To preface, I ordered it for delivery so I didn't eat it until about 20 minutes after it left the store! I ordered the vegan banana bread pudding with fudge ribbons on a chocolate chip cookie. The ice cream was pretty good!! There was ample fudge swirled throughout the scoop but I wish there were more banana bread pudding chunks because I only got maybe 2-3 chunks. The ice cream didn't taste vegan since it was creamy but I think this flavor was sitting for a while because there were areas of the scoop that were on the icy side. The chocolate chip cookie was fireee. It was chewy and had a wonderfully deep flavor beyond the basic chocolate chip cookie. I love Van Leeuwen ice cream pints so I'm glad I tried it freshly scooped . It is pretty pricey but def worth a try if you love their ice cream flavors! There was a pretty long line on a Sat night and we waited about 20 minutes, with two employees behind the counter. The guy who helped us was really nice, gave us a few samples, and then we both ordered two scoops. He didn't ask if we wanted a cone, just gave us a cup. I don't know if they even have cones. We had each selected two flavors, and after I was about halfway through mine, I realized that I only had one flavor. Too late to say anything. I had difficulty paying with inKind because I didn't realize that the minimum spend before tax and tip was $25. I bought a pint to get there, then it worked. Luckily the next day I noticed that I was double charged, $37.50 on my credit card (I was completely unaware, first time it happened on Apple Pay when I didn't know I had authorized a charge) as well as the charge by inKind. The employee had been nice so I tipped $5 which frankly I think is quite high especially since their prices already are high. $40 for two ice creams and a pint?! But seriously, didn't he see that my credit card had been charged? They must've been able to see it but I could not. I thought the ice cream was just OK. Honestly, for me not worth the calories. Beware, they sell pints for $12.50, which comes to $16.25/pint including tax and tip. Their pints were just on sale at Whole Foods for $3.99 but they're usually about $6. So in the store, they sell pints for around double the price at Whole Foods. I also didn't like the pint flavor - caramelized banana honeycomb sounds better than it tastes. The ingredients look pretty good so it could be the "natural flavor" which gives it a weird taste. FWIW natural flavors are anything but natural, it can be any combination of hundreds of chemicals. When I saw the double charge, I called my credit card company, which was a pain because they didn't just remove it like I thought they would, I had to file a dispute. I emailed Van Leeuwen and explained what had happened, that I had spent well over an hour on three different calls with the credit card company and apparently it was going to take about a month. They were very nice, credited back the double charge without the 30 day wait but they did not offer anything by way of making it right. I thanked them, and when they replied - happy to help, hope you'll come again soon I said tbh I'm not planning to after all of that hassle. With all of the great competition in Georgetown, that's shortsighted. If a customer has a negative experience in your store, it's just good business to give them a reason to come again. I don't like their flavors, they seem to combine about four different flavors in one which doesn't seem to work well. I'm going to stick with Thomas Sweet, IMO it's far better. read more

About to finish off the 2025 alphabet series with the last 3 reviews. Oddly enough my last 2 of 3 reviews are in DC, which is unusual considering it's rare I'm in DC these days. Representing 2025, V is for Van Leeuwen Ice Cream. My girlfriend & I had several things going on in DC on New Year's Eve. The real catalyst to get us in the District was the Capitals game. We ate in Chinatown, took a bus to Georgetown as we had a movie at AMC Georgetown, and New Year's plans in Petworth. So, it was a busy New Year's Eve! We had a little bit of time before our movie. First, we walked up to Compass Coffee on Wisconsin, which while barista was nice was underwhelming hot coffee drink. One of these days I'll get around to reviewing them. We asked her a dessert recommendation, which she said Levain Bakery is excellent. I knew they were good as I had once in Bethesda. We walked back down to M St, and there was a somewhat long line. The staff were moving like molasses no sense of urgency whatsoever, which I was complaining as our hot drink was starting to cool off. The woman in front of me in line recommended Van Leeuwen Ice Cream. My girlfriend & I agreed to walk back up Wisconsin to this ice cream shop. The guy was friendly letting us sample a couple of the flavors. I asked about the most popular sellers. I found out they started in NYC, I think Brooklyn. Prices are on the high side, but not surprising for a gourmet ice cream shop. We each got 2 scoops as it wasn't much price difference for 1 or 2 scoops. I got their cookies & cream and mango sticky rice. Wow, this was amazing, better than almost any ice cream I've had. If in DC or northern VA (none in MD), I'd definitely consider a return here. read more

Sunday was hot so my wife and I decided to have some ice cream. We waited in the long line and noticed people at the head of the line going in and returning to the line. Once it was clear there was space for the two of at the counter, we entered but were quickly "greeted" by a rude employee with an angry face. She loudly stated "we can't block the door" (we weren't blocking the door; my body was at the last stanchion in front of the counter) and then pointed at me yelling "YOU, you need to wait outside the door." The Seinfeld "Soup Nazi" episode immediately came to mind, except this was not funny. NO ONE needs to be treated like this with anger. We told the clerk that we don't need to be talked to like this and left the premises. Frankly, if the line and fire safety poses such a problem, it's probably worth the business dedicating an employee to manage the waiting line. Never got to try the ice cream but it doesn't matter because we're never going back. read more

Was looking for a late night sweet treat while in Georgetown and Van Leeuween came up as being open late. Stopped by for a scoop, but a double was only ~$1 more, so I figured why not. The line was out the door when we arrived, but the line moved quickly Decided on the sweet corn & blueberry jam and Bigface coffee affogato, but got a scoop of the Sicilian pistachio instead of the affogato. Didn't realize it until after I paid, sat down, and starting eating my scoops. Not a big deal as the pistachio flavor was going to be my next pick. Of the two flavors I got, I preferred the sweet corn & blueberry jam more as I could taste the flavor come through more. The pistachio was just okay to me. Both scoops definitely satisfied my sweet tooth, though. There's a few tables inside for you to enjoy your ice cream, but it could get a little cramped if the store is busy. read more

We stopped in for some vegan ice cream. The shop was pretty busy when we arrived. The line was almost out the door. One thing I know for sure is that this brand is consistently good. Before visiting their brick and mortar locations, I discovered their pre-packaged ice cream at Whole Foods, and quickly became a fan. Since my discovery of the Van Leeuwen brand, the vegan ice cream has been good consistently. The regular ice cream is very good as well, especially the honeycomb flavor. For an occasional treat, the ice cream is worth the price. The ambiance is cute. The service is not bad at all. There are sidewalk cafe tables set up outside. I am not sure if the tables are shared by Van Leeuwen and Blank Street, are separate and/or public, but on the day that we visited, the tables were filthy. Apparently, some customers did not think it was appropriate to clear the tables after using it. My question was and is, who is responsible for clearing the tables, customers or staff? read more

It's one of the few places open late. The ice cream is rich, creamy, and full of flavor, with a great mix of classic and inventive options -- plus vegan choices if you want something dairy-free. I'm a huge fan of Van Leeuwen's, and it seems like me and everybody else have the same idea to get a sweet treat on a hot Sunday in Georgetown. I tried one of their seasonal flavors, the blue jasmine and passionfruit, which was a little intriguing at first, but I really enjoy the contrast of the tart passionfruit with the floral jasmine. That being said, I feel like the service at this establishment could've been much improved. While I acknowledge that they were likely understaffed, it seems like the workflow was kind of convoluted and at times all workers were scooping ice cream, and there was nobody to check people out, leading to further delays. I luckily wasn't in a rush, so I didn't mind waiting, but the family behind me was very impatient, and it was frustrating to see that there were a line of people holding their ice cream, simply waiting to pay. Delicious ice cream, so glad another location opened up in Gtown! It's a bit tucked away and easy to miss, it's right off of Wisconsin Ave with a few chairs for outdoor seating. I came in for a mid day sweet treat and staff was probably the best part of the whole thing, really sweet and letting me try a flavor. I went with the blueberry corn flavor, as they were all sold out of the Mango sticky rice flavor I really wanted. I added sprinkles and it cost almost $10 for one scoop (though it is a large scoop). I will say I was pretty disappointed - the flavor in a full scoop was super icy and almost freezer burn ish. Comparable texture profile and creaminess to Ben & Jerry's but wouldn't put it at the top of the list for unique flavors or decadence for price. We stopped at Van Leeuwen's after a long and exciting day exploring DC. I have seen Van Leeuwen's pints at the grocery store, but never had a chance to try them. When we arrived, we were greeted by a very long line. The line did not move particularly quickly. This shop was quite different from other ice cream shops that I have visited, as they have strange and eclectic flavors to choose from. Lots of unique flavors with a large vegan menu too. I've seen their pints at grocery stores but never tried Van Leeuwen. When we came it wasn't too busy. They recently opened their Georgetown location and are partnering with Baked and Wired by releasing a limited edition Dirty Chai Cupcake flavor. Unfortunately they were out when we came, but I hope to try that soon. We ended up getting one scoop of the brown sugar cookie dough brownie; the small size, and two scoops with the vegan strawberry shortcake and cookies and cream; the medium. Looking back we should have gotten the 3 scoop size and combined our order. Would have saved us around $4. It is on the pricier side, and no half scoops to get two flavors in the small size. The workers were friendly and allowed us to sample flavors. They are also currently giving free stickers near the register.
