Yikes, this place lived up to its name. I had some time to kill in the evening, and found that Midwest Sad had later hours, and was queer/woman owned. Fantastic. That's as far as it got.. When I walked in, the barista blankly stared at me until I said I was ready to order, and didn't say anything when I left. The air conditioning was out, and it was warmer inside than it was outside. They had a sign that said it was a limited menu, which was fine, but the carrot cake bars tasted like straight butter, and was hard/cold. I'm not entirely sure how this found its way onto my Wisconsin bucket list, but this is a charming little bakery close to Milwaukee. They have tons of sweet and savory snack options, I went with savory for a lunchtime sandwich. They also had a ton of delicious looking pastries pie resisted the temptation. They have Wi-Fi and a board games if you want to sit down and play, but it could also be a great coffee shop to get some work done in. I was excited for this place but slightly let down by 3/4 of the pastries we got. The scone was more cake texture that was hard dense. The almond matcha cookie was very dense on the inside and too thick. The cupcake was the best one we had but I thought again was very dense. The pastries were very flavorful but something about the texture did not sit well with me. They have great and friendly customer service though. read more

I'd have more pictures but usually forget to take them because I dive right into the treats! Son brought back some goodies from this newish Milwaukee bakery. Their almond matcha cookies were tip-top delicious and go for $5. The apple spice macarons go for $2 and were tip-top fresh and delicate. The spice level was very mild also. Great products experienced from here so far! read more

Does the Sad in Midwest Sad stand for something? It strikes me as a peculiar name for a bakery, and I know there must be a back story. Stellar ass desserts? Superb and delicious? Sweets all day? I've tried 4 different, scratch that, 5 different flavors of cookies here, and my cliff notes thoughts on each are: - apple spice macarons: tasted bland and just sugar flavored. Nice green color though. - vegan funfetti: sweet, sugary, fun appearance - potato chip chocolate chip: 2849949x too sweet. I couldn't even finish 1/4 of the cookie. Too cloyingly sweet. If my husband hadn't eaten the rest of the cookie sitting on the counter, I'm afraid it was going into the trash. - fluffernutter (pb marshmallow): soft texture, very, very sweet also. Could use more mallows. - almond matcha: by far my favorite of the bunch. Pleasant almond flavor and soft cookie texture. Sugar could be cut back though. $5 per big cookie. read more

Okay let's start off with the people working. Everyone was so nice right as we walked in. You can tell they are proud of their business. They make a lot of their dishes and sauces in house. My wife got the yo-crunch bowl and it was so delicious. It has freeze dried raspberries that add a little crunch and sweetness. But not to worry, it's not overly sweet. As for the build your own sandwich, this was right up my alley. I got the chili oil added and wooooh man, if you like spicy, add this to your sandwich. Great spot in lower level of 770 N Jefferson building! I tried the brownie, Caramel Apple Cinnamon Roll, banana pudding and banana pudding with peanut butter. The banana pudding lived up to the hype I heard from a couple of friends! The version with peanut butter was good, too, but I wanted a little more peanut butter. The brownie is BIG and a great value. It is crisp and crumbly and chocolatey and tasty! The Caramel Apple Cinnamon Roll was creative and delicious and finished off with glitter for fun presentation. I want to go back to try other treats and specials, as well as lunch items I've seen them post about on the socials. They are worth checking out and open until 6:00PM. I love this Cafe/Bar/Bakery with my whole heart. I love the constant rotation with the breakfast/lunch and Dinner Menu. Sam is a delight every time I go there. Exceptional service during the week. Plus! One of few places open on a Monday. I try to stop in once or twice a week and I always find something new to try. Sam Sandrin is the most lovely individual. I had a party and had her make some scones and lemon tartes for it. Not only was Sam kind and collaborative in coming up with dessert ideas and flavors for the party, but she was also really patient and kind and we finalized what I was looking for. The flavor of the scones and tartes exceeded expectations and everyone at my party loved them! These were definitely the best scones I've ever had!! First time here and the bakery was delicious! The matcha cookie was dense, flavorful and not too sweet. As an avid baker, I am usually put off by bakeries that wrap individual items in plastic wrap because it is sometimes a way to sell items that are not totally fresh so I was pleasantly surprised that the wrapped cinnamon roll was fresh, dense and wonderful. Midwest Sad. First I loved the name. But then I tasted the food. WOW. There aren't enough superlatives to describe this fantastic food. It is nostalgic in that it includes some of the foods you grew up with, but it's innovative in that chef Sammy Sandrin reinterprets them in ways that make them feel fresh. Your mom never made egg salad as delicious as this. I'm guessing the desserts include the best Wisconsin butter, cuz you can't get depth of flavor like this without great ingredients. And in every dish, she seems to add unique little flourishes. I grew up in Wisconsin, but have lived my adult life in Colorado. Still, even in super sunny Colorado, the Midwest SAD can get me.
