The service and food was good, no doubt about that but everything else was a no for me. As always when the waiter comes to the table they start with drinks. Now, they have alcohol in the menu but lost their liquor license and no longer serve it so they need to take it off the menu. So I ordered a Dr Pepper, but they were out so I asked for a lemonade since my bf had gotten one. The problem was that the pink lemonade was super watered down, but said that's just how it tastes, and they had to change out the Dr Pepper, but it tasted nothing like Dr Pepper, so I just got a water instead because that was a lot. This was just the first 15 minutes of us being there. I ordered something simple and that was that but I don't think I'd ever go back to that place. Had it started out better then maybe. Midnight Diner has been a favorite of mine since I moved to Charlotte! I tried the Coconut Crunch French Toast this past week and fell in LOVE. The cereal coating made the outside super crunchy while the inside of the challah bread was still very soft. I also ordered a side of the grits which are a staple when you come here. I've driven past this place a couple of times and have always seen a massive line outside. So when I was deciding where to eat for lunch, I thought about here. Luckily, there were not a lot of people waiting in line when I decided to go; you get the option of either sitting at the "bar" or sitting at one of the booths lined against the walls of the diner. Since I didn't care about where I sat, I chose to sit at the bar and was immediately seated. The waitress that waited on me was extremely busy, there wasn't a dull moment of her just sitting around, but she never made me feel like she was overwhelmed and juggled everything to perfection. She even told me about the Shrimp and Grits that was highly recommended. So I decided to get the Shrimp and Grits, Three Chicken Wings + Waffle, Mac and Cheese and a Chicken Noodle Soup. The Shrimp and Grits was extremely good, and as the waitress said "I highly recommend it." The Chicken Wings were lackluster, however, it was extremely dry, and lacked flavor. The Mac and Cheese and Chicken Noodle Soup were also really good. Overall, I can definitely see the appeal of this place in the early hours of the morning about spending a night going out, but I can also see the appeal of someone wanting to go during lunch or dinner when they're craving some comfort foods. I used to order the Chicken and French Toast (made with delicious thick cut Challah bread, YUM!) with a side of collards (Awesome, when cooked right) or mac and cheese (DELICIOUS!) but now I get the shrimp and grits (BEST THING ON THE MENU!!!!). I used to love coming to Midnight Diner when I came in town but the management has made this my last visit. Food was still good but they are not giving you the value for your dollar anymore. Small portions are not what this place was known for but now leaving still hungry is very possible. I ordered a half order of french toast to go with my eggs grits livermush and biscuit and they brought me out a single slice of texas toast size challah bread cut in half and said that was two slices of French toast. Then the waitress tried to tell me that was how they always did it. I may not live here anymore but I didn't go senile. That is not true, the last time I came (last year) my friend ordered the full order of French toast and it wouldn't fit on the plate because there was four full slices of french toast on the plate. I should have taken a picture of the poor pathetic slice of bread cut in half but I was hungry and ate it before I thought to take a picture. I went to this place on a Sunday, mid afternoon. It was packed. I was visiting out of town from Atlanta, and I need a quick place to grab a bit to eat. I found this place on Yelp. Long story short, the experience was so-so. The food was okay. I had an omelette with grits (which were amazing). My main issue with this place was the staff. There just seemed to be a lot going on. There was a lot of playing in, scratching, and flinging of hair... and not a hair net or plastic glove to be found. I just had to look away. I have no problem with hair styles (I wear a braided bun myself), but the hygiene (or lack there of) in that place was terrible. My family & I were in town visiting from Florida. Some people from our hotel recommended this diner as an after hours spot because it's 24-hours. We visited on a Saturday night around 12:00 am. There was a line outside for entry, but we only waited about 10 minutes. The server was friendly and accurate with our orders. With a name like this, there should be no illusions about what you'll get here. I've only come after a late night out and I always get the same thing: chicken and waffles. The menu is expansive, but I couldn't tell you what the other food tastes like. My usual is so delicious, I doubt I'll ever expand my palate here. The servers are always incredibly patient, especially considering the type of patrons they're serving (drunk, obnoxious, hungry people).
