Took a walk down Moody Street the other day and realized I had never been to Mi Tierra. The man working the counter was very nice and greeted us with a huge smile. I ordered two chicken tacos. They were delicious. I told myself I needed to come back and try more. So the following week I went back. The same person greeted me with the same huge smile. I got the pastor torta with a side of rice and beans. The torta was delicious, great bread, fresh toppings and melty cheese. The beans were awful, don't waste your time. This place is delicious! Awesome Salvadoran food in Waltham. We came in for lunch on Saturday and the restaurant was pretty empty. We ordered, picked a table to sit down at, and within 5 minutes, the food arrived at our table. We got the barbacoa and the carnitas platas. The barbacoa was really flavorful and had a good chew to it. The carnitas were also super juicy. Both plates came with tomato rice, pico de gallo and black beans, and they even gave us free tortillas to eat with our platas. The staff here are so friendly and welcoming. The owner took the time to explain all the different types of things they offered on the menu, and then even gave us his favorite recommendations. First thing I have to say is the staff here are SO NICE! There was a nice kid (someone's daughter?) who welcomed us in. The manager explained each item on the menu to us and told us his favorites. I think they recently updated their menu, which is a little sad because I saw a ton of recommendations for the pupusas. I didn't see pupusas on the new menu. Still, they had a decent selection between tacos, burritos, tortas, and platos. We got the barbacoa and carnitas platos. The meat was really juicy and rich. The sides were pretty good. The chips and salsa were good as well. Super crunchy chips and fresh-tasting salsa all around. The manager also threw in some tortillas for us. They tasted really good - I think they were lightly fried. Surprisingly, the restaurant was totally empty on a Saturday at noon. Not sure why, but I hope they can see some more foot traffic! Prices are very reasonable. $9.50 for a plato and $3.85 for chips+salsa. To be totally honest, the central American food in Chicago beats Boston's on all levels, but for the Boston scene this restaurant is really good! I have a soft spot for Salvadoran food, but don't often get to eat it. BUT now that I've discovered the nearby Mi Tierra, I'll be back very soon! It was so nice to come across this unassuming restaurant in downtown Waltham. It has a decently sized dining area and bar with spaced out tables, and Youtube music videos that made it feel festive. I immediately jumped at the chance to get pupusas as part of the combo meal. They even have a cheese-free option with just pork. (There's also a just cheese option, and a combination of the two.) My dish was a smorgasbord of deliciousness, with some of the best refried black beans I've ever had, alongside rice (a bit too al dente ), a very lightly dressed slaw, caramelized plantains, and a freshly made guac that went perfectly with the thick homemade corn tortillas. It was so much food that I easily packed half of it to go. The Tall Man's dish (the No. 2, marinated pork and chile relleno) was also delectable. He got queso without chips on the side (actual slices of cheese, not the melted stuff) plus an order of guacamole, which he polished off pretty quickly. He said few words during the meal except for "These are the best beans!" So many gluten and dairy free options! So many more things to try. Yup, we'll be back. read more

I came to La Tierra recently. We had originally planned to go to another place nearby, but they were closed for Lunar New Year, and Mi Tierra was open. When we walked in, we were the only people in the restaurant. I think one couple came in, but other than that, it was just us, the cashier/server, and a few of the cashier/server's friends who were sitting at the bar area. We got the house guacamole, which had fairly large chunks of cilantro in it, which isn't my thing. The salsa that came with the chips was also interestingly watery--we weren't fans. I ordered the carne asada as my entree and it was overall ok. The meat was rather stringy for me, and it was more cooked through than I had requested. Our server was friendly. We sort of thought she was running the whole place and maybe even cooking I think I'll try other places on Moody Street next time. read more

Just a non-pretentious restaurant that offers good food. We ordered their mixed papusas, tamale, carne asada with homemade corn tortillas, and their fried plantains with crema. They offer good portions here especially for their tamale which was gigantic (especially for an appetizer item). It was also different from a Mexican tamale since it was steamed in banana leaves which I actually enjoyed more because it just gave the tamale a wonderful aroma and flavor. Coming from a native Central American family, having our traditional dinner plates are a must from time to time...moving to Boston i found my self with a shortage of those types of restaurant so finding one that i will like is a bit harder. Came across Mi Tierra while craving pupusas and living in Arlington driving to let say Lawrence or east Boston just doesn't make sense so i figured i try them out as the reviews are fair. We got there super late(9:30) kitchen closed at 10pm (so don't expect it to be busy at that time..service was great and welcoming, as it's a family ran business so you can tell they care about service. The Food: even tho my pupusas was just a minute to long on the grill so it was a bit toasted but the rest was delicious. Also order the "sopa de pata" which even tho it's not the same as moms cooking it tasted fairly close to what i like...my girl order the bistec and that was also really good and it comes with home style "rice and beans" (damm now i want some again) lol. This place is delicious!! I have experienced both dine in and takeout and continue to be happy with the food. I was especially impressed that the takeout dishes were restaurant-quality. I had an al pastor taco, pupusa, chile relleno, and guac torta. Everything was very fresh and nothing was mushy--the torta even remained crispy! Everything was wrapped in foil or an aluminum container, so it kept warm too. The tacos were double-wrapped in a corn tortilla and served with cilantro, onions, and a large slice of avocado. A fresh lime and salsa are provided on the side. The pork was very flavorful and did not seem super fatty. I had a revuelta (pork & cheese) pupusa. It was very mild and overall satisfying. It had bits of crusty cheese around the edge that had melted in the pan and fried up...yuummm. The chile relleno was a good-sized pepper, breaded, fried, and stuffed with cheese. It was ok, but could have used a little more flavor. I did appreciate that the breading was kept light; I've had some that were really heavily breaded and so you taste too much of the breading instead of the pepper and stuffing. The torta was probably my favorite. It consisted of a corn tortilla fried to a crisp with guacamole spread on top, and sprinkled with cilantro. It is so fresh! Earlier this month I went back to Boston with some of my college buddies and revisited our old haunts. My favorite local restaurant while in college was Mi Tierra, hands down. They made the best Guatemalan food I've ever tasted and had a very nice staff. After a ten year absence, I eagerly made my way back. The food was still just as good as I remembered! Located in suburban Waltham, MA, Mi Tierra inhabits a rather unassuming storefront. The inside isn't fancy, although they do have a deer head mounted on the wall and you can always catch a soccer game or a telenovela on one of the TVs. But let's be honest, no one goes here for the decor. The food is the real treat. For drinks we ordered a pitcher of sangria. It was more than enough to give 6 people two nicely sized glasses. The fruit in the sangria was fresh and firm and the perfect conduit for the sweet wine. If you are ever lucky enough to eat here, you MUST order the tamalitos as an appetizer. It's sweet corn dough shaped into a tamale and cooked to perfection. It's then served with fresh sweet cream and cheese. This appetizer is sweet and to me it could just as easily be a dessert. But I'm not one to fight customs so I will gladly have this at the start of the meal! I have never had anything else like this any place else and I crave these things more than I care to admit. They tasted just as good as I remembered. Sweet (pun intended!) nostalgia. For my entree I ordered the papusa plate. Papusas are like Guatemalan quesadillas, for lack of a better comparison. I chose the cheese papusa because I can't get enough of the melty gooey stuff they put inside. Papusas are traditionally served with a mild tomato sauce and a vinegar slaw. Not to be out shined by the papusas, the fried sweet plantain is always a welcome addition to the plate. Mi Tierra are experts at getting their plantains just right. Oh, and their beans are pretty stellar as well. Trust me, this is A LOT of food for one person. I honestly love this place with all my heart. I have so many good memories (food and otherwise) from this local joint. The best part was that when I walked back in after my ten year absence, the hostess remembered me. REMEMBERED ME. I guess I really did go there a lot of times! If you are ever in the greater Boston area, Mi Tierra is a must. read more

This small place in Waltham was very good. It's not on the best part of Moody Street, but it was easy to find. The atmosphere is non-pretentious (as someone else mentioned) and basically screams comfort. I ordered the papaya smoothie and it was AWESOME. Not all Latin American restaurants even offer papaya as a smoothie ingredient so it was a pleasant surprise. For dinner I ordered the Rib, Sausage, and Pork plate. I eat quite a bit and it was almost too much. The ribs were a tad bit overcooked, but solid. The sausage was actually average, but the pork filet was excellent. The plate comes with rice and refried beans, both of which were good. There is also a small veggie salad that might have too much mayo for some people ( I didn't mind). From the outside Mi Tierra may not look like much. But don't judge a book by its cover. This place is right around the corner from my house. I decided to try it one day after craving some good Spanish food. To my surprise the food was some of the best I ever had. I ordered the garlic pepper and butter chicken or pollo asado. The chicken was juicy but crispy and seriously flavorful. It comes with rice, beans and potato salad. A hefty meal, you will definitely take some leftovers home. As a Salvadorian I would consider myself a connoisseur of Pupusas... I have to say I was disappointed. Living near East Boston and Chelsea I always have good options for this kinda food. Working today in Waltham I was excited to get some Pupusas, Horchata and Dip. First the Pupusas, they lacked consistency. Some had meat on one side and barely anything on the other side. The queso dip just wasn't for me not the kinda cheese I would use in a dip but that's more my preference. The Horchata was delicious. I would give it 4 Rivas bites out of 10 bit since I don't have a bite I will just give it 3 stars. I hate doing it cause there my people and I want them to succeed but the Pupusas weren't great. read more

It's 1:30 PM on a Sunday. Your pupils feel like bullet holes and the slit of sunlight streaming under the plastic shade is like a blade to your skull. You are hungover. Why is the heat on 80 degrees? You feel around for your phone in the musky sweat-saturated comforter. You see several missed calls from Sarah and a text message that reads, "u left ur wallet in my sink. U around?" You can't possibly think of going anywhere without filling the angry void inside your stomach, dishonored by last night's dinner of Cuervo and a bag of Smartfood. You remember the emergency money from your mother you almost spent the other day on toilet paper. So you book a campus shuttle to take you to Mi Tierra in the next 15 minutes. As you enter the restaurant, the smell of corn chips and cervesa hits you like a tropical Guatemalan breeze. The portly waiter, smiles when you collapse into your regular booth. He immediately brings a horchata and a cup of coffee. A telenovela is on TV, which has a color leak or some pixel damage so it looks like all the characters are suffering gunshot wounds. The waiter knows you need the Huevos Rancheros and a papusas plate, but he asks you to order anyways. You also get the tamalitos--The steamed tubes of sweet corn pudding served with queso fresco will comfort your stomach. You eyes wander to the tacky posters of Guatemala and Jesus at the cross. You think of the salvation that will come with a side of refried beans and rice. In ten minutes, the papusas arrive, but before digging in, you watch the cheese between two fresh tortillas ooze into the complimentary fried plantains. Everything glistens with grease. Even your mouth glimmers with a smile tinged with regret but also longing. Your mind is at peace again, and between the bites of refried beans, you almost don't regret those embarrassing texts you sent to your ex at 3 AM, or whatever happened leading up to this blissful moment of scrumptious Guatemalan brunch. read more

This is the second of two places on Moody St. that sustained me. This is the most wonderful family-run restaurant out in the area. Don't judge it by its unassuming outside or its neighborhood (located in Waltham's "funeral home district", also home of the sickening Dragon Chef.) Some must haves: 1. The homemade cheese wheel that comes with most meals. 2. The sweet corn desert with cream 3. The papusa's--cheese filled tortilla's with a delicious hot sauce. 4. The black beans--words cannot quite do justice to the awesomeness of their black beans. They are the most sustaining and delicious form of bean I have yet to encounter. Came here for dinner last night with Katie G, and we were both thrilled with the place. It has an unassuming exterior, and a kind of dingy (but clean) interior, but don't let that deter you - the food is excellent and the staff (owners?) are super friendly. We started with the chips and guac, which was not only delicious, was an extremely large portion. Even splitting it, we were both pretty full before our meals arrived. We each had the pupusa platter - 2 pupusas, a whole plantain and rice and beans for $7.95. The pupusas were truly excellent and the sides were great as well. Granted, I've only had one other pupusa experience in my life, but these were far superior to those. My one complaint? They should have chicken or beef pupusas, so us non-pork-eaters have an option other than cheese! Thanks to our appetizer, we could each barely finish HALF of our dinners - guess I have a pre-made dinner for some night this week! I'm just going to preface by saying that I think this restaurant is better than what we ate on Thursday night. I've been here three times before and it has been delivery except for one time when I sat in and ate the gorditas. The gorditas here were pretty good but my husband and I waited a long time for our food and it was a weekend night. I've also ordered the pupusas here via delivery on the other two occasions that I visited and they were made quickly and they were delicious. This time we ended up ordering two burritos, one carne de res and the other one al pastor. My husband said he can't remember the last time he had a burrito that was so underwhelming. I had to agree with him because the burrito lacked any flavor in the meat and the other ingredients just didn't taste super fresh. I had a chunk of white rice in one bite of my burrito and no where else. The guacamole in our burrito was browning a bit and the sour cream was curdling because of the heat inside the burrito. It just wasn't appetizing which is unfortunate. It came with fries which I've never had with a burrito order in a Central American restaurant before but I thought they were good. This is truly authentic Guatemalan food. I am from Guatemala and I hadn't found an authentic Guatemalan restaurant before ( I have lived in the US for 14+ years). My favorite restaurant in Waltham. I live in Boston now and when a friend who used to live here came to visit from London, she requested a trip to Mi Tierra for dinner. Everything is so incredibly fresh and clearly cooked with care. For what you pay, you get fantastic ingredients. Plus I always have enough left over for another meal. Frankly, I don't really mind that the decor isn't anything special. I'd rather pay less and have a homey, family feeling restaurant. Maybe I'm a creature of habit but I always wind up having the same thing when I come here. Fresh Guacamole for an appetizer, then the carne asade or steak tacos, and finally the sweet corn for dessert. Plus stealing a few bits of fried plantains from a friend's plate. More than any other Latin American restaurant I've been to in Boston, the food at Mi Tierra has that indescribable "authenticity". It tasted like it came from a far-off kitchen, where the cooks use foreign ingredients and foreign techniques. I've never been to Guatemala, but I was taken back to my Mexican vacations, where people work magic with corn, lard, beans, chiles, and the sun. The guacamole spoke of what great things were to come. Simple, fresh and creamy but with some essence that lifted it to the realm of greatness. The chips were the flaw in the avocadoey ointment. Some cheap stale institutional wedges no doubt poured out of a giant bag. The tamale appetizer was masterful-- a light, moist, rich masa enveloping a perfectly-spiced shredded pork filling. The masa:filling ratio was a bit higher than expected, but I didn't even mind because the masa was so delicious. Then I got my fisherman's platter--broiled fish, shrimp, scallops and clams served with rice, sauteed vegetables, and a couple of thick, handmade tortillas. The seafood was so fresh and buttery and tasty, I knew after the first bite I would return to this restaurant. The sauteed veggies were well-seasoned and delicious, not the obligatory throwaway side. The rice was moist and cooked just right. The tortillas were substantial and toothsome and used more like bread as they were too thick to roll. But none of this prepared me for the side of refried black beans I ordered. It was presented as a smallish block of black mush on a plate. But these cooks! Heavenly was the only word I could think of. Like the masa, the black beans were light, moist, and rich. Addicting was the other word that eventually came to mind. After all that, the carne asada was so disappointing. Tough, chewy, overcooked, and flavorless. And the service is cordial but slooooow. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, and I could have overlooked the crappy chips and "laid back" service, but the terrible meat was just too much. read more
