I have found myself crafting gifts rather than grabbing the much more efficient and logical choice of a gift card and so I have been wandering around the aisles of the local Michael's more and more often. A crafting mecca is great in theory, however, more often than not, Michael's are disorganized and under-staffed. This location is unfortunately not the exception.
It is located in the seedier part of the Natomas Shopping Center- in between the Ross and the Payless. For some reason, there is a lack of parking spots in this part of the shopping center and whenever I find myself at the Michael's, I find myself resorting to Sac State Parking Wars: Natomas Edition but that is not the fault of Michael's but the developer. It's meant as a reminder to give yourself extra time when going to the store as I always find myself behind schedule when I am running errands at Michael's.
For the store itself, it is always in a state of disarray. It seems as though the staff is constantly half-way through rearranging the store. The staples of the store- painting supplies, frames, and beads are a constant but the area to the right when you walk in is always in a constant flux of reduced or sale items from a mix of different holidays and seasons past. When you do go searching for an item, there is a 80-20 chance that it is stocked in the right area and an even lower likelihood that the item is in stock. When I was working on a DIY chandelier, I was in the store on a nearly biweekly schedule and had was constantly searching for items that the clerk said was in stock according to their computer but was not on the shelf in the beading aisles. When I asked her about the disparity, she said that the store suffers from a high rate of shoplifting and so what the computer registers as in stock is not always what is on the shelf. After multiple visits to the store that resulted in zero purchases due to stocking issues, I started to call ahead to see if the product was in stock and on the shelf. I tried to call ahead to see if they could locate the beads beforehand and was often left on hold for half an hour while they were searching. I gave up on the phone calls and would just drive over to find no beads. In the end, I just ordered the beads "in bulk" so they would put the items on hold for me once they arrived. You have to pay for them in advance but at least you know that it's going to be there in the store when you get there.
If you do end up finding the product that you wanted, you now have to face the mind-numbingly long wait at the registers. Without fail, there is always one (maybe two on an especially lucky day) cashiers working at the front all of whom have difficulty with the registers. I'm not sure if their system is crap but be aware that there will be a wait. Surprisingly, despite an always long "search" period for your item, you will always be in line longer.
All in all, Michael's is the crafting equivalent of the DMV: both offer services/supplies that you can only get at one place and both will give you an ulcer unless you go in knowing that it is going to be a long wait. Despite all of this location's failings, you will still find me here on any given weekend as it's the only place that offers such a wide selection of products (in theory). If you are willing to take a drive, the Michael's in Woodland is superb- clean, well-stocked, and a completely functional and helpful staff but if you are stuck in Sac, this is your only option. Good luck. read more
