We returned to Millie's this weekend after having moved away from Richmond a few years ago. My wife always likes to have the non-breakfast items for breakfast and loved her Thai spicy shrimp noodle bowl, I had the carnitas breakfast bowl special and it was great. Millie's is phenomenal! If you want simple eggs and bacon for brunch, this is not the place for you. Millie's has savory food packed with flavor. The devil's mess and eggs Benedict were fantastic! We also ordered the specialty poundcake, which had the best whipped cream on top, but it was expensive for a small dessert. The owner/manager was super friendly. This place was worth the 45-minute wait because the food was so good and the people were so nice. While waiting, you can order drinks at the bar. There is free street parking, but it was sparse because there is housing nearby and there were a lot of people around. There isn't much room in the front room, but there is another back room and limited outdoor seating. This is a MUST-TRY in Richmond! Other than the desserts, I think the prices were very fair. They are also open for lunch and dinner, but I recommend the Sat/Sun brunch. They do not take reservations and are closed on Mondays. read more

Millie's...worth the Sunday brunch wait? Ok, I started this review a while back and never got around to finishing it. However, I've been back since have changed my rating from 3 to 4 stars... The dish with the scrambled eggs, bacon, lobster & puff pastry is definitely worth the long wait! ...It's a little pricey and drinks while you wait add up! However portion sizes are pretty large. Millie's is busy on a Sunday morning brunch with good reason. I had the Devil's Mess and it was filling and flavorful. True to the name the Devils Mess was a mess of eggs, meat, cheese and potatoes and tastes like what you would expect it to. I could have done without the $2.75 mediocre coffee though. Next time I will try the lobster puff pastry- I'm curious to see how Millie does their other less traditional egg-centric dishes. Will definitely be coming back again! read more

What a great little restaurant...the food was wonderful, and our server was such a nice guy. Every dish was seasoned perfectly. Our table was comfortable, and the place has a nice urban vibe. Without a doubt, the most phenomenal diner food I've ever tasted. I can't remember the name of the dish I got, but it had the tastiest "everything" bagel I've ever eaten, topped with smoked salmon, yummy potatoes, and perfectly poached eggs with an incredible hollandaise sauce. I've never wanted a meal to last longer! The only reason I give 4 stars is due to a pretty long wait for a table (probably 30 minutes or so, though I will say it was a Sunday around noon), with no where to sit and wait. Standing in line for that long, between the hot kitchen and cold air blowing in from the door, was rather uncomfortable. It was pretty cool to be able to watch the chefs at work, though! We have been going to Millie's since 1990, but only about every ~9 months these last few years due to the abundance of choices in RVA. Our meal on a Friday night was no exception to the high quality food. The chicken was tender, juicy and packed with flavor. My wife had the scallops...they were tasty, but not cooked as described on the menu (menu said coconut sauce, but they came with a yellow mustard sauce). The bread was also particularly good. On the opportunities, Millie's really needs to create a signature salad...something w mixed greens and items that will hit the bullseye. One of my constant haunts in going there is the salad options always fall short. A second opportunity was our waiter. Really nice guy, but a bit out of it. He kept trying to deliver our items to surrounding tables. It was funny, actually, and added to the enjoyment of the night. Another quirky thing was how he poured our beers...fast and straight at the bottom of the glass, producing a glass w 90% foam. I am all for releasing the gas, but that was extreme. Millie's is one of my favorite if not my favorite brunch spot in Richmond. It has a retro diner vibe with eclectic juke boxes and unique decor but obviously what makes Millie's great is the food. I always get the Devil's Mess without fail because it's just so good. It's an open faced omelette with spicy sausage, topped with white cheddar and avocado. I think the tomatoes and mild curry is what gives it that extra kick. Also the breakfast potatoes are so BOMB, super flavorful with the right amount of char and crisp. My only gripe is that usually there is a wait here even if you get here before 11am on the weekends and there isn't much space to wait inside. But I guess while you wait you can grab mimosas or a cocktail at the bar. read more

With loathsome trepidation, I post this 2-star review of Millies. Until our recent dinner visit, I would have dared anyone to not give this place 5 stars. It is a foodie institution in RVA. Having not been here for perhaps 2 years, and even then usually for Brunch, I have clearly been missing the sad decline. Back in the day, keywords of many Millies visits: "original", "fresh", "wow". No more. First, we arrived at 6pm on a Friday, and we were the only diners in the whole place. Big clue. Second, I ordered the famous spicy Thai shrimp. The recipe was completely different than the one that made Millies famous. At any place else, this would not have been a bad dish. But, come on.... at Millies? The peanuts were over-emphasized, and the sauce was not very tasty. Third, my wife ordered the steak (I don't recall the old Millies serving steak), which was tough and almost had a pickled taste with too much vinegar in the seasoning. By the time we left, the place was half full. There was not the usual wait-listed crowd on the sidewalk to witness our exit and to envy us. To Millies Management: If your chefs left, hire them back! If the ownership has changed, you'd better re-assess your investment tactics. Without the food, your customers will no longer see "quirky-chic", but will instead see the lack of adequate ventilation, grunge (not the good kind), and a restroom that is unacceptable. read more

I was here last time I was in Richmond and remembered the Bloody Mary being great, but couldn't remember the food. That's hard to believe after coming out here for the second time. Bloody Mary was just as good as I remember, but the food really made my day. I got the shrimp and grit special that was smothered in sausage gravy. YYYUUUUUMMM! The fork just slid out of my mouth with every mouthful - it was so silky. The sausage gravy was refined. It tasted more like hollandaise then sausage gravy, but the meat was there and gave it a kick. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the grits was the foil that made all the richness work. An excellent meal. The spouse got the cajun mess and it was good, but I felt sorry that he wasn't more outgoing. Next time, I'm doing the soft scrambled eggs with lobster. read more

So this place was awesome. I wanted brunch with mimosa and I got that. I tried the devils mess cause it looked like everyone who goes here gets it. The atmosphere is quaint kinda old time and an obvious favorite of the locals. The mimosas are a nice size but not bottomless. They also had homemade desert. My wife and I were driving through Richmond and wanted a good hearty breakfast/lunch. I had the Devils Mess and she had the turkey sandwich. The Devils Mess was very good. Lots of sausage. The proper amount of spicy. A good balance flavor. And then they put those potatoes on the side which are really good. Lots of cumin and spice as well. My wife had the turkey sandwich which also looked good. Great portions of turkey, bacon, and cheese. Plus it came with those same potatoes I mentioned above. All in all, if you want some good home style/greasy spoon food with a friendly and comfortable environment, give this place a shot. read more

It looks like a cozy diner by looking at the outside patio seating and vintage inside decor, the but the food is essentially gourmet!! I have been here twice. The first time for a bloody Maria and a Devils scrambles egg mess which was filling and satisfying with zest and lots of flavor. This time I had the salmon puff pastry. Oh my goodness that puff pastry was flakey and buttery and warm with a creamy potato and salmon inside. There wasn't a whole lot of salmon but I can't complain since for a salmon dish, the price was comparable to any other brunch special. The potato hash on the side had a spicy kick and came with a hollandaise sauce for the puff - I hate bland broasted potatos and these did not disappoint at all :) the folded scrambled eggs filled out the meal. The waitresses were friendly and quick to refill my coffee cup. I'll certainly be coming back to this place for a delicious, cozy brunch. read more

My daughter and I tried to get into Millie's for breakfast a few months ago but the wait was too long for us that day. We finally made it back on a different weekend morning. The wait was still about half an hour, and we arrived just thirty minutes after they opened. The tough part is that there's no comfortable place to wait when it's cold and windy outside. The hostess was nice though and brought out coffee to those who were looking for a way to stay warm. Once seated inside service was fast and friendly. My daughter ordered the marinated chicken sandwich and I had a breakfast special which was a breakfast burrito with brisket. The potatoes came as a side to both of our meals but neither of us really enjoyed them. My daughter found her sandwich to be good but not something she'd order again. My burrito was also good and I thought the brisket was very good. This place is clearly a very popular choice for brunch. I'd come again but will always budget in the wait time. read more

I was eager to try a Richmond institution and was prepared to wait. Before I waited, however, I did want to know how long I'd be waiting. Based on the teeny size of the restaurant and the wall to wall people standing in the entryway packed in like sardines I thought it might be longer than I was prepared to wait. We walked by the people waiting outside and shouldered through the throng to stand and wait for a server. An older gentleman with an apron and a pad came up to us. I smiled, "Hi, just a question, how long is the wait?" He asked how many in my party, I told him. He wrote it down. Again, I asked "How long is the wait?" He smiled, clearly ignoring me. He asked for my name, I told him, he wrote it down. Once again I asked how long the wait would be. Now I was getting frustrated. He chuckled and turned to the other people waiting, grandstanding, building up for the dramatic moment. When he was sure he had everyone's attention, he looked over his shoulder into the restaurant and indicated that it was packed. People started smiling, waiting for his punchline. "Oh, I don't know. Two weeks? A year? Could be days, really." Everyone around me started laughing. I was the butt of the joke. I felt like I was in high school again, an unwitting mistake on my part making me the object of scorn at the cool kids table. Clearly I'd made some sort of gaffe, but I didn't know what. Is asking how long I might be waiting for a table unreasonable? I certainly don't think so. Stricken, I looked over my shoulder at my husband while everyone laughed. His jaw clenched, my husband glared at the man, then grabbed my hand, turned and pulled me out of the restaurant. We got to the door before the man pushed through the crowd, "Wait!" he called. We were out the door, he followed us out into the street, "Wait! I don't know, maybe an hour?" We kept walking, "Some PEOPLE!" He yelled, "HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR!" A few of the people waiting outside laughed. I can laugh it up with the rest of them but not when the joke is on me or when the jokester is just being mean. If you have social anxiety and/or don't like being made fun of for asking a seemingly reasonable question, don't go. read more

Our waitress became irate when we explained that one of our party members had a set of severe food allergies. She then ignored the allergies listed and suggested dishes that would have sent my friend into allergic shock. I'm optimistic that this was just an incidental occurrence, or a bad night, but when I explained that he truly was allergic, and that we were not trying to be obnoxious, she stared at me like I was from mars. Ultimately, we left in frustration, leaving behind a 24% tip, limitless frustration, unwarranted mockery, and my former favorite richmond restaurant. My friend with the allergies? I hate to write bad reviews! But after eating dinner here last night, I felt the need to share. My dad and I went here for a Father's Day celebration of such. He's been here many times growing up and I've been there once before. When we walked in around 7:30, it was pretty calm; we were seated right away without a reservation--sweet! Unlucky for us, we were pretty close to the stove. We commented to the two chefs right before we sat down--"how do you stand that heat??" It just seems cruel! That being said, pretty soon we were enduring some of that same heat--and continued during our long meal. Also--the bar chairs squeak like nothing else. Like nails on a chalkboard. We received drinks fast--many thanks! And the cornbread and warm bread and soft butter were really yummy. Then, we ordered and received our appie pretty quickly (the peppers--they were ok) and waited. And waited some more. Our server did come by a few times and assured us it would be "just a few more minutes." We received our food at 9. It was incredible how long it took, especially with barely anyone there! Unfortunately, the food was terrible. My dish had some sort of mustard sauce that was way too strong and buttery and salty. I knew even looking at my Dad's that he was experiencing the same kind of thing. His pasta was doused in butter and cheese. After the 100$+ check, I think No Millie's. Side note: My boyfriend and I called Mille's a few weeks ago to inquire if we were able to make reservations for brunch (I was pretty sure that they did not, but nonetheless, a girl is gonna do what she wants to do). Instead of politely informing us no, or assist in any way, the person inquired if we even "lived around here" and scoffed when we said that we did--because apparently everyone knows that they do not do reservations for brunch. Our first visit we experienced a wait, the wait was worth the wait. Fresh., I especially enjoyed the uniqueness of their cuisine.

"Best brunch ever" says the boyfriend. *Cue flashback to every single brunch place in memory lane* Is that true? Is it possible that this humbly small restaurant owned by an extremely friendly and oddly cool British bloke who originally ventured into music in LA offers the best brunch ever? The menu is certainly original. Soft scrambled eggs with lobster, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms in a puff pastry served with hollandaise was definitely delicious and an interesting mix of flavors. The Eggs Benitez with pork papusas, poached eggs topped with salsa verde was innovative. The list goes on and quite frankly you can't go wrong here. The owner, Paul, told me himself "Why put things that aren't delicious on the menu". Right, who would want something on the menu that patrons or servers won't recommend?? "Actually honey, you don't want to order that" is just not something a restaurant wants to hear. That's why Millie's strive to put the best on your table. TIPS: -Come early for weekend brunch. We arrived a little bit before 9 am and was able to be seated within the first wave of customers. -Sit at the bar (Paul if you're reading this, we were the customers who met up for a romantic weekend rendez-vous ;-). The two chefs who manned the small kitchen were amazing. Watching them work was like watching a well choreographed dance. AND you get to see the different plates as they come out. -Order different things at your table and share. Obviously if the restaurant boast that all items are worth your time, you want to keep them honest. So is this place as good for me as it was for the boy?! In a Nutshell: Best Food, Worst Service. Let's just start from the beginning shall we. I've never been to Millie's before. I was late to a brunch party celebrating the engagement of one of my best friends and his fiance. I didn't think it was a big deal, it was supposed to be a casual experience... you know BRUNCH. Anyways, they wouldn't take any of the orders for my table until I got there. Why? Because that's just how they do things. So, after showing up 20 minutes late, they finally serve the whole party. The menu is up on a blackboard. I ordered the shrimp and grits. That was the only time I talked to our server until we asked for the check. Food was brought by another server. The food was great. I really enjoyed it and would've loved to go back, but the service staff and (presumably) the owner, ruined it. After asking for the check, the server brought us back the full sum of the table and told us tip was included for a table of our size (no problem). Then she told us we had to do the math ourselves and split up the check at the table. Uh, why? Because that's just how they do things. With a raised eyebrow, my best friend did just that. Our table was becoming visibly upset. To which the wait staff immediately became defensive. An elderly looking man came into the room and stood about 10 feet away watching us the whole time we split the check. Upon realizing that one of the prices was wrong on the ticket compared to black board menu, I pointed it out to the waitress. She copped an attitude and immediately got some chalk and changed the price. She did it right in front of us. It was not a very welcoming experience. Millie's made our dining experience about them when it was supposed to be celebration of an engagement. So, instead of a fond memory of the food and friends, I'm left with a sour taste.
