I hadn't been here in a very long time and happy to see it hasn't changed. Came on a Sunday just before it got crowded (10:45). Hostess and server were very friendly. The place is still super cute, retro, and just comfortable. I ordered a hot chocolate and it came out with whipped cream and chocolate syrup-delicious. I kept it simple and made my own omelet-egg whites, bacon and cheese. Definitely one of the best omelets in town. Fluffy and not overcooked at all. Grits 10/10 as always, and the biscuits were hot and fluffy. Great place to catch up with friends, not feel rushed, and the prices/portions are fabulous! Definitely adding it back in rotation.
We went here after a Jazz Event downtown around 9:30p. This was my first time at this location, and I was surprised in 2 different ways. Surprise #1 (bad) they don't have free parking unless you can find random street parking. The lot beside their location is a paid parking only with a 2hr minimum. Surprise #2 (good) THEY SELL BEER! (the other locations don't) Our waitress Key was polite, attentive, and had pretty good recommendations. The suggestion of Country Fried Steak w/ their Mac n Cheese and Potato Salad were really good. Potato Salad can be a hit or miss at some places especially late at night but theirs was surprisingly good. I'm used to Chicken and Waffles coming with tenders but they switch it up with fresh fried WHOLE wings. The food was fresh, HOT, and good. Could they use a bit of interior upgrades/straightening up? Yes. They also don't take any mobile pay so please have your physical card with you. 4/5 Overall
This place is kind of a landmark. Having moved the actual structure to a new location a few years ago, it's still just as popular. I think the food is good but nothing over the top as outstanding. Service has always been great and the staff is well trained to calm the chaos of those in the wait line (in a good way) so just know don't joke around with the host or hostess. They have a job to do. LOL. The restaurant is clean and always looks well taken care of. They have limited seating for a large group but they will seat you near one another if you're willing to split into groups. Over all it's fun to go to a diner but the food is very basic diner food that is good.
I am from Philly and I feel like one of the things that Charlotte is missing is good diner food. That being said, midnight diner met all my requirements for a fantastic diner experience! My husband and I sat at the counter on New Year's Day and had very quick service. The woman working the register who took our order was like a drill Sargent in the best way possible. She was telling everyone where the food goes and making sure that everything was running quickly and smoothly. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with hash browns and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. The biscuits are clearly home made and the sausage gravy was perfect. They were not stingy with the gravy which I appreciate because I usually have to ask for extra at most places. The hash browns were perfectly crispy and hit the spot big time. I will most definitely be back in the future!!
Went here Sunday a little after 8:30 pm for dinner. No wait time and immediately had our orders taken upon sitting down. Staff were all friendly. Loved the retro decor and setup inside. Couldn't decide between the Spaghetti dinner or Steak, but ultimately chose the New York strip steak (9/10), cooked how I asked and seasoned pretty well. For my sides I got Broccoli and Mac and cheese they were both decent. Def see myself returning, I enjoyed my meal and the overall atmosphere. My overall rate of experience : 8.5/10
Stopped into Midnight Diner for lunch while I was in Charlotte for the night, and it ended up being an awesome find. It's right across the street from the Hyatt House, so the location couldn't have been any more convenient. Walked in, grabbed a seat at the bar, and had my food in front of me within about 10 minutes, perfect for a quick bite. I went with the Cool Ranch grilled chicken Wrap and a Diet Coke. They've got a huge menu, but the wrap was a great choice: super tasty, and the fries were excellent. Total came out to around $15 after tip, which honestly feels like a steal these days. Service was friendly and on point, and I really don't have a single complaint. Plus, the fact that they're open 24/7 makes it an easy go-to whether you're grabbing lunch, a late-night bite, or anything in between. If you're in town, Midnight Diner is a no-brainer.
During the big snow storm of 2026 I was stranded mid-journey and wound up at a hotel very near here. I was SO happy they were open! Apparently they NEVER close! They had a good and steady crowd and the food was greats. Charming retro diner vibe, friendly service and tasty food. These chicken tenders were fabulous!
As we were looking for a quick bite to eat before leaving Charlotte, Midnight Diner was right down the street from our hotel so we stopped in around 9:30am. Thankfully, we didn't have to wait and were seated right away. One thing about Charlotte is they play good music at any establishment so we definitely enjoyed the R&B vibes. The menu was pretty normal for a diner so I ordered the Western Omelette with hash browns and wheat toast. It was served very quickly and tasted pretty good. The eggs were very fluffy and there was cheese and veggies throughout the entire omelette. Midnight Diner is open 24 hours and seems to be the place to be for breakfast and late night eats as well but we definitely enjoyed the food and the service.
This is my kids favorite place to eat after church. We usually come early but today we came after second service. Our family if 5 didn't have To wait even at 1230 pm ! Service was fast and tasty as always. They are now playing hype music sort of giving day party brunch vibes with the music. Food was tasty and well presented. I only could grab a couple pics because we started eating immediately . Will be back again soon.
Decided to bring some friends here around 9ish in the morning. I'm pretty sure we beat the rush because there was no wait but by the time we left there was about a 30 minute wait. Everything came out pretty fast and everyone loved their food. It was my friend first time and she absolutely loved it. You can never go wrong with this place. It's like one of the places you go to when you just want something good and simple for breakfast. My biscuit was really good and honestly I could have had two of them. The grits are chefs kiss is you like them creamy. Never had anything bad here! If anything the grits and fried chicken are two must haves when you go! read more

We were in town for business and we were staying at a near by hotel. The Midnight Diner was recommended by a friend. The atmosphere was friendly and inviting and the true diner experience. All of the staff were friendly and inviting. The food was AMAZING I had pecan Belgian waffles with fried chicken wings with honey butter and syrup. So good. One of my coworkers had the shrimp and grits. She let me taste it and oh my goodness so good. A few of our other coworkers joined us and they enjoyed their food just as much as we did. The food is made to order so it is always hot when you get it. If you are visiting Charlotte and looking for a really good place to eat. Midnight Diner is the place and a plus they are open 24 hrs. read more
Finally made it to midnight diner! There was no line when we arrived around 9:15pm on a Saturday but when the hornets game ended the line grew to about 50 people. It's pretty lively inside and the food comes out pretty quickly. The wait staff was extremely pleasant and efficient. The food was great! Tasted just like a good home cooked meal. The breakfast was a nice treat for dinner instead of the typical dinner food. read more

Stopped by the Midnight Diner for lunch with our kids on a whim. Pros: didn't wait long for a table and staff was helpful and quick. We received the wrong bill, but the staff quickly fixed it with no issue. Food was decent - typical diner food which was exactly what we were looking for with a quick lunch. We ordered two of the buffalo chicken sandwiches, the kids hotdog and kids chicken tenders. Kids were happy as were we with the portions and taste. Cons: Cleanliness of the place really hurt it for me, particularly the bathrooms. I get with high traffic they won't be pristine, but this was particularly dirty. Soaps and paper towels all over the bathrooms were wet and were being man handled by customers. The toilets were dirty enough to not even use them. The booths needed an additional wipe down as well which also made me wary, especially in flu/cold season. Not sure the food outweighed cleanliness factor here, so likely would not return in the future which is a bummer. read more

Old school diner, just what we needed before a game at Bank of America Stadium. Outside and inside both have that 1950s diner feel. Not too many booths but we didn't have a wait. Very friendly waitress. We were not rushed, the food was just quick. I had that veggie burger and it wasn't the typical diner veggie burger soft and falling apart. It was delicious and firm/ well made. Stayed together while I ate it. Came with crinkle cuts fries, a cut I personally hate but had nice seasoning. Husband said his chicken was some of the best he ever had. My son's grilled cheese was good. Bathroom was a little run down, could've used some attention read more

I had court today and decided to go for so breakfast. I saw that the Midnight Diner was open and saw that there was not a wait. Upon entering I noticed that it was very clean. I'm got prompt service and ordered the bubba with hash browns all the way and a chicken wing. As a picture show they are extremely delicious. The hot sauce came in handy for the gravy as it was a little thicker than normally used to. Service was excellent as they kept coming by to refill my coffee. I would highly recommend coming to the iconic landmark. read more

One of the very best diners which I've ever had the pleasure of dining in. Phenomenal menu, top notch service and excellent food!! Do not miss this place, regardless of your palate. The steak and eggs, grits, biscuit and home fries are out of this world!! read more

Expect a wait if you're going after midnight. Greeted by security guard before entering. Can order to-go or dine in. 1/2 Chicken platter was decent. A few pieces of the chicken did not taste fresh, but like it was sitting under a warmer for a while. Flavor was pretty bland. Fried fish and shrimp were nicely fried. Biscuit was a basic buttermilk type. Diner-like atmosphere and pretty big, so it can be a bit loud depending where you sit. Menu has a plethora of options! read more
I've patronized several times over the years but have never left a review. Unfortunately, the last couple of visits have been hit or miss. Usually any wait is due to being short staffed. The better looking picture is from dining in and sitting at the bar. The cheese could've been a little more melted but I didn't care. I was hungry. The picture of grits was from a take out order. I don't know what the problem was but I regretted not checking the order before I left. Parking was better at the former location. Sometimes the take out line is longer than the dine in line because of them being short staffed; you can't just go to the counter to place an order. You have to wait for them to say you can come in, and you still may have to wait some. Like I said...hit or miss. read more
Midnight Diner is one of my favorite places to go to while in Charlotte! Their shrimp and grits do not miss! Their onion rings are really good too. And their waffles are bomb! Unfortunately their bang bang chicken sandwich wasn't worth getting and it made my boyfriend sick so I don't recommend that. But of the many times that we have been here we haven't had any issues with anything else on the menu. The ambiance is very typical of a diner friendly but classic. There is booth seating as well as bar seating. Service is consistently nice and quick! Highly recommend midnight diner after a concert or show at the spectrum center as it's just a short walk away! read more

In hindsight, I probably should have opted for a classic burger and hot dog. Midnight Diner frequently appears on Charlotte's "Must Try" lists, and for good reason--it's a charming tribute to 1950s America nestled amidst the city's modern skyline. The retro silver façade and make it stand out as a nostalgic oddity in the heart of Uptown. For anyone who has never experienced a vintage-style diner, Midnight Diner offers a delightful glimpse into the past. Having grown up with a similar spot in my hometown--now, unfortunately, closed--this visit felt like a welcome trip down memory lane. Despite its old-fashioned decor, the booths and seating were impressively well-maintained, reflecting a genuine attention to upkeep and comfort. Our server, Kayla, was an absolute delight--warm, attentive, and consistently cheerful throughout our meal. Her thoughtful service added to the overall charm of the experience. We decided to order a variety of dishes to get a true sense of what the diner had to offer: a classic breakfast plate, a slider appetizer, and a quarter fried chicken plate with sides. Overall, the food was satisfying, though not without its highs and lows. The breakfast plate was straightforward--hard to go wrong with eggs and liver mush--but nothing that set it apart from any other breakfast house. The sliders, however, were the highlight for me. Though my wife found the buns "too soggy," I actually appreciated their softness, which paired nicely with the generous helping of onions and flavorful sauce. They were good enough to make me wish I had ordered a full-sized burger. The onion rings on the side were also noteworthy--crispy, golden, and perfectly seasoned. Unfortunately, the fried chicken didn't live up to the enticing aroma that filled the air as we approached the diner. The wait staff was very friendly from the moment we walked in the door. Plenty of staff so we didn't have to wait for food or drinks. It's located downtown so there were some sketchy people outside no fault of the restaurant. Free 2 hour parking available for customers. Large food portions! We had the greek omelette and tall stack pancakes. The outlet had feta cheese, tomatoes, spinach, and onions. it also came with hashbrowns and a biscuit. The coffee was good. There was only cream and sugar available for the coffee no stevia or splenda. I'd visit again if I was staying downtown. read more
After a late night Uptown Charlotte, Midtown dinner is the perfect ending to an eventful night. I thought the diner has a large selection of breakfast inspired foods, I chose the chicken tenders and fries. It didn't disappoint. I had buffalo dipping sauce on the side. Those who joined me ordered pancakes with sausage, shrimp and grits, eggs and chicken wings. Let's just say we ended the night with a table full of happy plates. We decided to give the Midnight Diner, close to midnight, a try. Our server, "Angie," was phenomenal. The menu was very large; it took a minute to overlook it. Meanwhile, other servers were bringing different plates out to other tables. Might I add, they all looked tasty? We asked the server for her recommendations, while she was telling us we spilled our order out. She gave us a significant amount of sauce needed for our meals. The diner was decently fulfilled; it brought us back to what a true diner should be like. The restrooms, along with what was seen by the naked eye, were really clean. Our table gave it a 9 out of 10 for our meals. Although our server was 10 out of 10. We recommend checking this diner out. read more

Midnight has been a staple in Charlotte since I can remember. It does get packed and the service can get a bit slow but baby that food never lacks! It's that old diner feel with the comfy booths and the swivel bar stools that has been the same since forever! But back to the food. A couple weeks ago Ai went back after a hiatus - just lots of work and travel- and got fried chicken with eggs and grits. IDK WHO WAS COOKING THAT DAY BUT THEY NEED A RAISE! My chip was perfectly fried and tender - simply amazing! My grits were thick, creamy, and perfectly mixed like grandmas, and the biscuit was a buttery pillow of incredible goodness!!!!!!! Everything was so amazing!!!!!!!! If you haven't been (or haven't been back) the time is now. Warm up to a cup of truck driver coffee, fried chicken, and grits - the best in the city! read more

Amazing food! Visited this quaint diner in uptown Charlotte during a visit for a competition. It has an old school 50's feel and fantastic food and quick and efficient service. Had the chicken and waffles and returned for the chicken and grits. My picky teens asked to eat there numerous times. They accommodated our special requests and allergies. read more

I always get a good meal from here. Everything on the menu is good and the GRITS!!! Omg the grits are good by themselves. I've never had grits that taste as great as theirs. Service is always great and fast and it's always packed so you know it's good. read more

This diner in Charlotte is very nostalgic and vintage looking. Now l came at 7:15 am so they were not busy yet. Been here for a few days for work and I've seen lines of people waiting to get in. So I definitely picked the right time to come. Feel like it took a minute for my server to warm up to me. But in the end she was smiling and nice. Ordered 2 eggs, hashbrowns, and 2 shortcakes. The pancakes were delicious! Me eggs were cooked perfectly. The hashbrowns had to much oily butter for my liking. The top crispy parts were great but the underneath was greasy. Coffee was great for a diner. Not bitter or burnt flavored. Cool little spot! read more
This diner looks like it is right out of the 1950's with the red and black decor and red neon lights. So adorable! We split the scrumptious fried chicken, green beans, Mac and cheese as well as the spaghetti. They were both delicious! The loaded fries as an appetizer were good, but the firecracker shrimp was delicious! It had just the right of sauce and spice. If you are looking for simple but good breakfast food, this is the place to be! I've gone to midnight diner several times over the last couple years. The old spot and the new spot are exactly the same, there is always a wait, you see the craziest people but service and food stayed consistently good! Prices are reasonable, the old diner decoration and furnitures give you all the nostalgic feels. Don't sleep on midnight diner next time you think about breakfast, brunch, dinner or a late night snack, the menu provides all of that! read more

Very nostalgic building, but definitely needs updating and deep cleaning. Music was very surprising. Nostalgic 50s and 70s. If you arrive after a certain hour (after sunset) you're not allowed to sit outside. The security guard is nearby (sitting at the bar, eating). ***Our waitress was very sweet and helpful. **** The milkshakes were good (chocolate and strawberry). It took longer for fries than the rest of our order. Fries were okay. Definitely a 5/10. Not sure we would come back. read more

It was hot in Midnight Diner - But the experience was a top notch 5!!!! A little heat never hurt anyone! If it hadn't been raining they did have outdoor seating options. My eating companion and I ate at the bar and I am telling you this was the most authentic and down to earth experience of my visit to North Carolina. The servers, food options, and retro elements make this place exceptional! I ordered chicken and a waffle with a half sweet / half unsweet tea to go. Super good! I highly recommend Midnight Diner!!! It's a must!! Most of downtown Charlotte is full of hipster style pubs and 20 somethings. BUT, Midnight Diner is a place for the rest of us!!!! Visit!!! read more

Was turned away from dining room seating at 3:00 AM. Many open booths (not including the social distanced ones) and no line. Why is this not disclosed on your website or Yelp page?

it says sunday closes at midnight , monday is 24hours and the rest of the week closes at 4:30AM
