Let me just emphasize how terrible this place is!!!! They have a mechanic who clearly doesn't know what they're doing. I literally got my car back with the steering wheel turned at a 90-degree angle, completely off-center. Go ahead, take your car to this awful place, and it will come back just as broken as when you brought it in, if not worse. The service is terrible, and they use second-hand or even third-hand parts. I ended up taking my car to the dealership, and they were stunned by the condition it was returned in!!!!! I got new brake pads and rotors for the front and back of my car in the Spring of 2023 from this Midas (total of over $1,100 spent). Less than 2 years & 15,000 miles later, my brakes & rotors all need replacing (they mentioned this is not the most outlandish case they have seen). I got the brakes/rotors inspected here recently and they let me know that the only parts under warranty from my last repair were the front rotors, not the rear rotors or the brake pads on the front or back. They quoted me over $700 for the necessary repair including the labor required. When getting the work done in 2023 they continued to try to upsell me on things without actually diagnosing any issues and I know this because I just had prior work done. This place will provide you with low quality products & low quality service and go the extra mile to recommend additional unnecessary work. read more

I went in for an oil change. They had told me that the struts needed to be replaced. Instead of clarifying that each individual strut cost upwards of $500 each, they simply stated it as if it was an overall price for both. In addition, they never mentioned what the service fee was (around $450) and also failed to mentioned the overall price ($1,600) until it was time to pick up my vehicle. The most infuriating part however, was them acting like they did me a favor and take down the price at "cost" so instead of the initial $1,600 it was $1,300. read more

I've come here several times now and they always take care of me! If there's something wrong with your car that takes all but a few minutes to fix, they won't charge you. They don't try to upcharge, and as a woman, they don't treat me like an idiot (the bar is low). Also, the prices are generally great! I agree with some reviews that it can be difficult to schedule an appointment online or via phone for a specific day/time, as they usually tell you to just drop it off and it will get done within a few hours and they typically do if drop off early enough. I've been to the Clybourn location for oil changes a few times and they have honored coupon/discounts which was nice. They also put my spare tire back on for free which was a pain. Another auto place said they couldn't do it and turned me away. I recently went in for a valve repair for engine and ADAM was great and explained exactly what was done and why it was necessary. He is always very friendly and informative. I will continue to bring my car here because of ADAM and his commitment to great customer service! read more

TL;DR: 12/10 Stars! Ask for Adam. The first time I came here it was because I was having major (MAJOR) car trouble and happened to be driving by. The shop isn't close to my house, so I didn't expect to keep coming back, but the transparency, competency, and level of customer service made the experience here worth the drive, every time. Adam is easily the best person I have ever worked with at any auto shop (and I drive a lemon, so that's saying a lot). He helped me to get my car in running order the first time I came through, was up front about the cost of everything (and it even came out lower in the end), and let me know which services could be revisited at a later time just to help keep the initial sticker shock down. They were even able to hand it back to me at the end of the day, when other shops had said it would take a week, minimum. As a woman who was new to the area and really at the mercy of my mechanic because of the state my car was in, I really did not expect to be treated with the level of care and compassion as I was. Adam is the sole reason I kept coming back and started taking better care of my car - he would listen to my concerns, speculate with great interest and passion about why certain things were happening, send it to the back for diagnostics, and then call me to help formulate a good plan to move forward without breaking the bank. After 90 days of slowly chipping away at my car's maintenance needs I can finally feel comfortable and safe driving my lemon around. I have now spent about $4k here instead of going to a more convenient location, entirely because of Adam's attitude and attentiveness. I won't just be coming here regularly because I'm still driving a POS car - this is the mechanic I will recommend and keep coming back to because he really listened to my specific needs, saved me thousands in unnecessary repairs (that other shops had previously quoted), and gave me every reason to trust his team with my car. As a bonus, after years of troubleshooting problems with disrespectful mechanics whose repairs didn't make a lick of difference, I finally have a properly running vehicle and a trustworthy mechanic now, all thanks to Adam and his team at Midas. My brake light came on in my 2017 Land Rover so I took it in to get the brakes checked out. To my surprise, I paid more than $1700 for what I thought would be a simple brake repair. I also thought the guy at the desk might cut me even a small deal, since he was helping everyone else out with the cost of their repairs, all which were lower estimates than mine. Said the high cost was "cause it's a Land Rover" but more than $500 was charged in labor so not sure how true that was. Won't be returning or recommending. Only saving grace was finding the $80 rebate online through Midas, though no one here ever told me about any deals. Sad to once again get screwed over by another auto shop. My advice-do all your research on the cost of your repair and don't just say yes cause the tires are already off your car. read more

Started patronizing this location in the early 1990s when I lived nearby; moved to River North so utilized the location on Grand. After that location closed (had a positive experience there too) I returned to Clybourn and was pleasantly surprised that nothing had changed in the way of being treated with respect/courtesy - never felt like they were trying to take advantage of my possible lack of knowledge about cars. I went there on a recommendation after PepBoys on Elston inspected my car and told me I needed to replace 2 brakes out of 4, a new battery, and 2 new tires. I went to Midas, they looked at my brakes, and told me they were fine, just not used enough so had some slight corrosion. They also said my battery was just low due to underuse, and would charge with more driving. They saved me hundreds of dollars. And today I went to have them install a CatClamp to prevent theft of my catalytic converter. I didn't know the construction of my car since I just bought it used. Adam and Joey told me I didn't need the CatClamp (purchase price $250) since my converter was far up under the engine and thieves wouldn't bother. Again, they saved me hundreds. I will definitely go back there! And they are really nice, too. read more

They checked to see if they could just repair my tire before even giving me a price. The front desk employee was very kind, helpful, and could tell he cared about the costumers. THIS SHOP IS CORRUPT! STAY AWAY! I rarely write online reviews, but I am compelled to write his one. My daughter was fleeced by this shop. They replaced the muffler, tail pipe, intermediate pipe, gasket, and resonator pipe. Their labor charge was reasonable, but they charged 3.5 times what Rock Auto charges for the exact same Walker exhaust parts. 1.5X or or even 2X would have been acceptable, but 3.5X is theft. And I doubt the resonator pipe needed to be replaced. Their additional service recommendations, which thankfully were not listened to, were absurd. Here is the list: Air filter & cabin filter - The ones in there have 20k miles, so perhaps. But Chicagoland isn't a dusty environment. The car interior doesn't smell. And see hood comments below. Oil change and filter - They know nothing about its last oil change. The car currently has Mobil 1 full synthetic, which lasts for a year or 10k miles and it is not due for a change until March. Brake fluid 200 copper ppm - I have never heard of this, I have serviced many brakes (calipers, bleeding, rotors, mounting hardware, shoes, etc.) I spoke with a professional mechanic and he had never heard of this. Brake fluid rarely needs to be replaced. Typically the only time it is replaced is when a caliper or cylinder is replaced. Power steering VPS: - I've self-serviced my vehicles for decades and never heard of power steering VPS. Power steering fluid is almost never replaced. Most power steering service is either replacing the pump and/or gasket when it leaks and replacing the belt. I've done both. Other than those two items, power steering systems are generally maintenance free. More comments regarding the air filter, brake fluid, and power steering: the hood is stuck closed, which makes it impossible for them to inspect these items!!! I wish I could assign zero stars. As a young woman, I recommend to NEVER go here! I came in for an estimate on 2 new front brake pads, 2 new rotors & 1 caliper- they estimated me about $1,500 (WAY overpriced). I told them that was too much and they offered to use cheaper parts to drop it to around $860. When I said I was going to get a second option he became rude and demand I pay the $45 for the check. When I came in, he wouldn't even look me in the eyes because he knew he tried to scam me. Go next door to Firestone, where they won't try and take advantage of you (especially young women alone.) I went in 5/18/19 because I could hear the wear indicator on my right front brake. I was told I need a total brake job on both sides and that I also needed to flush my brake lines. I was quoted $1200. This sounded ridiculous to me so I asked him to just replace the pads and calipers. He refused. So, I said I would get a second opinion. Magically, I found another place to take care of the problems that actually needed to be fixed for $293. To be fair, I think I managed to get a very good deal, but the work should not have cost over $450-$500 and I needed less than half the parts replaced that this house of horrors said I needed repaired. Go to this location if you feel like getting worked over. Also, if you want the "full," experience, make sure you talk to the owner. He will tell you the wear indicator noise means "everything is grinding and worn down," this was his evidence that the entire system needs to be replaced on both sides even though I told him the indicator noise started just the day before on the right side (a piece of metal gets exposed when the brake pad wears down, your brakes start to make a grinding noise on whatever side is worn, but in-of-itself it just means the pad needs to be replaced! It absolutely does not mean the whole brake system on that side is shot!). I'm no mechanic but the fact that he tried to phrase things to me in that way when I cleary know that not to be true made me not trust them at all. Kudos to the young guy up front who was nice and tried to talk to me about sports, it almost made the whole experience, "pleasant." Update based on owner comment: No you are not committed to honest assessments. There is a clear pattern of reviews here. Many people are happy when they accept your assessments. However, there is a regular reoccurrence of angry reviews here where you get one-starred because customers take their car elsewhere and find out how much less work needed to be done than you told them. If you are disappointed with what happens when people see your dishonesty then just stop pulling this stuff. read more

Do NOT go here. Only do so if you'd like to get your car stolen. I was in a bit of a jam one morning. I attempted to drive to City VW for a specific problem that I was able to diagnose (leaking hose) but could not make it to Portage Park and to work on time. Midas was near the El, close to work and open. I decided to take a chance. I walked in and told the manager specifically what was wrong and what I wanted done. I told him my friend had performed a pressure check on my coolant system and we found where the leak was coming from. I'm no dummy when it comes to my car, how it works and its maintenance. However, due to my long hours at work I've occasionally have had to go to places like Midas. I left the car with them and went to work. At 3 in the afternoon I placed a call to Midas since I had not recieved a call from them yet. After going back and forth with the manager (who tried to make me believe he called me when my phone did NOT ring), he stated they had done no work on the car because he wanted to ask me if I wanted to do a pressure check first before the repair. I said "No! I told you this morning I did that. I just need that certain part repaired!" He said "Oh. Well, we don't have that part." I told him to leave the car alone until I got off of work. Now for the good part. I returned, and the young woman behind the desk told me the car was ready and the "keys were inside." MIDAS LEAVES THE KEYS IN THEIR CUSTOMERS' CARS!?! She confirmed that this is "standard practise there." I was dumbfounded. I asked to talk to the manager. He also replied with "It's a small lot, it's all I can do." I said "What does that matter! You left my property as well as all the other cars unlocked and with the keys inside!" He said "Cars never get stolen here." It took all I could from to keep blowing up with rage. I said "And crime doesn't happen in the city of Chicago." I left and came to my car, with a window that had been down for hours and the keys in its ignition, in a parking lot in the near-north side. read more

Alotta annoyance just for an oil change. They tempt you with those coupons, you go in, you're told you have to wait hours without your car. Lovely. Guess I'll go shopping and get tipsy on margaritas at the dreaded Uncle Julio's. This last time though brought up some cause for concern that makes review writing necessary. This time, got there at 11am on a Sunday and was told that they might not get to it until tomorrow. Wow. But okay, we can pick it up after work. I guess. If we have no choice. And no going and buying a load at Aldi's today I suppose.... Then next day they call. Offer a huge laundry list of things that are wrong. On a car that rarely moves and if it does it's in the city or an occasional suburb trip. And they have some HIGH prices. The end of this was the kicker. And someone else had this issue as well I see. They left the keys in the ignition WITH the window rolled down. The parking lot was jammed pack and my car was practically under the train tracks next to them, where anyone could just walk up and take it. Lovely. And it's just how they do things here. The only redeeming thing here are the girls working the front desk. Always friendly and smiling. And apologetic about how long it's going to take. Lord knows what verbal abuse they take because of their mechanics. All-in-all, if you have time to wait and don't mind your car being left with the keys in it on Clybourne then fine. I spoke to Andy on the phone to ask if he could fix a small part on my car on a busy Saturday this past Memorial Day weekend. Although they were busy, he was really nice and told me I should bring my car down so he could look at it and try to get it fixed that day. I dropped off the car and they had a look and gave me an estimate (which I found to be very reasonable) and fixed my car while I waited! It took about an hour, but the problem, which could have been a doozy for my engine, was fixed! I can't thank them enough for taking the time to fix my car on a holiday weekend when I know they were swamped to being with.
