I ordered the 1/2 & 1/2 (half soy garlic, half spicy) and it was Yin & Yang of chicken (whah?). My buddy ordered the Korean BBQ. I also ordered the Chicken Fried Rice....because it is awesome. My friend, who lived above a Bonchon at the University of Pennsylvania, was excited to return and try California's version of the chain. For me, I hadn't been to a Bonchon in a couple of years, so I was excited to return. When we arrived on a Friday around 6pm, we were seated expeditiously with a couple of other open tables around us. A nice, clean storefront with TVs playing on all walls, as well as music flowing through the store. We ordered the soy garlic wings and the house friend rice with spicy chicken - talk about chicken love :) The house friend rice was pretty good - definitely hit the spot. The chicken wasn't too spicy, but the dish was a tad bit oily. Prop tip - use the cucumber as a palatte cleanser. The soy garlic wings were amazing as always - very consistent quality across all locations. We love how it's both sweet and savory, honestly one of the best wings I've had in a while. I visited Bonchon after the lunch rush hour around 230pm. I asked the cashier about the size of the sides of coleslaw. The cashier Yasmeen specifically showed me the size of a red and white cup (looked about 4oz). I asked her if there were any larger sizes. She went to the back to check, came back, and advised there was not. I ordered a total of 6 sides of coleslaw, a small meal of 4 drums (soy garlic) with coleslaw as the side, one regular fry, and one seasoned fry to go. After waiting about 15 minutes my order was ready. I looked in the bag and to my surprise there was 5 small sides (2 oz) of coleslaw. I advised to the young lady that the coleslaw sides were incorrect. She asked me in detail what I ordered. I responded that I'll let the cashier explain since she was right behind her. The two of them quietly spoke and clarified. The women whom handed me my food advised there was a miscommunication about the size of the sides. She explained that the size of the 4oz cups are only for to go customers. I said my food is to go so can I please have the red and white cups (a total of 6) to go. I kindly advised that as a paying customer I was specifically shown a size, ordered what i needed, paid, and if I could please have what I ordered to go? She then proceeded to further explain how she was not able to give the red and white cups but only the 2 oz cups and she could give me 4 more. I advised as a customer, I would like what I paid for and if she was not able to provide that then I would like a full refund. She continued to try to negotiate about size of the cups. At that point I was so disappointed in her customer service skills, that I politely declined and just asked for a refund. She pointed me back to the cashier where Yasmeen was to issue my refund. Yasmeen apologized for her coworkers behavior and was just as appalled as I was regarding the sides of coleslaw. Came in here for a quick bite to eat but the service (or lack thereof) left a sour taste in my mouth. This is a hybrid location so you can dine in or you can order at the kiosk to dine out. The kiosk has signs that says "Togo only" but my experiences in the past with these types of establishments with kiosks right at the front is that you order at the kiosk or at the front and then you seat yourself inside. Order and pay first and seat yourself if it isn't a full service restaurant. As my group and I walked in, no one was there to greet us. We waited a bit for the group in front of us to finish ordering at the kiosk. Then we made our selection and paid and sat at a table. The hostess finally came to greet us at the table and was put out that we already ordered at the kiosk. We explained to her no one told us the rules of the house so she allowed us to stay. We sat and waited for our order. The group in front of us also sat down and someone told them the same thing, that the kiosk was for to go only. The group was also confused and they reluctantly allowed that group to sit as well, but that group got up and walked outside to wait for their order. When our order finally came, we decided we wanted to eat our food to go anyway. However, my husband noticed our second item on the order was missing. They crossed the item out on our receipt but didn't say anything to us. When my husband inquired about the missing item, the staff said they ran out of the item and refunded us already. How were we supposed to know this? When they handed us the bag, they didn't tell us any of this and expected us to know that they refunded us?! Usually when these things happen, they inform us they ran out of the item, if we wanted a replacement of equal value, or a refund. I was ticked off at this point because it seemed like this establishment lacked hospitality and expected customers to read their minds on how their system works. The refund for the missing item better have been done correctly or I'm going to make sure the whole charge will be marked as fraud, especially due to the lack of communication. I'm not one to leave negative reviews because mistakes happen. However, I believe this place needs to improve on a couple of things and this review will support the growth all businesses hoping to thrive would appreciate. 1. If you have a more casual sit in establishment, but you have a system this isn't intuitive, there needs to be a greeter at the door. The greeter, in this case, should ask everyone coming in the door "would you like to dine in or order take out? I can seat you if you'd like to dine in and hand you a menu. If you'd like to take out, you may use our convenient kiosk." I get it, there are signs that clearly expressed these things but the one second of communication goes a long way. Signs are for returning customers. 2. If our order is missing, the staff needs to communicate that with the customer. Something along the lines of "hello, are you order number 2? You ordered this item that isn't available today. Since you already paid, can we replace this item with this of equal value, or would you like a refund?" Our server was so attentive and made sure that, even though our food took a bit longer than expected (the place was busy!), our water glasses were always full and our drinks were on time.
