This place is a gem. Had lunch there yesterday. Lunch specials were awesome. We had the shrimp po boy, chicken salad sandwich and the pulled pork. Side salad was fresh, crispy and generous. Midtown Eats is a great place to get some chow. I refer to food sometimes as chow because it means it gives you that extra comforting feeling. My family ordered the Shrimp Po Boy, the Mafia sub, a smokehouse lightening sandwich, boneless wings, and cheese curds. At first glance you are a little skeptical about this restaurant, located across from Seven Eleven, temporary sign, shared location with a bar. However, that did not stop the Mrs and I from walking in and taking a seat. Oliver our server recommended the Nawlin's burger and we both thought hey, good idea! Two handmade patties, topped with grilled shrimp, melted smoke Gouda and chipotle mayo on a Kaiser roll. Yep, it was DELICIOUS and to add to my Fatboy delight a side of fresh cut fries! Julie was the grill master of our delights today and when I took one bite of that burger, I told her that she needed to enter into the best burger contest of Tide Water Restaurants Yes it was that good. Service is untrained, clerk did not know menu and spending time on her cell phone. So at the cash register I settled on the burger off the lunch special it came w/drink and choice of 1of 3 sides so I chose fries, she ringed me up I paid and added a tip. Did not discuss a drink, so address her about the drink ahead of my order being ready. She said she had to charge me I told I have the lunch special it comes w/drink so she walk a good ways around the counter to view the lunch special on the advertising chalk board and goes back and proceed to ring me up. She says that'll be $2.86 I expressed I'm not paying additional charge. So she said I am knew and not going to lose my job. So I told her that you don't have to make the decision get the supervisor. I only ordered a veggie pizza and a side salad. The salad was great, but the pizza was disappointing. The pizza crust was heavy, thick, and tasted very sour. Also, walking by the back bar side, it was extremely crowded. If you're concerned about social distancing, I would not recommend going to the bar side. read more

So decided to give them another try. A little confusing one side dark with tvs, the other side looking like a diner bright. We walk in cooks in back literally yelling at each other. The gal tells us to sit down anywhere she will bring us a menu. There is no one in restaurant, clue number one. We sit down and wait, use the bathroom sit back down and wait. Look at the menu online. Let me start by saying that there was one guy running the place when I came in, he was cooking as well as serving and sweet as can be. I started with an order of crab dip, it was FULL of crab meat, probably the most crab meat i've ever seen served in a dip, which is awesome. The thing is it kinda lacked flavor which is so sad bc like i said, they were not stingy. I think there may have just been too much cream cheese, but I really wanted to like it. For my entree I had a shrimp po boy and fries, i have a hard time turning a po boy down whenever i see it on a menu. I initially came here for a burger but half the menu was seafood so I figured maybe that was their thing. While the shrimp was fried nicely, it also lacked flavor and the fries followed suit. I will say the remoulade was perfect and kinda made up for the lack of flavor in the shrimp. First time visiting this place and was disappointed. When you work in the restaurant industry, the least you could do is make your guests feel welcome. We got a bland hello and a stale faced waitress that looked like she hated being there. Upon sitting down my mom asked for decaf coffee to which the gal said "noooooo", didn't say sorry we don't just "noooooo". That was already strike one. This place serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We were hoping to get a late breakfast around 10:45 but it seems that they don't serve breakfast all day. We dropped our menu and started to leave. The waitress didn't apologize at all, didn't even say a word to us. We could have stayed and ordered lunch but the cold attitude and unfriendly demeanor was what made us leave. I. Give. Up. You need a secret decoder ring to eat at this place. Given the awesome reviews, I met a colleague for lunch here a couple months ago. I had a pretty tasty burger with some average pasta salad. A very weird experience - small place, and in the middle of our meal someone literally walked in with a shopping bag full of ground beef - the big packs you might buy at Sam's or Costco - and handed it to the cooks. Overall, the burger was tasty enough that I mentioned it to partner and he was interested enough to go try it. Since then, we've tried to eat here three times. The first time we went on a Tuesday around 1. Closed. The second time we went on a Friday around 4. Closed. The most recent was a Monday at 11. Closed. There are no posted hours on the storefront, and obviously all of the times I just mentioned are included in the posted hours here on Yelp. I get that when you're a small business, you need to have some days built in to have off - tons of spots are closed on some combination of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. But I've never tried to eat at a place three times and had it been closed each time. If it was closed, there was at least a sign explaining WHY they were closed and when they'd reopen. The only positive about my experience here is that each time this place was closed, I picked another Yelp bookmark to try and found the amazing Momo's Cafe, the Wonderful Restaurant, and Mi Rancho. read more

I had the taste for a poorboy sandwich and to my surprise this restaurant happens to make them and I will say it was delicious. I can't eat shell fish, but that did not stop me they make an awesome flounder poorboy sandwich. A little out of the way in the same center as Stratford University off J. Clyde Morris, Midtown Eats puts out high end breakfasts and lunches in a low budget environment. Service is first rate, and the repartee with the owners/chefs of the house are worth the price of admission. They are totally into their mission to create tasty meals with basic ingredients, right where you can see them at their craft. Bro Lo and I split the Breakfast Burrito and Breakfast Sandwich, and they gladly plated them the way we intended to eat them. Both were loaded with Egg, Onion, Pepper, Cheese, while the Burrito had Sausage, Black Beans, Corn and Guac, and the Sandwich thick cut Bacon on Toasted Rye. We liked both, but agreed the Burrito was the stronger entry. Coffee was fresh and had an unusual taste from whatever beans they used. It flowed freely throughout the meal. If you like knotty pine paneling and local artwork hanging on the walls, this is your place. They were open on July 4th because they needed to be, so if you like to support your local businesspeople, give Midtown Eats a visit or two, and tell your friends about it. They also offer a free Tapas/Small Plate spread complete with alcohol for a cool brunch. Best to call to confirm when that is happening. Honestly, it's the best burger I have had since moving to the East Coast. They make some amazing food here and only a fool would go past this place to visit any of the burger chains that litter the Hampton Roads area. I have been in for dinner once as well and the food was equally good as their lunches at an equally generous price! They post their specials daily online, and I have added them to my dedicated follows so that it pops up on my phone when they post. I hope that EVERYONE gets into Midtown Eats. Midtown Eats, American Fusion deep in the heart of Hampton Roads. Wow, wasn't expecting much from this place based on the outside. Its hidden in a shopping center off J Clyde (near Stratford). The sign says Midtown Eats (vinyl sign). Walk into restaurant and they were playing cajun music, the kitchen is in the main area, the chef greets you and makes you feel like you are at home. We got there and less then a minute later the chef gave us a sample of the chorizo gravy. Wow oh wow it was good. Since the menu changes every time, that morning I had the Redneck Benedict. It is a platter with jalapeño cornbread, with egg and chorizo sausage gravy smothering the entire dish. Wow it was so good I wanted to lick the plate clean. The chef told us we could order off the menu or he would create something special for us. Not too many places do that anymore. Most definitely coming back to this place. I'd give them 7 stars. Some odd year(s) ago, my 1st experience with Midtown Eats was pulling up after seeing a good review in the news, not realizing they were about to close. They could've served a TV dinner at that point and I would've been alright with it, however the food is pretty d**n good. Good food is always key, but people tend to remember how they're treated and how they feel during a visit. I'd been out of the general area for a while and stopped in for Saturday brunch. Always on the lookout for what unique item will be on the menu. I went with a special French toast, with honey peanut butter topping and fried banana. Somehow, it was fused into a funnel cake as well. It came with bacon, no eggs. It was suggested by the young lady I wouldn't even need the eggs. I was also able to sub the bacon out for pulled chicken. Did I mention the food here is pretty d**n good? May be an understatement. I haven't been a regular, as my schedule and locale didn't align, but my 1st impression of this business defined the ownership. Stopped by for breakfast for the first time, and it will NOT be the last time! I got the bacon, egg, and cheese on sourdough. The bread thickness was perfect, the crunch on it was bomb. The bacon!!!! was thick, tasty, and the perfect amount of pieces. The cheese, was also perfect, not too little, not too much. And the egg was fresh and softly scrambled. My first BITE was love! lol This was served with their home has browns, and AHHH geesh, it was well seasoned, perfect size. The food isn't boring, the combinations they put together are amazing. Blackened gulf shrimp over hoppin john is amazing. My husband loves the redneck benedict. The owner has told us both times if something isn't right let them know. They will make it right. They don't want you leaving unhappy. They even made a special french toast meal for my 6 year old. Ordered carryout...So this place is reasonable for the price BUT the food is not good. The chorizo burger has potential to be good but it just isn't there. The chicken Philly is dry and tasteless. The chicken is shredded and tastes like it's boiled. Just don't order it! Cheesecurds were okay, nothing special. We Ordered two sodas and they were out of syrup so that was five dollars down the drain. You would think that they would see that it was clear coming out. The sauce has a little kick which I loved. Highly recommend for cheat days. REDNECK BENEDICT: I enjoyed this more than the burger above. The sauce was great! I think this place has great sauces that are flavorful, heavy, and with a little spice kick. The Shrimp po' boy sandwich was good ^_^ BUT everything else was okay....the mozzarella sticks came out hot but the cheese inside wasn't melted at all :( it was kind of like a breaded cheese stick. (Yes I know that's basically what a mozzarella sticks are, but they should be a little soft) The fries were kind of sad. No crunch to them it was just oily potato sticks. We were the second table to walk in. The first group was probably 8 people. It took them a while to get to us. We ordered and we were literally just waiting and waiting... it was a simple order of a burger and two sandwiches. It took them an hour and thirty minutes to bring them out. Never even refilled our water while waiting. The taste was acceptable. Too much breading on all of their fried stuffs. Oyster was all dried up. I had to ask for forks and knives. When we got the bill, it was ridiculously large. $58. When we asked him to redo the math, it came out to $40. I think the place has a bar as well and it was probably the reason why we were treated the way we were. Anyways, there is no excuse for what happened. read more

There is pro's and con's to this place. I'll start with the pro's! The food was delicious. I got the BLT with their mac & cheese which was awesome. My boyfriend got the hamburger steak which he said was good as well. Our waitress was very friendly. Now here's the con's: The service was super slow. We went on a Tuesday night and there was only 2 other tables. Our waitress looked like she was the only one answering the phones and to go orders so maybe they are just understaffed. There's a lot of traffic in and out of the door due to the people going into the bar area. Our food and appetizer took very long to come out. OK, if you go here, order the specials, which are normally written on the black boards around the restaurant. The menu is ok, but I did not see anything that stuck out to me. Secondly; this place is one of those "hole-in-wall" type places so if you blink you will miss it. I had the smoke house burger and it was AWESOME! Two all beef patties with sauce lettuce, tomato with some really good slaw. My daughter had a BLT (nothing special about it) and her friend had the Nawlins burger. This place is a real find! I cannot say enough for the overall quality of food. The menu is not deep, but some offerings are very sophisticated. The Nawlins burger may be the best burger I have ever eaten in my life...no lie and you should try one. UPDATE August 2017: Have moved to new location as a joint venture with The Sandbar on J. Clyde Blvd. At first this sounds crazy, but their part of the facility is considerably nicer than their prior location. The good news is the food is just great...exactly like it was. They are also open for Brunch on the weekends so you have opportunity to get some of the best and most interesting food in Newport News. read more
