    Cucumber Salad

Another successful Rotary Event catered by this wonderful small business. Tony and Issa continue to provide warm and outstanding customer service. They are excellent at suggesting the right amount of food based on your headcount, generously pack the trays full, and give you a good price. We had 15 folks who devoured a feast of chicken shawarma, falafels, cucumber & tomato salad, baba ghanoush, hummus, lavash bread, pickled veggies, tahini and hot sauce. Everyone left with full and happy bellies.

The falafel is reason enough alone to stop in! After splitting a dozen with my partner yesterday I'm still thinking about them! The plates were delicious too and came with a huge serving! The grocery selection was pretty large for the space too! We found a lot of staples I needed: lavash, pita, tahini, pomegranate molasses, labneh, and some good olive oil. Also a saffron and cardamom tea that looked good that I'm now obsessed with. It's so perfectly spiced and creamy. The staff were all very friendly and helpful! Highly recommend checking this place out!! We will definitely be back soon

In February, we ordered a lot of food from Mid East Market for a teacher and staff appreciation luncheon at a nearby school hosted by PTA. We ordered big platters of falafel, shawarma, hummus, baba ganoush, rice, pita, tabbouleh, steak, chicken and more--everything was sooo good! The portions were generous, and everyone loved it. The only thing we ran out of? Business cards--because so many teachers and staff wanted to know where the food was from so they could go again. Thank you, Mid East Market!

Holy falafel moly, Mid East Market is officially my fave falafel (green) spot in the Bay Area. SO sad it's all the way up in San Bruno, but I'll drive there anytime for their homemade falafel. Get yourself some tasty, Palestinian falafel and shawarma after you finish a gorgeous San Bruno hike. Mid East Market is easy to spot, right on the corner off of busy El Camino Real. There is street parking but also a few like 4 spots for customers. They're separated into a deli/hot food stand and if you decide to walk through the door on your right, it's the actual market/bodega. In the spirit of anti-genocide and Free Palestine, we bought some Palestinian olive oil for $13 which had a light, fruity and floral flavor to it in a 1L glass bottle as recommended by the store owner. I love using it to dip into my Palestinian hummus or some fresh pita. For the deli and hot food stands, they sell fresh meat which is at an affordable price. The butcher grinds the ground meats in the store in front of you, so that was cool to see. Plus, I was today years old when I learned about Kufta, aka mixed and ground up meat mix with various spices! We didn't end up buying any of the meat, but we did order a lamb plate and falafel plate entrees and a container of their homemade hummus from the mini fridge. SO worth it. Their saffron rice (yellow) was SO tasty, it was flavorful and we couldn't get enough. The lamb was flavorful and not gamey, we don't usually go for lamb, but this dude knows exactly how to grill and season it. The fresh salata, cucumber and tomato salad as well as their pickled radish and pickles were the perfect sides to cut through the heavy meats. Their hummus I can't stop drooling over, and those falafel tasted hella good in the air fryer the next day. You only have to wait like 10 mins for your hot food, might as well take a peek next door at their market to see if you want any Pali goods. The kind men working the shops are helpful and patient too. I swear I stared at their giant basket of fresh homemade falafel, and the sesame seeds were SO huge I could see it from the other side of the room. May Palestine be loudly, proudly free. End the Israeli oppression, and support all Palestinian products and businesses! Let's boost Mid East Market yelpers!

Someone had recommended I try this place, and I'm glad they did. This is a small market, and in the building next to it, there is take out and a meat counter available. This is a very casual place. Friendly service, if you tip you'll notice even bigger smiles from the cook behind the counter. If you're ordering take out, the portions are fresh and generous. It looks like everything is made to order. I ordered falafels, and they were made right away. One tip is that after you order, you pay next door at the grocery store, and come back for your food. If you want to eat there, there is one table. Primarily this is a take out place for the food. And the food was fresh and delicious.

Talk about a hidden gem! I've passed this convenient store/market up so many times without thinking twice. Well, I finally thought twice and made a stop, and so far, I've made several stops here already and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon! They're pushing out some delicious food in the unassuming little deli area. I've tried the combo plate, the falafel plate, the chicken shawarma gyros, and I've gotten a few things inside the convenient market. All amazing!

According to the company's website they've been in business since 1967 starting out as selling BBQ pork out of a small shop near where the current Hsin Tung Yang's Wanhua store is located in Taipei. Whenever I am in Taiwan I always have to stop and get a box of their famous Pork Jerkey. As Ken K. said in his review...its too bad you can't bring it back to the US. Although last year my sister accidently brought back some in her suite case...sneaky! I have been eating their sachima cake treats since I can remember. Sachima are basically the Chinese version of rice crispy but made with flour and instead of vanilla and marshmallow its made with sugar and sesame seeds. The Taiwanese version is similar to the Cantonese version where it is slightly sweet. I've had sachima by other companies but no one can make them like Hsin Tung Yang. Their sachima is sticker and more moist....keeping your dentist in business for years to come.... They also make lots of other Taiwanese snacks such as peanut brittle and dried tofu snacks. I think their products tends to be superior over their competitors because I think they use better quality ingredients and they stick to tried and true products. This location in San Francisco was established in 1979 and is where Hsin Tung Yang's US jerky is made from. As others have pointed out it doesn't taste the same. Its sad but true. However you can find a majority of their products online for purchase, as well as your friendly neigbhorhood A$N $upermarket, be it mom & pop, or big name chain like Marina, Lion, or 99. But buyer beware. Most of the HTY food products are mostly made in the USA. Nothing wrong with that, but they will not taste anywhere near as good as the equivalents of the HTY offerings that are made in Taiwan (especially PORK and BEEF related products, like jerky or preserved sausage....I guess a well represented male organ shaped object if you will). You will find a Hsin Tung Yang in TPE international airport (Zhong Zhen airport in Taoyuen County), although you'd have to be a real ass smuggla (or butt pirate) to get any meat products through the gates upon arrival in the US. So just stick with safe and ok products. For what it is worth, the HTY brand of their Plum Drink (Gwei Hua Suan Mei Tang) is half decent, even though it doesn't come close to the kind in Taiwan. About $2.20 at your A$N supermarket if they have it, brown bottle with Chinese and English characters.
