I went just for an oil change and check-up. After having an awful experience at my car dealer, I didn't know where to go but figured this would be close and cheap. I was in a hurry and forgot to take my belongings out of the car when I left it with them - including tons of cds, sunglasses, even some money! And it was all just where I'd left it when I got back. I was having issues with my tire pressure light coming on. I called the shop around 10 AM and spoke with Mike. I let him know my issue and he informed me that the best time to come was before 12 or after 1. I got to the shop around 1, dropped my car off, and about an hour to a half hour later got a call letting me know that everything was ready for me to pick up my car. The light didnt go off immediately so I called the shop back and Mike assured me that it would go off after a while and if not I could bring my car back. The light went off and I haven't had problems since. Great service. read more

I take my car here for everything now. They've done work for half what I've been quoted elsewhere, and they are just really good guys. They once made a mistake (which I didn't realize), and they figured it out and fixed it on the spot, and made no attempt to charge me even though I would never have known it was their fault if they hadn't told me. I also brought my car in recently because it seemed to be doing something scary but it turned out to be very minor so they just fixed it on the spot and didn't charge me anything. One time I even saw them go out and rescue some poor woman who ran out of gas in the middle of the intersection near the shop. How often do you find friendly, honest businesses in Chicago? It does tend to get busy but you can walk to plenty of stores/junk food in the area if the tiny waiting room is crowded and its close to buses and the red line if you need to leave your car for the day or overnight. read more

So sad to give Midas a horrible review... but I have never been so angry when leaving a mechanic. After a flat tire, Midas replaced all of my tires two months ago $500. I asked the mechanic about the emergency tire pressure sensor light that was on when I was driving away. He told me that was normal and that I had to drive a little bit on it. I took it back and Midas told me that I could buy a new tire pressure sensor for $100. Nah... I'm not into fancy gadgets. When I took my car in to my regular mechanic (who doesn't do tire repairs) for an air conditioning tune up, my mechanic said that Midas didn't fill up my tires and that is why the tire pressure sensor light was on. That was dumb of Midas and an easy thing that they should have fixed in the three tries I gave them. Fast forward one month and my tire pressure sensor light goes on. I pull into a gas station to fill up my tires (completely irked at this point since my tires are brand new). While filling up the third tire, the valve stem snaps off in my fingers and I'm left putting on my spare tire and driving back to Midas. I'm thinking that this is no big deal since this should be covered under my warranty. NO! They had installed the old valve stems from my old tires into my new tires. If I wanted my new (flat) tire put back on instead of my spare tire, (remember I paid over $500 for these tires), they would do it for me for $89. RIDICULOUS! I took my car to a different mechanic and they simply replaced the valve stem. Since I had never been to that mechanic, they charged me $26, but told me that they do that repair for regular customers all the time for free. Go ANYWHERE but here. They don't care about you. This place was HORRIBLE!!! They gave us an estimate of $1400 to replace brakes. When we said we wanted to take the car to another place to get another opinion, they were very rude. Then, the car wouldn't start and they took no responsibility for that. They told me it would be another diagnostic charge to figure out that problem!! This place is not to be trusted. We ended up taking the car to AAA Muffler's and Brakes on west North Avenue. They only charged $650 for the exact same problem and were very professional, curteous and informative. My recommendation is to never use this place. They overcharge and don't do a good job anyway!! read more

I was very disappointed in my experience with this location and they didn't even fix my car. The front desk associate was very misleading with information regarding the time frames for service. I was basically told to come back two hours later, and then when I did come back at the time, I was told that it would be an additional hour to hour and a half & that I should of made an appointment. An appointment was never an option when I was initially there, so I went and found another shop to fix my car who was able to take me when they said they could. Midas my time is just as valuable as yours. I will never try this Midas location again. read more

I realized my car was desperately in need of an oil change, so I called up Midas, since this location is close to me. I spoke with a kind man on the phone (I think his name was Jesse but I'm not positive), and he said that they were pretty busy all day but that if I dropped the car off, they could complete the oil change by the end of the day. So I brought the car, walked home, and then received a call a few hours later that my car was ready. They were flexible with my pick-up time, which was great. When I arrived, I simply got the key, paid for the service, and took my car, which was conveniently parked facing the street for an easy exit. (Their parking is a bit tricky, and I was very happy to not have to back out on to Roosevelt Road!) The staff members I encountered here were kind, and I really appreciated that they did not try to upsell me on other products and services that I likely didn't need (this has happened to me before at other oil change spots). This review is for the Midas at 510 W Roosevelt Rd. The address in Yelp is incorrect. Anyway, on with the review.... AVOID AVOID AVOID! I can't say this strongly enough. If you need exhaust service, and you don't want to pay what the dealer's shop would charge, then find a good independent mechanic. The grease monkeys at this place will charge you $350 even if you're replacing a previously installed Midas muffler that has a so-called "lifetime" guarantee. They'll concoct a story about how other parts need to be replaced. If you insist on just getting the muffler replaced under warranty, they'll just hand you a muffler in a box and "here ya go!" As for the quality of the work...NOT. My car (Honda Civic) sounds ridiculously loud now. I've since taken it to a Honda shop and they said it's because Midas uses one-size-fits-all aftermarket parts instead of the correct parts designed for Hondas. Save yourself money and aggravation. Go to a shop that knows something about your kind of car (and uses the right parts) the first time. Crooks. read more

I had a good experience at this Midas shop. My car needed exhaust work, some of which was under warranty from Midas--but the warranty was issued from a Midas in a different city. I did not have the warranty papers or store number or really any evidence of said warranty with me. The mechanic/office worker very agreeably looked everything up after calling me with the work estimate. They did the work in the agreed-upon time. That was 5 months ago and I haven't had any problems. The shop itself is a bit cramped and unpleasant. I had to guess a little that one is supposed to drive the car down a tight driveway to the back of the store. I really wouldn't have wanted to wait for the car to be fixed as the waiting area is tiny and, well, unpleasant in that auto repair shop kind of way. Fortunately there are several cafes and lots of stores within a couple blocks of the shop. (I walked over to the Whole Foods shopping block on Roosevelt and entertained myself at Michael's and DSW before heading to a pleasant-enough cafe in the same building.) I had a bit of trouble understanding the desk worker--especially over the phone--but we managed, and he was skilled in the ways that matter most. read more

Only reason not getting 5 stars is because of location and lack of parking. Welcome to the city! Otherwise it is a great place. Took car in to get the oil changed. I knew going in that the power steering fluid was getting bad and that two tires were severely worn. The manager (Jimmy) said that the power steering fluid was not worst he'd seen and that I would probably be ok for another 3,000 miles, but that the tires definitely were worn. Having a manager/mechanic be that honest and genuine is definitely refreshing. Most of the time, these places try to sell you the expensive full synthetic oil or convince you that your coolant needs to be changed every 10,000 miles. It is just nice to encounter those shops that just do the work you need and not try to sell you something you don't need. The oil change, tire replacement (rotation/balancing) took only about an hour. Great experience overall, competitively priced, and will probably be heading back for basic car maintenance. read more

I parked in front of Midas Muffler at 510 W. Roosevelt to see if they could take my vehicle in for an oil change. The representative told me that they would do the oil change and that it would take about an hour and a half. The representative also told me to leave the vehicle where it was, outside their front door. I gave him the keys and went to the Whole Foods nearby to eat. After an hour and a half, I came back to pick up my vehicle. A few weeks later, I received a parking ticket in the mail. It is clear that Midas Muffler left the vehicle for a prolonged period on the street, and it was subsequently ticketed. Also, Midas Muffler obviously threw out the parking ticket and made no mention of it so I would be clueless of what happened. I tried to contest the ticket with the city, but it didn't work. $50 for the parking ticket because of these a-holes. I'm a business owner too. What I would have done if I were them would be to show integrity and tell me about the ticket. Then comp the oil change and the next one to make up for the fine I have to pay. Instead, they chose the shady way. I'd rather not deal with dishonest people. Midas, you just lost a customer. read more

I was really nervous about my first oil change in the city (I'm from out of state and didn't know what to expect with a new mechanic). I'm always concerned about being "ripped off", especially as a female who doesn't know a ton about cars! I'm so pleased with this place. I will certainly be back. I was treated with respect and courtesy. In addition, I did not have an appointment and was still taken care of quickly (I was in and out in about an hour, even though the shop seemed busy). The manager came to me while I was waiting and took me into the garage to point out that my windshield washer fluid tank had a small crack, but gave me his honest opinion, which was that I should never really have to replace it unless it gets worse. He pointed it out simply as a courtesy to let me know not to overfill the tank and to just keep an eye on it. I didn't have any major work done, but I overheard the manager interacting with other customers-he always gave a quote before they started and never tried to sell them on something they didn't come for. Took my car in recently with what I suspected was a worn out wheel bearing. Really good service from the guys there. I described the symptoms to the mechanic and he suggested we take the car out so he could hear it for himself. Unlike so many mechanics, he then actually seemed to want to engage in a conversation about what I'd been able to diagnose so far. Getting back to the shop, he then put the car up on the stands and proceeded to check both front bearings for noise to ensure that the fault had been correctly diagnosed. I then got a reasonable quote and left my keys. The work was done early next morning. In short, the service was courteous, quick, well priced and knowledgeable. I will be returning! read more

So for oil changes they charge around 40 dollars with regular oil. they can get quite busy as well since it's in a central location. with the oil change there is what "Jimmy" the manager calls a "full checkup." There is a list that he can show you with all aspects that he will check off. Essentially, at this auto shop you are picking 1 auto mechanic (Jimmy) who is the manager. They get many of their auto parts shipped in from Napa or any other local part store, so they have to call it in. If you get an oil change, any diagnosing can be included in part of the change. I also saw someone drive up his car complaining of a symptom, and he immediately hopped in and drove it around to see what was going on. Jimmy seems to be a little high strung, but knows his cars and works on his own mustang at home after I talked with him a little. His investment in cars eased my mind a little. Pricing is a bit higher than others. He found my problems from a broken sway bar, from a leaking oil pan, and uneven tires. for removal and replacement of tie rod ends in both front tires, was 217.36. for removal and replacement of 1 sway bar, was 187.70. From what I see, they charged $114 for each hour/job aspect that needed replacement or fixing. Alignment cost me 89.95. I called around afterwards to compare prices and in general mechanics make around 100 dollars for an hour of labor, so they charge a little more than normal. But, they were prompt, you can enjoy a cup of coffee nearby or shop because of a good location. Brought it in first thing sat morning at 730 and they were done at 10am, so did take awhile. Besides Jimmy who oversees the work, there are around 2-3 other mechanics working. Overall, a smaller auto shop feel, but definitely seemed like Jimmy was able to diagnose quickly and give you a run down of what the problem was. Initial diagnostics can be included if you bring in for an oil change I believe so for 40 dollars for an oil change and diagnosis, can be an overall cheaper option with other shops that charge 75-100 dollars for just diagnosing. read more

I came here to get an inspection to drive uber. It took about an hour which I expected. When they came back they told me I needed new brakes, rotors and a tire. Now I had taken my car to the dealer not to long before and they said my brakes were fine so I called the dealership and told them what was found. The dealership apologized and told me to bring my car in the next day and they would fix the problem. I thought I could get the issues fixed at the dealership and bring it back to Midas to get another inspection and be done. That's when I was informed that if I did not get the work done with them, if I brought my car back for an inspection it would cost $50. Now mind you the inspection this time only cost 19.99 but because I wouldn't get my car fixed with them they were going to charge me more than twice as much to get a second inspection even though they would be going the exact same thing as my first inspection. Really, talk about a huge scam. So because someone doesn't want to get the work done through you your going to charge them more than twice the amount the next time around. On top of that when I took my car to the dealership the next day they said I didn't need my rotors replaced. So I would have paid to get work done here that didn't need to be done. Avoid this place at all cost. read more

I was in Chicago from WDM, IA because my daughter was in the hospital. Got a flat tire and was able to get it to this Midas location. The service was incredible. The people working there were helpful and kind.I didn't share why i was in town. They were just kind because they were kind. I did not feel like they were taking advantage of someone from out of town who was in an unlucky spot. On the contrary, I felt like because I was from out of town they took the extra time to help me and make sure I would be safe. People waiting with me told me stories about the people and service and about why they had been bringing their cars to this location for over 20 years, even if they moved from the neighborhood. SCAMMERS!!!! Do not waste your money there. They wanted $650 for a full break replacement, I found 3 other quotes for HALF the price. I called Midas and told them not to complete the service, they confirmed on phone nothing including the oil change had been completed. I got there 5 minutes later only for them to say they had started the oil change. Ok fine. I get ready to pay and ask if that includes the first time use discount. Mike the manager lies and tells me they don't do oil change discounts (despite telling me last week they do and despite the woman who I saw earlier who got a first time discount). So I bring this up and he says well I was going to discount your breaks, and I say ok I'm not getting breaks so you're telling me that bc I found a cheaper place I can't have an oil change discount? I explained to him how good customer service is consistent and fair across the board. Just rude, and not right. I am a full time graduate student, you don't just take people's money. It's good news! I had an emergency driving into work this morning, a scraping sound underneath the car. OMG! I was frantic, my first thought is damn the muffler or something worse. Jimmy took me right away, and I was out in 10 minutes. Thank God it was just a loose clip on my heating panel. They put it back and didn't charge me a thing! :) So if you have any problems in the downtown area, go to Jimmy at Midas on Canal and Roosevelt, they are really nice people do execellent work. read more

The worst auto repair experience I've ever had. I let my car sit over winter like an idiot and a hole rust through my brake line. It started with the telltale squishy pedal that led to complete brake loss. Instead of trying to find the hole and replace the line myself I thought it would be easy to just take it to this Midas. I was very wrong. I stopped in the day before i planned on dropping it off and spoke with Jimmy. He was professional and helpful. When I went to drop the car off the next day, an older guy named Jimmy was the manager on duty. First, he lost my phone number and called back four hours after he originally said he would. At this point he claimed that I needed all new pads, drums, rotors, the whole nine. On all four wheels! he quoted the work at $1500. I told him I was just going to come pick it up and to not touch it, and he said I had 20 minutes before they closed and hung up on me. When I got there, he tried to pursued me to leave it over Sunday night and have the manager source parts cheaper than he could on a Sunday. roughly $200 cheaper. Sounded like BS but it was going to be more convenient for me to pick it up Monday. Before I left, I insisted that it was just a leak in one of the lines and that it was physically impossible that it could be all four wheels, and I asked if he had bled the line to look for a leak. He said that there was fluid in the reservoir so it couldn't be a leak. I had told him when i dropped it off that i had filled it to see if i had a bad cylinder. I was pretty dumbfounded at this point. These guys are supposed to be pros. I got a call not five minutes after leaving the shop on my bike. It was (old) Jimmy. He said they bled the line and found the leak. The same guy who 10 minutes previously had me out in the garage looking at the surface rust on my rotors telling me it was rusted through and useless and that was the problem. They called back on Monday morning and told me it was going to be around $600 to replace and "flush" the left rear line. The younger Jimmy was very professional when i came to pick it up after not having any work done on it, but i noticed when i got my to my parking spot that they had left the bleed valves open on my brakes and the fluid still in the line was leaking all over and was sprayed all over my undercarriage. Horrible experience. Got the line replaced for $60 out in the suburbs after towing it home on a uhaul for $50. put around 5000 miles on her since and the brakes work like a charm. read more
