Like Michael's, despise this location. Below is a copy of a complaint I wrote to the corporate office regarding an incident I recently experienced. I have yet to hear from the manager or the corporate office. Today I visited the Michaels at 14370 Ocean Gate Avenue in Hawthorne, California. I have visited this store many times over the years as I enjoy the products and creative inspiration. Today my purpose of visiting was to return an item and purchase a different item. Upon arriving, I noticed signs that said only register 1 was available for returns. I stepped in line to return my 1 item and began waiting. I was the third person in line. The person directly in front of me was returning numerous (15+) items on several receipts, which proved to be a lengthy process. I waited about 20 minutes in line before being served. I am not disappointed because the woman in front of me had many items she needed to return. I am irritated because as a customer, I expect that I can walk into your store and be acknowledged and assisted. From my view in line, I counted seven employees. One was persistently ringing at the cash register and another was working on returns. Camille, who I assume to be the store manager, was also occasionally working on ringing and other duties (getting change and such) however, never took notice of the situation. Additionally, I spotted three other employees who seemed to be restocking shelves and organizing. Having worked in a retail store, I understand that customers are to be assisted first regardless of what other task needs to be completed. My one item took one minute to return and not one employee, not even the manager noticed or helped. When I stepped up to the register I did not even receive a "thank you for waiting" or any greeting at all. I have been a customer of Michaels since I was a young child. I paint, teach elementary school, and plan events. I often buy many items for my classroom and events and would like to continue to use Michaels as a source of supplies. However, I am very discouraged and am not sure I will visit this particular store again. read more

First time here, pleased with this visit. I frequent Michaels store often, especially when I'm in a pinch for things I'd usually order online or from specialty shops. The store is on the larger side, seemed clean/organized and (most of) the staff was friendly. One of my favorite stores!! I find everything and need and beyond!! The staff is friendly and helpful. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the bathroom!!!! I almost threw up when I went inside. I would not recommend this store. The curb side pick up and in store pick up are nonexistent. No one picks up and if you push the button in the store no one responds. The store is crowded, no monitoring of how many people are inside. If you are not concerned about COVID19, this is the place for you. read more

What can you say about a craft store? We were shopping here for my daughters science project and found everything that we needed. I think the only thing that upset me was the prices. $20 for a styrofoam ball... really? When you can catch a sale, things aren't so bad. I'm currently on a marathon crochet session making baby blanket squares... and I needed more baby yarn to make the multicolored squares that make up a full blanket. Enter my nearest Michael's located at the Ocean Gate Shopping Center at Rosecrans and Ocean Gate. I shopped here during my lunch hour. I don't know if this location is bigger or what, but it seems as though they have more yarn on sale here than the two stores I normally shop at home. My haul was a baby white, baby blue, baby pink and one Caron brand ombre in baby colors. I found everything I was shopping for - yeah! There was a line to check out, but three cashiers were waiting on customers, so the line moved pretty quickly. read more

Best arts & crafts store that's hasn't been closed out of business due to online shoppers.

my craft of choice is cross stitching. yes, i know you remember your mom or grandma or lonely great aunt bertha with her 25 cats doing it, and maybe you even did it once as a kid too. Unfortunately since most people can "remember" somebody doing it, and don't really KNOW anybody who CURRENTLY does it, it doesn't get much attention and this shows in Michaels' selection for cross stitching supplies I design my own patterns, and so i depended A LOT on Michaels' selection of DMC threads. BAD IDEA. they hardly EVER restock their threads. apparently (according to a manager i talked to) they have to wait until the entire selection (of over 400 colors) is almost completely depleted before they order a new supply. I hit roadblocks SO MANY TIMES on my pictures because they just never got the colors I needed back in stock. I have a picture i started in 2004(!!!!) that i couldn't finish until I discovered the Jo-anns in Santa Monica (DMC HEAVEN). And just recently, they cut their cross stitching stock dramatically and moved it all the way to the far back corner WITH the random hodge podge of trash that is on sale. I basically ONLY go here now when i have a coupon or am absolutely desperate for a color, or supply and want to come immediately after work which is close by. And really, the reason why i will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER AGAIN use this particular stores framing department: they cut my picture when they were framing it. It is really hard to explain without showing the picture, but they completely destroyed the integrity of the picture i was having framed. a picture i spent literally hundreds of hours sewing. and i discovered that they cut into my picture when i had to have them take it out of the frame because they framed it completely wrong in the first place. they eventually reframed my picture, did it for free and it looks... acceptable, even fine to basically everybody else, but I just can't trust them now and i get a little bit angry every time i look at it! my mom uses them still, and she things it was just a fluke but they'll never get my business back and i warn everyone. read more

This place was pretty cool to find cheap materials to make my daughter a Wordgirl costume for halloween. I spent less than $10 to get most of the materials, where buying a costume would have cost in the $30's. There's usually a line, but they keep it moving. Now I just need to get the stuff to make my Captain Huggyface suit. read more

While Michaels may have just about everything under the sun for arts and crafts, not sure if it's worth the hassle. It is really difficult to find items or even general categories in this store. I wander aimlessly until I can find an employee to courteously point me in the right direction. I think they know that there is a problem finding items since there are colorful, handmade signs hanging from the ceiling with arrows pointing to different popular categories. The line in the store is always ridiculously long, no matter what time of day. Case in point, today I got into line and counted 21 people in front of me. Now, some people were together, but there were only 2 cashiers open. By time I was next in line, I counted 32 people behind me. 4 stars for the selection. 2 stars for the time wasted wandering around or standing in line. read more

Needed some custom framing for some artwork i had on parchment and also some frames for some other pics i had. I signed up for the Michael's reward program and its worthwhile because u get 20% discount coupon for signing up among other coupons. Anyway, I came in with an idea of what I wanted to put for framing. Luckily Liz from frames was extremely helpful in showing how wrong I could be and showed us several options and color way that better suited our artwork. On top of that she was trying to save us some money on options by suggesting cheaper but nice frames and glassware. She even helped us with finding other framing needs for pictures I had. Feeling pretty lucky that we got her, she was super helpful and very nice even though our little one was losing his patience from sitting for more then 5 minutes. I had forgotten Michael's has such a large variety of products. If you can't think of what store has what you are looking for, I suggest starting with Michael's. Only two things that are disappointing (for me). Many items are very pricey. I wasn't impressed with one of the staff members on this visit (my first to this location). We asked for assistance. He took us to where he thought the item we were looking for was. When we saw that it was not what we were looking for, I looked up to ask if it could be in another part of the store and he was gone! He could have stuck around for at least 5 seconds. One other thing that is great about this location is the variety of other department stores in the immediate area. read more

Today I was in this store to pickup some supplies for my craft business. I shop in this store several times a week. Most of the employees are helpful, but some of them have an attitude like you're bothering them if you ask a question, or when you are checking out. Today was THE worst treatment to date. There was an issue at check out with the card reader. And the girl that was checking me out spoke to me like I was stupid that I didn't know how to deal with THEIR system issue. I've never been so humiliated and angry at the same time!! The managers at this store need to have a sit down and review with their employees, that the customers should be treated with respect. They wouldn't have their jobs if it weren't for the customers!!! And good customer service comes from the top down!!! What in the world has happened to Customer Service? Unfortunately, it's too far to drive to the next closest Michael's or I would be shopping there from now on. I love anything having to do with being creative, so going to this store for me is like taking my niece to a candy store. The selection of crafts and specialty baking supplies is pretty good here, especially if you are a bit of a procrastinator (as I can be sometimes), and need to get supplies to make/bake the night before. Their ribbon selection is getting better and they do always have sales going on and coupons circulating I also love Michaels craft classes and they even have classes for kids... which my niece loves too! Only downside is sometimes it can be quite hard to find someone to help you search for an item, besides that everyone is always friendly and helpful. read more

I've shopped here for years and have taken many classes for myself and have also put my kids in classes here throughout the years. I really don't have any complaints except for the filthy restrooms. OMGosh! I have not seen the ladies restroom clean in years. I have asked employees about this matter and they always say that management won't pay to have them cleaned. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I would not take any classes for myself or my children just because of this. It's that BAD!! Trust me! Next time you go in, look for yourself. Horrible service from the checker named Solomon. You'd think during this busy holiday season they'd be trained to be a little cheery. Store staff should always be helpful. I asked him s simple question when we were paying. "Is the wrapping paper on sale also"? His reply "I have no idea" Whatever happened to "I'm not sure, let me check for you" Then we asked if we could split the check onto 2 cards. He said "I'm not even sure you can do that" I told him we do it all the time. He said "Well I don't know how" No help whatsoever. This Michaels is conveniently located right by my work. I needed some beads to fix some missing ones and they had exactly what I needed. It has everything your typical store has. Perhaps not as organized and clean (old) as other stores but complete nonetheless. Also if I don't feel like perusing the aisles I just ask a helpful employee and they helped me right out. I just wanted to write a review about my experience. I planned on buying a Cricut Explore Air as a birthday present for my Fiance. I started by shopping around online and Amazon, but I figured, I love Michaels and the atmosphere, I should just grab one down the street. Even though it cost more than the other businesses. I called in to see if they had one in stock. I was put on hold for about 5 min which was not really that long, but when the person came back to the phone, I asked if they one i stock. The person on the phone had no idea what a Cricut is. Really?? A craft store? You don't know what a Cricut is? She then said they do not sell them. I insisted that Michaels do sell them (I researched), she put me back on hold for another 5 min, yay, then a manager came on the line. I asked if he had any Cricuts in stock, he checked and he said he did. Finally, getting somewhere. Now I am headed to the store, and when I get there, he goes to the back and grabs one. I have no idea what other accessories that I would need to purchase, so I ask what else would he recommend. Of course, he does not know. No idea. He proceeds to ask an associate and she says she does not know either. (Wow very helpful, they did not try to find anyone else to help me, nor did they attempt to look around with me in the Cricut section). He then says this can not be returned, it is a final sale. Why did he have to tell me that? I was not planning on returning it, as I know it was a long awaited gift to my fiancé. The way he said it as he looked me up and down, he said "Yeah our store does not make any money on these things, so yeah no returns." Why did he insist that I needed to know that? I wanted to buy a whole bunch of stuff to go with it. I feel like he lost a lot from my sale. I could have just walked out and ordered online like my first mind. But I really wanted to get it that day. Anyway I purchased the Cricut Explore Air despite the lack of assistance and attitude of the workers. If I could not return my item (as the manager made sure I knew clearly that "You can not return this!) why does my receipt say that I can? I spent $294.29, how does a store not make money off of this? And how does a store with such a large purchase not provide adequate assistance? I usually Yelp my reviews, but this one bothered me so much, that I figured I would write an email instead. So I wrote corporate an email. But I received no response.
