Beef udon with soba instead of udon

Good deals on the bento boxes ($17-$19) depending if you wanted 2 or 3 items for dinner. Service was a little slow since they were busy. Small and cozy.

3 item bento box: chicken teriyaki, sashimi, mixed tempura
    Emily W.

There was a wait on a Friday evening. My party of 5 ordered an assortment of items ranging from the 3 item bento (chicken teriyaki, sashimi, mixed tempura), teppan sizzling plate with prawns, chicken karaage, agedashi tofu, and Kakaroto sushi sashimi combo. I feel like the value here is pretty good, especially considering the 3 item bento is only $20.95 which is the cost of a 2 item bento at many other Japanese restaurants. The quality, on the other hand, was just ok. Chicken teriyaki was on the stringy side, sashimi didn't feel super fresh, batter on chicken karaage was soggy (though chicken itself was juicy), and the rolls in the Kakaroto sushi sashimi combo were hot which half-cooked the sashimi which was not great. They also used the same teriyaki sauce on many dishes, including the rolls, the teppan sizzling plate, and even the dipping sauce for the chicken karaage. Didn't feel like the teriyaki sauce for chicken karaage was fitting since it usually comes with a kewpie mayo instead. The prawns in the teppan sizzling plate were also clearly from frozen shrimp and weren't fresh at all. Overall I think the quality was a bit of a miss. Service was friendly though and food came quickly. Miso soups did arrive at different times and we had to request missing ones as they were forgotten.

Out of all the Japanese restaurants in Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Los Altos, Kakaroto repeatedly earns our business. The bento box offerings are very reasonably priced and delicious. My wife and I will usually split a three item bento and a sushi roll and be more than satisfied. The service is great and the owner is very friendly and knowledgeable. A great restaurant that deserves a visit.

Great service and very kid friendly! Love their kids menu! It's a very cute bento box with nice cream. Rolls were good. Spacious tables and there are a couple TVs with the World Cup on!

We came here on a Saturday evening after visiting the Christkindl Market in downtown Mountain View, since it was tough to find a spot for dinner. We usually go to Sushi Tomi, but had heard this place was a better value, so we decided to give it a try. Service was a bit slow--it took a while for our rolls to come out, and the restaurant seemed pretty backed up that night, likely due to the event. We ordered udon soup, miso soup, a salad, and a couple of rolls (Sex on the Mountain and Goku) to share. Everything tasted fresh and was pretty good overall, though we preferred the Sex on the Mountain roll.

Kakaroto is typically busy on weekends for both lunch and dinner. My partner and I have visited twice, once for dinner and recently for lunch. We waited about 20 minutes for dinner, but for lunch, we arrived after the rush and were seated immediately. The staff is friendly, although it usually takes some time for a waiter to assist us, both during lunch and dinner. FOOD Our experience is limited to their sushi, which is always made fresh. It's tasty and enjoyable! Solid sushi spot.

Was hungry after the movies in so decided to grab a bite in downtown MV. It's been a bit since we've been and there was no shortage of restaurants to choose from. Being that it's been hot sushi seemed the right choice. Buy so many to choose from so we decided to check some out and this was the first on the list it was easy to get to looked full but no line and there parking spot around corner!. We were seated right away and e joyed our meal. Prices are reasonable service was fast bento box at $20 is best deal hands down- we got gyoza 6! Pieces salmon and katsu soup salad rice and even a little Mac salad which we cold have eaten more of! Rolls were fresh and we can't wait to go bank. Nice to be able to have a sushi meal that doesn't break the bank!

I will NEVER not want Kakaroto. I almost don't wanna write this review and try to gatekeep because the wait times are already long enough!! But I don't do that, so here we are. Kakaroto is our go-to spot when we want rolls -- they're well constructed, have unique flavor combinations, and did I mention reasonably priced? Service is kinda hit or miss depending on how busy they are, but the food is so good! The fish is fresh and the rolls don't fall apart when you pick them up. They're also not stingy with the fish to rice ratio. I recommend the Goku, Broly, and Sex on the Mountain rolls. Can't go wrong with any of those. If Kakaroto has 0 fans, I'm dead.

I came here with my friend for a late night dinner and The food was absolutely delicious, filling and fresh, I especially loved their California rolls and sashimi, their ribs were great and their drink sweet perfect temperature! I will also say all their food is incredibly easy on the stomach. The place was lively, pretty packed yet quiet and happy ambiance. The service was superb, they were welcoming and immediately welcomed us in and sat us down they gave us everything we asked for even sugar for our tea. Overall a very nice place definitely recommend!! Also their beef ribs are super tasty I ended up taking left overs and had food for 2 days. Instagram/@Mrs.arielmichaelisofficial

Bento with pork tonkatsu and saba
    Kevin L.

Located in Downtown Mountain View, the nearby parking lot was filled and had to park in the garage. There's a lot of seating indoors. Noise level is average. Bento with pork tonkatsu and saba (4/5): the tonkatsu was so crispy albeit a bit dry. The sauce helped though. The saba was delicious. It had a nice grilled flavor and was soft. Tap to pay is not accepted. Overall, Kakaroto is a great Japanese restaurant. Food is delicious and staff are good.

Placed a pick up order online, and when i got there 35 minutes had already passed from the time i ordered it, and it still wasnt ready. I asked the front guy and when he checked, they hadnt even started preparing it. I ordered it for pick up so itd be ready when i get there but still ended up waiting so long. And the chicken they gave me was burnt tasted really bitter! Such a of waste of time and money!

D2 any three items lunch box bento (mixed tempura, salmon teriyaki, nigiri)
    Jessica H.

Good spot for a classic bento craving! I had the three item combo of mixed tempura, salmon teriyaki, and nigiri. It comes with miso soup, salad, and rice. All the sides were excellent, and the salad dressing hit the spot (I was craving this particular style of dressing, and the veggies were nice and fresh), totally made my day. The salmon teriyaki was perfect, very tender piece and the sauce was delicious. I would definitely get it again. The tempura was ok/good. I would like it even more if they had eggplant or broccoli. The nigiri was buttery, tasty fish. I might have to try a roll next time! For bento, the tonkatsu also looked very good. It was hard to choose which 3 items I wanted most. Great items at a good price. Nice spot with friendly staff.

Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. Parking was available on the street. Dining was available indoors at tables as the sushi counter seemed to be used for storage. Staff seemed to be Korean and some opted to wear a mask while others opted to wear disposable gloves. They had Japanese TV playing which was interesting. Started off with the BBQ ribs dinner and it was delicious. The ribs were fragrant and flavorful. I loved the char that the grill gave. The portion was generous too! The miso soup was watered down and the side salad levered the lettuce core which was more challenging to eat... The dinner also came with a big bowl of rice, which I left as an ornament. The red dragon roll was decent. It was gigantic featuring tempura shrimp on the inside as well as avocado and imitation crab. There was some not very spicy tuna on top as well as some mayo. ~$45/head after tax and gratuity for dinner with plenty of leftovers.

It's takeout only, which made ordering super easy. We ordered online and even scored a discount through a special on their website. We got the Salmon Lover for two and the two-person combo sushi boat. We split everything between four people and still had leftovers! The fish was incredibly fresh, with generous portions. My favorite poke was the spicy mango tuna--so flavorful. They even include a mini bottle of soy sauce, which was such a cute touch. There are plenty of sides to choose from, and you get a really good amount of rice. The sushi boat is definitely on the pricier side, and I was a bit skeptical at first because of the packaging. I wasn't sure if the quality would live up to the presentation, but it absolutely did. The packaging is not only fun but also super functional--perfect for taking to the beach, a park, or a party.

This time, I used the online Yelp waitlist option and was able to get in much quicker. We were offered bar seats right away, but since we wanted a regular table, we waited just another five to six minutes, which was not bad at all. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, and every time someone enters, the servers warmly greet them. Since it was our first time, the server took the time to explain the menu, which made ordering a breeze. Plus, the presentation of the food deserves a solid five out of five! Here is what we ordered: Tonkotsu Udon Deluxe (Large, Medium Spicy): The portion size is huge, and a regular size should easily suffice since I could not even finish the large. The pork kakuni (braised pork belly) was incredibly soft, tender, and packed with flavor, and the broth was really good. This deluxe version comes with everything in the regular Tonkotsu Udon plus pork belly: a rich pork and fish broth, three pieces of premium chashu, shrimp tempura (which I asked for on the side), a seasoned boiled egg, garlic, green onions, boiled spinach, fish powder, and tempura bits. Beef Sukiyaki Nabeyaki Udon (Regular, Mild): This includes sweet and tender beef, a poached egg, maitake mushrooms, onions, green onions, fish cake, and tempura bits. We actually felt the broth on this one was even better than the Tonkotsu. The beef was flavorful and an absolute delight to eat. Vegetable Tempura (A La Carte): Comes with sweet potato, eggplant, pumpkin, corn, maitake mushrooms, and broccoli. The absolute standout was the pumpkin because it was so sweet and tender. It comes with a lower-sodium, light soy sauce that makes dipping the tempura effortless and light. Hot Ginger Orange Sake: A lovely drink made with dried ginger, dried orange, and rosemary. The aroma of orange and rosemary was very calming, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Extras: They also provide a side of spice powder if you want to dial up the heat on your soup. Practical Details: Parking & Waitlist: Visiting on a Saturday means it gets very busy, and you will need to find parking before turning onto Castro Street. Joining the online waitlist ahead of time is definitely the way to go to make getting in smoother. Overall, it is a fantastic spot with wonderful service and incredible udon. We will gladly return!

They have a happy hour menu from 7 to 10 pm on Saturdays, but they differ depending on the day. They have some appetizers and drinks on the happy hour menu, so we tried the gyoza, mochi and side tempura. The mochi had a house made sauce glaze that was sweet and salty, and came with nori as a wrap. The texture of the mochi was really soft and chewy. The gyoza were really crispy with a soft interior. We ended up ordering a second round of them. The tempura was nicely fried with not too much batter. The shrimp was really succulent and I liked that they have mushroom tempura too. From their regular menu, we ordered a bunch of food. I tried the yaki-onigiri ochazuke with salmon, fried chicken skin, the eggplant and various skewers. The fried chicken skin was really nice and crispy, and came with a ponzu sauce and mayo to dip in. The yaki onigiri was nicely grilled and still had crispy bits when submerged in the soup. I was really excited that they have shishamo/smelt. It was nicely roasted and didn't have any overtly fishy flavor. Everyone at my table really enjoyed their food. I'd definitely come back here to try their other dishes!
