I am a Milk Bar fanatic. Over my four day trip to DC, I went to two different Milk locations 3x. This flagship is worth a visit because of the Milk Bar lab - they have new week-long offerings every Wednesday! For instance, I picked up chocolate chip truffles. But, they also have new "staple" items like the Coffee + Donut sundae (waffle cone lined with chocolate fudge -- filled with a choice of soft serve flavors & sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, coffee-flavored "sand" and topped with caramelized donut bites). I tried getting this right when they opened at 9am, but they don't start making the cones until later. Also, unlike other locations, they have various cake slices for sale. At most places, I've only been able to pick up the Birthday Cake slice. They have the chocolate malt one here! Next time I'm in town, I'm coming straight to his one. Milk Bar serves delicious desserts. Not sure why there seems to be a lot of haters on this Yelp page but Milk Bar (a part of the Momofuku family) has built up a great reputation for desserts you don't typically have access to. I've been to the other Milk Bar locations in Manhattan and was surprised to find one in D.C. randomly after eating at the nearby Le Diplomate. My experience was smooth and I appreciate that this spot is pretty spacious compared to the others. For any Milk Bar virgins, you obviously need to try a slice of crackpie and cereal milk soft serve with corn flake crunch. You won't ragret it! read more

My reaction to this Milk Bar location is just "meh". I've had the birthday cake that was shipped to a friend before and raved about it! It was shipped right to their door and was super moist and flavorful. It really was one of the best cakes and lived up to the hype. I've also had the cookies before that have been shipped to me and at the Las Vegas locations. They have funky combinations and are yummy! I was excited to visit their flagship store after walking past it a few nights earlier in DC. My friend and I went in the middle of the day on Friday. There were only a few people in line. The shop is very cute and I loved all of their merchandise. I couldn't decide between the famous crack pie or cake truffles. I went with the pie because the employee said it was her favorite. The piece was very small, but super rich and savory. It was so buttery and dense. I did really enjoy it! The oatmeal crust was the best part. My friend got a slice of the birthday cake, and it was hard. I tasted it and knew this was a different cake. It tasted like that single slice had been in the back of the fridge for a week. Super disappointing. I brought home a few cookies for my boyfriend, and I think they will be good since they were packaged. I definitely wouldn't make a point to return to this location or feel comfortable ordering a full sized expensive cake from here. read more

Beautiful place! Amazing photo-ops outside and inside the store. Very spacious compared to other Milk Bar locations. Christina Tosi was there herself teaching a birthday cake/truffles class during the grand opening on June 2nd weekend. I so wanted to go, as I consider myself to be obsessed with the looks of the birthday cake - why hide the beautiful layers with frosting or fondant when you can see the awesome layers from the outside immediately? Though "obsessed," I wasn't obsessed enough to spend $195 on the class. Maybe next time at the regular ~$95-ish pricetag. Maybe. Anyways, I was able to try a slice of birthday cake (yes, they have slices!), so I definitely was able to satisfy my craving. The bottom layer was very dense, but it was flavorful. The other layers were definitely moist, and it went very well with the texture. The crispy-ish bday cake crumbs went so well with the whole thing, adding some fun texture and extra flavor. Their birthday cake truffles taste similar to the cake, but sweeter, with a very soft texture. Based on that, I do prefer the cake itself! We also tried the birthday cake babyquake. We thought it would be more of a shake, but it came in one of their froyo cups, which was very cute. Sprinkles, good flavor, good texture. Ate it quick before it melted more on the hot day. We also got a tin of cookies. Very buttery, but delicious. My favorites are the confetti and the blueberry. They have a spot for lessons/events too. It looked very spacious, all brand new equipment. I can't wait to go back to try their other cakes by the slice or even buy some whole ones for special occasions! Their chocolate chip one supposedly has some passionfruit layers. Sounds so good! Beautiful layers, with distinct flavors. Yummmm!!!! Off topic - Since I didn't buy a whole birthday cake here, I decided to make my own. I was so excited to finally try Milkbar for my birthday this year! Especially after all the hype I'd been hearing since 2015 when they first opened in DC. I'd also just watched an episode of The Chef Show on Netflix where Milkbar's founder and chef Christina Tosi teaches the hosts how to bake some of Milkbar's staple treats. I couldn't just pick one, so I ordered 3 slices of cake including the birthday cake, chocolate birthday cake and red velvet cake for delivery. (Yes they do deliver!) With each slice of cake priced at $10, it was absolutely an indulgent move I wouldn't make on a regular...but it was my birthday! (I visited their website today and the price has gone up to $11) The order came in a bag with a note attached that read, "slice, slice, baby! XOXO" that was cute. I appreciated how everything was carefully packaged and you can tell someone actually cares about what's coming out of their stores. All of that aside, I didn't really care for any of the cakes. Of the three, my favorite was the chocolate birthday cake. There is a lot going on with rich and decadent cake, chocolate chips, frosting, crunchy birthday crumbs, (crumbled bday truffles) and rainbow sprinkles. I thought the chocolate cake was a better pairing with the frosting and other features vs. the regular bday cake and the red velvet cake was just too sweet with its cream cheese frosting. The location: When I first walked up to this spot, I thought "WOW this is one of the most hipster places I've been to." If the outside ambiance doesn't do it for you with its cute seating situation, the inside will: there is a bar & stool setup when you first walk in, and the walls have cartoon-y & fun map-art of the DC area. However, the area where you order food is a little small, and I wish there was more room to stand while you wait for your order. I noticed that once more people came into the store, there was hardly any place to stand. The food: SUCH interesting flavors, all completely spot on. The "cereal milk" and "chocolate covered pretzel" are soft serve ice creams, and absolutely nail those flavors. Even though they are so accurate, I wasn't a huge fan of the flavors. Is there such thing as being too accurate? I ended up ordering the "BDay Cake" milkshake - which also tasted exactly like birthday cake. It was very good, but I wish I had gotten a small rather than the regular size because of its intense amount of sugar. I also had the "chocolate chocolate cookie," which was a little bland, in which I wish there was more sugar! The service: I have to say, the employees were amazing! They greeted me right as I walked in, and were incredibly helpful when I wasn't sure with what I wanted to order. The girl working there, whose name I didn't catch, was so fun to talk to and convinced me to get the BDay cake milkshake, a choice I don't regret. Very pricey. I had fond memories of a slice of Crack Pie despite the $6 price years ago at the NY location, but was disappointed by my most recent piece at the Logan Circle location, even though the price was still $6. Sure, it's a crumbly brown sugar crust and gooey filling and a dusting of powdered sugar, but seemed pretty plain without any chocolate chips or other hidden treats to add to the pie filling texture. Didn't exactly devour it and won't crave it in the future. I also got a slice of the Confetti cake that came in at a whopping $9 a slice. To be fair, this was really two servings, and even though I tried my hardest, I could not finish it in one sitting. It's like a more upscale version of the box mix Funfetti cake of yesteryear. Multi-color sprinkles in the cake batter, frosting with more sprinkles, and some chunky confetti crumbles mixed into the icing as well. It's a pretty multi-layer cake slice, but I won't be dropping almost ten bucks on a another piece of cake anytime soon. Buying a whole cake for a special occasion for $45 or so seems kinda reasonable. My $17 to-go dessert experience was ok but a pricey splurge that didn't feel worth the calories or the price tag. The 6" birthday cake is incredible! By fiancé and I both get them for each other for birthdays because we love them so much. Amazing flavors. The perfect treat! I love that you can have them write your choice of text on the cake, too. I have also gotten the truffles and WOW they are just as great! The cookies are also amazing! My favorite is the one with cornflakes. They even have soft serve ice cream that is cereal milk-flavored (there are other flavors, too). I had the ice cream twist of Cereal Milk and Chocolate covered pretzel soft serve- although it's unique flavors and really does taste authentic and true to its name, the flavors did not sit well with my palate. The chocolate covered pretzel flavor was too salty, and the cereal milk reminded me of the soggy cereal -stage, when you have the leftover milk that had been through three batches of poured cereal. Really was not a fan and couldn't stomach more than 4 spoonfuls, but that's just me. I like the concept but the only execution didn't do it for me. We got three cookies: the compost cookie, confetti, and white chocolate blueberry. We also got the pie. So the compost cookie was not my thing at all! The coffee taste was too strong. The confetti was okay. The white chocolate blueberry was the best of the cookies. The pie was good but way too sweet. Like overwhelmingly sweet. There were 4 of us and when I say we didn't even come close to finishing the desserts, it's crazy. The four of us can usually run through 12 insomnia cookies lol. Milk bar has the most decadent cake I've had in a long time. I stopped by with a friend before going to a concert in DC. We didn't go with the intention of eating cake, but their cake was the best thing that we ordered. I ordered an iced americano and it looked and tasted like a very, VERY watered down shot of espresso. Imagine half of an espresso shot with like 12oz water. I'm wondering if that's what they did because my friend's latte tasted like half of an espresso shot with 12 oz of milk. I would recommend their desserts for anyone with a sweet tooth. Not sure why the flagship store does not carry a full menu. My wife and I ordered their classic ice cream, a slice of pie, along with some bday & strawberry truffles. I wanted to try their cakes, but I felt I was going to get diabetes by just looking at the calories (860-910 in ONE slice, this is a bit too much for what I can handle, sigh...the truth is I'm no longer a high school kid). Somehow, I feel it used to be better when it was at City Center. Honestly, if you blind test me, I would think these are some desserts from Safeway/Whole Foods (no offense to these two stores). Every year the Logan Circle location's alarm fails. For over a week, a piercing alarm near the "1525" sign blasts intermittently for five minutes at a time. I can hear it through my closed windows. I visited three days ago and the clerk said it would be fixed that day. I've called 311, I've emailed the store manager and the director of bakery operations, all to no avail. Love Milk, although it's not everyone's cup of tea. I've been to this location three times and my favorite part is that there's parking and it's spacious compared to the City Center location. Recently I tried the milk bar pie soft serve with sprinkles and I enjoyed the salty and sweetness of it. We also got a slice of cake to go which is always good. L O V E. I've stopped at Milk Bar far too many times for sweets and treats and it never gets old! My SO loves their cereal milk soft serve and I can always go for another slice of their "Milk Bar Pie", previously known as as another street savvy alias. I finally attended one of their classes and had a great time! The instructors gave us enough instructions for us to successfully layer/decorate our Birthday Cakes, but also gave us enough room to be creative! I was shocked to see how much frosting I'd actually need for their 6" cakes...but continued to use nearly the entire container of frosting. While your layers set, you then begin to make those delicious cake truffles...get ready for an immediate blood sugar spike!
