The worst Japanese food I have ever had. The rice was mushy and wet, the salad was swimming in cheap dressing, and the chicken was so bland that I couldn't eat more than a couple of bites. This is a poor imitation of a Japanese restaurant run by non-Japanese people who don't know what real Japanese food tastes like. Went here during the art and wine festival which wasn't my idea. We arrived before 230 and were expecting to order from the lunch menu. The waiter said lunch ended at 2pm. When I looked back at the menu board outside of the restaurant it read LUNCH 230. When we confronted the waiter his excuse was that the festival made them stop serving lunch at 2pm despite what the board said. What a crock of sh*t. Anyway, we ordered a few rolls and appetizers which weren't too bad but the service left a bad taste in our mouths. Bottom line: Don't put a white dry erase board on the side walk that says lunch until 230 if your not going to honor that. Should have just stuck to the festival food. read more

We have eaten a lot of sushi restaurants, and we have to say that this restaurant has the strangest tasting sushi we have ever eaten. We had sashimi, some rolls, as well as agedashi tofu. I guess I've been lucky here as all the dishes I've had have been very good. What I like the most about this place is there are some fun dishes they offer that I haven't seen at other Japanese restaurants. The Yakisoba for example is a fun dish of noodles and either veggies, meat, or seafood. They also offer some nice lunch combinations of either udon with sashimi or many vegetarian options like the vegetarian sushi delight. It's never packed and the service is always quick and friendly. The sushi maker at the bar seems legit and listens to whatever you want to modify which I like. I'm not into the little eggs on anything I order so they will substitute for me. I also like that their standard salad dressing they offer with the meals, it is much better than the soggy mayonnaise based ones you mostly find at other places. All the fish I have had is very fresh and the portions are perfect. I'm definitely happy this place exists in Los Altos as a all the others on State and Main are pretty lame. read more

I had bad fish here once. Lessons learned: 1. Never order/buy fish during the weekend (I thought this one was a myth, especially if it's a seafood restaurant) and 2. Make that first time the last time. In case you're wondering: I'm old enough to know myself well and I'm positive my sickness was from the Chirashi Sushi I ordered here. I thought I would leave it up to the chef to choose what's freshest; it seems I was woefully wrong. Other than that it was an OK experience: no outstanding (either bad or good) service, no note-worthy/very unpleasant decor or ambiance. 3rd lesson learned: take a look at a sushi place's menu and if you see ridiculous sounding items like "Sushi Pizza Roll" and "BBQ Roll" among other traditional sounding items, it means they're trying too hard and that inevitably means they'll fail. I know they failed me; after 2 weeks of symptoms, I'm feeling better but I wouldn't do it again. read more

Was ok, but did not return with plates so we could eat the app. My 10pc nigiri plate (18.99!) was not good at all. Fish was room temp and eh. I often think of Japanese food as light and minimally dressed. When I ordered the shiitake and asparagus salad, I expected a good portion of vegetables and mushrooms. Instead, I was given a platter with oil-drenched mushrooms with three tiny asparagus (not even the whole thing, but the sharpened tips) as garnish. When asked about how the mushrooms were prepared, the waitress blatantly lied, saying that they were steamed, so they would leave a "watery residue." I went through two tissues blotting the mushrooms. I'm still in awe of how much oil they were able to squeeze into a tiny little mushroom - if anything, they deserve props for reaching such ridiculously unhealthy standards. Even after taking home the leftovers and cooking them with other vegetables (with no additional oil), I found that the pan was coated with a thick, greasy sheen. I was hungry early for dinner because I didn't eat lunch today. I walked in at 4:40pm and was the only one at the sushi bar. One of the otems I ordered was the Hawaiian Poke...I have had Poke in many different Sushi bars and from little markets in Hawaii. Mikado's version of Poke is mostly lettuce, cucumbers and onions. My wife and I have been eating dinner here about twice a month for the last year or so. Our favorite dishes are the chirashi (lots of sashimi on a bed of rice) or the Mikado Deluxe (sushi/sashimi platter for two). Other dishes we've tried include unagi donburi (like chirashi, but substitute cooked eel for the raw fish), rainbow salad (raw fish over lettuce), and seafood udon. The food is above average in quality, and we have not been disappointed with anything we've been served. Portions vary from adequate to generous: chirashi and unagi donburi are particularly big meals: if you eat everything on your plate, you will not leave hungry. Many of the negative reviews either say the restaurant used to be better, or it is not authentic. Frankly, neither of these detracts from my dining experience because they rely on preconceived notions of what the restaurant should be, as opposed to the actual experience. read more

I have been here quite a few times on my lunch break from work, getting the bento boxes to go. It is for sure one of my more expensive lunches, around $12, but It is always delicious. I ordered their Teriyaki Chicken/California Roll Bento box to go, When I opened tthe lid, the Teriyaki Sauce spilled all over the California Rolls and the Teriyaki Chicken did not taste like Teriyaki Chicken.
