Do you have a favorite place that you go to celebrate your birthday? I do I've been going to Miguel's for celebrations with my family for many years. We love our local Point Loma Shelter Island location. The employees here have been here for a long time and they are very experienced. They know their regulars and they treat us like family. Christina was our most excellent waitress today. I forgot my birthday coupon for $15 off and they honored it and they also brought the traditional mud pie for dessert cloaked and tons of whipped cream and nuts with a candle on top. We split it three ways with my daughter and best friend and we just had the most delightful time together. I ordered my favorite swordfish tacos, and you can never go wrong with these. My friend had the pork adobado tacos and she devoured them and my daughter had the Ahi tostada appetizers with a chicken Molé taco on the side. We had a delightful table out on the patio And our service was excellent and it was a wonderful birthday celebration. I don't usually write an updated review for my consistently 5 star experiences here, but this was such a noteworthy visit I felt inclined to. Liselle was our waitress and she made the night super fun and enjoyable. She was super attentive, on top of it, and witty. It was a blast to have her as our waitress. The food was BOMB as always. I can't seem to get away from my usual order of the tostada grande because it's so good, and my dad always gets el numero uno, but my husband was the adventurous one tonight and tried el jefe combination. We've had Miguel's Cocina in Coronado and Eastlake, and this place was just as good as the other two The Queso Blanco with chips is very delicious and the enchiladas were great! The horchata is made in house and tasted like it! Our server Josue was very pleasant from the beginning. He addressed my family as familia (family in Spanish) when he greeted and with any follow ups. Made me feel welcomed. I didn't have to ask to get refills on our drinks and his food recommendation was solid. My kids enjoyed themselves and their food. The ambiance is more relaxed in the section we were in and dim lit. Very enjoyable. They do have a section with TVs and outside seating so you can enjoy the Point Loma breeze! At 5:50, we asked for another round and was told we couldn't get the HH price, even though it was still on. Then they told us they don't do the HH menu in the room that we were seated in. We argued that point as they seated us there and then were told okay. When they wouldn't give us the HH price for drinks which was within the time, all 12 of us got up and left. STUPID! STUPID!!! They lost a ton of money and also some of us loyal customers. Done. Too many other restaurants that actually want the business. read more

Caldes 7 mares - first time trying it and WOW, super flavorful and well seasoned, packed with so much seafood but it wasn't fishy at all. loved tearing up the corn tortilla and letting it just soak up the broth! hearty and light, definitely recommend. However it was a nice place to go to after a day in the water as it is close to the beach. It's a cute restaurant with cozy tables and plenty of seating upstairs. Never really know what the fish is in the batter or if it's even frozen? The very thick corn tortilla might have been good if it was heated. But the biggest flaw was putting shredded cheddar cheese in it! What the hell is this Rubios???? Not classic. Rice and beans were basic. Price $18 for the plate of two. We were staying on Shelter Island for Becky's birthday and stopped in Miguel's for a drink and a snack. We headed straight upstairs where we were greeted by Alex our bartender. Super cool dude and an excellent bartender. He was chatting it up with the regulars, but also spent time chatting with us, the newcomers. He made a delicious margarita for Bex while I had a Ketch Brewing Alta Mar Mexican Lager (on of my favorites). Upon learning it was Becky's birthday, Alex hooked her up with a coupon for a free appetizer, valid at any Brigantine restaurant (Brigantine, Miguel's or Ketch). We hung out for two drinks and some chips, salsa and that fantastic "crack" Miguel's White Sauce. Good times and a great starting point for Becky's weekend. read more

From the start of our meal at 11 AM, the drinks were flowing between the Mimosas and ice tea - just to name a few. The parking lot here is limited so be prepared to get here before the brunch and dinner crowd. While the drinks were fantastic, the delectable dishes from our most beloved restaurant really stole the show. While everything was delicious, there was one flavor that stood out among the rest. The crowd favorite was skirt steak who took home the Gold medal. There is an upstair seating that has a view of the cross street and a bar section upstairs with sports on display. Hoping the OWNER reads this review. Management was shortsighted enough to undervalue our group of 12 who have been holding repeat get-togethers there for years. No indication as we were seated on the patio that happy hour prices did not apply there, although it was well before 6:00 and we were GIVEN a happy hour menu. The principle of this turned us off so much that we ended up leaving after appetizers. We would have definitely ordered entrees, more drinks, and usually get a few desserts. Popped in here to kill time in between errands, there was a host to greet us and was were seated with Marleen and she was amazing, attentive and friendly! I came during happy hour and took advantage of it. Ordered the Miguel house Margarita rimmed with tajin, carnitas street tacos, beef taquitos and the carnitas flautas and they were all to die for! A nice little treat when you come to sit and eat is that they not only give you complimentary chips and salsa but you also get complimentary queso and it was delicious! Great service and great food! I will definitely be coming back. They have both indoor and outdoor seating with HEAT LAMPS AND SHADES that cover the balcony window areas. Was visiting family in San Diego and had brunch on Saturday, August 24. The restaurant is in a great location near the marina on Shelter Island. The area was bustling with people heading out to the marina and the beach area and the restaurant was quite busy. We were seated outside, which was perfect because it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon. There were three of us and we order quite a bit of food. The restaurant gives you chips and a variety of hot salsa and queso dip. And, we ordered fresh guacamole. All of it was delicious. For our entrées, we ordered the calamari wrapped chile relleno, swordfish taco, pork belly taco, chicken mole taco, fried fish taco, and albondigas soup. The tacos were pretty tasty... But the calamari wrapped chile relleno was amazing! My cousin told me to order that, but it didn't sound good to me. However I had a bite and it was absolutely amazing. When I go back, I am definitely having it. The staff and managers were very nice and accommodating. They provided service with a friendly smile and professionalism. Enjoy! read more

The service was good, and I can't blame the staff at all, they were friendly and attentive. However, the food was a big disappointment. We ordered the cheese enchiladas, and the cheese was hard and didn't taste fresh. The shredded beef burrito also lacked flavor, and the beans tasted old. I tried the Sierra Nevada IPA, but it tasted strange,almost like something was off with the tap. We were seated upstairs inside, where it was hot with no air conditioning, and there were flies around. We weren't given the option to sit outside, which might have helped. Overall, the atmosphere and food quality made it an unpleasant experience. I wouldn't recommend this place unless major improvements are made read more

I've been to Miguel's a couple times in the past and I remember it being better than my last most recent experience. I had the enchiladas suizas and they just didn't have much flavor at all and the sauce on top wasn't very creamy like it usually is for this dish. I need a bigger bowl of salsa with the chips. It was tiny. Although u do get that famous cheesy sauce which is always good. I ordered one of their special margaritas and it came with that red tajin spice on the rim. Great little place! 2 levels with a nice breeze and patio area Seated right away during happy hour, server was quick with chips , salsa and queso which was delicious. Food was hot and delicious fresh. Definitely recommend for big groups, happy hour and mexican food. Knocked off a star due to not serving our littles first... which very sadly our food went cold before they even got their food. Always serve the littles first, not much of an apology given or notice, which is a big customer service issue and we did get charged an extra drink that we didn't order. Strive for accuracy and service. Only reason why we didn't take the "time" to correct.... with small children unfortunately meltdowns happen and they are ready to go! read more

Lovely service at the bar - both Alex and Nacho were the bomb! Fun group of people! Great happy hour! And free homemade tortilla chips (still warm) with salsa and queso! However, when we got our bill from Nacho, there were 3 extra drinks on our bill. He only took two of those invalid drinks off. He also admitted at that point that he accidentally made my Irish Coffee with regular whiskey and not Jameson, and that's probably why I didn't like it very much. Yet he still charged me for that drink, too. We'll come back when Alex is bartending, but not Nacho. read more

Miguel's Cocina at the Shelter Island location has done it again! They've really stepped up their Happy Hour menu with fantastic pricing and some of the best deals in town. Honestly, it might be the best Happy Hour in San Diego. Where else can you get a delicious fish taco and a glass of wine or beer for just $10? And it doesn't stop there. They're now offering an incredible three-course dinner for $25, and the selections are excellent. My wife ordered the House Salad, Chile Rellenos (with rice and beans), and churros for dessert. She said the entire meal was delicious from beginning to end. I decided to order something different so we could try more of the menu. I had the Albondigas soup, chicken flautas with rice and beans, and of course churros for dessert (I wasn't about to share dessert... lol). Everything was flavorful and perfectly prepared. And let's not forget the free, unlimited chips, salsa, and queso -- such a great bonus! I love when a restaurant goes beyond the basics and really takes care of their guests. Great food, great value, and a beautiful Shelter Island setting. Miguel's continues to be one of our favorite spots in San Diego. Highly recommend! read more

(Music Tequila) Taquitos! My buddy and I wanted to drink a beer and have a late night bite to eat. We found Miguel's close to our conference and took a drive. Walking inside, it's decorated for fun. We walked upstairs and were seated at a large table. The menu has a nice variety of margaritas, I'm going to start with a classic margarita as well as a small plate of Taquitos! We had a large group that goes to this location each year when we assemble for our sporting event that we all work this time of year. We all assemble for happy hour since we get there early enough to enjoy the happy hour menu. This year, they sat us outside on the patio as they offered up either inside or outside seating. Not knowing that there was a difference about ordering from the happy hour menu, the management decided that they would not honor happy hour pricing after round 1 because we were sitting outside of their happy hour seating area. In my opinion, the manager could have handled this so much better. All 12 of us decided to settle up and leave. After 5 years, looks like we will need to find a new spot to get together. We flew into San Diego later in the evening and arrived at Miguel's around 8:45 pm. Their kitchen closes at 9:00 pm but we were welcomed and seated right away. Miguel's is a fairly large restaurant and we sat on the second floor, indoors. There is also a patio on the first and second floors. We received a large basket of warm tortilla chips,served with salsa and queso. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Our entrees were generous portions and the prices were reasonable. Ordered online and went to pickup. The restaurant is beautiful! You can sit inside or out, upstairs or down. The bar is upstairs and everybody seems to know everybody. Think CHEERS! When I brought the food home, everyone started commented on the smells, all the additions like 8 sauces plus chips and guacamole. Incredibly tender pork, steak and the sauces were great too.
