Every staff here is so nice , I appreciate and love the food pantry every Monday and Thursday I would love for them to be a non biased I was in line my number was going to be 55 but some how some lady ahead received number 32 then another time with the car drive the man hanging out the spots was saving a spot for a family member and I was suppose to go wait out by the gate but since their family member wasn't coming I got the last number before parking by the gate .... They are nice people but that is just unfair that they pick and choose spot someone non biased should be handing out the numbers instead of. read more

It's fun to stay at the YMCA but even better to know they have a walk up covid testing as well as treatment partnership with Flow testing... Was super easy to setup via QR code ahead of time and in-person. I did a quick not too deep nose swab and had my results in less than 24 hrs in time for some Thanksgiving and weekend celebration with close friends and some of their older relatives. Aside from having these healthy and safety options the YMCA of Van Nuys has a massive parking lot, great swimming indoor swimming facility, good gym, friendly staff and lots of great programs year around that are really starting to pick up slowly but surely. read more

I have had a membership here for over a year & what started out as a decent experience turned out to be a disappointing one. When we first started coming here I have never experienced a bad situation here, the place and bathroom seemed to be as clean as it can be (this location is out dated) the lady that was working here always kept the women's bathroom clean then there's a new lady within the last couple of months & just not as clean as the previous one. But that's not where it gets bad, the front staff. Wow, let's say these young kids they have hired are simply rude & a BAD LOOK for this location. A blonde headed girl by the name DIANA who I have been seeing for the last couple of months here is not friendly, she doesn't acknowledge kids or members who walk in & if you approach her to ask a question she gives you attitude and no eye contact. Another not so friendly employee is an asian looking boy who was also recently hired. There was only one friendly young man & I never got his name but he's been there awhile & he looks hispanic and asian or may just be hispanic. Anyway, thank you to him for always being helpful & kind. Shame on this location for having these youngins as the face of your location. Such a disrespectful employee & for that reason I will be terminating my membership here. Not worth the money for this kind of experience! The gym area is small, outdated machines & it seems to be the same guy in there all the time who walks in and changes all the tv's in there for whatever reason & a little creepy to be honest. Never been to the pool so can't comment! Basketball court is old, during the summer it's hot they don't run the ac & during the winter when it rains there's always some flooding. They don't answer calls so you can't confirm is they have open gym. If you're looking for an indoor gym take the drive to the burbank park basketball gym by the pool. Here's the thing....I left a 5 star review several years ago and now I'm lowering into 2 stars. This YMCA really pisses me off. The past few months they have gotten rid of the stairs entering the pool, my wife has mobility issues and used to use the stairs to enter into the pool. Those are gone so basically she can NOT use the pool because she can't use the tiny little steps that are built into the pool, you know the ones I mean? So the pool is useless to her and what pisses me off the most is they got rid of the weight room upstairs and you can not go upstairs anymore, I got barked at by the staff for going up there. The room that had all the leg machines and butterfly curl machines downstairs...GONE!!! So basically they got rid of 2 rooms full of machines to make room for some other bullshit room for yoga and Zumba. The one cardio room that had all the stair masters and ellipticals got reduced so now there are huge spaces between each machine....and don't blame it on COVID because that is every businesses MO why their services have gone down. COVID is 3 years old...let's move on. I asked where all the machines went and the staff said they moved them to different YMCAs....why??? So basically they have reduced their machines probably by half, gotten rid of the stairs (who knows how senior citizens get into the pool) yet their membership prices have stayed the same (it may have gone up...I'm not sure). I literally love 1 block away so yea I can go to a different YMCA but I shouldn't have to. Total bullshit, I've been a member for probably a decade, it's time to cancel them. I started my membership 2 months ago. Everyone is very pleasant and if you go during the day it's not busy at all. The pool is very nice and I like playing basketball on the clean court. The people who come there for members are mostly seniors, and family's. Most for them are full of themselves (seniors) the facility is mid for their prices they are offer way less then any other gym. On top of that the pool is way to warm, the locker rooms look like they've been the same since the 1980s. There are no acs just fans in the basketball court, cardio room and gym. read more

This place used to be great. There was a cardio room packed with stationary bikes, ellipticals, stairmasters, treadmills, and rowing machines, a "beginner" weight room downstairs with cable machines and a couple of treadmills, a separate large room upstairs with even more cable machines, and a free weight room with a squat rack, bench press, benches, and dumbbells. In the corridor looking down on the basketball court, we even had a couple more treadmills and a punching bag. In short, tons of equipment. I returned to the gym about 10 years later, and it is a sad sight. The free weight room and upstairs weight room with cable machines were gone. A few months later, the "beginner" weight room downstairs was also emptied out, with most of the cable machines never to be seen again. Whatever was left of 3 separate weight rooms, basically a squat rack, benches press, and 5 or so cable machines, have been packed in the old dance studio. The cardio room has about half the equipment it once did. What is the worst part of it is that the 3 weight rooms we had are now empty most of the time. The downstairs weight room will occasionally have some children's program and the upstairs weight room (after being emptied and closed off to members for over a year) has been turned into some type of classroom for kids, but again, is empty for most of the day. I have no idea what became of the free weight room, but it is not used by members to work out. Why the hell are we paying for a gym when we can't use half the space inside? The isolated pieces of cardio equipment in the corridors and the punching bag have also been removed. Instead of getting better and more equipment, we have old, rusted weights and a significantly reduced selection at that. This once great gym has become a glorified daycare center with children running around, often unattended I may add, while the people who pay dues to actually work out have been relegated to a tiny room which does not have enough equipment for 7 people to use simultaneously. And even this tiny weight room is closed off at times without any notice to members. To add insult to injury, this YMCA charges $40 a month, more than Crunch, LA Fitness, and 24 Hour Fitness which all have many more amenities, and if that weren't enough, we were recently told that our membership dues are going to increase in the coming year to $44. For what exactly? We should be paying more for old and less equipment? Essentially, you are not paying for a gym membership here, you are subsidizing an ill-run daycare. It is no wonder that this place used to be filled with people every day of the week, but now, you rarely see more than a dozen working out at any given time. I tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt, I figured that it would slowly return to how it was before COVID, but for the past 2 years, it has only gotten worse. read more

This gym may not have the pizzazz and aesthetics that the other "big name" gyms have, but that's definitely a plus. Those big gyms tend to have an overabundance of people especially during peak times, and though this gym can have it's share of crowds during peak times, it doesn't feel as suffocating. More on that later. As far as the facility goes, they have rooms dedicated to what you want to concentrate on. Cardio? Free weights? Weight machines? Check. There's even a beginners gym room that's perfect for anyone who has a "New Years resolution" that they want to get started with. There's a basketball gym for anyone from the aspiring NBA prospect to the guy that just want to practice drills. There's a pool (and a good size at that) that staffs a lifeguard at all times (yes, even if there's only one person swimming). They have other rooms to accommodate the many different classes that they offer, like swimming, cycling, Zumba... the list goes on. The dressing rooms are pretty clean and neat too, and there's enough lockers available if you like to train with a huge entourage. They even have child care too. The staff are very helpful, friendly, and enthusiastic. They all greet you with a smile and will take care of you. Even the head of this branch will make help you take care of any issues that you may have. I say this because I had issues regarding class sign-ups and payment option issues that was getting to be a pain to deal with. Admittedly, it was more of an issue about the general YMCA website that links all of the YMCAs together, but it was the people from this branch that handled things, including the head guy (sorry, I forgot his name) emailing the YMCA IT department. Super saiyan customer service. Now as for those "crowds." For a small to midsize gym, you'll pretty much have lots of room to operate during non-peak times, but if you go during peak times, you'll start to notice a lot of regulars. It is these regulars that, from my experience, will cheer you on. The people that go to this gym are have been willing to spot and share a few laughs. There's a sense of community in here, not just because of the people you may meet, but chances are you'll run into someone you know on many occasions (if you're a local). There only gripe that I have about this place is that they close REALLY early. 9 PM?? It's like there's no love to us night people haha. Overall, great place to train, swim, and just getting your swell on. Time to go 'git it. read more

There are some really old reviews here that are giving this YMCA a much lower rating than it really deserves. While this facility is not the most up-to-date, it is well-staffed and full of modern equipment, classes and services that all justify paying for a membership... If you use more than one. If you just need a pool or basketball court or gym, you can find cheaper and more modern-looking facilities elsewhere. If you want a lot of options, especially family options, this place is great. Upon arriving, we found the front desk staff to be very friendly and warm. They welcomed us and gave us a tour before we decided to sign up for membership and classes. Many services and classes are included in the membership, but some things (like swim classes) are a little extra. SWIMMING POOL The indoor pool is huge, heated and pretty awesome. On cold days, they turn on the overhead heaters. They have a schedule of pool hours for classes, lap swimming, family swim, etc. On weekday evenings, they seem to have only one lifeguard on duty at a time, even though it gets pretty busy. On weekends, there are always two, plus another in the pool conducting swim classes. I highly recommend the swim classes here. The teachers are great with the kids and the class sizes are often very small, especially before the summer. They offer physical therapy type classes for adults too. The shallow half of the pool (perfect for the kids) ranges from 3 feet to 4 feet. Then it drops to 9 feet in the deep end. No diving boards here. There's almost always a could lanes reserved for lap swimming or classes during an open swim time. I recommend always rinsing off in the shower before getting in the pool. Lifeguards may stop you if you don't. More importantly, even at your cleanest, you have oils and sweat and deodorant and hair products and who knows what else on you that shouldn't be going in the water. Additionally, the chemicals in the pool are easier to wash off if you rinse before and then rinse immediately afterwards. This is EXTREMELY important for anyone sensitive to of pool water. This pool has more chemicals than probably necessary and it makes all of us very itchy after a swim. There are no spa facilities here. There used to be a spa and/or steam room, but not anymore. FAMILY CHANGING ROOM The men's family changing room is a large no-frills locker/bathroom/shower area with easy access to the pool. It's always cold in here, making a shower or coming in from the pool uncomfortably chilly while you're drying off. There are plenty of lockers -- just bring your own lock. And plenty of showers, many with curtains for privacy. The wet floor can be slippery, so be careful. There are adult-only changing rooms on the second floor. CHILD CARE You have up to two hours of free child care while spending time here. This is great if you want to take a class or go the gym, but you have a little one you can't keep an eye on. The hours are limited, but they always seem to be available when we need them on weekend mornings. There are usually two people running the child care, which consists of a couple play rooms and an outside area. EXERCISE EQUIPMENT The exercise equipment here is more technologically advanced than many gyms. They have three main rooms, plus a couple other areas with more equipment, filled with machines and free weights. The machines are linked to a computer network that you can use to keep track of your workouts and get feedback/encouragement from a virtual trainer. When you start, you are invited to meet with a personal trainer who will set you up and help you establish your goals. All of this is included in your membership at no additional cost. EXERCISE CLASSES They have some vigorous classes here everyday. Everyone is sweating and having a good time, so just jump into one! OTHERS There are many other things worth mentioning, although we haven't had the opportunity to use them very much. A basketball court, computer room, preschool, camp, healthy food vending machine, martial arts classes, tumbling, peewee soccer, and plenty more I'm forgetting or haven't discovered yet. Perhaps my perspective is skewed since I've used the Y for a while in West LA and in Hollywood, but this particular location is depressing and in need of a make-over. There is no swimsuit swimmer, no saunas (dry or steam), no jacuzzi and while all those "extras" are the not the earmarks of a great Y, they help justify the monthly expense. I'm only a swimmer. That's all I want the Y for. I went into this location today at 4 and there was one lane open for lap swimming. Half of that one lane was being used by a father teaching his kid to swim, not lap swim, or turn on the wall, or anything like that, just to swim. There were kids unsupervised in the men's locker room. No warm water in the showers. Based on the other reviews, I'm assuming that for weight lifters and other types of exercise, this place might be okay. For swimmers: not so much. read more

I came to this gym for years. Unfortunately, the lack of equipment (especially the weight room), rude staff, and high cost -$32 pushed me look at other gyms. The reason I'm giving the YMCA such low rating is because when I came into cancel my membership, well before payment day (12 days in advance), they still charged me the full month. We pretty much live here. We love the staff and the facilities. They are constantly updating. The gym is fully renovated, the pool was re sprayed and outside has been redone as well. They have a new computer system for check in for childcare and we have always loved their programs for our kids and all of the workout classes! read more

I'm pissed! After being a loyal patron since 1996, I found out last week that my membership has been changed. My whole family was in the membership, and now they have my mom and dad, and someone that hasn't lived with us for over 15 years in the membership. I'm pissed as heck! I couldn't even do anything because my mother is th be primary account user. We're going to cancel our monthly payment and also demand reparations. This is ridiculous. Their stupid system can't even pull up our membership history. You all use to be my favorite spot, but horrible member services on top of poor management simply leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Steer clear of this place. Loyal members aren't even valued. They have the audacity to charge us a monthly payment of $60 for what appears to be a change in membership for only 3 people. And as I mentioned before only 2 are even people in my family, the other one hasn't lived with us for 15 years. They told me in membership services that 2 people is $20 a month and another person is an additional $20. There's no way in hell that we should be charged $60 a month, they are exhorting us. Someone's going to have to answer for all of this. read more

ROACHES, ROACHES AND MORE ROACHES!! I excitedly signed up as member at this facility more than a year ago. I was initially impressed by the large size of the facility and the many classes offered - - I should have looked closer. The place is filthy on a consistent basis. They have a huge roach problem which they have been "working on" for at least the last 8 months. There are roaches in the Women's Locker Room, and ROACHES IN THE POOL AREA!! WTF!! It is not safe to sit your open bag down or to lean your back on the wall when you sit on the bench in the pool area - lest you'll be unknowingly taking one of these lovely little pests home with you. Aside from the roaches I have found feces on the floor in the dressing room of the Women's Locker Room, toilet areas are never clean and the place has a generally moldy smell about it. The place is run by lackadaisical 20-something-year olds that have horrible communication skills and there does not seem to be an interest from upper management to change or improve the way it is run. I might not mind if I didn't have to pay for membership and I was on scholarship BUT I do pay (the full amount) and I don't feel I'm getting my money's worth!! Canceling membership. read more

The Y has a friendly staff, nice equipment, and a full class schedule. And it's affordable. There's generous free parking, and I've only had trouble finding a spot once in the months I've been a member. Really, what more can you ask for from a gym? My roommates are also members and enjoy their fitness tracking program FitLinx, although it sometimes doesn't sync up with the machines and is therefore not always accurate. I've never actually used it myself though (I just haven't seen the need), so I can't vouch for it. On the downside: --From what I can tell, the neighboring high school uses the gym for PE classes. It can be annoying, especially when teenage girls are just sitting around on equipment and dishing details they shouldn't discuss in a family environment. --After five or so, the families come out, and people don't really control their kids. So that can also be annoying. --Certain parts of the gym have a moldy smell. read more

The Y is such a wonderful thing...I've been trying to get to a public pool for two weeks, and was desperate to be active and jump start the healing process for my writing arm after my fall over the weekend... what better way than swimming to strength train, do your cardio and have low or no impact... but the public pools are really built for kids. with limited and akward times for lap swimming, adult lessons and water excercise... the Y! a gem of affordability, endless classes, and lap swim most of the day, and my most treasured water aerobics classes almost every evening...their hip hop dance workout is kinda insane, so good, treadmills are pletniful, weight room has individually programmed routines w/ reminders on your settings once you get oriented, and i've yet to do yoga and/or pilates, as soon as the arm heals for yoga! me so happy. and yeah yeah yeah just bring your own towel...they never have any... read more

This place is dirty, filthy. I signed up entire family without really taking a tour. We came to sign up our daughter for dance class Monday night. 1st it is not even in the building but in the small beat up bungalow across from it. I picked inside it looked dirty and not near suitable for child Dance class. I still wanted to give it a try. Instructor was late, the longer we seat the less I wanted for us to stay. I do not feel safe to leave my child in any of the classes and comfortably exercise myself. Speaking of, pilates in the class full of machines and just trying to squeeze your mat in between not a good idea either. I was looking forward for some new activities for whole family but this cannot work for us. One start for stuff, they are friendly. read more

Place is OK for what it is. Folks don't seem to like wiping equipment after they use it. The free weights room could use some updating as well as more weights. The weights are in a constant state of disarray and people seem to have little respect for the decor. Seems pointless to put away weights neatly when someone will come and get them, use for 5 minutes then leave them all over the place. read more

There's ample amounts of parking, 99% is not shaded but a few of the closer ones are shaded with trees. Most of the place looks in tip top shape the equipment looks brand new. The locker rooms are a disgrace, the smell, the old benches, the lockers are old dirty broken and small i think they are from the 70's or something. The showers are a bit newer pretty clean, airy and bright. The pool is great full 25 meters, very deep 9' so i can head dive, just the only think that bumms me out is they close it when they have kids camps visiting. So if they will remodel the locker rooms i will defently update my review. read more

The daycare here is amazing. the girls are all very patient & helpful. My son is 3. and started when he was 2. I started off at porter ranch location and they always came to get me cause couldn't handle my son. which is a little annoying because, now i felt like they just gave up too fast. the gym is a diamond in the ruff, the location is not the best but the gym is totally worth it and safe parking lot. Not a member at this time cause it is the one I like but a little distant, However my son completely remembers and enjoyed it there. read more

I swim at a his Y and compared to other Y's, this is a very good Y. People are complaining about 30 bucks, you can go to any other Y with the membership p. I principally use this as a gym, and I come here because of the pool. If you just want a gym, you can find somewhere that's better and cheaper. If you want to swim and/or you want a variety of classes for adults and children and a nice communal feeling, you can get it here. The pool is nice and warm and reasonably clean. It used to be clearer but maybe they're slacking with the cleaning. The free weight room is dolefully under-equipped but acceptable if you're not lifting a whole lot. There are many cardio machines. There is a big basketball gym, and on the catwalk overlooking it there hangs a too-high, very-hard punching bag. I've used it for kicking, but punching? Forget about it. I've been a member of the YMCA since I was a kid and in different cities (Seattle, Battle Creek, Chicago). This gym is exactly what it needs to be, a place where the community has the ability to come and destress after a day's or week's work. Having been to other Valley area YMCAs the workout area is the largest, usually always able to use a machine or equipment without a long wait. The locker rooms are clean and the staff is always pleasant (then again I dont go there to socialize) however they always speak and smile. If you want a prissy glamour gym to be 'seen' or 'get hit on/cruised' then go to 24 Hour and L.A. Fitness. If you want to work out while at the same time know that some of your monthly dues helps to provide a venue for our children and elderly to be active. This YMCA is the place. read more

I went to tour this YMCA and was pretty disappointed at how dire it was. It's the oldest facility in the area according to the lady who walked me around. It's like a rabbit warren of rooms especially the workout rooms which makes it difficult because you might have to go from room to room in order to get a full workout in and none is close to the other. Also they had a very limited collection of free weights. I'm really interested in joining a YMCA because they offer so many family oriented classes and for $65 a month it's a pretty good deal for three people including a child but not in such circumstances. The day I visited it was only 73° outside but the temperature in the women's locker room was 80°... They have a thermometer right there in there so I was shocked at how warm it was read more

The staff here is very kind and they have a lot of great classes. However, I went recently and the child care schedule had changed. I'm not sure why, maybe due to low attendance, but a lot of gyms close their child care between noon and 4p. This place used to be open for part of that time but they changed it :(. Now I'm not sure there's a Y in the area that offers anything between noon and 4. Disappointing. read more

I wanted to bring my children to swim classes and some of the classes were closed however I came across (Joseph Campos) who I can say was incredible help in creating a schedule for the kids and helping me with choosing the correct classes based on my kids ages. He also added my kids to the waiting list for the swim classes that were closed. I have to say he was a great help with everythingthat I wanted. I did not get everything I wanted because the classes were mostly closed however the service that he provided with care and love was outstanding. I give him 5 stars for effort. read more

I switched to this gym when my regular neighborhood gym wasn't efficient anymore. Pro's: It isn't packed like my local 24hr. Fitness which has become, literally, unusable because of overcrowding. Has a parking lot. Con's: Dirty. I avoid wet areas and don't bring a gym bag out of fear of roaches. There's really a lack of air circulation so it gets really, really hot and stale pretty quickly. Heard someone ask the staff to turn down the heat a few mornings ago and they claimed they couldn't, that it;s on a timer. In the winter, that's fine. In the summer when it's already approaching 75 degrees at 6am having the heat running sucks. Here's the biggest con, and why I'm writing a review. I work early so when I've gotten up at 5am and driven to the gym only to find that NO ONE could be bothered to come open it at 5:30am like they're supposed to...it pisses me off. There's a laziness to the operating of this YMCA location. They have fitlinxx, but don't pay to connect it to the internet so you can't track it online and apparently the hours of operation are merely a ballpark estimate. I love getting up at 5am before working 14 hours and finding out it was totally pointless and I should have slept. read more
