I had two street tacos - one Carne Asada and one Al Pastor. Both tacos were good. The menu said they came with salsa but I wasn't paying attention and I grabbed some from the bar. If I came back I'd probably get them both dry since there was so much. It was good but the carne asada one in particular was super hot. Prices were good and the staff was friendly. The food is mediocre; not bad, but not great. They have a salsa there that is above all other spicy salsas I've ever had at a Mexican spot. The jimica aqua fresca tastes like a non-alcoholic sangria. I would not recommend it. They were out of the pork tamales, so we settled for the vegetarian option, which was okay. The burrito was edible, nothing to brag about. We had some time to spare time between medical appointments and we were a little hungry and as we didn't want to lose our parking spot we took a little stroll up J street and happened upon Midtown Taqueria. We decided to wander in and share a carne asada super nacho and an ice cold Coke Zero. Service was very friendly and prompt and our order did not take too long as they were in between the lunch and dinner rush. The restaurant was small and very clean. I am currently sitting here in this wonderful establishment, and they have fabulous food!! Along with the to-die-for food, they also have such a clean place. Everything is wiped down and stocked. I used to work in a restaurant, and I will say they do a great job at what they do. Also, the people are SO kind! I really wanted to like this place again, but under the new ownership, it's just not it. I ordered carne asada fries and swapped in lengua. That substitution cost $5 extra, which is wild considering most spots charge maybe $1-$2. For that kind of upcharge, you expect something worth it, but it wasn't. The fries were soggy and tasted like they came straight out of a freezer bag, the beans had that canned taste, and the portion size was weak. The box wasn't even filled. The only bright spot was the lengua itself, which was actually solid and had good texture. The lengua itself was the reason I gave 2 star. The salsas didn't help. The habanero had real heat (which I appreciate), but it was basically just heat, no depth, no flavor behind it. The green salsa tasted off, almost bitter. It was definitely sitting out too long and the ice did not keep it cool. Service didn't do them any favors either. I asked about getting a vampiro to try their tripa, it was a flat "no" with zero effort to accommodate. Not a great look. Making a crispy tortilla with cheese and meat on top is not the craziest thing to ask for. As someone who grew up eating this kind of food, I can tell the difference between something made with care and something that feels watered down, and this leans heavily toward the latter. It just doesn't have the flavor you expect from a good taqueria. I don't even feel motivated to try anything else here, which says a lot considering I live walking distance away. If you actually want good carne asada fries, better portions, and real flavor, go to Chitas on 21st and Q. I used to go all the time when I lived nearby, and now, even living closer to Midtown Taqueria, I'd rather make the drive back Chitas than come here again. read more

Torta at first glance was different so I opened it up and the meat was finally chopped up a little pieces like I feed my dog of something other than Carnitas I ordered Carnitas and I think it was what they do steak but it is so tiny and thinly chopped up has no moisture in it it was like eating a soggy mushy bun with a bunch of mayonnaise the meat though there's not enough coverage for the meat the guacamole and the mayonnaise just made the bun completely soggy tomato was scarce and what lettuce they did put on it it must've been completely wet for this bun to be this soggy ..,the meat had no flavor this was a waste of $13 kind of weird because I had a good one here, anyway don't waste your money on that especially the steak if this is how they serve it disgusting I think if people want you to chop up or mince their food up they'll let you know! . WRONG MEAT SUNCE I ORDERED THE PORK CARNITAS. Chili Relleno was fine . Well I was looking forward to this food just like the last time and came out very disappointed. Here is my two cents on the food quality and the quality of such.. Delivery was done by GrubHub, which was unsatisfactory instead of handing it to the client. They dropped it off at the door and walked away without even knocking on the door, letting them know it was there. ... I order three items a fish taco a crispy taco and a California burrito... NOTE: I hate that all these restaurants use premade crispy shells for their taco shells... they all break when you pick them up and try to eat the food so they're actually useless... it tasted so much better and was so much easier to eat when they used to actually fried their own taco shell..... plus all the taco shells are always cold when they put the ingredients inside the shells.... My chili Verde taco was only good in the respect that there were a large chunk of pork in the taco .... but as far as flavor goes, the meat itself is pretty mild or tasteless. The only thing that gave it flavor was the sour cream, some little bit of guacamole, and lettuce .. The fish taco was just mediocre....You could actually taste the flavor of the fish in the soft taco shell, which of course when you picked it up, fell apart in your hand ... the size of the quantity of the fish less than even an ounce... I also got the California burrito .. it said with french fries, who the hell thought that they were actually put a couple of french fries inside the damn burrito.. what moron came up with this idea french fries in a burrito.. So there were chunks of actually beef you could see the burrito was not worth the $12.50 for it ... So if you're looking for authentic burritos pass on this place because it's not worth the money or the effort .. read more

I primarily order through a delivery service and tonight, I placed an order from Midtown Taqueria and experienced a disappointing meal. Food not hot. And their was a distinct acrid taste that I haven't tasted before. The ingredients used may have been expired. I don't know. They have new owners and ..ugh, it's not great. :( 1) I've been coming here since it became a taqueria (RIP Sidewalk Pizza). Their chips were my favorite chips ever. I'd go in and buy big bags for parties. We went in today to try the new ownership and....bagged store bought chips. Not fresh/in house made chips. They have bland bagged chips. And not even good bagged chips. I was so sad. 2) Food was small portions. We went for breakfast and the normally large breakfast burritos were about half the size as usual, but more expensive. The tortillas tasted not great and def aren't the same ones the old owner used. It was super disappointing. I had wanted to give them another shot for lunch or dinner but the chip situation is killing it for me. I might try a main meal at some point but so far it's not looking too good. If the new owners read this......please go back to the old chips. Or at least make your own in house. (New staff are super nice and they have done some nice updates to the space....but I want the comfort food I've been eating for 15 years if I'm being honest). read more

Hubby had pork chili verde plate and I had the carne asada tostada. Both were delicious- perfectly seasoned, fresh and served warm. Although hubby's favorite chile verde is at Tres Hermanos, he found this one very tasty and surprised me by cleaning his plate. Free chips and a variety of yummy salsas completed our meal. I made the mistake of making an order to go! Three crunchy tacos and a tostado. Seeing as I live 5 blocks away I wasn't expecting any problems with the shells; well, I was very wrong. It took me under 5 minutes to get home and none of the tacos could even be picked up to be eaten because the shells fell apart. We came to Midtown Taqueria after a family walk around the local neighborhood. This was our first time, and we came without reading any reviews on Yelp. I'm glad we did because we really enjoyed our experience. I tried the grilled chicken quesadilla (also available as a super quesadilla) with a side of guacamole. My husband ordered the California burrito with asada. We both really enjoyed the food. Everything was seasoned well and you could actually see the seasoning in the meat. All of the salsas were fresh and tasty - my favorite was the tomatillo salsa. We started chatting with the woman who had taken our order and it turns out she is the wife of the owner. I love getting to support local, family owned establishments. Our quick conversation really stood out and every employee that came out greeted us and asked if we liked the food. It's important to make your guests feel welcome, and I appreciate the commitment to their food tasting good. Also - it was only $21 for our whole ticket including the beer and soda!
