    Cake and Eggs Breakfast
    Bailey B.

Really more like a 3.5 because I don't have any huge complaints, but I also probably wouldn't go out of my way to return here and so that makes it more comfortably in the realm of a 3 than a 4 for me. Came here after a doctor's appointment at around 11 on a Monday. There's not a ton of parking and the location is a little nondescript. I walked into a dimly lit but spacious setup. It's a little shopworn inside but seems clean enough. I was instructed to seat myself where I liked. The restaurant wasn't super crowded but the acoustics are such that sound carries and it was a little loud. I took a booth that wound up having a very uncomfy cushion, but I didn't want to confuse the staff by moving so I dealt with it. A waiter came by soon to drop off a menu. They serve breakfast all day and have some plate lunches. A lot of reviewers complained about the lunch options seeming canned or just not as fresh, so I decided I'd do a late breakfast/breakfast for lunch to ensure I got fresh food. They do a cake and eggs special that comes with scrambled eggs and pancakes. I got that with hash browns and bacon and a sweet tea to drink. The prices are reasonable here. My food came out to me quickly but not so quickly it didn't seem fresh. Overall, it was decent! My sweet tea wasn't super flavorful but it was thirst quenching. I think the best things were probably the pancakes; they weren't standout but just simple cakes cooked well and served hot. The scrambled eggs were fine too, though I wished for a little salsa or hot sauce to put on them. Hash browns were standard; a little under-crispy for me beneath the very crispy top, but I like them practically crunchy. One thing that was VERY crunchy was the bacon. I like my bacon cooked pretty well, but this was beyond that; I don't think I even finished it because it was just so crispy and hard. That was the low point. Again, nothing was really bad but simultaneously nothing really stood out, and given how far away from me this restaurant is I doubt I'll make a special trip. One thing that did stand out to me was a few dishes like chilaquiles and burritos on the menu. I noticed the wait staff were all speaking to each other in Spanish. I wonder if I missed out on the good stuff? Might be worth a try. If you're in the area, this'll do for a fast and adequately prepared local breakfast.

A very nice place to eat. The prices have stayed reasonable and the food is always hot and fresh. I had the pancakes on my last visit and I have to say that they were some of the best I've ever had.

The chicken fried steak was excellent, and I liked that they delivered the gravy on the side. Hash browns were perfectly cooked, and the scrambled eggs were A-OK. Service was very friendly, and the restaurant was clean. I'd be a regular if I lived in Madison. Cheers! RS

Outstanding service, delicious food and very clean (including the bathrooms). Expertly managed and well deserving of their reputation!

BLT Sandwich and Hash browns with onions and cheese.

Had some time to kill on a Friday morning before a doctors appointment. I had never been to Mia's and was in the area. Server: Andres, a pleasure to have met him. Wonderful personality. The restaurant has a certain charm about it. Several tables of little old men chatting and scheming. An old married couple that looks as if this is this is their routine place for Friday. The smell of coffee, clanking of cooking utensils hitting the cook top, and the soft hum of one big collective conversation underscored by classic Christmas music. I wasn't particularly hungry so I kept it simple with a BLT and Hash browns w/ onion and cheese. The hash browns turned out to be the star of the plate. A perfect crunch on the outside and a nice soft texture in the middle. Perfect southern Sunday morning breakfast on a Friday. The onions weren't over-powering and the cheese even had a noticeably good flavor. Owner: head chef, and he's not afraid to come out of the kitchen to say hello to his regulars. The owner used to run the entire cafe, but now he's in the kitchen and he wants it to stay that way There's something to be said about a place where the owner is on the grill. It means means that you're bound to have something that was made with love because you have to love to be on the grill. It's just a hard place to work, but as the owner it also gives you a greater measure of Quality Control. They are closed on Monday (I would be too if it were me) and they close after lunch.

Food tasted like they can it came in. They didn't even try to diagnose it. Also food came out to salty and cold.

Great home cooking and fantastic service. I had the chicken and dressing with sides. Always tastes good and daily specials are tasty.

Our food was great as well. Zero complaints on what we ate that day. Orange juice was also very good. Most of the wait staff was wearing very tattered clothing and the worst offender was the bus boy. Although he was working his tail off, he looked like he hadn't showed in several days and hadn't washed his clothes in a week. His bus tub was disgusting. As he was cleaning the table beside us, he put the tub in the table top and as I turned my head to look over I lost my appetite seeing the condition of the tub. To know that he put it on top of the table made me even more disgusted. Not only was he bussing tables but he was also taking plates of food to tables. I, personally, would not have accepted food from him because it's very unlikely he washed his hands after cleaning tables off. Our waiter was nice but he looked very sloppy. I realize I'm not at a white table cloth restaurant but at least make sure the serve staff looks presentable. We won't be back.

It's really nice to find a Mexican restaurant that actually feels authentic, because a lot of places around here just don't. I'll definitely be back!

Sunday after church hour long waits…read morefor a margarita and chicken, cheese, and rice after a long church sermon are somewhat of a ritualistic, ironic part of a typical southern weekend. However, I can swear by the fact that this proves my theory on Mexican food, in North Alabama at least, being worshipped only if it tastes like cardboard and has no seasoning. This is not my first time at Phil's, either location, and every time it is always unremarkable. But this time, it was inexcusably bad. My fiancée's margarita tasted like water with lime in it. There was no triple sec or tequila taste, though she did say she felt a little buzz from it. So clearly was there but, to what cost? $9 for a tasteless marg is a little high. The queso had legitimately no flavor. Not even cheese. Just like table cream. It even had peppers in it but you could not taste them. This was the time where we questioned if we had caught COVID in the 10 minutes we had been in there and lost our sense of taste. I quickly learned this wasn't the case when I tasted the salsa which had the flavor of body odor and canned tomatoes. The chips, however, nice and crispy. So a plus there. Get the chips. Don't dip them. We split the chicken fajitas and the 3 minutes it took to come out after we ordered it, should be taken as a sign that it's not going to be great. The grill marks felt laughable as the chicken had no texture or flavor of something that was grilled. It, along with the peppers and onions, had a slimy texture and, again, absolutely no flavor. It seemed to me that this was a classic case of either Sysco's Finest or Sous Vide cooking. The rice on the side also had no flavor but the beans actually had a great taste, but a few felt under cooked and slightly crunchy. The stand out was the home made tortillas which we thick and fluffy. This made me question why, if you're going to the effort of making tortillas and chips in house, why cut corners on your MAIN part of the meal? As for the service, it wasn't bad but the waiter had to be asked multiple times for refills and was very inattentive to our table while favoring who seemed to be regulars behind us. Phil's has the essence of "what a Mexican restaurant tastes like in Norway if opened by a British person who had Mexican food once on a work trip to Idaho." Decor that's trying too hard, food that has no seasoning, and service that is lacking.
