Worst hot dog ever & that's without even taking a bite. Requested the bun be HOT. it was barely warm to the touch. I requested the sandwich be put on a new bun. The new one was exact the same, barely warm. The man making the sandwich said it's because the condiments are cold. Apparently he thought I was a total moron. Why would the condiment temperature affect the temp of the outer part of bun? Of course inside will be cooled off immediately. If they want to know what a bun temp should be, management needs to check out SuperDawg. Michael's has gone down in quality since sold a few years ago. Will not patronize again and will encourage my friends & neighbors to find an alternative restaurant also. read more

We arranged for Michael's to cater our son's wedding reception. We couldn't have done any better! The food was great, there was plenty of it, and the service was wonderful! They were super easy to work with during the planning process and really delivered on their promises. All of our guests raved about the food and we were greatly pleased that everyone was happy! The skirt steak sandwich is good, but the sandwich should be bigger for it's price. 12.99 for the special which includes the sandwich and fries, but no beverage is a bit steep. I spent an additional $3-$4 on an order of cheese fries. I did not like the cheese sauce that it came with, therefore wasting the fries entirely. Not worth returning. read more

I work at a small Chicago high school and we recently used Events by Michael's to cater the Senior Prom. We were so happy with the results every step of the way! Laurie, our coordinator, was readily available with great advice and went out of her way to make the night special for our students while sticking to our fairly tight budget. We decided on the simple "Char Bar" option and had the teriyaki chicken, burgers, famous cheddar fries, and salad. The food was delicious, and Ben and his team of caterers made the evening run smoothly. With years of experience in this business, they were friendly, attentive, and professional and left the venue spotless when the night was finished. I'm shocked how absolutely terrible this was. I actually brought my food back to counter and just left! Waisted $21! Ordered 4 hotdogs I was the only person in line. Waited 15 minutes for "boiled dogs"! AFTER some kid who had no idea how to make a hot dog made them 1 at a time...THEN he put down fries to cook! Yup, dogs sat their getting cold! I was taking food to hospital patient so asked for double bag- but before I left I opened 1 hot dog, just to check... it was ICE COLD, not even warm! I really hate bashing on yelp but the situation I was in definitely calls for it. Food was OK nothing spectacular; food gets 3 stars. Costumer service on behalf of the manager gets NONE. The employees there are working their butts off and deserve some credit. If there is an issue with an employee over serving salad toppings it should be brought up in the back area, not in front of costumers. Poor Jesus was told he needs to go back on hotdogs and off salad bar because he did it wrong again. No one should belittle their employees in front of a costumer. Not to mention my family and I didn't even have an appetite after the manager let us know how the salad we bought wouldn't look like that next time because it was made in correctly. Well my aunt has been going there for years and then said 'it always looks like that'. Manager then said 'well I want a paycheck and salads like that make us loose money' ...TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE TO SAY TO A CUSTOMER! If that is the case make your menu out to say additional charge for additional toppings. By the way loose money??? We spent over $40 on 3 salads! Cheesecake factory is cheaper then that. We then sat down feeling awkward. Noticed my sister salad was missing steak and aunts was missing chicken. We didn't dare go back to the counter at this point. Even though it was extra for the meats. The poor employee making the salads was probably upset/ embarrassed by his manager calling him out in front of everyone. Never returning after seeing how employees are being treated and how costumers have to hear about the restaurants issues. I use to order 2 times a week, for many people and myself. In the last 2 months I've ordered my usually order of grill chicken salad which is not cheap, about $14 each time. They keep on forgetting the grill chicken, I called to complain they said they were sorry and we're going to send me a $5 gift card for the inconvenience. Never happened. Michael's is truly an institution - huge part of my childhood, and I was always so jealous of my friends who had their birthday or bar mitzvah parties there! So disappointed! Ordered at work for delivery with my co-workers. My burger was RARE when I asked for well done. The cheddar on the cheesefries was rubbery and cold. The hotdog had no flavor and had different condiments than asked for. The delivery was fast though and the mozzarella sticks were good. Paid so much money and was excited for a nice meal to find I couldn't even eat the burger! I would not recommend this place to anyone. I will not be eating there in the future. Like many locals who have frequented Michael's for years, I was looking forward to the remodeling of the stuck in the nineties restaurant. Well.... their intentions may have been good but, in actual day to day functioning, confusing, frustrating and their prices have gone up! As you enter the restaurant, you're not sure if you should go straight if you're ordering carry out or do you take a left to the 2 registers by the wall??? I decided to follow my instinct aka "follow the crowd" and went left. There are 2 cashier's taking your order at the same time. UGH! So you are vocally competing with the other diner who is trying to order their meal at the same time as you are. You end up shouting and constantly saying "What"? Not good. One of my favs to get is the medium Greens Salad. It used to be the best salad value for $7.50. About one year before they remodeled, they raised the price of the salad to $8.50. Ok, no biggie. But, after the remodel, the new price is $9.50! I was a member of their frequent Buyer Club thru Spring Rewards but, they have discontinued that relationship. All my points, which I was super close to a $10 reward, got wiped away. The new decor includes an entire wall with a red, black and white mural with renderings of local amenities. It's only OK, could've done a little nicer decorating with slightly warmer tones. read more

Since they have changed to the new line and ordering system, the orders are slow to make, incorrect and you have many people waiting for food and standing over the miscellaneous items as they're placed on the trays. We used Michael's for the rehearsal dinner before the wedding. We had the best experience. The food and desserts where outstanding. The event planners Laurie and her colleague Rachel went above and beyond to ensure perfection. I screwed up on the amount of people, short by 30 and Rachel didn't blink and put out more food. The sound system and tv's worked perfectly for the montage. There wasn't anything that could not be done if asked. We were able to order food for Vegans, gluten free, lactose intolerance and anything else that needed to be accommodated. A pleasure and true professionals. I recommend this venue to anyone. In summary, "Cafeteria food at sit down prices." They charge $4.69 for a mediocre cafeteria-esque soup! What a disappointment! We visited yesterday (10/21/2011) and I got that gut feeling not only were we getting ripped off but also the food was sub-par. As I was walking back to the table twice after ordering to remember things that we didn't get (no butter included with bread, and later we need a salad lid, soup lid, and bag), I thought to myself "This is cafeteria food at sit-down prices." Too busy for who-knows-what reason. We were shocked when we ordered for 3 people and the total was $31, but wait there's more! We ordered: -2 diet Dr. Pepper sodas (flat, not that cold, and not fizzy, and they didn't even taste that Dr. Peppery!) $1.99 + $1.99 -1 chocolate milk for son, $1.59, (not filled up all the way) -2 medium size chicken noodle soups $4.69 + $4.69 each (First off, WTH on the price! And they tasted like they were straight out of a vat of premade soup.) -2 4-topping salads ($4.99 + $4.99), they fail to tell you that there's absolutely no meat choices to choose from with the "Small Greens" option. We were hungry! We wanted chicken or something on top. It turns out "tomato" counts as 1 topping, "croutons" are 1 topping. They were so stingy I had to say can I have a "1/2 cheese and a 1/2 egg". Embarrassing RIPOFF. Then we got desperate and added chicken, another $3 please! They're very stingy on the salad dressing. -1 plain hot dog for son, $3.19 (We've tasted better buying and boiling from the store!) Our total was $34...For this money we could have been waited on at Baker's Square including a tip! Then the experience began. We sat in the back...screaming kids, too many kids with 1 parent to 4-5 kids ratio. What hell. If I wanted this atmosphere I'd eat in a daycare. Keep your screamers, climbers, don't-know-how-to-eaters at home, please! Then we went to the bathroom, I commented how dark it was in the women's. My son, 5, said "It's a cave!" Seriously with the $34 I gave you for mediocre food, turn up the darn lights! Thank you - we're never coming back - I rather check out anything else around there: Subway, Noodle place, ANYTHING. The best. As a HP native, I basically grew up on this place. Nowhere in Chicago chops a better salad with better ingredients, or makes a better hot dog and fries. I sometimes have a love/hate relationship with the fact that all of the North Shore shares their love of this place (it's kind of a place to "see and be seen" around town) but it's worth it for how great the food is! I'm in Highland Park fairly often for work and every time I get in my first stop is always Michael's. This place has always been slammed every time I have stopped by, no matter the time of day or night. The prices are super affordable and the selection is huge. They also boast a whole lot of seating. I can't speak to too much on their menu because I order the same thing every time I go (why mess with perfection right?). The Chicago dog and cheese fries, cheese on the side, that' the way to go. They have a wide variety of dogs and burgers with an impressive assortment of toppings. You let 'em know what you want piled on when you order. Go nuts! But make sure you're hungry because it's a huge helping of food! Did I mention the cheese fries? So. Freaking. Good. On my last visit I noticed that most folks standing in line didn't even have to glance at the menu, they are such long standing customers they know what they want as soon as they walk in the door. I equate Michael's with my childhood. It is a highland park staple that consistently serves good food. Michael's has my all time favorite cheese fries. They are definitely the best on the North Shore. They have an extensive menu and lettuce wraps for low-carbers. The salads are amazing and HUGE. Definitely at least 2 meals. Parking is really difficult, but all of downtown HP is the same way. The lines are long during traditional lunch and dinner hours, but it is well worth the wait. We used Michael's catering services for our "back yard BBQ party" and they were outstanding! The food was out of this world delicious! The customer service, delivery, and presentation was exceptional. Our guests still can't stop raving about the food. We had the jumbo dogs, turkey burgers and Italian beef, as well as Caesar salad. Everything was top notch quality and every detail was thought of. My family and friends are simply impressed by Michael's experience and we are definitely going to use them for future catering needs. keep in mind, that if you order a hot dog with "everything", it's chicago style but they add sauerkraut. i don't know why. get the onion rings. they are deliciously crispy and taste like they're hand battered. at $3.19 they're a bit expensive, but worth it!!!!! also, i'm so glad someone decided to open up a yogen fruz inside. what a nice dessert option. get the acai-blueberry froyo, it's DELICIOUS. i'm not a big fan of their regular flavor yogurt, but i prefer mine a little tarter like berry chill or pinkberry. i would also recommend their smoothies and their mix-in yogurts (strawberry and mango!) -- they use a different yogurt that's frozen in a block, and sometimes it can taste a little freezer burny. read more

My brother and I were thinking about what to eat. We ruled out a few cuisines and he asked if I would like a Chicago Red Hot. I love those, so I thought that this was a good suggestion. So off to Michael's we went. But when we got on line and I saw the menu, I changed my mind. Those burgers they were grilling looked fantastic. I asked my brother what he was having. He had already decided on a double char burger. So I decided on that too, except I added cheddar cheese to mine and asked to have mine medium rare. Now ordering a burger medium rare is almost an impossibility. I am not sure why the grill guys always seem to sway toward well done, but they seem to do that. Maybe it's a health thing and they don't want to take any chances. But I was really pleased when I bit into my perfectly cooked medium rare double char burger. It was smoky and flamed on the outside and pink and still tasty and juicy on the inside. These guys got it perfect. Lettuce, tomatoes and raw onions were ordered. Check. They too were fresh and tasty. Now the burger was huge. I don't know what size patties Michael's uses, but after eating the double, I would guess they are at minimum a third of a pound and maybe even half a pound each. This was a monster burger. Burgers never seem big enough to me, but this double was a challenge. We also ordered an order of Onion rings and an order of grivinas to split. They too were perfect. I don't know if they use chicken fat to make their grivenas, but whatever they do use is probably related to some addictive drug, because it was hard to stop eating them. The venue is simple and set up for kids, families and the high school crowd. The place is attached to a large parking lot, so parking is easy and convenient. This place is in Highland Park, so I was not surprised to see a Ferrari parked in that lot. Prices are on the high side, but the value is definitely there, so one can ignore the high prices. Michael's is a North Shore institution, period. I've been coming here since I was a kid and it is as awesome now as it was back then. My favorite thing about this place is that they have sauerkraut which is, hands down, the best hotdog topping ever ... and for some reason other dog stands don't have it. If you are a city dweller I am sure that there are better dog stands out there for you, in the city. But Michael's is a piece of North Shore history, and no matter what one may say, it will always be the best dog and hold a special place in this suburbanite's heart. read more
