I've visited Van Leeuwen in New York and Los Angeles, so I was excited to check out the DC location. The shop itself was clean and offered a great variety of flavors, and the staff was friendly overall. However, the service felt a bit inattentive at times, as staff were engaged in conversation with someone they seemed to know while briefly assisting me. More importantly, I was disappointed with the quality control of the ice cream. When I sampled the Cinnamon Caramel Apple flavor, it appeared to have been left out of the freezer before being put back. By the time I ordered my scoop (along with Espresso Fudge Brownie), the Cinnamon Caramel Apple was already very melted and couldn't hold its shape at all. It was served almost shapeless and melting quickly, which made for a messy and underwhelming experience. For the price, I expected better handling and consistency. Hit this place up on a Sunday evening after being out in the heat all day. Minimal line, and once I asked, they let us sample a couple flavors before ordering. Got a single scoop of brown sugar cookie dough brownie. The brown sugar gives the base a toastier taste than regular cookie dough ice cream, and the cookie dough chunks and brownie pieces mixed in were both really good.
