I had some spokes broken on one of my expensive electric bikes and I needed them replaced. I had the tune up done and spokes replaced. It only took a day and a half and when I went in to get my bike it literally looked brand new! The bike looks great and runs great. While riding on the bike path about a mile away from Mill Race Bike Shop, I got a flat tire. I was able to patch the rear tire and replace the tube with a spare that I had. We rode to Mill Race to see if they had a replacement tire, which they did. The new tire and tube were installed and I also bought a spare tube to put in my bag. I also asked them to order another tire so that I could replace the front. I received notification that the tire was in. I went to pick it up and they had ordered the wrong tire. I asked for a refund and ordered my own. I used my spare tube when I changed the tire, so I went to Mill Race, today, to get a replacement spare tube. I brought the box from the tube and asked to buy another. Fortunately, I checked the tube box as it was being rung up as it was the wrong tube (schrader vs presta). When the Mill Race employee went to get the correct tube, he brought out 2 boxes and asked what size I needed. I told him to check the box that I brought in. "It's already been thrown out", he told me. I said I just brought it in a few minutes ago. Long story short, he sold me the wrong size, so I'll be going back tomorrow. This was a return visit to my former area of residence and have purchased bike parts from this facility in years past. They have always been a quality shop, so I looked forward to renting a bicycle for a few hours to enjoy another biking experience along the river hike/bike trail system. I was rather disappointed with the bike I was given. While fairly new looking, it had some serious problems (at least it was serious enough to Me) that this rental was a disappointment. Slack brake cables that would not adjust with the tension screw adjustments, a bent something on the main crank that make a "tick" sound (like it was hitting the kick stand) every revolution, and some type of derailleur miss alignment that caused the chain to slip in low gear. When climbing a hill and in low gear, the chain slipped, so as you are powering in to climb a hill, the bike chain gave way, thus losing momentum (and near damage to some critical body parts) when going up any incline that required any more effort other that simple cruising speed force. Perhaps I'm spoiled, but I have higher expectations from this facility given their rental rates. read more

Bruce was very helpful when my wife and I stopped in with her bike that needed some air but we didn't have the right piece for her kind of tire. He filled the wheels, adjusted her brake cable and also gave us some pointers about what the bike needed in maintenance overall. I recommend checking this shop out. read more

I stopped by at this shop along the Fox valley trail with a problem with a specialized e bike . I didn't buy the bike from them but seeing they are a dealer I went in for advice. my issue was my range extender battery was shorting out my e bike and when I plugged in the extender the motor would turn off. the guy at the counter was not helpful at all. he didn't even look at my bike nor did he offer a solution other than dropping it off. so I left. after contacting another dealer he said I should check on the cable that plugs into the bike, look for a lock tab, once plugged in turn the tab to lock cable secure . problem solve! you would think a common issue could be resolved by first spending a little time into the problem. never would I recommend this shop read more

I bought my bike at end of season arboretum sale that is run by Mill Race. I received a quote for $73 to fix the bike I bought from them, but told upon pickup it would be $175. This is the second repair Ive had there due to a few bike mishaps and with those two repairs, I've now given Mill Race more money than the original purchase price. They were polite at every interaction but I question the reliability of their quotes if this is how they work. Final note, couldn't they've at least wiped down my bike for that price? My frame was full of bike path dirt and streaks and it wouldve been nice to get it back clean. I won't go back. read more

First off, I speak with Bruce on the phone regarding my 7 year old's bike. Told him it was brand new and I simply could not get the brakes right...as silly as that sounds. He is like we can take it and it will be $15 for a brake adjustment and you will likely get it back tomorrow even though they are backed up. I immediately get in my car and bring in my daughter's bike. Pass Bruce in the lobby and he says hey we just talked, right? I state, yes, thanks for your help and I'm embarrassed to be bringing this new bike in, but not going to risk it not to be set up perfectly for my daughter. Bruce left. Everything was fine at this point, then the young repair guy comes to check me in with an immediate attitude. He's like what's wrong with the bike? I tell him it is new and simply cannot get it set up perfectly and I've been working on it for 45 minutes. Again, I'm not a bike mechanic/technician... He goes, well seems to be a job...absolutely making it sound like a lengthy thing to handle and he was annoyed. I'm like this is something difficult for you guys? He goes, "no, it's a job" and then goes on to define what a job is...for reason unknown. I'm like okay...well, can I check it in? He states it will now be $30 ($15 per brake) and that I won't get it back for a week plus. I'm like I just spoke to the gentleman who left just now on the phone. He is like, take it up with him...and continued to be a absolute smart ass about it. Obviously, he is backed up and frustrated with "100+ bikes", but absolutely awful at customer service. I was nothing but decent to the kid and he was the opposite. I've given this place my business before for other things, but never again will I step foot in here. Maybe they don't care, and that is fine. The sad part is that it is not owner's fault here, but he unfortunately needs to account for the folks who work for him. Even though I live close, I will be heading to St. Charles or somewhere else to get my work done for my daughter (although now out of spite I will try again) and for the rest of my family moving forward. This shop, which has a great location and is near my house, is a HUGE disappointment! The service as it concerns bike repair and tube ups is not only bad, but flat out dishonest. The owner was dishonest with me, and the repairs done, for what was promised, garbage. I had two arguments with them based on their unwillingness to really fix my bike's problems. He even tried to lie me into the idea that my small de-railed was supposed to be missing teeth. I will likely contact the BBB due to the cheating here. Avoid! read more

Avoid Mill Race Cyclery at all costs! I purchased 2 bikes a year ago totaling $3,500 for my wife and I. The older gentleman that helped us at the time of purchase was friendly and helpful. This is where my good experience ends. I returned a few weeks later with another rider from my group who was interested in purchasing a new bike. We where helped by a younger associate who treated us with absolute disrespect. We promptly left and my riding mate purchased a $2,500 bike from a store in St. Charles an hour later. Fast forward to last week. I take my bike in for a possible warranty issue, with a wheel. The same younger salesman I dealt with previously tells me they don't deal with my brand of bike. When I inform him that they sold it to me he, then tells me that I need to check my bike in. They will call me in a few days because it is an involved service. When I asked what is so "involved" he tells me "I have to take the wheel off and let the air out". After some discussion he very reluctantly agreed to look at my issue at that moment. In total it took him 2 minutes to checkout my issue, once he agreed to look at it. This was the worst experience I have ever had at any bike store! On my way home I stopped at a different bike shop and asked them to look at my issue. Without hesitation they looked at my bike on the spot. Great location but horrible staff. I dealt with three different employees and all of them were very rude, especially the one who checked us in. No instructions on changing gears or the brakes or anything. Gave us a bike, that's it. No helpful tips on trails or location. We didn't want to ask too many questions because they were all so rude and you could tell they just wanted us to leave. My seat wasn't tightened properly and fell down 10 minutes in to the ride. We were staying in Chicago visiting family and wanted to get away somewhere that we could work in a day biking. Milk Race was recommended by another bike shop that didn't have anything available. The reservation process was easy, and we ended up renting a couple of e-bikes. The bikes were high quality Specialized bikes that performed beautifully. The staff were very knowledgeable about the trails in the area (the shop is right on the Fox River trail) as well as good stops along the way. It was a great experience overall, and a fun addition to a weekend away. We'll be back when we're in the area again. read more

So last year this was my favourite cycling place...they had nice people-knowledge staff a good amount of merchandise...they have just let me down completely and 100%. None of the same awesome people they had are there anymore. The level of knowledge just isn't there. They may have been a great shop years ago in 2007-2012 but now they have new people who are a bit rude and unfriendly and not knowledgeable...and a little arrogant. I don't want to totally bash this store because it is a local business but let me just say now looking back they overcharged me on MSRP on all of the items I purchased here-The claim is that they add the charge because they set up things like your clips and pedals on your clipless so they tack on additional prices-I have never heard of that before...they charged me $700.00 over MSRP for my bike-I won't be coming back to this bike shop and I have moved onto another bike shop. I ran into another former customer and she stated the poor business practices that she had to deal with. Go in for yourself and see...but make sure you do your research before you go into this store especially on manufactures pricing...and other shops pricing. I think it is just sad what this place has evolved into. Which is a horrible place that doesn't feel bad about ripping off their customers. read more

I recently bought an Electra Cruiser here. I found the bike I wanted and was able to complete the transaction quickly. A few weeks later when I brought the bike back for a small adjustment, the service was fast, friendly and the repairman spent the time to explain the intricacies of the shifter on my bike to prevent further visits for the problem. The salesman remembered me and asked how I was liking the bike I purchased. Interactions with the employees of this shop are always pleasant and informative. Better still, I received a card in the mail thanking me for my purchase and giving me $25 off my next purchase. This is a great place to buy a bike - I recommend it highly. Bought my bike here almost 20 years ago and have always enjoyed the personal service! Had a flat tire today and called to see if they were able to fix if I drove it down today. Person on phone very helpful and said to "bring it in". Even though I have moved to St. Charles, I believe in customer loyalty, so brought it in. They had several people in the shop and when my turn came, "David" asked what I needed and I asked if he could fix the tire. He said no problem. I asked if he could show me how to take the tire off in case I was stuck on a bike path and he was very good about showing me. He replaced the tube in no more than 10 minutes, charged $25 and I was on my way! That's good service and very appreciated!! read more

Stopped here after taking a somewhat fantastic spill on my bike just off the trail. It was close and something was seriously wrong with my handlebars. Anyway... the guy working the register came out and took a look - he actually spent several minutes with my bike, tightening and retightening; testing the steering and the wheel alignment. Long story short, he fixed it - and when we asked what the charge was, he waved us off. I had heard this place was somewhat overpriced and that they charge for everything, but my experience was super-pleasant and greatly appreciated, so I will definitely be back. (For the record, I don't mind paying more more to shop local, so "overpriced" is relative and certainly not reflective of my own particular experience here.) read more

We came here to rent bikes to ride up and down the Fox River. I've seen it regularly when going through downtown Geneva, but wasn't sure if this was the best place to go. They have a small parking lot right in front of the building which is never full and pretty convenient. We asked for rates and it's $15 for 2 hours on the comfort and $17 for 2 hours on the hybrid with $30 for the tandem bike. I asked for a recommendation from the staff and they clearly explained the differences between the bikes so that we could make a decision. We checked out a couple of other places but they weren't open and another had options which were more for full day than short-term rentals. The rental process was pretty quick and we decided to pass on the helmets since we were going to ride casually and stay on the paths. The bikes were the right size for us and they were easy to adjust and fix (chain fell off twice because I had switched gears at the wrong time). We had a great time with the bikes and returned them considerably over 2 hours later but they only charged us for 2. We also checked out the store for bikes and they had a pretty big sale selection. Some of the models were pretty reasonably priced but we weren't ready to buy. Overall, a great place to rent bikes and the staff was definitely friendly and knowledgeable even to other customers in the store. Hopefully, we'll be buying rather than renting soon! read more

Their prices are reasonable, they rent quality bikes (last time they were Specialized), took the time to properly fit both of us, bikes were well tuned. Mill Race is a great all around bike store. It is a friendly store, and a biker friendly store. This is evident the moment I walked through their back doors for our first tandem tune up. The automated door opened appropriately for me to wheel our big two wheeler straight into the shop. Oh, and parking in their lot provided easy load and unload for our bike. Andy seems to be a top notch bike mechanic, with reasonable pricing, and quick turnaround. Our tandem requires a fair amount of attention. Mill Race is our go to bike store. read more

The owner helped us even though he was in the middle of something else because his staff was tied up with other customers. He was extremely knowledgeable and helped us get exactly what we were looking for even though we were on a budget. I would strongly discourage someone from shopping at this location. I was running errands with a friend who needed to stop by the shop. There was some kind of miscommunication on pricing. My friend was very calm, cool, and collected simply explaining the miscommunication. She wasn't even asking them to honor their quote. I really wish I had gotten the guy's name who spoke with her because oh. my. goodness. This guy got so stinking worked up. His posture was aggressive, shoulders forward, eyebrows down, slamming around papers, raising his voice!! I was blown away. She is 5 feet tall and not combative in the slightest. Holy moly. The staff was right the comfort bikes have lots of problems the chain kept jumping the sprocket I spent most of the two hours pulling the chain out of the spokes and trying to fix their bikes not worth the money. I just wish the staff would have told me that before the bike ride not after. If you do rent from them bring tools and something to clean your hands be prepared. read more

This is my go to bike shop hands down. I bought a Specialized Allez last summer from them and I love it. Bruce and the staff are always welcoming and they never try and sell you. Every time I've had a problem with my bike they've been extremely helpful and are always happy to explain what was going on with the bike. I will not be going back to Mill Race Cyclery. As a 40 year experienced Cyclist / Bicycle Mechanic and degreed Mechanical Engineer, I look to local shops for odds and ends, small parts, cables, supplies and sometimes help with a special tool that I may not have. I am very familiar with all the processes required to build and tune every type of bicycle. Today I needed 10 seconds of help with seating a headset race on a fork. I don't have the right tool for this. I was told that they were too busy (on this snowy day in February). This is a 10 second task. Too busy, leave it for a couple days.... Who knows what the charge would have been. I went down to Sammy's in St Charles, and they were happy to take 8 seconds to help me out. I was willing to pay, but they said there was no charge. Extremely horrible service. I spent over 400.00$ on a Haro BMX Bike and a friend bent the rear rim. So of course they did NOT have it in stock. Which I guess is fine.. however, I had to special order it which was "supposed" to take a few days (3-4). I had to call back 2 WEEKS later and the gentleman said, "oh...uh...uh...hold on let me check" .. 10 min later on hold .. "oh yeah its here" Well thanks for the call ill pick it up in 2 weeks since Im already out of town on vacation. I would have picked it up before Inleft but never recieved the call that I was told I would get when they recieved the rim. Then my friend goes in to pick up the rim for me and they say they sold it to some other customer. First of all how can you stay in buisness when you sell other customers special ordered parts to first come first serve. They so called "manager" that I spoke to was extremely rude saying he had no time to talk and was busy. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO NOT!!!! GO TO THIS STORE !!! THEY DO NOT TREAT YOU HOW A CUSTOMER SHOULD BE TREATED. There are other shops like " The Bike Rack" located near by. Its worth driving the extra 5 minutes to go to another store thats more professional. I dont get how these people sleep at night doing this to people. Please DO NOT GO HERE !
