I would give three and a half stars if I could. The food is pretty good! Fair price and good food. I've been here twice. The first time I can't remember what I ordered-- but I also got sopapillas. Yum. On the second visit I got steak picado. Very good and generous helping of steak. The service could use a little help though. The first visit was ok, kind of slow, but the manager had explained that our waiter was new. On the second visit service was slow, and not many other people dining. Absolutely my favorite non-chain full Mexican restaurant in the area (there are also some tacquerias that rate very highly, but they aren't full sized like this) . Tortilla soup is WONDERFUL, and I love to hit it up for Margarita Martes. I've had my last 3 birthdays here, and the hostess even bought me a margarita when I graduated college. After several recommendations and checking out the reviews, I found some time to stop by for lunch. At the recommendation of the waitress, I ordered the Tacos al Carbon... and also got to sample the chicken quesadillas and the tamales. The tacos and the quesadillas were delicious. The juicy meats melded perfectly with the other distinct flavors in each dish. The one miss of the meal was that the tamales were rather bland. My friendly and helpful server claimed that the food here leans more on the side of traditional Mexican cuisine than Tex-Mex. Being ignorant of such matters, I'll take her word for it, figuring that either way, La Milpa serves some pretty good food. read more

Sadly going to have to update this one to a 3-star rating. While still a solid place for lunch, the service has taken a turn for the worst. I've been in on 3 different occasions recently where there were long waits for the food, refills, and checks. It doesn't seem to be linked to if its busy or not, seems to just be inattentive servers and/or poor management. I also tried the beef fajitas recently and was very less than impressed. Chewy meat without a lot of flavor. La Milpa hasn't lost me forever, but I won't be going in for a quick lunch or dinner anytime soon. At least they have margarita specials? read more

This place we've been to about 1-2 years ago and the food was so so. Today we went for lunch. The place has been renovated and looks great! The service was attentive and the food was awesome. I highly recommend the chili rellenos. I never have these anywhere except at home with my Latino family. Even my wife was highly impressed with the food. Taco Salad had huge chunks of chicken, crispy shell and best of all, kids eat for 1 dollar on Saturday and Sunday. If you've eaten here within the last 1-2 years come back. It's awesome!! read more

In late April, me and my friends decided to have a get together at La Milpa in Denton. It's one of the fresher Tex-Mex restaurants in the North Texas area. The environment and the staff are very friendly, and the setting is perfect for a Saturday evening. I decided to try their beef & chicken fajitas (like I do all other Tex-Mex places). I went here for my birthday dinner. The drinks here are more than amazing. I'd actually expect to find that quality of drinks in a classier joint, but I'm glad I had them here that night :) Our service was great. Very attentive staff and we even got a free pitcher of shots since it was my birthday. The good was good. I got the skirt steak. Very nicely spiced. I enjoy la milpas, it's a nice sit down atmosphere but not too dressy. I wouldn't say it's an incredibly memorable experience, but they seem to have done a bit of renovating and it looks nicer and more put together than before. The food is good and reasonably priced, if I wanted street tacos though this would not be my first pick. I would say the food is three stars but the effort the business puts into appearance and consistency gives this place a nice touch. It's clean and the margarita list is pretty impressive. This is a cute restaurant with great food and average prices. I ordered the pork tacos with rice and refried beans off of the lunch menu. Prices were typical, around $8-12 per entree. The food was pretty good, and our server brought free churros for our table. read more

Okay so lets start off by saying that this isn't the best Tex-Mex in Denton, but compared to many others it is above and beyond. So the food is quite good, but there are times that the food is sub par. Managed to come back here on there $2 Margarita Tuesday. Thought all margaritas were $2 but it's just the house one - still delicious though! Seated immediately, took 10 min to order drinks. Greeted and served by friendly waitress Karen. I was disappointed that they declined my Campus Page coupon, but our waitress handled it well. Food took 30 min. One thing I've noticed is instead of putting rice and beans and your enchilada or whatnot all on the same plate, they bring out like 3 different dishes for your meal. I understand if they're trying to make their food more appealing, but having a lot of dishes in front of me can be annoying. Regardless, I enjoyed my meal. Based on other reviews I've read recently it seems like La Milpa is trying hard to make a comeback in their food but it is not working out. Just got done eating and we had a terrible visit. The chips tasted stale and our waitress was really nice but must have been overworked because we saw her about 3 times in the hour we spent here. The enchiladas we're terrible, the tortillas were hard and chewy and the chili sauce tasted like it was probably made at lunch and sat on the burner all day. The taco was terrible and stale as well as being flavorless. The beans came out mildly warm and the rice tasted like box store bought nothing fancy. It's been several years since we ate at Milpa's in Denton. Decided to stop by for dinner Monday night. Ordered queso which was barely warm and an entree. Charro beans were luke warm at best. EXTREMELY loud table behind us so much so that we could not hear the waiter who was talking to us to take our order. Stopped in for lunch and ate in the cantina (by the bar) where there was self-serve chips and salsa and a water station. What a great idea! I also love that they serve a lunch menu EVERY day from 11-3. My husband and I got the pick 2 option for $6, all served with rice and beans (tacos, enchiladas, mini chimichangas as some of the options). I tried the chicken chimichanga and chicken enchilada, the former being okay, the latter being excellent. Rice was great! Service at the bar was friendly and laid-back. Music wasn't too loud. This place is very close to where I live, so we decided to give it a shot for lunch today. The food was very tasty, and the quantity is pretty good for the price (especially at lunch). Loved the taco salad! The only hitch: their lunch menu promises a free soup with any eat-in lunch order from 11am to 3pm. We asked our waitress about this and at first she said no, there was no such deal. We pressed and she went back and checked. She disappeared for a while and we were a little concerned, but then she showed up with our soups, and our meals shortly thereafter. So all in all, a pretty positive experience. read more

As far as Tex Mex goes...I've had better, but it's one of the best in town i think. Everything was very flavorful and fresh. Good Salsa and Great rice. Beans: Meh. My wife ordered a Steak Quesadilla, and their steak was really freakin' good. I ordered the diablo Shrimp, they were generous with the shrimp for the price, and it was quite good. side veggies were colorful, fresh and tasty. I liked that I could get grilled veggies instead of the typical beans. Decent Margarita. On Fridays they have a Mariachi band which is super cool. First time I've ever been to this place and was very pleased. To start, the salsa was so fresh and the queso blanco was delicious. I especially liked the jalapeños that were added! We ordered the steak and chicken fajitas and they were very good. A lot of Mexican restaurants do not include cheese, but Milpa does, which was greatly appreciated. Lastly, their drink menu is extensive and very tasty. My first go to was the house margarita, which was very good, but It would be a shame not to try all their other flavors. I am not usually one for flavored margaritas because there is too much of a syrup taste and way too sweet, but Milpa does a great job with their flavors. First visit here was awesome. Service was amazing and the portabella fajitas were rockin'. Second visit was on national margarita day. We expected service to be slow but the cheap margaritas tasted like bad college decisions and the food was mediocre at best. They have all you can eat enchiladas on Tuesdays and first visit we were told you could get veggie enchiladas on special, but next visit we were told you could only get beef, chicken, or cheese enchiladas on special. We also were told we couldn't get tableside guacamole because they were too busy. The non cheap margaritas were hit or miss. The one with agave instead of lime juice was good.
