The lockers may be old, but they work!

I swear...reading the reviews, you think you're about to roll up in a gym infested with rats, broken equipment and thugs! LOL. Yelpers, dude. Shame on you. This gym is awesome! The rooms are clean, the equipment is up-to-date, the weight machines are SOOOOO easy to use...even for you dummies, it is NEVER crowded, the staff is friendly, and the pool is awesome. This place...It's like family. (Okay...don't screw up the vibe we have going...cause I'll change my review quick! So far, so good)

There are some really old reviews here that are giving this YMCA a much lower rating than it really deserves. While this facility is not the most up-to-date, it is well-staffed and full of modern equipment, classes and services that all justify paying for a membership... If you use more than one. If you just need a pool or basketball court or gym, you can find cheaper and more modern-looking facilities elsewhere. If you want a lot of options, especially family options, this place is great. Upon arriving, we found the front desk staff to be very friendly and warm. They welcomed us and gave us a tour before we decided to sign up for membership and classes. Many services and classes are included in the membership, but some things (like swim classes) are a little extra. SWIMMING POOL The indoor pool is huge, heated and pretty awesome. On cold days, they turn on the overhead heaters. They have a schedule of pool hours for classes, lap swimming, family swim, etc. On weekday evenings, they seem to have only one lifeguard on duty at a time, even though it gets pretty busy. On weekends, there are always two, plus another in the pool conducting swim classes. I highly recommend the swim classes here. The teachers are great with the kids and the class sizes are often very small, especially before the summer. They offer physical therapy type classes for adults too. The shallow half of the pool (perfect for the kids) ranges from 3 feet to 4 feet. Then it drops to 9 feet in the deep end. No diving boards here. There's almost always a could lanes reserved for lap swimming or classes during an open swim time. I recommend always rinsing off in the shower before getting in the pool. Lifeguards may stop you if you don't. More importantly, even at your cleanest, you have oils and sweat and deodorant and hair products and who knows what else on you that shouldn't be going in the water. Additionally, the chemicals in the pool are easier to wash off if you rinse before and then rinse immediately afterwards. This is EXTREMELY important for anyone sensitive to of pool water. This pool has more chemicals than probably necessary and it makes all of us very itchy after a swim. There are no spa facilities here. There used to be a spa and/or steam room, but not anymore. FAMILY CHANGING ROOM The men's family changing room is a large no-frills locker/bathroom/shower area with easy access to the pool. It's always cold in here, making a shower or coming in from the pool uncomfortably chilly while you're drying off. There are plenty of lockers -- just bring your own lock. And plenty of showers, many with curtains for privacy. The wet floor can be slippery, so be careful. There are adult-only changing rooms on the second floor. CHILD CARE You have up to two hours of free child care while spending time here. This is great if you want to take a class or go the gym, but you have a little one you can't keep an eye on. The hours are limited, but they always seem to be available when we need them on weekend mornings. There are usually two people running the child care, which consists of a couple play rooms and an outside area. EXERCISE EQUIPMENT The exercise equipment here is more technologically advanced than many gyms. They have three main rooms, plus a couple other areas with more equipment, filled with machines and free weights. The machines are linked to a computer network that you can use to keep track of your workouts and get feedback/encouragement from a virtual trainer. When you start, you are invited to meet with a personal trainer who will set you up and help you establish your goals. All of this is included in your membership at no additional cost. EXERCISE CLASSES They have some vigorous classes here everyday. Everyone is sweating and having a good time, so just jump into one! OTHERS There are many other things worth mentioning, although we haven't had the opportunity to use them very much. A basketball court, computer room, preschool, camp, healthy food vending machine, martial arts classes, tumbling, peewee soccer, and plenty more I'm forgetting or haven't discovered yet. I never imagined I'd join a YMCA, but I'm happy we decided to check it out. We're here several times a week for various activities and we're very happy with our membership so far.

Tl;dr we're not coming back with our younger children…read more I would give this place 1 star except for one reason. Pro: * Coach Ella is an AMAZING teacher. When we switched from Group to Private lessons, our son improved leaps and bounds every single week. She is fun and smart and helpful, and she should be the benchmark that ALL teachers strive for. Cons: * The Group lessons don't really teach much beyond water comfortability. Instead of helping each child improve individually, the teachers just go through the motions in a systematic pattern each class. * The school shows little to no interest in caring about a child advancing; the school only seems to care that our check clears. We spent 1.5 years at the same Group level without ever advancing because the teachers weren't encouraged to push our child. See the note above re: going Private with Coach Ella. * The front desk staff is horribly unhelpful and very poorly trained. We've experienced multiple issues with bookings, billing, and scheduling when interacting with them. There should also be a "no cell phone" policy because half the time we need to speak with someone, the front desk staff members are texting / using their cell phones. * The showers and changing rooms are dirty and gross by the time we need to use them at 5:45 pm. Maybe instead of allowing 2-3 front desk staff to play on their cell phones all shift, there should be a rotation of light cleaning every 30/60 minutes. A little bit of care would go a long ways.

I brought my 4-year-old son to Aqua Buddies for swim lessons. At first, everything seemed fine…read more During his initial lesson, he worked with one instructor and learned basic skills like blowing bubbles, which was a positive start. However, as we continued, each lesson was with a different instructor, and that lack of consistency made my son increasingly uncomfortable. At his age, familiarity matters, and it became clear he wasn't settling in the way I had hoped. What ultimately led me to write this review, though, was not the instructors--it was the customer service. My interactions with the scheduler/representative regarding scheduling, missed days, and invoices were unpleasant and rigid. There was very little kindness or willingness to work with me, and the communication felt cutthroat rather than supportive. Because of this inflexibility, my son essentially missed out on continued lessons. Instead of working with me as a parent trying to navigate life with two young kids and a disabled husband, I felt pushed out over a missed appointment. In retrospect, I now see how much that experience negatively impacted my son's relationship with the water. I'm writing this while watching my son thrive at Water Wings, where he is happy, confident, and excited to learn. Seeing the difference has made me realize just how behind he became due to how things were handled at Aqua Buddies. Thankfully, there are other options in this city. I truly wish Aqua Buddies placed more emphasis on compassion, flexibility, and customer service--especially when working with young children and families who may need understanding, not rigidity.

My three children have attended YMCA sleepaway camp for the past three years, and until this year,…read morewe had always had a positive experience. This week, my daughter developed pink eye. Around 10:00 a.m., the camp contacted me, took her to Big Bear Urgent Care, and kept me informed throughout the medical visit. She was diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis and prescribed antibiotic eye drops. I appreciated the prompt medical attention and communication. Later that afternoon, I was informed that I needed to drive to camp to pick her up. As a Public Health Nurse, I understand the importance of infection control and protecting other campers. What deeply upset me was not the decision to send her home--it was how she says she was treated while waiting for me. When I arrived at 7 pm after a three-hour drive, my daughter was in tears. She told me she had been isolated since the night before in a single cabin room by herself, with the door kept closed. (So that was approximately 23 hours? An 11 yrs old girl isolated for, well minus 3 hrs for urgent care lets say, 20 hours?) She said she wasn't allowed or offered to participate in even solo activities and had very little interaction with anyone. When she went to the restroom, she overheard staff whispered to other staff, "Be careful, she might touch everything, just spray the bathroom." She also stated that her meals were taken into her single cabin room, placed far away from her, so the Camp Director who brought it in wouldn't be too close to her (even though its bacterial infection and spread through direct contact- it was NOT an airborne or droplet precautions), making her feel like people were afraid to come near her. She told me she felt like she was "in prison." Whether every detail happened exactly as she perceived it or not, that was her experience, and no child should leave camp feeling frightened, ashamed, or treated like they are less than a person because they became ill. I fully support reasonable precautions for contagious illnesses. However, children also deserve COMPASSION, REASSURANCE, and human KINDNESS while waiting for their parents to arrive. Especially from the Camp Director. We have loved YMCA sleepaway camp for years, which makes this experience especially disappointing. I hope the camp reviews how children in medical isolation are cared for and trains staff to balance infection control with empathy. Unfortunately, after this experience, our family will not be returning.

At the 1st official lesson, she had him jumping in the pool and flipping over to his back to float COMPLETLEY UNASSISTED! I seriously can't believe how fast she taught him! So, my son had familiarity with swim lessons, but he had never been able to float or do much of anything on his own in the water. Anna at Hall Swim Academy is an excellent teacher…read more Two years ago, my son (who was 7 at the time) was going to another swim school and was doing ok but advancing slowly. As part of that school's safety training, they threw him in the water wearing street clothes. He was doing ok for about 30 seconds but then panicked and started to sink so one of the teachers had to jump in and pull him out. (It was partially my fault since I mistakenly had him wear long pants that absorbed water). Anyhow, he freaked out and got very scared. We continued to go to that school for several more weeks but he stagnated with his training and the teacher became frustrated and tried to push him too hard so he had a melt down. Fast forward two years, I started taking him to the Hall Swim Academy west LA location about 2 months ago and he started trying again to learn how to swim with Anna. Anna is extremely kind and patient with kids. She demonstrates what she wants him to do and corrects mistakes in his floating and swim strokes and has him repeat as necessary. She is able to recognize how much to push and when to give him more space and repeats instructions as necessary. He loves going to swim class with Anna and is motivated to learn so he can swim with his friends at summer camp. Yesterday, he had two major breakthroughs. He spent most of the class in the pool without wearing goggles which he previously refused to do. Then, on his own, he decided he wanted to try the swim test. So, he put on street clothes over his swim suit, jumped in the water, floated on his back for 20 seconds and then easily swam to the side of the pool and climbed out on his own. He was so proud of himself for overcoming his fear and is now looking forward to his next class with Anna. I am very grateful to Anna for her kindness, professionalism, excellent teaching skills and being such a good motivator. Thank you!!
