The girlfriend and I just rented bikes from Mill Race Cyclery to use for several hours, and we were completely satisfied. The shop is located right along the Fox River Trail (which is great for biking, rollerblading, and walking), their prices are totally reasonable, and the bikes were comfy and in really good condition. I brought in a 15+ year old bike that needed professional help with the derailleur (I was fed up). They said they couldn't salvage it and I needed to buy a new one and a chain. OK, understandable. I left them too it with the expectation they would get to it by the end of the week. Two hours later I got a call. It was done! The mechanic did beautiful job and was so polite and personable. Same is true with the sales associate. I will return (if my bike looses it on me again). read more

Brought my bike in to look at breaks. The quote was over $800 to replace front and rear brake set. Concerned cost was out of line. Took bike to another large bike store where they diagnosed breaks as just needing to be bled and adjusted and a new chain was added for total of $109. The bike works great. Are the technicians incapable of diagnosis or was I getting fleeced? read more

Rarely do I write bad reviews. I bought the bike ( loved it) and was promised one free tuneup. I was out of town for a lot of 2016, and now that it's warmer and I'm back, I was looking forward to tuning the bike up and going out for a ride. I called yesterday to ensure I could drop the bike off (I'm 30 miles away) and it would be free. I was assured it was. After the bike was dropped off, I was later called and told that it would be a $69.99 charge for a tune up because I didn't do it in 2016. I explained that I bought the bike there with a free tune up included and confirmed yesterday before it was driven out there that it would indeed be free. Mills Cyclery denied the free tune up since I've had it a while and said their employees must have given me the wrong information!?. This trip actually cost us money since we had to take the bike out there. There is nothing more irritating than a company withdrawing their promises. I will never be back, and I would advise others to go with a company that sticks to word. read more

Warning! Do not purchase anything here! I bought a bike bag, an under seat wedge. It would not stay put under my bike seat and actually fell down and dragged on my tire. Brought back to store for refund. Mike told me it's not defective and I installed wrong so he's not really sure what I want him to do. I explained that I called the manufacturer who said return it to the store. I DID NOT install it wrong, although Mike continued to tell me I had. I even explained to Mike that another associate had checked my installation as I had stopped in to purchase the bag while I was riding! Mike was very rude! I told him that there were plenty of other stores in the area and that I would not be returning. He didn't care. Told me that was my choice. My other experiences were not as bad, but I have never felt that this store cared much about customer service. There is local competition and I would recommend consumers shop at their stores! read more

Great location, but poor customer service and lack of knowledge by employees - at least the one's I've encountered. I've given MRC several chances and they have struck out 3 times. 6 months ago -No sealant for my tubeless mtn bike tires in stock .... went to Heavenly, they had, no problem with inventory for a common item. 1 yr ago had a stuck seat post and wondered if they would take a look at it. Was met with very negative sounding shop guy and was told to try somewhere else. This week - had a problem with my Avid Sram XO disc brakes and called them. Was again met with negative attitude and a "not sure if we even have a bleed kit for it" " but bring it by and we may be able to look at it and maybe then work on it in 10-14 days". Mechanic then suggested for faster service, try Heavenly. What? The mechanic did not even know if they had a bleed kit for it?? Come on. They obviously don't need my business. I called Journey Cycles in Aurora and Pete said bring it by, they will fix it ....and he knew he had a bleed kit for it. Problem solved in 24 hours.....By another bike shop!! My husband took me here last week so that we can finally buy bikes again. Side note*his old bike got stolen and mine got hit by some lovely woman's Lexus* Anyways...we walked in and it was only about 20 minutes from closing time and I felt really bad for coming in so late but the guys that worked there made us feel nothing but comfortable and welcome! We asked questions and they got answered with some of the best answers I have ever heard from a sales associate. The difference between the guys here and the people elsewhere is that these guys really love bikes, biking and everything that goes into it...so that alone will make me recommend them to anyone I know! They were so helpful and friendly that we couldn't help but buy bikes a wee more expensive than we originally planned on spending...but after their explanation to which bike would be best for my 80 year old back...I couldn't help for opt for the $450 bike! Whoops! There went the bank account! HAHA! But seriously...if you need anything biking related...GO HERE! So we joined the Morton Arboretum and today was our first day we went there. We decided to rent a few bikes from the booth owned by this company. The bikes were fine and the ride around the park was beautiful....heres where the one star review comes in......when you rent bikes, they make you sign a doc and leave your drivers license to ensure you return the bike..we returned the bikes only to find they lost my license. I travel ALOT for business so my id is critical and now I dont have one..so if the reason they take your id is to make sure you bring the bike back, what if they don't have my id?? I should have shoved the bikes in the car and left..seriously...i told the owner that I expect a refund of my rental fee since now I have to waste a half day trying to get a new license. He seemed surprised which was even more strange....really? He said they would refund me which I haven't seen yet. Also haven't got a call nor email stating updates on their search...i spoke at length with the Members office at Morton and they aren't happy with the situation either. It's a mess and the process Mill Race Cycle uses to rent there is terrible and unorganized. I have a feeling Morton will be involved here. read more

I bought a bike online for my son. I called two other bike shops to see if they would assemble. The Bike rack, after telling me they would charge $250, and I agreed, said they would just take a pass. Clearly did not want to be bothered, which is their right, but you quote me a price, I agree, and then say, "We'll just take a pass". Thanks so much. Called the one in batavia, and they said they would have to see it before they woujld know-not convenient, since it have to be unopened for me to return it. called Mill Race Cyclery, they said sure (didn't hem and haw, din't say they would have to see it first or whatever. They charged me $120 and finished before their estimated date and did a great job putting the bike together. It's the only place I'll go from now on. read more

Wow, I have been struggling to find a place that can pick up and deliver my bikes. So many shops make you wait for weeks to get in for spring tune ups and repair. Bruce said, "Sure, I will come and pick up your four bikes TOMORROW. Pick up is free and delivery is $10!" Holy cow I am pretty excited and grateful since I was really dreading trying to pick up all four bikes and get them over to a shop and wait for weeks to get an appointment and scratch my car and hurt my back getting them over there. Bruce just made my day, so give him a call and get riding for the summer!! read more

Spur of the moment we decided to rent bicycles to take advantage of the temporary beautiful Chicagoland weather. Within 15 minutes of that decision we were on the Fox River path heading south to Batavia. Excellent so far. Price was right, $15 for 2 hours, easy process for rental although staff wasn't very friendly or personable. However they were very efficient. The disappointing part was the flat tire shortly before we got to Batavia. Prairie Path Cycles took excellent and immediate care of the flat, no charge (note: no object was found in the tire to cause the flat). While waiting outside during the repair process I was reacquainting myself with some of my former bicycle skills (not a good idea when you haven't been on a bike in more than 20 years) and I took a spill. I'm not sure who sustained more damage my elbows or the bike, but both clerks from the bike shop came out to see if I was ok and they were shocked to see that the handle bars and front wheel were totally out of alignment. One comment to us was that the handle bar assembly was dangerously loose and should not have become so twisted from my fall. They felt it was likely that the loose handle bars was what might have cause the fall. What this all boils down to is our advice to check the condition of your bicycle before you take off. Just because you're renting from a reputable place doesn't mean each bike is in perfect condition. read more

We live in Geneva and have had a couple of bad experiences here, as have our neighbors. Very simply, if you bring your bike in for service and you enjoy getting ripped off, this is the place for you. They invariably will call to tell you the bike needs other things and that if you don't have it done, something bad will happen. We refused and later took the bike to another shop, who told us the repairs or service suggested were unnecessary. read more

Third trip to this store for a simple purchase. The staff is completely incompetent. The owner does not respond to emails or phone calls. They took our money, but have no record of it after the fact. We were forced to dispute the charge after the rude employee refused to call the owner or do anything at all to actually rectify the situation. 3 visits, many calls, multiple unanswered emails, and all for nothing in the end. The guys across the street are always on the spot. I should have known better. read more

My wife and I went here on the recommendation of our friends and some neighbors. They said the place was awesome, and I will admit their selection is awesome, their downfall was their deceptive bait and switch practices. I checked out their sale item list that states if it's on the list it's in the Geneva store for sale. Well... after checking out the sales list and finding a rental Electra Townie they were selling, my wife and I took a trip in to purchase it, like the sales list said to do. We get there and the guy shows us the new ones not the rental in question, then says they aren't available for sale until after the rental season. I told him that was the only reason we came in was for that particular bike that was on the list. We left disgusted and after further discussion and more time, we called back stating our disgust to Rob and how it felt they were publishing these items on the list to get foot traffic into the store, Rob had no explanation other than it must of been an oversight on the Web guys part. He said he'd call the owner and see what they could do and get back to us. Well... he got back to us today and said they couldn't do anything but let us put a deposit down to purchase the bicycle in October. I mean that makes sense, that's how I buy my bikes, cars etc.. pick them out, pay for them 90days before picking them up and getting to use them. Since yesterday at least they took our advice and removed the Bait from their sales sheet, and for that I give them 1 star. read more

This is a wonderful cycle shop. I have been a customer for about 4 or 5 years. I have bought a few bikes from them. I have rented bikes from them, I have even bought one of their rental bikes. I have taken a basic bike service class at the Geneva location. I have had various service issues taken care of by this shop and I even rode on their cycle trainers this past winter a few times. I find the staff to always do their utmost to please me, as a customer. They are knowledgeable, helpful and very good at servicing my bikes. I have several bikes in our family that were not bought at this shop, from manufacturers other than the ones they normally sell. They have always done wonderful service work and taken the time to explain to me the issues involved in my bike repairs. They offer cycling rides during the season free of charge to any that care to join them at all different levels of riders. That is right, all their rider are FREE! They have nice quality clothing and bike accessories available. read more
