I also liked their bento box item choices. Overall, I thought the prices were acceptable for the amount of food served. Staff are courteous. Food service was slightly slower than what I've come to expect and this is coming from someone who has eaten at countless Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area. In all fairness though, the restaurant was near full capacity. Street parking is available in front of the restaurant or you can find nearby public lots and garages. There was a wait on a Friday evening. My party of 5 ordered an assortment of items ranging from the 3 item bento (chicken teriyaki, sashimi, mixed tempura), teppan sizzling plate with prawns, chicken karaage, agedashi tofu, and Kakaroto sushi sashimi combo. I feel like the value here is pretty good, especially considering the 3 item bento is only $20.95 which is the cost of a 2 item bento at many other Japanese restaurants. The quality, on the other hand, was just ok. Chicken teriyaki was on the stringy side, sashimi didn't feel super fresh, batter on chicken karaage was soggy (though chicken itself was juicy), and the rolls in the Kakaroto sushi sashimi combo were hot which half-cooked the sashimi which was not great. They also used the same teriyaki sauce on many dishes, including the rolls, the teppan sizzling plate, and even the dipping sauce for the chicken karaage. Didn't feel like the teriyaki sauce for chicken karaage was fitting since it usually comes with a kewpie mayo instead. The prawns in the teppan sizzling plate were also clearly from frozen shrimp and weren't fresh at all. Overall I think the quality was a bit of a miss. Service was friendly though and food came quickly. Miso soups did arrive at different times and we had to request missing ones as they were forgotten. read more

Out of all the Japanese restaurants in Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Los Altos, Kakaroto repeatedly earns our business. The bento box offerings are very reasonably priced and delicious. My wife and I will usually split a three item bento and a sushi roll and be more than satisfied. The service is great and the owner is very friendly and knowledgeable. Kakaroto is our go-to spot when we want rolls -- they're well constructed, have unique flavor combinations, and did I mention reasonably priced? I came here with my friend for a late night dinner and The food was absolutely delicious, filling and fresh, I especially loved their California rolls and sashimi, their ribs were great and their drink sweet perfect temperature! I will also say all their food is incredibly easy on the stomach. The place was lively,pretty packed yet quiet and happy ambiance. Located in Downtown Mountain View, the nearby parking lot was filled and had to park in the garage. There's a lot of seating indoors. Noise level is average. Good spot for a classic bento craving! I had the three item combo of mixed tempura, salmon teriyaki, and nigiri. It comes with miso soup, salad, and rice. Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. Parking was available on the street. Dining was available indoors at tables as the sushi counter seemed to be used for storage. Staff seemed to be Korean and some opted to wear a mask while others opted to wear disposable gloves. They had Japanese TV playing which was interesting. Started off with the BBQ ribs dinner and it was delicious. The ribs were fragrant and flavorful. I loved the char that the grill gave. The portion was generous too! The miso soup was watered down and the side salad levered the lettuce core which was more challenging to eat... The dinner also came with a big bowl of rice, which I left as an ornament. The red dragon roll was decent. It was gigantic featuring tempura shrimp on the inside as well as avocado and imitation crab. I ordered takeout from here recently, and overall it was just alright. It somewhat satisfied the sushi craving, but none of the rolls really blew my mind. One of the first things I noticed was that the rolls were noticeably smaller than what you might find at other sushi restaurants. I also found that several rolls weren't fully described on the menu-- from unlisted toppings (green onion, cod roe, sesame seeds, tempura flakes, etc.) to not mentioning that certain fish would be cooked (like the white tuna in the Snow White roll). Sadly, I do have have some "notes:" * Lion King Roll: Not as flavorful or saucy as versions I've had elsewhere, so the salmon on top came across a little dry. * Snow White Roll: The crab mix was tasty, but I was disappointed that the white tuna was cooked since the menu didn't specify that. The garlic sauce was also milder than expected. * Poseidon Roll: Beautiful presentation and lots of different flavors, but I don't think the high price point is justified. Roll came with seaweed salad and tempura flakes on top, which weren't mentioned on the menu. * Gohan Roll: Had much more cooked salmon than crab, and reminded me a bit of grocery store sushi. * Sex on a Mountain: This one stood out from the bunch since I love spicy bay scallop and fish-forward rolls. That said, the portion was pretty small-- the restaurant was a little skimpy with both the bay scallop and walnuts and there wasn't even enough to cover the whole roll. Really good sushi rolls. They're about $14 for a fancy roll and $8 for a basic roll. It is pretty crowded dine in but the wait was still short about 10 minutes wait. I will specifically report on the Tonkatsu Curry lunch which I had on a Tuesday. The place was ¾ full and doing a lot of take out business. I was seated promptly and service was outstanding during my lunch. The meal came with OK Miso soup and a small Iceberg lettuce salad. The main issue with this entree is tenderness and moistness of the pork cutlet. If the thickness is not uniform, the thinner parts are tough and chewy. My cutlet had a golden crunchy breading on the outside and a uniformly thick cutlet which was tender, moist and delicious. The curry came separately in a steel boat with some carrot and potato chunks with sliced onion. The breading helps soak up the sauce. The sauce was not spicy so I kicked it up a notch with Togarashi. The portion was generous and I was happily stuffed. I've had this dish at several other MTV places and Kakaroto definitely is the best. A terrific value, definite repeat and upgrading to 5 stars. read more

It is 30 % less expensive than the Japanese restaurant one block away . The tonkatsu and grilled chicken tastes the same as Tomi Sushi . My preferred sushi spot on Castro. Very good value for some of the combos. Love the baked mussel appetizer, but it does take a while to prepare. The servers are really nice and always act like they recognize me, but not sure if they do that to everyone. They play fun videos to entertain you while you wait. We have been here a few times when service was slow. I'm taking off a star because they unfortunately have messed up my allergy requests a few times.
