Last Wednesday, Chong Qing Hot Pot was hopping - today it was Ocean Garden (with Hong Kong BBQ in 2nd place). I couldn't believe how many people were waiting in line - b/c my friend & I thought the food was just ok. Then again, we're judging based on two dishes: Pogo chicken and beef noodle soup. I got the Pogo chicken b/c Michael L's review said it made him want to sing :) Pogo chicken is pieces of deep-fried dark meat that's been marinated. The chicken arrives hot but I thought the chicken got more flavorful as the chicken cooled down. The $5.50 dish is great value, and came with rice covered in some kind of brown mystery (but tasty) sauce, pickled diced (also mystery) veggies (tasted great with the chicken), baby bok choy (bland), and Szechuan-style green beans (yum!). We had a hard time deciding the 2nd dish so I asked the cashier for her recommendations. She said the beef noodle soup was very popular so that's what we got. When the soup arrived, I thought it looked similar to pho - but it definitely didn't taste like it. The broth was pretty salty and almost as dark as soy sauce. Neither of us cared for the beef - the texture was like braised beef and it had a stinky taste to it. I had a hard time finishing this one. Portions for both dishes were VERY generous and I'd strongly recommend going family-style at this place. The menu had a lot going on and based on the long lines, I'd definitely come back to try the other dishes - maybe beforehand walk around, see what everyone else was eating, and let that decide what I'm going to order :) Overall I'd give this place 3.5 stars.

Parking- if you park in their parking deck they will validate your ticket for 2 hours. Ambience- we went around dinner time and the restaurant is characterized by a very open concept space with low lighting sprinkled throughout and the usage of these tall long thick curtains help to contain the warm lighting within the space. The curtains are also used to presumably hide the entrance to the kitchen and by hiding the kitchen it sort of feels like that much more of a mysterious, sultry, and calm experience. Duck fat scallion pancake- simple, wonderful crisp, light onion flavor, a little greasy, but a wonderful starter. Sweet potato fries- thick cut Japanese sweet potato battered in a very crispy tempura-like batter dusted with ume/plum seasoning. The crisp on these fries was spectacular, very crunchy outside but a soft fry in the middle. The size and texture reminded me a lot of a Yuca fry actually. And then we asked for an extra side of the plum seasoning for dipping purposes. The plum seasoning was not what I expected- it was a sweet, very fine powder, almost like powdered sugar. When I think of plum, I was expecting Japanese pickled plum seasoning which is salty and briny and a little sweet. This was almost entirely just a sweet powder. It complimented the fries well but I can't help but feel like a more savory and salty seasoning would have paired better. Sichuan dry beef noodle- this was amazing. The beef was super super tender it almost melts in your mouth and has a wonderful savory flavor that really shines. And then the noodles underneath (we asked for thick noodles but you can also get thin) were thick almost like an udon but with more of a handmade texture that allowed the noodles to really hold onto the chili oil sauce. Overall, super flavorful dish that was hot and comforting and reminded me a lot of the flavor profile of a spicy beef stew. Braised pork belly over rice- another amazing dish. This was incredibly savory and the mixture of the tender pork belly with the pickled vegetables and the perfectly jammy egg made for a perfect bite. Black sesame tang yuan- this was the star dish in my opinion. I've never had a dessert with so many interesting flavor and texture and temperature elements. The tang yuan is a warm soft chewy sesame paste filled rice cake that offers a wonderful burst of nuttiness that contrasts super well with the creamy ice cream and the crunch from the candied peanut and the crispy shell. We were told the ice cream is actually Parmesan flavored- and while it sounds intimating, the flavor was super mild and it was almost akin to a frozen yogurt soft serve where there's a bit of tang but not overwhelming at all. And the cilantro just adds a perfect amount of savory. It's hard to explain but it's such a wonderful summer dessert that enmeshes savory and sweet with almost a Thai-like flavor profile perfectly. As for the cocktails, my friends and I prefer sweet cocktails so keep that in mind when I say that the daju kiss and the herbal harmony are very alcohol forward drinks. These are not drinks where the alcohol takes a back seat to the other flavors of the drink. Personally, they were too strong for me but that's a personal thing.
