There was a wait on a Friday evening. My party of 5 ordered an assortment of items ranging from the 3 item bento (chicken teriyaki, sashimi, mixed tempura), teppan sizzling plate with prawns, chicken karaage, agedashi tofu, and Kakaroto sushi sashimi combo. I feel like the value here is pretty good, especially considering the 3 item bento is only $20.95 which is the cost of a 2 item bento at many other Japanese restaurants. The quality, on the other hand, was just ok. Chicken teriyaki was on the stringy side, sashimi didn't feel super fresh, batter on chicken karaage was soggy (though chicken itself was juicy), and the rolls in the Kakaroto sushi sashimi combo were hot which half-cooked the sashimi which was not great. They also used the same teriyaki sauce on many dishes, including the rolls, the teppan sizzling plate, and even the dipping sauce for the chicken karaage. Didn't feel like the teriyaki sauce for chicken karaage was fitting since it usually comes with a kewpie mayo instead. The prawns in the teppan sizzling plate were also clearly from frozen shrimp and weren't fresh at all. Overall I think the quality was a bit of a miss. Service was friendly though and food came quickly. Miso soups did arrive at different times and we had to request missing ones as they were forgotten. read more

Kakaroto is our go-to spot when we want rolls -- they're well constructed, have unique flavor combinations, and did I mention reasonably priced? Service is kinda hit or miss depending on how busy they are, but the food is so good! The fish is fresh and the rolls don't fall apart when you pick them up. Located in Downtown Mountain View, the nearby parking lot was filled and had to park in the garage. There's a lot of seating indoors. Noise level is average. Bento with pork tonkatsu and saba (4/5): the tonkatsu was so crispy albeit a bit dry. The sauce helped though. The saba was delicious. It had a nice grilled flavor and was soft. I ordered takeout from here recently, and overall it was just alright. It somewhat satisfied the sushi craving, but none of the rolls really blew my mind. One of the first things I noticed was that the rolls were noticeably smaller than what you might find at other sushi restaurants. I also found that several rolls weren't fully described on the menu-- from unlisted toppings (green onion, cod roe, sesame seeds, tempura flakes, etc.) to not mentioning that certain fish would be cooked (like the white tuna in the Snow White roll). Sadly, I do have have some "notes:" * Lion King Roll: Not as flavorful or saucy as versions I've had elsewhere, so the salmon on top came across a little dry. * Snow White Roll: The crab mix was tasty, but I was disappointed that the white tuna was cooked since the menu didn't specify that. The garlic sauce was also milder than expected. * Poseidon Roll: Beautiful presentation and lots of different flavors, but I don't think the high price point is justified. Roll came with seaweed salad and tempura flakes on top, which weren't mentioned on the menu. * Gohan Roll: Had much more cooked salmon than crab, and reminded me a bit of grocery store sushi. * Sex on a Mountain: This one stood out from the bunch since I love spicy bay scallop and fish-forward rolls. That said, the portion was pretty small-- the restaurant was a little skimpy with both the bay scallop and walnuts and there wasn't even enough to cover the whole roll. Good spot for a classic bento craving! I had the three item combo of mixed tempura, salmon teriyaki, and nigiri. It comes with miso soup, salad, and rice. All the sides were excellent, and the salad dressing hit the spot (I was craving this particular style of dressing, and the veggies were nice and fresh), totally made my day. The salmon teriyaki was perfect, very tender piece and the sauce was delicious. I would definitely get it again. The tempura was ok/good. I would like it even more if they had eggplant or broccoli. Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. Parking was available on the street. Dining was available indoors at tables as the sushi counter seemed to be used for storage. Staff seemed to be Korean and some opted to wear a mask while others opted to wear disposable gloves. They had Japanese TV playing which was interesting. I will specifically report on the Tonkatsu Curry lunch which I had on a Tuesday. The place was ¾ full and doing a lot of take out business. I was seated promptly and service was outstanding during my lunch. The meal came with OK Miso soup and a small Iceberg lettuce salad. The main issue with this entree is tenderness and moistness of the pork cutlet. If the thickness is not uniform, the thinner parts are tough and chewy. My cutlet had a golden crunchy breading on the outside and a uniformly thick cutlet which was tender, moist and delicious. The curry came separately in a steel boat with some carrot and potato chunks with sliced onion. The breading helps soak up the sauce. The sauce was not spicy so I kicked it up a notch with Togarashi. The portion was generous and I was happily stuffed. I've had this dish at several other MTV places and Kakaroto definitely is the best. A terrific value, definite repeat and upgrading to 5 stars. read more

I visited the restaurant on a weekend around 6 PM, narrowly beating the rush hour. We got a table for two right away, which was great. The downside was that it was close to the table next to us. It is a popular restaurant so to make up for the customer demands, they had to maximize their space and put guests close to one another. I do not mind it, but it's something I wanted to mention if someone prefers more space. Food-wise, we ordered Katsu-don donburi, Sex on the Mountain Roll, Pudding Roll, and Spider Roll. First off, these are great prices for the amount you are getting. The pudding roll was quite basic, but I still enjoyed it. Sex on the Mountain had a good amount of fish and was worth it in my opinion. My boyfriend loved his Spider roll and donburi. The donburi was a bit salty for me. Even though the place was busy, the staff checked on us occasionally. It did seem like they are slightly understaffed for the number of customers; however, idk if the place can accommodate even more staff given the minimal space. Overall, I enjoy the quality, quantity, and presentation of the food so I'll still come back, despite the bustling nature of the restaurant.
