flameado or the 8oz carne asada plate are muy bueno. The chicken monterrey is also excellent. I start my experience off by ordering a tasty guacamole dish with freshly made corn tortiillas and butter. That goes nicely with a coronarita to start. We were excited to try this new place. We had heard so many good things about the food. Unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. We start off with a pitcher of margarita for $9.99 and it was completely water down. We figured no big deal that's what you get for that price. We ordered their $10 a glass margaritas with top shelf tequila. I've never been a bartender but these were the worst tasting margaritas we've ever had. I order the combo flemado and it only had a sprinkle of cheese on top of it, the rice was undercooked and all the food was very bland. Sadly I'm on day 2 of being sick after eating there. 1 star for the good salsa and 1 star for the carne asada. We spent well over $100 and will not be coming back. read more

We've been going to this restaurant for the past few months. We've experienced, good food, drinks and excellent service up until two weeks ago. We went in for dinner at 6:30pm on a weeknight. We were greeted by the staff, like usual. We normally sit at the bar but we had two extra people with us and there was no room so we got a table. One of our usually servers brought us our first round of drinks. We ordered and then a server named Alex took over the service. All was going well until we received the check which was hand written. Three out of the four of us were charged for 4 margaritas when we only had 3. We told the server about the mistake and he became hostile and told my son that he was mistaken!! We were only in there for 1.5 hours and know what we ordered. He went and discussed it with one of the woman servers and came back and told us he removed the extra drinks that we were charged for. He was trying to say that the first server served us two drinks before he took over and that was NOT true. Since this incident, we have noticed a delcine in friendliness and good service to us. Last night, I went in with a friend and we sat at the bar. We sat there for 15 minutes before someone asked us what we'd like. A couple came in, sat at the bar next to us and Alex came running over, greeted them enthusiatically and got them a drink immediately. They were served within a few minutes of entering the restaurant and we hadn't even been acknowledged. This man ignores us, give us dirty looks and treats us like second class citizens. He doesn't even say hello to us anymore. I must say, Ada, Mary, Ashley and Amber have all been awesome. We will no longer be going to this place anymore because of the attidude of this server who was wrong and blames us for some reason. Too bad, we really were good customers and have brought many new customers to them. If this man can't be nice to all customers, he shouldn't be working as a server in a restaurant. read more

We just recently came here for the first time in the last month and can't stay away! Very family friendly...we always see families with young children (we have a five year old and a baby, so that's important when dining out), great food, great prices and great service. I love the salsa...tons of cilantro and very fresh. Their house margaritas are only $3.99, and the "small" appetizer queso is under $3 and enough to satisfy our family of three. I very much appreciate that it doesn't taste like standard "cheese product" queso. I've had the shredded beef tacos and green enchiladas (stuffed with good quality chicken) and both were excellent. We weren't big fans of the "chimi cheesecake" but that's probably just a personal preference, no mess-up on their part. Sopapillas and fried ice cream are both very good. I always judge my mexican restaurants by their burritos. The best burrito I have had was in Southern California so all burritos are judged against those. I asked the waiter's (no idea his name, never gave it and wore no name tag) recommendation from the 3 choices. He suggested the ground beef (B1?) which I was leary of because I had my mind on a carne asada burrito. He suggested the cheese sauce, which luckily I ordered on the side. Do not order this burrito, I could have made it at home for a buck or two vs. the 9 bucks I paid. Taco Bell $1.29 burrito is better. The cheese sauce was extremely bland. How can you mess up rice and beans. The two beers I had were cold and good. My girl had street tacos - 2 steak and 1 pork. They did not ask what kind of beans and brought runny charro soup. however they quickly exchanged for refried. She said the Pork taco was not flavorable at all and the steak tacos were decent. The rice was hard and only edible mixed with the beans. She also thought the cheese sauce for the burrito tasted awful. We decided tonight we are too spoiled with So Cal mexican food and wish Texas would stop trying to cater to americans and start making real mexican food ! Two beers, two waters and two entrees with a $5 tip was $32.76. too expensive for Mexican on a Thursday night, when I can go to Texas Roadhouse and have two awesome steaks, potatoes and salads with beers for less. read more
