It has an antique yet modern look and the food is SOO YUMMY! we went for breakfast and had the country breakfast! To me, it seemed like a huge portion however it was cooked to perfection. The country breakfast comes with 2 eggs any style, pancakes, waffles or French toast and bacon, sausage or ham. The pancakes were the fluffiest I've ever had. Short review. Look, Millie's is good. It's a fairly basic breakfast menu, but their omelets are good and their benedicts are good. Is it my go-to for breakfast/brunch? No. But it is top 5 or 6 in Sarasota. I'd say Sun Garden on Siesta Key is first by a LONG shot, then First Watch or Word of Mouth or perhaps Breakfast House, then probably Millie's. Best place for a proper breakfast hands down. We discovered the place through an ad I'd say 20 years ago that boasted about their oatmeal. We figured if they could boast about their oatmeal it had to be some amazing oatmeal. And it was. After our first visit we'd fight over who got to order the oatmeal. Usually I won! :) Well now I gotta tell you that after living in the south for a short period of my life they have much more than just oatmeal. They taught my northern family about sun tea in the early 90's. We fell in love with their biscuits and gravy. The perfect amounts of creamy sauce, pepper and crumbled chunks of sausage. The biscuits are fluffy and yet sturdy enough for the sausage gravy. We can't leave Sarasota without having Millie's biscuits and sausage gravy at least twice. I have discovered cheese blitzes late in life. Millie's are creamy on the inside, thin and light on the outside. We've been going to Millie's with my grandparents for decades. We would stop at Millie's at least once, but usually more than once, during visits here when I was a little girl and as I grew up. I moved to Sarasota recently and, in spite of new ownership, we had some great experiences at Millie's. For example, Georgia is a fantastic server who always seemed to care about our experience and went above and beyond her technical job to ensure that we had a great meal! However, we often could not get to Millie's until between 2:00 and 2:30PM. It became clear that George, the owner, does not want to be there late even though we always order immediately and try to rush out (out of courtesy in spite of being paying customers). Over time, it also became quite clear that the kitchen actually closes at about 2:20-2:25PM. The owner can close whenever he wants to; however, he should not advertise that he is open until 2:30PM. I'm not surprised that another reviewer, Georgann Nugent (on Google), could not reach anyone there at 2:07PM. They don't appear to want your business if it's close to or within the half hour of 2:30PM. I was a server during law school and I took tables right up until we closed. I gave those guests the same experience as everyone else. Additionally, several times, Millie's made my mom sick, so you can imagine my horror when I saw the Herald Tribune's list of worst restaurant inspections from March 18-23 (see text from the Herald Tribune pasted below). Thanks to another reviewer, Paul Krauledis (on Google), for bringing this to my attention. Thank God we stopped going there for so many reasons! Once we stopped being loyal to Millie's, we found so many great breakfast spots who DO want and value our business! There are a ton of breakfast places to enjoy in Sarasota and Venice! I live close to the Hillview area so I seldom venture to Millies but whenever I bring my car to BMW for servicing, I always schedule early in the morning so I can stop at Millies for breakfast. It reminds me of visiting the Amish restaurants in Lancaster, PA when I was little. The restaurant has a feel of a county farm kitchen, spotlessly clean and organized. The service is outstanding, as soon as you walk in the door, someone greets you and brings you to a table. Seconds later you waitress arrives with menus and takes your drink order. The food is the main attraction, they use only the highest quality and it comes out in the taste. Came here for lunch and ordered their chicken panini with potato salad. Not sure why this place has a four star rating. All their paninis come with pesto, bacon, tomato and Swiss cheese, you choose the meat. You would think that with all that was going on, it would have a robust flavor but not by a long shot! The bread was soggy and falling apart, the chicken was still slightly pink and stringy, and worst of all flavorless. The potato salad, which you have a choice of German or American, was more like potatoes Au Gratin with lots of celery and not salt or pepper or anything else.
