Beerhead was probably the most disappointing stop during my time in Pittsburgh, but I'm sure it's a nice place under different circumstances. I just didn't personally feel welcome here as a solo traveler with specific interests. When I go to a new city, I like to explore that place's craft beer scene. I felt like this bar was more of an all-encompassing, quantity-over-quality venue. In other words, they have one of those giant beer menus with lots of recognizable names. I was originally greeted by one guy who emphasized immediately that they ~only~ serve beer -- nothing else, the end. I kind of assumed and hoped as much, but felt like maybe he thought I didn't look like a beer drinker? But, like I said, I had a mission in mind upon arrival. I wanted the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week badge for my Untappd acount, as a memento of my visit. I told them as much and asked if they had any of the qualifying brews available. I needed three different ones. They fortunately had one on, so I ordered a taster size of it. One full day in Pittsburgh equated to smaller pours to try as much as possible. My request was then mentioned to a girl, who they stated was their resident beer expert. She looked at the beer listing and told me they had a gose in the back that hadn't been connected just yet, but to give her 15 minutes and it'd be available. I thought that was super nice, so I slowly sipped my taster in the meantime. About half an hour later, she still hadn't updated me on its status and I didn't want to bother them so soon, so I ordered a local cider. Once I finished with it, the original guy popped back over to see how I was doing. That's when I asked for the status of the keg change, and he replied that they weren't putting the gose on because it was their Michigan Beer Night. Clearly, there was a miscommunication, which I found unfortunate because I could've moved on much earlier and not have wasted time when I had a full agenda of places to go. Not to mention, I love goses so it was a bummer not to be able to try it! I'd only return in the future if I was with a big group of people and was attending a game nearby. My husband and I were passing through Pittsburgh, and only had a few hours to grab lunch and stroll through the city. It was a first visit for both of us. As we crossed over the bridge to the baseball stadium, we figured there would be a fun place to get something to eat. Mike's is right across the street from the baseball stadium. We were amazed by the number of beers they offered and more excited by the food we ordered. The scallops and salmon was partially cooked and served on an extremely hot stone. The price was reasonable and the taste was exquisite. For bar food, it was unbelievable. It was 4th of July weekend and Wimbledon was on many of the TV's, not to mention baseball and other sports, too. I highly recommend this place. Service was great, location was good. Perfect spot to drink in Pittsburgh before a game. I went here before the UT/Pitt game as it seemed to be the unofficial UT bar. Tons of great beer options. IC Light is a local beer they recommended. It was a great recommendation. The wings are also delicious, and it's a great atmosphere to pregame with tons of TVs. It's also not very loud even when it's packed, so you can have conversations with friends. Somehow after all the beers and wings my tab was less than $40. i normally do not review anything, but i came here with a group and our server was strange. That's the only way i can describe it. She barely made eye contact and was very robotic, she didnt seem to be knowledgeable about beer at all when asked for suggestions. She never cleared anything dirty from our table which was frustrating for us. If you've ever been to Pittsburgh, you're aware that the distance between PPG Arena, the Strip District, North Shore, and Southside are in no way a walkable distance. This known fact has not deterred me from walking my fatass from my hotel (Pittsburgh Marriott City Center, I love you) to the Strip, back, and eventually over to North Shore. I took a walk with a friend from Market Square over the Roberto Clemente bridge into North Shore. Surprisingly, the city was quiet. The Penguins just finished playing the Blue Jackets and the Steelers were taking on the Ravens the following day so I was sad to see little to no people around. We ended up hopping off Mr. Clemente's bridge, staging an impromptu photo shoot with his bust outside PNC Park, and stumbling (literally) into Mike's. There was a decent amount of people around, but the size of the place can hold a much larger capacity. The majority of the Tetris-shaped bar was taken except for a few seats in the middle. My friend and I waited. And waited. And waited. For a bartender to acknowledge us. Being so late on a Saturday, I understand that there was little desire for someone to open a new tab, and there were interesting people telling interesting stories, but I really wanted a beer! It's called Mike's Beer Bar! And Mike wouldn't have opened up a beer bar and not shared! That's just rude. Eventually, a friendly bartender came over from their stage (I assume they do live music?) and helped us out. I'm a huge, huge beer fan but I couldn't focus enough to check out their tap selection, so I opted for a White Claw. It was late anyway so it's good I didn't need another 10% ABV beer for the night. Balance, y'all. Mike's is a cool environment and I bet it gets packed during Pirates games. Wow! I didn't realize how much beer is out there! My BF and I stopped in here during a walk at the North Shore. We wanted to get an appetizer and some beers but soon realized that the insanely big menu was just full of beer-- no food. All good though because we had a great time! My BF is boring and goes with the typical Miller Lite or Coors, but I like to try different kinds. I decided on a sampler with four different types of beer (each sample glass was around $2). I ordered all tropical/fruit flavors and I was in heaven! I love the fact that you can try so many different flavors and kinds of beer for a good price. Service was friendly and atmosphere was nice. Was traveling from out of town and got this place as a recco from a local. Was just looking for a local beer to chill with, but got so much more. When I arrived the first staff member was a bit off putting nothing big just attitude from a few simple questions. That was quickly fixed by sitting at the bar and having Austin as a bar tender. Nice large area and will be very crowded before pirates games as to be expected. Service is horrible. I understand It gets busy but hire more people to have more people work during busy times. Tremendous beer selection. I work in the industry and these guys know craft beer. And they are extremely PA loyal which is certainly cool. I had the NY STRIP on a stone.... First time I've ever had something like this. The dude that served it to me explained perfectly how the 850 degree stone worked cooking the steak and it was one of the best I've ever had. The only thing that kept this from close to a 5 was my waitress was not in a good mood... she scared me . Honestly though place is full of Penns fans and it's the playoffs so they are all on edge! So, what a disappointment! I'm only giving this place 2 stars is due to the fact that the beer selection is great and what I eventually did order tasted great.
