I was craving a milkshake so I decided to try out milk bar. I haven't been to one in a while and figured their shakes must be pretty tasty. I was craving a chocolatey creamy yummy shake. I got the chocolate birthday cake shake and I didn't like it. There was nothing "wrong" with it, it just isn't the kind of milkshake I like. Description. The base of the shake tasted like the cereal milk ice cream that milk bar is known for. I thought it would be chocolate ice cream. Then there were rather large chunks of their chocolate birthday cake in the shake. I thought they would be more bite sized so the cake could be sucked up the straw. They were way too large for that. The shake had a LOT of sprinkles in it. So much so that the texture of the shake was majority sprinkle. It did not have a chocolate flavor. It tastes like cereal milk ice cream with very crunchy sprinkles. All that to say, I'm sure it's the perfect shake for someone, but not for me :( ... and it's also incredibly expensive! For this to be the flagship, I was kind of left speechless. When I found out there was a Milk Bar not far from where I was staying, I had to go. I've been a Tosi fan for a while. But, I was underwhelmed. I know they are known for their cakes and I had only ice cream....but my topping (extra) of chocolate was barely a drizzle. Soooo hyped and I don't really get it! Being from out of town, I was excited to try Milk Bar after seeing it and Christina Tosi all over TV and YouTube. When we got in to order, they were out of almost everything. I could only order the classic milk soft serve with sprinkles, when I was looking forward to the corn flakes, but I did end up getting a corn cookie as well. Starting off with the soft serve, it tasted super milky, which to me isn't a personal preferred taste. I wish it was sweeter or had some hint of vanilla. Not only that, it took forever for the soft serve to come out! There weren't too many people ahead of us, but it took probably 15 minutes of standing in the cold, to get the soft serve. As there's no indoor seating, we wanted to sit down outside but couldn't because the outdoor tables and seats were drenched in sticky ice cream and mess everywhere. Super dirty and such a turn off for such a cute interior! The only redeeming part of the visit was the corn cookie which was exceptional - I could eat several of those. read more

My daughter my son and my wife surprised me with this place for father's day I told them that I was going to drive to Washington and they had it planned out for me after we went and seen all the Monuments there was quite a bit to choose from and they all looked very good it was a quiet little spot it looked nice inside also and I have to say for father's day the the women that was working behind the counter her name is devoshia she was amazing she explained everything about all the stuff they have and also gave Mr a free slice of cake for father's day the cake was probably the best cake I have ever had hands down I will definitely come back every time I'm in Washington for sure I highly recommend comming to this place you will not regret it. read more

Super cute dessert bar with a ton of options! You can get ice cream, a sundae, cake, truffles, cookies, pie, or a mix of things. There are so many options that I was a little overwhelmed but it's nice that there's something for everyone. The customer service was out standing! I was able to sample the ice cream before purchasing and that saved me from ordering the wrong thing haha Flavor wise.... milk isn't for me at all. The cereal milk and funnel cake ice cream weren't good. The cereal milk is salty and the funnel cake tasted like pure syrup. I ended up getting 2 different kinds of truffles. The birthday cake truffle was pretty good. I'm glad I got a bite size version of the sliced cake. It's really sweet and would go good with a glass of milk if that's what you like. The Apple cider doughnut cake truffle was quite interesting. Didn't love it nor did I hate it. Sweet with a bit of spice to it. Again glad it was the bite size version. The store is so cute and the menu has lots of options! We reached at a good time because we just made it before there was a line behind us. I ordered the chocolate cake shake which had pieces of their cake in it as well. It was good but not worth the $9 based on the quantity you get. The employees are very Covid safe and require masks to be on when waiting in line and also for picking up your order. Milk bar always is switching up the decorations and is extremely cute!  Quality made treats: The sweets here are always delicious-- you cannot. Go wrong with any type of cookie here. The cookies are large, chewy, and soft. They are truly a worth indulgence. On my last trip, mid-summer, I grabbed some of the cereal milk ice cream, which is aptly- named!  Unique flavors: There are some unique ice cream flavors here, that are worth tryin. Birthday cake, cornflake, pie-- all flavors you might not be dying to try in an ice cream, but most definitely should. The flavors are perfectly captured in a way that doesn't feel artificial or chemically-- and will have you ranking some new favorite ice cream flavors on your list of personal favs!  Friendly service: Service here is really friendly, especially given how busy this place gets. I was super excited to try this milk bar ice cream. Honestly I was a little disappointed because I had mind thought of eating regular ice cream. When you try milk bar, make sure you have open minded because it taste nothing like regular sweet ice cream. The milk ice cream tastes salty and it's not sweet at all, so don't expect anything sweet. If you keep that in mind you will be fine. It is definitely a different ice cream experience and you need to try it out just once to know what people are talking about. This is definitely not my favorite ice cream spot but from time to time I do miss milk ice cream. Milk ice cream is basically cereal milk that they make into ice cream. It is salty and creamy so make sure you keep that in mind. I wish they have a sweet version of milk ice cream. The price of this ice cream is definitely very pricey so it is something that I would get once a year when I'm around the Wharf. I've been here twice already because after coming in the first time and trying both their vanilla and chocolate cake slice I was in heaven. I usually like really light, airy cakes with whipped cream kinds of frosting. I typically don't like overly sweet anything and so I was really surprise that this slice of cake really spoke to me. It said, "I love you, Lily." And I loved it back. The cake is dense and the frosting is really sweet, but in an addicting way. Plus, there's little crunchy cereal thing in every bite that brings just the right about of texture. My boyfriend also grabbed a bunch of cookies and he said they liked it, but the cake reigned supreme. I also like how they have a refrigerated section up front where they have both slices and whole cakes for you to grab. Then I came in the second time and I went straight to get a cake slice. But I also wanted to try the baby birthday cake shake because I was thinking it would be a cold, thick mix of ice cream and the cake I like so much. But I hated it to be honest. It was way too liquid-y, sickly sweet and every sip was nothing but sprinkles. Sprinkles are a waste of space for me and there was just way too much of it. And if you do get the baby size, just keep in mind that it is really tiny, which I'm glad I did in this case because I didn't even drink all of what little I had. Every time I'm in DC, I stop at a Milk Bar location.  It's been years now.  Even as a student, I was happy to pay their above-average prices for a milkshake.  I would pay just about anything for their cinnamon sugar pretzel milkshake, which I still maintain is the most delicious thing I've ever eaten. (Please bring that back!) My yelp check-ins don't reflect for how long and how often I try to get to a location. The richness, decadence, and indulgence of their milkshakes cannot be overstated. I like to share a milkshake and a baked good with someone when I go, because everything on the menu is so fabulous but most is so intensely rich. Go for a chocolate milkshake or whatever's on special/seasonal offer. As for baked goods, the crack pie is a classic for those who grew up in the south. If you're not an American or a Southerner and you want to try something different, that's a fun option. I wish the slices were bigger! I've also never had a cookie I didn't like. Their weirder options are my top picks.  The soft serve is also good, but one of the menu items I'm less excited about. The cereal milk flavor is sweet, as is the crack pie, but I'd rather have the baked good than the ice cream. It's the one thing I don't think is worth the Milk Bar level price. The whole staff team at this location is great, but special shoutout to employee Mark for taking a pic of me with my ice cream when I came alone. Y'all go above and beyond. Shoutout to this flagship for also having convenient parking. That alone makes the choice to go here for dessert in central DC easy. read more

Love Milk Bar. We've been fans since we first tried their goodies in NY. There is a small parking lot, which is nice. There is also street parking and garages around. Employees were friendly and helpful. Our goodies were wrapped up neatly. Some indoor seating is also available. Our favorites are the Milk Bar Pie, Compost Cookie, and B'Day Cake Truffles. They are leaning towards the pricier side but the flavor combinations of these goodies are A-OK in my book. I'm not fan of their Cereal Milk Soft Serve but we recently tried their Milk Bar Pie Soft Serve and it was delicious. So creamy, smooth, well blended, sweet, and salty. With hints of caramel flavor. Yum! The Milk Bar Pie tastes like a caramel pie. It's sweet, buttery, and melts in your mouth. The B'Day Cake Truffles are shaped in cute little balls and have lots of sprinkles within. It tastes like vanilla cake batter. The Compost Cookie has everything but the kitchen sink in it. It's sweet, savory, and salty. Gotta love Milk Bar! After having visited their Los Angeles location some time ago, I was thrilled to learn that the Milk Bar flagship location was located in Washington, D.C. This location was much smaller and less busy than the L.A. store which was lovely. There are a handful of stores in the D.C. area, so I'm sure that alleviates the "hype" found elsewhere. Additionally, this space provided plenty of parking which is a huge plus. There are plenty of boardgames to entertain yourself while you enjoy your dessert, along with outdoor seating. They also host events regularly, including baking classes - dangerous! So yes, I stopped here twice on a single trip to D.C., I couldn't help myself! On my first stop, I ordered a B'Day Cake Milkshake. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am obsessed with cake batter flavored anything and Milk Bar is no exception. In fact, they've pretty much nailed the whole birthday cake / confetti / batter flavor thing. The Milkshake featured their delicious cereal milk and their wildly delicious cake batter "truffles" (I've stuffed my face with way too many of these bad boys - they're trouble!!!). So creamy, so sprinkly, so perfect. What more can you ask for? Well... for the B'Day Milkquake, which is another one of their frozen offerings. I ordered the Milkquake on my second visit during this trip. The Milkquake was very similar in taste, but much thicker, spoon most definitely required. I got the birthday cake slice of cake and shake as well as the truffles and found the cake fairly warm (was expecting cold) and the shake mediocre. I ordered a birthday cake for delivery on a Saturday for my Mom from milk bar delivered through a third party delivery service. It didn't arrive Saturday, or Sunday, or Monday. When it became clear it was going to be very delayed thanks to the shipping company, I reached out to Milk bar. They were quick to respond and resent another on Monday for delivery Tuesday. They even used a different delivery company the second time. It arrived midday Tuesday, still cold with the ice packs still frozen. It was very well received and looked amazing. I had been a fan of Christina Tosi for a while, so I was excited for the opportunity to finally try Milk Bar. I ordered the milk pie and the birthday cake truffles to share with friends, but both desserts were a bit too sweet for my preference. The milk pie concept was unique, and I would definitely recommend trying it. It had a great flaky crust and tasted a bit like condensed milk but in pie form! The birthday cake truffles were a bit underwhelming. 4.5 stars. They're missing a 1/2 star from me because they're overpriced. The 4.5 is mainly due to my obsession with their corn cookies--and now their chocolate cookies!! This location has a basic facade and a picturesque interior. It's a small-ish, narrow shop but it didn't feel cramped. They have cookies sealed in plastic ready for you across the counter and cakes to your right. The cakes were crazy expensive, like $49-99 depending on the size you get. The cookies were each almost $3 with tax I think, which is a bit much, but they are quite good. My fave, since I first tried their cookies in NYC, is the corn cookie!! It's just so unique, sweet, and crunchy. The crunchy edges have a bit of caramel taste to them. My second fave--after having tried it from this location and for my first time--is the chocolate cookie. I don't even like chocolate cookies but theirs were addicting to me. They just tasted so damn good. I also tried their birthday cake cookie. It tasted alright; I just wasn't in love with it. I tried the momofuku, and this place I tried the babyshake compost cookie. I liked it. It definitely was a sweet and salty taste with a crunch. I recommend a small size because it fills you up. The straw looks environmentally friendly but it's hard to drink all of the crunches at the bottom :( I'd say this place requires an acquired taste read more

Christina Tosi is literally a woman who's sweet but means business because her desserts are outstanding! I have literally tried Milk Bar in ALL DC LOCATIONS and they all do justice in terms of service and the availability of their menu items. Decor: This location is beautifully designed with a really nice charm in details! Love the small figurines, gift packaging and overall theme of the restaurant. The outside is filled with more seats and I love the Neon pink "Milk" sign at night! Price: I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because their items are a bit on the pricier side but nothing absurd. I personally think that the cost is worth its quality but definitely not something where you can consistently splurge on. Food: -Slice of Birthday Cake: MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship in having consistent layers with a crunch in each bite. Soft, light and a bit crunchy with well balanced sweetness! I love the creativity in recognizing that a flavor profile is so much more important in cake than just decoration. Words don't do justice to how delicious it is. Milk bar crafts a unique combination of different treats that all touch on a unique aspect of what makes dessert great. Their milkshakes are heavenly, their "Milk Bar Pie" (known colloquially as "Crack Pie") is, well, addicting. But their signature item is their cereal milk flavored ice cream. The unique flavor brings you right back to childhood and the flakes on top give it the perfect delicious crunch. Its a wonderful surprise when you're halfway through and the other half are waiting on the bottom. For birthdays, their cake will make you feel like royalty and certainly tastes as rich. I've had brushes with Milk Bar at several locations, and while some of the conditions match those in other reviews I've read, I don't hold it negatively in assessing the experience. I don't expect quick service, but rather a line out the door. I expect them to be out of some items because the food is so good they can't keep it in stock. This business "lacks" in the best ways, that are all indications of it's success at creating good dessert so good that people can barely get in the door fast enough to try it.
